Said to possess unfathomable, ancient wisdom, the I Ching, also known as “The Book of Changes” or “Yijing” continues to be a much-consulted text in today’s metaphysical and esoteric communities.
Have you ever wondered what people are talking about when they refer to consulting “the I Ching”? Essentially, the book is an age-old divination “manual” that traces all the way back to the Shang Dynasty (1600 BC). These days, if you flip through a modern copy of the I Ching you will find that it is divided into 64 chapters full of a fascinating blend of philosophy, poetry, imagery, and advice.
As an oracle, the I Ching is frequently used by many people all throughout the world for guidance, wisdom and advice from matters ranging from self-help and interpersonal insight, to more practical topics such as making investments and planning business trips.
Basically, the I Ching can be used for every conceivable situation, issue and question in life, utilizing a form of divination known as cleromancy, or gaining universal guidance by rolling or casting random numbers. In the I Ching, three coins (or traditionally yarrow sticks) are thrown six times while a question is held firmly in the mind. The sides of each coin are assigned with either the value 2 or the value 3 and these numbers are added up to form a hexagram, which is a symbol composed of various broken and unbroken lines. Once the coins, or sticks, have been thrown 6 times, and the numbers have been added up to form a hexagram, the I Ching is consulted for the meaning of the hexagram. There are 64 possible hexagrams in total.
