Why Repeated Numbers Can Be Negative Synchronicities on Your Soul’s Path

If you’ve been on the inner path for any amount of time, you’ve likely seen repeated numbers like 11:11, 2:22, 3:33, and more. 

You’re probably aware that they are forms of synchronicity, that is, meaningful coincidences,  which lead to a feeling of being spiritually connected and affirmed by the Universe. 

What’s beautiful about these experiences of seeing repeated numbers and signs is that they help you not to feel so alone on your path. They reveal that you’re part of the cosmic matrix of life, and that you can live in alignment with the flow of your deeper Soul.

Psychiatrist Carl Jung once wrote, “Synchronicity is an ever present reality for those who have eyes to see,” revealing that the more we live in the present moment, the more signs and meaningful coincidences (like repeated numbers) we will find.

But did you know that other than being affirmations from your deeper Self, repeated signs and numbers can also be red flags?

Instead of being affirmations, repeated numbers can be warnings that you’ve gone off your Soul’s path and are wandering into an empty, misaligned, or destructive route.

What is ‘Negative’ Synchronicity?

In her book The Tao of Psychology, psychiatrist and Jungian analyst Jean Shinoda Bolen describes the difference between positive and negative synchronicity, writing,

‘Negative’ synchronicity carries a similar message to reflect on what one is doing. ‘Negative synchronicity’ describes the piling up of coincidental events that block, hinder, and frustrate what one is attempting. Conversely, when a person is following a path with heart, his or her dreams are usually nourishing; they seem interesting and pleasant, often imparting a sense of well-being.

When you experience negative synchronicity, it will come in the form of a challenge, warning, block, or metaphorical ‘red light’ asking you to stop and reconsider. (In this way, it’s a great ally for shadow work.) Positive synchronicity, however, feels more like an affirmation, a moment of joy, or a deep insight.

How Repeated Numbers Reveal You’re Off Your Soul’s Path

Of course, everyone has their own unique associations with numbers and their meanings. Always check in first with your own intuition before accepting others’ interpretations. 

However, it can be helpful to have a list of corresponding “negative” messages associated with repeated numbers for self-reflection and analysis.

Here’s how repeated numbers can reveal that you’re off your Soul’s path:

• Repeated 0’s (00:00, 000) – Time’s up, you’ve got to make a decision. 
• Repeated 1’s (1:11, 111) – You’re disconnected from your inner power.
• Repeated 2’s (2:22, 222) – You’re trapped in dualistic thinking and behavior.
• Repeated 3’s (3:33, 333) – Your growth and creativity may be stuck/stagnating.
• Repeated 4’s (4:44, 444) – You’re lacking a strong foundation; unrootedness.
• Repeated 5’s (5:55, 555) – You’re resisting change or new opportunities.
• Repeated 6’s (6:06, 666) – You need to practice more self-care; life imbalance.
• Repeated 7’s (7:07, 777) – You’re not listening to or trusting your intuition.
• Repeated 8’s (8:08, 888) – You’re stuck in a poverty or “lack” mindset.
• Repeated 9’s (9:09, 999) – You’re avoiding finishing or completing something.
• Repeated 10’s (10:10, 1010) – You’re clinging to an old way of being.
• Repeated 11’s (1111, 11:11) – You’re ignoring your Soul’s voice and spiritual path.
• Repeated 12’s (1212, 12:12) – You’re ignoring a new path in front of you.

Signpost or Setback? How to Recognize the Cosmic ‘No’ on Your Soul’s Path

How do you figure out whether a repeated number or other form of synchronicity is a positive sign or a negative red flag?

I like the acronym CIC – context, intuition, and cognition. 

First, you check in with the context. What is going on in your life? Do you feel as though you’re in the flow? Do you feel stuck or lost? Are you struggling to figure out where things have gone wrong? Your life situation will tell you how to interpret whatever repeated number or sign keeps popping up.

Next is intuition. What does your intuitive gut feeling tell you? Do you feel as though the repeated number is a foghorn trying to blast a new insight into your awareness or a quiet affirmation that you’re on the right path?

Finally comes cognition. It can be easy to fool ourselves and fall into a confirmation bias trap of believing something about ourselves or our lives that simply isn’t true. This is why you need to check in with your left-brain, too. Track how it appears in your daily life. Explore whether you may be using it as an excuse to justify poor decision-making. Don’t be afraid to track, analyze, and scrutinize. These actions all help you to come to an honest understanding.

Sometimes the Detours Are the Path

With all this said, I want to mention that sometimes the detours are the path. Can we ever really be “off” our Soul’s path? Yes and no.

Yes, in the sense that we can be misaligned, lost, and make decisions that aren’t aligned with our core needs and values.

But no, on another level, we can’t be off our Soul’s path because even the moments of confusion, emptiness, and lostness can be opportunities to learn and grow.

So take this as you will and of course, listen to your own heart’s truth.
