Our spirit animals are powerful teachers on our spiritual awakening journeys. They help to guide, inspire, and lead us toward our true purpose while helping us to reconnect with our Souls.
When we come in contact with our spirit animal, we often immediately feel a sense of resonance, reverence, awe, and sometimes fear.
On a deep level, we know that this aspect of Nature is here to reveal lessons and truths that we haven’t yet had the stomach to digest.
However, simply the presence of our spirit animal can often give us the strength to enact changes, make brave decisions, and live our truth.
There are so many ways to learn from these sacred manifestations of Nature.
3 Different Types of Animal Allies

As I elaborate in my spirit animal article, there are three types of animal allies:
- Spirit Animals (guides that call on you)
- Power Animals (guides you call on)
- Totem Animals (guides you inherit)
We’ll only be exploring what your potential spirit animal is in this spirit animal quiz.
Spirit animals are the guides that appear in your life because you need to learn something from them – rather than actively calling on them or inheriting them from a lineage/clan. These are usually the easiest animal allies to connect with.
You can learn more about the other two types by reading the spirit animal article.
Can Our Spirit Animals Change?
Yes, our spirit animals often change throughout the span of a lifetime. We can also have multiple spirit animals.
However, most of us tend to carry one central spirit animal with us throughout our lives that doesn’t change.
In other words, there are both short-term and long-term spirit animals.
While short-term spirit animals help to temporarily guide us through tricky periods of growth, change, and rebirth, long-term spirit animals are there with us through thick and thin.
Many believe that our long-term spirit animals are an aspect of our Soul manifested in animal form.
I believe Wolf, for example, has been by my side since birth as I have always carried a deep resonance with her. As my own essence is very similar to that of a Wolf – and the lessons I’ve learned in this life closely match what Wolf teaches – I consider Wolf to be my long-term spirit animal.
Many other short-term/transitional spirit animal guides have popped up on my path through the years, some including Dove, Spider, Cricket, Moth, Panther, Deer, Raven (and the list goes on).

I’m a little surprised that you have this on here; to my understanding, the term spirit animal belongs to the indigenous communities it originated from. Even the idea that you could take a quiz to find that out is offensive. I personally came up with the term “kindred animal spirit” to refer to mine/cats. I’m just sharing how the community apparently feels. Maybe another term is the solution idk, obviously the concept of a spirit animal isn’t singular.
What community do you speak for? And how does a group own a concept. Yikes.
From my knowledge, many indigenous cultures around the world have had spirit animals (not always called by that name, sometimes thought of as familiars, totems, teachers, guardians, etc.) – from the ancient Celts to indigenous Asian cultures and those in North America, Australia, and so on. Also, we can flip this cultural appropriation claim, and point out how the label actually trivializes indigenous connection to animals.
The National Museum of the American Indian points this out itself:
“The non-Native concept of “spirit animals” has seen a recent rise in popularity, in and out of the classroom. Finding animals they connect with can be a fun activity for many students. However, using the concept of a “spirit animal” while teaching Native American culture trivializes Native relationships to the animal world.”

Aka. Native Americans’ connection to animal spirits is far deeper and more nuanced than the term “spirit animal” can offer, and using this term to describe their cultural connection to animals is, in a sense, more offensive.
What’s more culturally sensitive is to avoid copying things like the use of indigenous clans, totem poles, etc., as pointed out on the same page. This is one reason why I don’t use the term “totem animal.” Hope that helps. :)
Thank you for the information!
I got wolf and it’s correct. Wolfe is my totem animal and spiritual partner on the path. Of course, I receive spirit animals and invoke power animals of many kinds, but the Wolf is the one assigned to me and I am forever grateful.
Wolf is such a beloved guide, one that also directs the work here, as I’m sure you can tell already :) Thanks for sharing!
Horse. And funny enough, im afraid to ride horses. Have been since I was a kid. There must be some additional meaning in that!!
Intriguing — I’d definitely reflect on that more Cathy! 😊
I embrace the owl. This is very fitting at this time in my life. I hear them at night calling out. Sometimes, I will call back to them, and we will have conversations for 30 to 40 minutes. Even though I don’t know what they, nor I, are saying they seem to enjoy the conversations nonetheless. It is quite intriguing to say the least.
One night a very large owl (5 foot span?) decided to get a closer look to see just who she was speaking with. Out of the darkness she swooped in under a low set of branches from a neighboring tree. Without one flap of her wings she flew directly over me, as if to say, I heard you, now I will let you see me. She was so close, we connected our eyes. If I had been standing I could have lifted my hand up to her and touched her wing. It was very beautiful indeed, very spiritual. It was the second experience I have had with an owl in such a close encounter.
Even though I have many experiences with owls, bunnies/hares (hares are here every night and seem to form a semi-circle around me when I meditate, as in protecting me), and many other animals and birds. The Red-tailed hawk is either my power animal or totem animal. I will need to read more on those. They show up when I call on them or when ever I feel threatened. Or whenever they feel I need them. I have so many pictures of them right in my back yard, and I do not live in the country. I live in an established suburban area.
BTW, the newest addition to my hare population that has taken an interest in me I have named Pickles, daughter of Speedy Gonzalez, whose mother, RIP, sat with me for most of the day while I was grieving the loss of a long time friend.
Thank you and Sol so much for your articles. They have helped me through many times. Bless you both and your new expected one on the way.
It sounds and looks like you have a deep connection to nature, Louis. How beautiful that you get to live in a place full of such abundant wildlife. And all the animal allies you have is so special and beautiful. 🦉 Thank you also for your kind words about our work as we grow our little pack.

That can be the case sometimes. Thanks for sharing 😊
I got a bat! 🦇 I actually love bats, and the description is accurate. I am my own obstacle. Dealing with illness in the family while working to create my own family has made me think a lot about death and rebirth lately. Spot on.
Bats are awesome guides 🦇 Thank you for sharing Amanda 💜
Turtle — the representations are perfectly aligned with my past and present.
So happy to hear that Stephen 💜
