Your Calling is Calling: How to Find Purpose in Times of Crisis

Perhaps you’ve been feeling it recently. Maybe you’ve felt it for a long time.

The darkness around us is deep.

We no longer trust the big institutions that were meant to protect us and there is an increase in social unrest at almost every level of society.

Spiritual Wanderer Course:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐ "I started the Spiritual Wanderers Course a short while ago and for the first time in twelve years I have started to experience love, acceptance and compassion for myself and within myself. Thank you so much." – Vivienne S.

Our ecosystem is suffering. Wars between volatile countries are breaking out. Mental health issues are on the rise, so much so that the children these days are labeled “the anxious generation.”

Many of us are struggling to pay for basic necessities. The rise of AI is wiping out many livelihoods and our sense of fundamental security.

Mateo explores more of this crisis in this video:

I don’t need to go into every problem out there because I’m sure you’re more than aware.

We are living in an age of Soul Loss, personally, societally, and globally.

Alchemically speaking, we are living in the phase of nigredo – the darkening, the burning, the dissolution of the old structures in society that we once relied upon.

There is a collective sense of disillusionment and a level of cynicism I’ve never seen before. Do you feel it?

The other day, someone left a comment on one of my posts that perfectly summarizes what I mean. They wrote:

Image of an eclipse

Shadow & Light Membership:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐ "Straight from the very first weekly email, this has been mind-blowingly powerful, the synchronicity and the on-vibe contents resonate uncannily with my soul’s current challenges." – Marie

“There is no such thing as love. Especially agape (“unconditional love”). Humans suck. They don’t want to love. Majority of humans are trash.”

Now I don’t know if this person was a troll or whether they were speaking honestly, but comments like these mirror something tragic but critical:

We are going through an existential crisis as a society – one directly related to a loss of soul, a loss of meaning, and a loss of connection to the spirit of nature (the anima mundi).

When I considered what to write in response to this person, the image of Viktor Frankl, one of the most powerful and awe-inspiring guides on finding purpose in times of despair, immediately came to mind.

Here was my response:

“Hi C. This is a very one-sided and short-sighted perspective. “Majority of humans are trash.” Someone like Viktor Frankl who survived the Nazi death camps chose to turn that horror into a source of power, helping many through his development of logotherapy. The way I see it is that some people in this world choose self-indulgent and self-destructive cynicism which is easy, but also empty and pointless. Others choose to transform that into power, purpose, and potential, making this world better (love in action). At the end of the day, we’re all in this together, whether we like it or not.”

This comment reflects the essence of what I want to share with you today.

In times of crisis, trauma, and darkness, the only path that I know to be truly powerful, healing, and transformative is to turn your pain into a source of power, purpose, and potential.

Anything less than that leaves us feeling overwhelmed, hopeless, angry, and stuck in a pit of self-indulgent cynicism, which doesn’t do us or anyone else much good.

This idea of finding your inner path is not a new one. The notion of having a unique calling can be found in many old religious and spiritual ideas, such as dharma in Eastern thought (one’s sacred duty), vocatio in Christian belief (God-given vocation), or one’s unique “medicine” in shamanic cultures who performed vision quests and other rituals to find their calling.

Where I live in Australia, the Aboriginal people believe in a concept known as Songlines, where their ancestors left pathways across the land for them to follow, connecting them to their greater path, role, and linking them to ancient knowledge.

In times of crisis, a large doorway to the inner world opens. We could say that pain is the portal. Suffering is the initiation. Mythologically speaking, the “call to adventure” and finding a new way of living and being almost always begins with some kind of crisis.

As Viktor Frankl writes, “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” And sociologist Martha Beck complements that by saying, “Any deep crisis is an opportunity to make your life extraordinary.”

In other words, your calling is calling you.

Would you like to save this?

We'll email this article to you, so you can come back to it later!

Your information will never be shared.

In times of crisis, more than ever before, your calling is calling you to step up, listen to the yearning of your soul, and give back to the world your unique form of “medicine.”

This personal medicine can be small and humble. It can be done between jobs, on lunch breaks, or in the early hours of Saturday morning. It can be visible or invisible – it doesn’t have to look any one way.

The simplest way to get started is this:

Put a hand over your heart, close your eyes, get quiet, and turn inwards. Ask your Soul,

“What am I called to do right now?”

Pay attention to the first words, images, or feelings that come up. Trust the first rush of insight.

Also remember this:

Your calling is calling you in many different ways, shapes, and forms. It calls to you through signs, synchronicities, dreams, and longings. It calls to you every day. Listen carefully.

If you struggle to connect with that inner calling or feel blocked in your ability to be proactive, see my Alchemical Soul Work Workbook – a work of passion and the soul – which can help you find clarity and focus.

It’s time to find your path in this time of crisis.

The world needs your unique form of medicine now more than ever. Don’t delay. Now is the time.

Tell me, what came up for you when you asked your heart and Soul, “What am I called to do right now?”? I’d love to hear in the comments below.

I always feel great comfort and hope reading your articles. I appreciate the work you put in.

When I put my hand on my heart and ask what I’m called to do, I get the same response every time I ask myself that question. The answer is always “create a sanctuary,” “be a sanctuary,” or simply “sanctuary.”

I live in Canada and during the pandemic and after we were overrun by misinformation that led people down some unhealthy paths and divided the country. The country has united in national pride after the multiple economic attacks from the government south of the border. However, the tensions the world has faced on the political scene and the constant barrage of negativity really takes its toll. For me, I want to help people feel strong within themselves. I want to provide space where a person can take a breath and re-set. I have big dreams and bigger fears. My dark night of the soul has me in a grips. So, “sanctuary” feels right and important to me.

From 2021 til 2023 i lived in a blackness deeper than any ive known, when i began to surface,i remebered what my father came back to tell me in 2018 on the anniversary of his death,i was to become a witch and blacksmith. I reached and clungcto that and in that process found my purpose in the continuance of the memory of Eckley and Sophia Coxe, coal barons in anthracite coal mining from the late 1800s,my volunteer work for this foundation has truly given me a purpise in life again, ive been wirh them 2 years now and i still get the giddy feeling of my first time there every time i set foot on that property. I have been blessed.

Thank you for sharing this powerful calling, Tony. I love the ‘giddy’ feeling you describe because it reminds me of the feeling of falling in love, but falling in love with your calling. :)

I try to be nice, helpful and compassionate and always choose to do the right thing. Doesn’t always work, but trying keeps you focussed on the good there is everywhere in between the darkness. Stay close to the basic things and live a simple live, like our ancestors did. In my religion there are plenty examples of persons who lived like this….and I look back to them and try the best to follow their ways. It brings alot of happiness, just by doing the best you can….I dont have any influence on most of the horrible things that are happening so I try to stay close to myself and help where I can to help make the world a little bit better.

The first thing that came up was “heal”. That’s all. Since nothing was specified, I take it that everything was meant.

Heal myself. Heal others. Heal the planet. Heal everything that needs healing. No pressure (grins). In reality, be more open to see what needs to be healed and do so if I can.

My simple yet powerful practice is to try to do one thing every day out of the love without expecting anything in return.
One who continually gives will naturally find they continually have…

I’ve been struggling with health issues. The author of a book I read said that I should be eating what my ancestors (Ukrainians) ate. Nourishing my DNA. Not eating what’s trending, Mexican food, in my case.

I’ve also been struggling with my spiritual path. I’m hurt and angry and I feel deeply betrayed.

So I thought I should apply the same logic. I should be Spiritually nourishing my DNA, looking at ancient Eastern European- Slavic Spiritual wisdom, not the highly popular Asian or Middle Eastern wisdoms.

Y’all have a lot of offerings. I’ve already learned a lot and collected a bunch. But now I need to learn a different discipline.

Ah yes, when we are hurt and in fresh pain, it is easy to see the whole human race as trash. Haven’t we all been there? After a break up, all men/woman are xyz…? Last year when I was hit by a teenager walking by, I felt the same way.
Anyhow, For me it feels kind of arrogant to say, that I am not a victim for the current chaos and anxiety. (Ofcourse I have my internal mainly health related battles) I am aware (partially) of what’s going on, on the planet. I understand its necessary. We want a different way of life, and for that the old needs to make room for the new. Following some spiritual teachers has been really helpfull for me to understand what is going on and receive some form of comfort at the same time. I heard, I think it was Pam Gregory who said it’s one big collective dark night of the soul. That resonated with me, since it’s not that long ago I had my own dark night of the soul where every believe, structure and knowledge I thought i knew as truths were questioned and things/believes/pets/family were removed from my life in Rollercoaster speed.
Years ago, at the beginning of the Russian/Ukrainian conflict I decided to stop pay attention to the news. I simply couldn’t handle it, I felt as if I was drowning on the daily. Honestly convinced that WW3 would enter, i was already thinking about where to go if I had to flee my country, cause I was most surely not participating in the madness. Not paying close attention to news, saved my sanity. I dont think i would be in this mental space today, if i kept consuming the heaviness that’s being spread. From everything I learned from the spiritual teachers I am following and spiritual related podcast I am watching. The best thing you can do is to consciously choose the positive approach. Darryl Anka said it today in the next level soul podcast. Not to close your eyes for the bad, you can acknowledge the bad without drowning in it. And be the ripple as Kerry would say. For me that means doing the inner work. Recover my inner children from the old wounds, change inherited ancestral patterns. And do the best i can with the means available. You can be part of the ripple even with small steps.

“Not to close your eyes for the bad, you can acknowledge the bad without drowning in it.” — essential for these times.
“You can be part of the ripple even with small steps.” — yes, this is essential.
      Thanks for sharing, Evelien. 💜

Hello and thank you for your inspirational messages. I am on a spiritual journey and Thich Naht Hahn’s books say I have achieved enlightenment and am now working to deepen my understanding and practices. I meditate each day and practice mindfulness. I send unconditional loving kindness and Peace out into the universe each morning. I am a practicing Buddhist as well as a Druid and add in my Native American Heritage of walking the medicine wheel. I am 74 and died and was resuscitated from a heart attack 3 years ago. I live in the high desert of northern New Mexico much as a solitary introvert. Modern society drains me and I avoid societies ‘normal people’ as much as possible. There are true people in our midst but you must search them out for we are far too few.
But I would like to thank you for your words of wisdom though I do realize you are in a business. I have been looking at your differing offerings and am thinking of supporting you though I am on a fixed income. I am just not sure which one. Perhaps I will look deeper. Your message in this email speaks deeply to me. I understand the despair of the person you responded to. I feel humanity is in its final decline, soon to make ourselves extinct as we have so many other species. If we do not cease to exist completely I feel we shall be greatly diminished and the sci-fi stories of an apocalyptic existence shall be the reality for those who survive.
I know my calling and it is teaching those who will hear and to lead by example. You cannot force anyone to learn sadly. So I send you Peace and thank you once more for your inspirations.

I wonder what you mean by achieving enlightenment? That might be something to look at more closely, as enlightenment is a gift of grace rather than something earned.
But aside from that, thank you Don for sharing your thoughts and intention to support our work. I’m not sure what the future of humanity will look like, but I’m hoping for the best while expecting the worst.
      Sending love 💜
