6 Examples of Psychological Projection We All Commit

I tend to make assumptions a lot, about everything and everyone.

While I have mostly learned the hard way that most people donโ€™t actually think, feel and reason the same way I do, I realized long ago that the tendency to make assumptions is a form of naivety that we are all born with to some extent.

Unfortunately, making assumptions โ€“ which is closely linked to something known as psychological projection โ€“ is not only something that we all do, but it is common for us to suffer greatly at the expense of such a habit.

โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ "I started the Spiritual Wanderers Course a short while ago and for the first time in twelve years I have started to experience love, acceptance and compassion for myself and within myself. Thank you so much." โ€“ Vivienne S.

If you are a chronic projector you will experience a great deal of anxiety around other people, as well as other unpleasant emotions like anger, disappointment, resentment and prejudice on a daily basis.

Keep reading to discover whether youโ€™re a โ€œserial projectorโ€ or not in your daily life.

What is Psychological Projection (In Laymanโ€™s Terms)?

Image of a woman holding up a mirror doing mirror work

What happens when you have a whole bunch of uncomfortable, embarrassing and annoying emotions that you donโ€™t want to unconsciously deal with?

According to famous psychologist Sigmund Freud these emotions are projected onto other people, so that other people become carriers of our own perceived flaws.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) for us, this form of emotional displacement makes it much easier to live with ourselves โ€ฆ because everyone else is responsible for our misery โ€“ not us!

As a result of externalizing our emotions and perceiving them in others, we continue suffering terribly, often creating false self-images that portray us as โ€œthe victimโ€ or โ€œthe good/righteous personโ€ whenย the reality is that we aren’t.

Common Examples of Psychological Projection

The trick to seeing through the guise of projection is to become aware of the sneaky habitual cycles we get into on a daily basis. Some of the most common examples of psychological projection that we all commit are expanded on below:

Shadow & Light Membership:

โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ "Shadow and Lightโ€™s weekly guidance always rings true to my heart. Thanks for acknowledging my shadows and inviting my inner light. I always get excited to open the Shadow and Light emails on Sunday!" โ€“ Angela M.

1. โ€œHe/she hates me!โ€

Whether at home, at work or in any other situation, we have all believed that our bosses, co-workers, mother in-laws, extended family members and other people weโ€™ve come in contact with โ€œhateโ€ or โ€œdislikeโ€ us for no reason. While we are convinced that the words, intonations and brief looks given to us are reflections of hidden hatred, most of us fail to realize that believing someone โ€œhates usโ€ is often a result of projection. If we have a strong dislike for someone in the first place it is common for us to protect ourselves against this feeling by projecting it into another.

2. โ€œOh my god, sheโ€™s so fat/ugly/slutty!โ€

How often have you bitched about another woman (or man) whose physical appearance was somehow displeasing to you? You might have felt an immense sense of distaste and dislike for this person, when in fact this chagrin is a protection mechanism veiling your own deeper body-image issues. Likely, you are deeply insecure about your own body, and thus unconsciously project this loathing onto others.

3. โ€œOther people make me uncomfortable.โ€

Often the anxiety and tension we feel around others is a reflection of the way we perceive ourselves. When we are insecure or have low self-esteem, it is common to perceive the problem as being with other people and not ourselves. This classic form of projection is common amongst those suffering from social anxiety.

4. โ€œIf I can do it, other people can as well.โ€

This is perhaps one of the most nauseating types of projection others make โ€“ which, while flattering and motivating in some ways, is completely unrealistic in others. How often have you heard commercials or advertisements with happy shiny people proclaiming, โ€œI lost 30 kilos in 3 weeks โ€“ you can too!โ€ or, โ€œI earned $1,245 dollars overnight โ€“ you can too!โ€ This is a common example of projection that fails to take into account the fact that everyone has a different level of capability. It is also common for us to personally commit this kind of psychological projection as well. For example, with our children we might think, โ€œIf I was a good athlete, she will be as wellโ€ or with our co-workers we might think, โ€œIf I could organize that project, he can as well.โ€ Often this form of projection creates a lot of frustration and disappointment.

5. โ€œThat is gross/bad, get it away from me.โ€

What we react the most strongly to says the most about what we place the most importance in. For instance, if we canโ€™t stand watching sex on TV this could very well be a reflection of a hidden sexual shame or insecurity we have in ourselves. Homophobia as well is also often a type of projection, especially amongst religious people (for instance, did you know the highest amount of gay porn is consumed by โ€œBible Beltโ€ states in the US?).

6. โ€œHe/she is having an affair.โ€

The fear that your partner/spouse is having an affair or is untrustworthy is often a reflection of the way you feel about yourself. All normal people functioning in relationships feel attracted to other peopleย at one point or another, and sometimes this self-discovery is met with fear and shame which is thenย oftenย projected onto the other partner.

***

Remember that these six examples only reflect what sometimes happens, not what always happens. For example, your partner may indeed be cheating on you, in which case something must be done about that. However, psychological projection shouldnโ€™t be ruled out either.

We all project in our daily lives to protect ourselves against emotions, thoughts and perceptions that we judge as being too โ€œbad,โ€ โ€œugly,โ€ โ€œshamefulโ€ or “uncontrollable.”

Often these disowned aspects of ourselves form our shadow self and can only be reintegrated through shadow work. This is why itโ€™s important to identify and become aware of what types of projection impact us the most.

I donโ€™t like seeing poor people
begging for change outside the shop, I tend to give them dirty looks, I also donโ€™t like seeing people who look like they come from poor areas. It has nothing to do with them, I know itโ€™s a shadow projection because I grew up poor in one of those areas and everytime I see someone like that, it takes me straight back to my childhood.. itโ€™s so bad that everytime I see someone like that, I feel that I have to come home and take a hot shower., I know itโ€™s not on them, itโ€™s purely a projection

Look, if you’re angry at being told about projection, then perhaps you should examine why you feel offended about this. A person who is confident and secure that they are right won’t react to such feedback by saying such a concept doesn’t exist at all. They’d say it doesn’t apply to them specifically without anger, but they won’t start to get obsessed with arguing that bullying and abuse due to psychological projection doesn’t exist, which is a nonsense idea, hahaha. If that was true, it would be a far more peaceful, loving, and happy world, and that’s not the case. If it doesn’t apply specifically to your situation, then just don’t mind this and move on to looking for advice that does apply to your situation. But you can’t tell people to take something down just because their problems and situations are not the same as yours. Are you going to tell people to stop funding charities for the homeless and the hungry, just because you’re not homeless and hungry yourself? Come onnnn. Have the ability to see you’re not the center of the world, and not every article made on self-help websites have to apply to your current situation all the time, and just understand that others have different situations where this advice would apply sometimes. It’s not a one size fits all thing. Different ideas apply to different people, but that doesn’t mean you should immediately rally to remove all the ideas that cannot act as a one size fits all solution to everyone. Just use what applies to you, let go of what doesn’t, and stop policing people to only concentrate on problems related to your own life.

Autistic don’t perceive, think or reason this way. Though may openly share instructions on enlightenment discovered, part of what makes this difference is sense-percieveing things as ‘too real’ and being marginalised / left to observe from the sidelines due to a entirely different internal structure for communication.
First work out your neurotype THEN ask if this is a mode of being human.

There is no research saying that those with neurodiversity conditions such as autism, ADHD, or dyslexia are incapable of projecting emotionally towards other people. I think you have what is called “aspie supremacy,” which is the ideology saying that those with Asperger’s syndrome are morally and intellectually superior to other members of the human race, which is not true. I’m not saying that neurodiverse groups are inferior, just equal instead. Google the term “aspie supremacy,” yourself or the forum /r/fakedisordercringe online to explore more about the issue. There are good and bad people in neurodiverse and neurotypical spaces. It is about the difference in thinking, not about how morally superior someone is over the other. Anyway, it seems a bit too much of a eugenics ideology to believe some people are born inherently more moral because of neurotype, and I suggest you do not spread such an ideology to the population. If you look up the “Asperger nazi controversy,” you’ll read history on how Asperger, the man who originally created the term, came from Nazi ideology himself, and while nothing is inherently morally wrong about autism, nothing is inherently morally superior about it either. Stop saying things like you’re a morally perfect human being if you’re born a certain way with certain genes over others. You know how that sounds like if I put it that way, don’t you?

Dee, I feel you do not understand the meaning of projection. Yes, saying it ‘like it is’ is perhaps being truthful, at least to yourself, just because you think something doesn’t make it the truth, especially when you misunderstand the concepts of truth, projection, therapy, and deep seated inner conflicts (which some have no idea how to handle, other than to lash out, which was sort of the point about the discussion of defence mechanisms. I note this chat thread is a fine example of many defence mechanisms at play. If you want to be honest, first be honest to yourself, maybe give that a go. Good luck.

It wasn’t implied. It was explicitly and clearly stated. No projection there. And if you did your own research, you would know that that statement is founded on statistical data. Why are you so defensive?
