6 Samhain Rituals and Dark Spirit Guides (for Halloween)

What are the true origins of Halloween?

Halloween was said to have originated among the ancient Celtic people who referred to it as โ€œSamhain.โ€ To the Celts, Samhain represented the end of the agricultural cycle, the beginning of the winter months, and the day on which souls that had died the previous year traveled to the other side. The new year was then celebrated on November 1st which the Church of England later โ€œChristianizedโ€ as โ€œAll Saints Dayโ€ (to honor religious saints and martyrs). The Church also renamed Samhain to โ€œAll Hallows Eve,โ€ which eventually came to be called โ€œHalloween.โ€

Unfortunately, due to early Christian influence, Samhain came to be perceived as an โ€œevil pagan celebrationโ€ with many Celtic deities (such as the horned god Cernunnos) coming to be associated with the Christian hell. And finally, after traditional Samhain rituals evolved into a somber Christian holiday, Halloween has now become a highly commercialized celebration.

Spiritual Wanderer Course:

โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ "I started the Spiritual Wanderers Course a short while ago and for the first time in twelve years I have started to experience love, acceptance and compassion for myself and within myself. Thank you so much." โ€“ Vivienne S.

Now, this is not to say that I donโ€™t love the tempting candy, vibrant costumes and spooky playfulness of the day. I actually love Halloween (itโ€™s my favorite holiday), but I also know that it can be so much more meaningful. Having Celtic blood running deep through my veins and all the way through my ancestry tree, I honor Samhain as a time of the year to stop, ground myself, and reflect. I hope it can be for you as well.

Samhain: A Portal into the โ€œUnderworldโ€ of Your Psyche

Carving pumpkins (originally potatoes and turnips), dressing up in costumes, and making delicious food on Halloween all has its origins in Samhain. It was said that the wearing of costumes in the ancient times was originally done to honor the dead that were allowed to rise from the Underworld to be sent to their new incarnations, and also to protect oneself against any malevolent spirits that were to appear. On Samhain it was also said that the veil between this world and the land of the dead was at its thinnest, so any communication between this world and the next was encouraged.

But Samhain also has a deeper spiritual meaning. In modern times, Samhain has taken on a more personal tone in which many people set it aside as a time of year to let old attachments, stories and beliefs die, paving a way for the new. Like the caterpillar that dissolves and โ€œdiesโ€ in its cocoon, Samhain is a time to welcome the dissolution of illusions and paths that have no heart. While this may be scary and unknown territory, it is nevertheless part of the cycle of life that the ancient Celts observed, and that we can witness today.

As a portal into the Underworld of your Psyche, Samhain is also a time to burrow deep into the caverns of your unconscious mind and your Shadow Self. In fact, Halloween is as much a psychological exploration of the dark and unknown realms of life, as it is a fun spooky celebration. At this time you may like to call on the help of new or past Spirit Guides to support and enlighten you to โ€œhiddenโ€ areas of your life which must be focused on.

Common Spirit Guides linked to Samhain include:

  • The Morrigan
  • Hecate
  • Pan
  • Persephone
  • Spider
  • Raven

If you would like the assistance of any one of these Spirit Guides I recommend first being in a calm, open, inviting place. If you are in a closed place of fear you will not benefit from the messages any Spirit Guide has to give you, ever. Below weโ€™ll explore 6 Samhain rituals, including how to contact one of these Spirit Guides.

6 Spiritual Samhain Rituals

Halloween Samhain Rituals image
Samhain is the perfect time of year to “clean out the skeletons” from your closet.

Samhain is observed from the sunset of October 31st to the sunset of November 1st โ€“ however, you donโ€™t need to reserve these rituals for Samhain exclusively. If you live in the Southern Hemisphere like me, Winter actually starts on June 1st. Also, if you are at a point in life where you feel that itโ€™s necessary to explore the โ€œdark and unknownโ€ of who you are, or cut away old ties and burdens, these rituals can be practiced at any time.

Shadow & Light Membership:

โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ "Receiving these messages is a beacon of light and hope for me in currently very challenging times. The words of wisdom speak right to my soul, guiding and encouraging me further on my path. I highly recommend Shadow & Light to everyone who seeks to develop and cultivate a relationship with the Inner Self." โ€“ Karin

Remember that these Samhain rituals are exclusively about you. Also, these rituals can be practiced by religious and non-religious people alike. They are non-faith based.

1. Power Stone Meditation

Certain rocks and gems such as black onyx, amethyst, obsidian, bloodstone and opal are linked with Samhain. In a quiet place, allow yourself to sit (or lie down) and relax. Hold your power stone of choice in your right hand and allow your mind to become quiet. Rotate the stone around in your hand if you wish and allow it to become a conduit of the unconscious mind. Breathe deeply and allow whatever images, thoughts, sounds or sensations emerge slowly. Acknowledge them, but allow them to pass away. This will help to release them from your mind.

2. Summon Your Spirit Guide

When you are in a confident, open and trusting place, set aside time to summon your Spirit Guide or Spirit Animal. In my experience, I recommend that you allow your Spirit Guide to reach out to you rather than you reaching out to it. This is because who or what we think our Spirit Guide is, is often not the most ideal fit for us. Our Soul knows best.

To summon your Spirit Guide by yourself I recommend that you either, (1) do closed-eye meditation, (2) use a mirror, or (3) pay attention to your dreams โ€“ but this is a slower way. You can also get a spirit animal reading in our shop if you need assistance.

Do a closed-eye meditation like any other meditation. Sit or lie down, relax your body, and allow your mind to be emptied of thoughts. Ensure that you close your eyes โ€“ or even better do this at night in a pitch black room โ€“ and hold one single intention in mind: to meet your Spirit Guide. Make sure that you stay on track with your intention, constantly holding it in mind. This could take anywhere between 10 minutes to 1 hour, so be patient. Allow images to roll across the darkness and stay alert. Look for patterns, but also keep your mind open.

Using a mirror is the next interesting technique. Position yourself in front of a mirror (perhaps in your bathroom or bedroom) in private. Get comfortable because you will be sitting/standing there for a while! Once you are ready allow your eyes to relax into the mirror. I like to focus on my own eyes, and I recommend that you start that way as well. After a few minutes of non-stop gazing, you will find that the edges of your vision get blurry and start to transform. Continue staring at one point (your eyes) as your entire face begins to morph through time. This could take anywhere between 5 minutes to 15. You may find that your face begins to morph into an animalโ€™s face, or the face of another being. Keep your intention in mind and see what happens.

Finally, dreams are a slower process, but they are also very accurate. It may take you a single nightโ€™s sleep or an entire month to discover your Spirit Guide. Always keep your intention (of meeting your Guide) in mind before falling asleep. When waking up it helps to immediately reflect on what you dreamed, and any unusual symbolism. Meetings with our Spirit Guides on the unconscious plane are often extremely vivid and โ€œlife-like.โ€ They set themselves apart.

3. Herb Smudging Ceremony

Sage, mugwort, bay leaf, and lavender are all herbs that are linked with Samhain. You may like to pick some of these herbs from the garden, tie them with yarn, and create a smudge stick which can be burned to โ€œbanishโ€ old energy from your house and life. If you would prefer not to smudge, you may like to burn a simple candle instead and walk around your house with the same intention.

4. Black Candle, White Candle

This simple ritual requires two candles; one black and one white. The black candle represents your life, decisions and experiences in the past year. First, light your black candle and reflect on all that was. Think about how your experiences have helped you to become the person you are today, what lessons you could have learned (if any), and what ways you have grown. When you are done, blow out the black candleโ€™s flame with gratitude, bidding farewell to what was. Next, light your white candle. This candle represents the present moment and year to come. Reflect on ways you can experience more joy and wholeness each day. When youโ€™re ready, blow out the flame with hope.

5. Shadow Self Visualization

This visualization requires you to be in a calm, open, accepting frame of mind. Our shadow selves are the forgotten, shunned, repressed parts of ourselves that we hide away from the light of the world. (You can read more about the shadow self.) I recommend that you only do this visualization if you are ready to make peace with the darkness within you. Please donโ€™t force anything.

Would you like to save this?

We'll email this article to you, so you can come back to it later!

Your information will never be shared.

When you are ready, sit in a silent space and relax. Allow your mind to empty and focus on your breathing. When you are ready, visualize a doorway, this doorway will lead you back to your grounded self. With each breath allow yourself to travel through the doorway, deeper and deeper into your mind. As you travel deeper and deeper into your mind, call softly to your Shadow. Be gentle and encouraging. You may like to say for instance, โ€œShadow, Iโ€™m here to meet you, Iโ€™m here to accept you, come out and reveal yourself.โ€ Eventually, you will sense your Shadow and possibly even see it. What does he/she/it look like? Is your Shadow shy, threatened, lonely, or maybe even hostile? Perhaps it is large, small, fat, skinny, or not even human? Ensure that you remain open and loving: this is a neglected part of yourself after all. When your Shadow is comfortable enough with you, invite it into an embrace. Send it unconditional love. When you are done, look up. See the doorway glowing in the distant. Grab the rope that is dangling right in front of you and say goodbye. Climb up the rope towards the doorway and step through. Your visualization is complete.

6. Tie Up Loose Ends โ€“ Draw a Mandala

Alternatively, you can download one here for free. Mandalas are immensely healing forms of art as they help us to express ourselves, and encourage emotional balance. Carl Jung, the famous psychotherapist, utilized mandalas in his own personal healing and would encourage his patients to draw them. Mandalas are so powerful because they reflect perfect balance, and the circle itself represents wholeness. So try your hand at drawing your own Mandala and witness the benefits!

Thank you so much for this guidance! I’ve always been wanting to be able to see my spirit guide. But it always had me confused, sometimes terrified, and sometimes even baffled. I am not sure why this happens.

I tried the closed eyes meditation to look for my spirit guidance many a times, however, it’s been rather confusing for me.

I start seeing things, but there’s one common thing that always happens: I end up in one of my childhood rooms. Sometimes the lights are on, sometimes off, and sometimes it’s just the sunlight that lightens the room. Another thing is that each time I’m super close to being able to find my guide, but then, just something happens. I sometimes suppose it happens because I get distracted by the sound of any other birds around. I just always want to go out and see which one is making the sound. Other times, I open my eyes myself because I end seeing something..rather disturbing. I’m not sure what it is, since it’s all just a dark figure. It’s a shadowed humanoid figure, staring at me. It occurs in a lightened room. While when I am in a dark room, I get distracted. It’s almost like my guide doesn’t want me to see it. I’m not sure what to do other than that. I’ve tried looking for signs in my dreams, and it always has something to do with the Moon. The most common is darkness itself. Please help me.

Oh, and, another thing. Once, I had seen a creature in the dark. It seemed like a snake from the movement, but for a moment, it felt like it had many glowing eyes.

    Happy Halloween โค๏ธ

I’m Indian, yet I feel an inexplicable connection to this Celtic Festival. It’s like this long lost thread that I want to trace and feel a belonging to the rituals and beliefs associated with Samhain.

I’ve come to your website for a very long time for spiritual guidance. Almost 10 years now..

Thank you for lighting my path with your profound words.

    Hello Mateo and Aletheia,

I have been reading your site for about a year and I would like to say it is very serious work that you are doing here. I donโ€™t know if it was an awakening of mine that happened a year ago but I am very glad that I found your site.

Some time in the past couple of months, I have red this article and I would like to share my experience because I think it is an interesting one.

In this article you mention that โ€œif you are at a point in life where you feel that itโ€™s necessary to explore the โ€œdark and unknownโ€ of who you are, or cut away old ties and burdens, these rituals can be practiced at any timeโ€. I think that for me both of the above things, apply. So, from the 6 rituals, I tried the Power Stone Meditation. I thought it was more comfortable for me since I havenโ€™t performed rituals in general.

So, I was lying down in my bed in the evening, the room wasnโ€™t completely dark, I had a light on but it was in another room so the light that was coming to me wasnโ€™t much and the stone I used was an amethyst.

I started the meditation, I was calming down, focusing on my breath, holding the amethyst in my right hand, I hadnโ€™t seen any images yet, I was at the first 5 or 10 minutes, but all of a sudden a spontaneous voice came out of me (not with spoken words but in my mind as a thought) , and I said โ€œI would like an answer. All the years, I ask questions and questions and questions but I donโ€™t find an answer. So, I would like an answer, any answerโ€. After a little time some images came into my mind, I acknowledged them and after a while I finished the meditation and continued the things that I do normally in my every day life.

After a couple of days, it was Saturday morning, I wanted to setup my new printer in my laptop. Also I would like to say here that the files that I have from buying from your shop, I donโ€™t have them in my laptop, I keep them in a separate drive for safety and I havenโ€™t printed any of them because I study them on the laptop.

So, that morning I power up my laptop and after that I power up the printer. All of a sudden and without me doing anything, the printer starts printing a page. It was a specific page from the Shadow Work Journal, an exercise that I havenโ€™t done yet. It was the โ€œExercise 17 โ€“ Shadow Letter, Give your shadow self a voiceโ€. I was shocked. I couldnโ€™t explain how it happened. As I mentioned the files were in a separate drive and I didnโ€™t have anything that wasnโ€™t printed. Immediately I remembered the meditation that I made a couple days earlier. So, I started preparations, took some candles, something to hold the candle and I performed the exercise. I would like to mention here that the candle I used was lavender.

I had my eyes closed and I started seeing things, different things, I was holding a pen and with closed eyes I was writing the scenes in a piece of paper. Fortunately I didnโ€™t overlap what I was writing and was able to write clearly the sentences after I finished the exercise.

Indeed what I saw, was cryptic and I havenโ€™t interpreted it yet. I donโ€™t know what it means, I don’t know if it is an answer or what answer is but I hope some day I will find out. It was an interesting experience for me and I am really happy about it.

Also I would like to add here something that I donโ€™t know if there is any connection with the above story, that is I have performed the guided meditation that you include in the โ€œTwin Flames Bundleโ€, the one about โ€œShadow Self Visualizationโ€ and I have seen the form of my shadow self, I had some kind of conversation with it, told me its name and generally I was stunned because I didnโ€™t know what to ask further. But I am very happy for this experience also.

Thank you very much for all the help you are giving from this site.
    George

Also I wanted to say that I have always loved the spider’s webs and respected spiders. It was passed down from my grandmother never to kill a spider. I have always been fascinated by their beautiful webs.

Then there was the old tale of William Wallace (Braveheart, as he is known), who was in a cave waiting for the safe time to get out, and he watched a spider patiently weaving her web in the cave. He was so inspired by the spider’s patience and by what the spider achieved, that he went on to fight for reform and freedom and became a hero of the highest order.

Thanks, Aletheia for your wonderful post on Halloween. I have a Celtic background, my grandmother spoke Gaelic first and English second . She sometimes mixed Gaelic and English in one sentence. Some words like wee (little) and when people say Ta (for thanks) those come from the Gaelic, and are used in English.

Your history on Halloween is perfect, and it is so good to see it so well written, and so accurately described. It was a pleasure to read your post, Aletheia.

I once heard that if you want to have a glimpse of yourself in a previous life, then look in a mirror in a darkened room, and hold a white candle up to the right side of your face; and you may catch a glimpse of yourself in a former life. Have you ever heard of that one?

Best to you on Samhain ….All Hallows Eve!

I have some questions about summoning. I recently came across a sigil I didn’t know and liked it – turns out it was one of those Solomon Keys and I was about to draw it myself. I am really uneducated on the matter but in my little research I found it had great chances to end badly. I get the main idea but my question is: sigil crafting has all its “dangers” because it is low magick or not all sigils share this low magick nature and I can still do mine if I want? Thank you for you attention :)

Hi Debora. I am not a practitioner of magick, however in my experience I’ve learned never to do anything I am not comfortable or confident with. You must have faith and inner assurance to approach things like this. I hope that helps. ;)

I’m starting to think that one of my spirit guides is a Spider.

Whilst I do still have a slight fear of spiders, I’ve never hated them. Having grown up living on the back of a national forest I’ve become accustomed to seeing all different kinds of them over the years so I don’t flip out like many other people do when I see one. I’m against killing them too. if I see one indoors I will try and capture it in a container of some kind and move it outside. I’ve also found I get rather upset when I’ve seen other people kill them.

Over the last couple of months I’ve started seeing Spiders in my dreams quite often. They’ve all either been friendly or at least have appeared in a non threatening manner. I did look into what the spider represents – creativity, cycles, feminine energy and forging ones own life path, and after looking at where my life is right now, I do feel like I need to work on each of these aspects.

I’m definitely going to have a go at these exercises and see if I can establish a stronger connection with it.

Hi Dan, do that, and let me know how you go! Spider to me represents all of these elements you suggest, and also the more subtle gifts of life such as intuition. Spiders are blind, and they receive all of their sensory input through vibrations. So I would look into this further. Good luck!

Spiders have eight eyes and are not blind. Bats, however, are as you described, blind and input sensory through vibrations from insects to feed.
