“Money is evil and it should never come into the domain of spiritual practice!”
“You’re not a REAL spiritual person if you charge money for your spiritual services!”
“You should never want more money if you’re a spiritual person – show gratitude for what you’ve got!”
Spiritual Wanderer Course:
Being a lone wolf and a spiritual wanderer is a sacred calling in life – a unique and alchemical path of awakening. You don’t need to feel lost, alone, or stuck on your journey any more. It’s time to meet your soul’s deep needs for clarity, self-acceptance, and empowerment. Let us show you how …
“Everything that you do should be given to others for free – THAT is the only loving way of doing things.”
“Stop being a peddler!”
Through the years, I’ve heard a lot of passionate – and frankly dogmatic – opinions regarding spirituality and money.
These opinions range from extreme views such as money always taints and corrupts spirituality and spiritual services should never have a price tag, all the way to polar views that we should invest as much money as we have in spiritual practice.
Let me be clear: I’m not a person of extremes. I seek and respect balance, so my perspective falls somewhere in the middle.
I don’t believe charging for spiritual services is wrong nor do I believe that you should invest all the money you have in spiritual materials, courses, and teachers. I’ll explain why below.
But before we proceed I want to be clear: money and spirituality can be a heated topic. I respect everyone’s right to have different opinions so long as they don’t shove them into the faces of others.

Ironically so much unkindness and “unspiritual” behavior can occur when discussing money and spirituality. Let’s keep the comment area civil and mature.
Is Money Evil?
Let’s start off with a super basic question. Is money evil? After all, many of us have been conditioned to believe the religious idea that “money is the root of all evil.”
My simple answer to this question is no, money is not evil.
Why?
Money is paper – literally, it’s paper that WE have given value and meaning. By itself, it means nothing.
Saying money is evil is like saying the spoon you used to gouge that guy’s eyes out is evil. No, the spoon itself is not evil – it was your behavior that was the issue.
Do you see what I mean?
Money is a symbolic item we use to give and exchange items. In and of itself it is not evil – the problems stem from our minds and hearts, not from the flimsy piece of paper that we hold in our hands.
Why it Makes Sense to Be Suspicious of Money and Spirituality
I understand the fear surrounding money because, sometimes, I experience it as well. It sounds something like this:
Is that person really genuine?
Would you like to save this?
Your information will never be shared.
Is that spiritual message a slick marketing campaign or does it carry genuine truth?
Can I rely on that person if they are charging me money?
Does that person care about me or my money?
Are they going to try and scam me?
What motivates that person – greed or love?
And all these concerns are legitimate.
The reality is that yes, there are sharks out there swimming in the water wanting to make a quick buck. There are deceitful and sly people out there who market themselves as spiritual “gurus” and teachers. There are people who dress up as beings of light but are fuelled by dark motives. There are people who will use you for your money – and discard of you when you no longer pay their bills.
It’s not only sensible to feel this way but it is also crucial. Without a little bit of healthy skepticism, we approach the arena of spirituality with wide-eyed naivety and gullibility. Being suspicious and cautious allows us to practice discernment which cuts through the bullshit and protects us from being used and abused.
But there is a big difference between carrying healthy caution and completely rejecting all those who charge money for their services.
I’ll explain why …
Is it Okay to Charge Money For Spiritual Services?
My answer is: it depends.
If you are motivated purely by greed (or the desire to accumulate great wealth and “get rich”), then you need to rethink your motivations. People are not stupid and they can sniff out BS and insincerity ten miles away.
So not only is being motivated by money for money’s sake disrespectful towards those you serve, but it is also a bad idea for your business and damaging to nearly all aspects of your life.
If – on the other hand – you’re motivated by the desire to make a living from doing what you love (which is helping others), then charging for your spiritual services is appropriate and acceptable.
Why?

Shouldn’t “a genuinely spiritual person offer all of their help free of charge?” – as I’ve heard numerous people proclaim.
My answer is that sure, if you feel called to offer your spiritual services free of charge, that is wonderful. Sol and I do it here on lonerwolf every single week (as do many other people in the spiritual field).
But expecting that a person should offer all their time and energy for free (in the name of “spirituality”) is unrealistic. I can tell you for a start that this entire website would not exist without the financial support from our readers and donators.
And I’ll go on the explain more below. But first, let’s explore some arguments for and against involving money in the spiritual domain.
Arguments For and Against
Here are a few common arguments against money and spirituality, with my response below each:
1. If you’re spiritual you shouldn’t want money – people who want money are greedy and materialistic.
My response: So long as you are motivated by the genuine desire to help others, making money isn’t a problem. It is a gross generalization and misconception to say that those who want money are greedy and materialistic. Perhaps they want money to help support their families? Perhaps they want money to pay the bills? Perhaps they want money to support their sick loved ones? Perhaps they want money to pay for an education that will help them spread knowledge throughout the world?
2. You shouldn’t be charging money for a gift you’ve gained freely from the universe!
My response: You ARE the Universe. Free will and personal sovereignty mean that you can share that gift with the world in whatever way you like. It’s time to stop thinking about your gifts like they’re handouts and start owning them as qualities of your own Soul.
3. Spirituality is about personal sacrifice, it’s not about personal profit!
My response: Spirituality is not solely about personal sacrifice – although that forms a part of it. Spirituality is also about personal fulfillment, helping others, and spreading your message through the world – all of which are supported and furthered by money.
4. As soon as you make a business out of spirituality you’ve stopped being spiritual because you’re motivated by money now.
My response: Just because you have a spiritual business that generates profit doesn’t mean you are driven exclusively by getting rich. Authentic spiritual businesses use money as a way to further their message to help others.
Here are some other reasons why I believe money and spirituality can coexist harmoniously (in the right hands):
- Money helps to spread and propagate a message throughout the world – websites, books, videos, and workshops don’t just materialize out of thin air, they require money to make, edit, product, and spread
- Money allows you to do what you love for a living and feel a sense of self-fulfillment
- Money allows you to pay the bills while also helping others
- Money is an equal exchange of energy – it allows others to give something for receiving something
- Charging money for your services is a sign of self-respect – it signifies that you believe in and trust what you do enough to place value on it
- Money is an investment of time and energy – basic psychology shows that people value what they pay for way more than what they receive for free
Do I think those that all spiritual services should have a price tag? No, of course not. Not everyone has the privilege of being able to afford premium services. Not everyone has money to spare or a wealthy cultural background, and that’s okay. This is where balance is needed. I believe that heart-centered spiritual businesses need to offer both free and paid content.
We don’t have to be self-sacrificing martyrs who give away all of our time and energy, nor do we need to be gluttons who focus on making big bucks. We can walk the middle path, respect what we have to offer, use money to spread our message and pay our bills, while also helping those who can’t afford premium services with free content or products.
As a heart-centered business owner, I can tell you that lonerwolf would have died long ago if it wasn’t for the help of advertisements and products. Furthermore, without generating some kind of profit, I wouldn’t be able to pay the bills and do what I love for a living – instead, I’d be dutifully working in some mediocre job not fulfilling my potential.
I have money to thank for the propagation of this website and its ability to spread the messages here worldwide to millions of people. Thanks to money I’ve been able to make my dream a reality and create a ripple effect of positive change in the world.
What about Money, Spirituality, and Manifesting?
Manifesting is a popular topic that is spoken about a lot in the spiritual community.
Essentially, manifesting is the art of creating what you want. It works on the principles of like attracts like. For example, if you think, feel, and believe that you will receive something, the law of the Universe dictates that eventually, you will receive that thing.
However, there’s a lot of woo-woo BS connected with manifesting. You can read more about that in our Law of Attraction article.
For the purposes of this article we’re talking specifically about manifesting and money. So the question is: Is it okay to try and manifest money?
Let’s face it, money is what makes our capitalist societies turn around – we need it to pay our bills, get healthcare, move from A to B, eat, drink, and support our families. If you are lacking money, there is nothing wrong with asking the Universe (or whatever higher power you believe in) for help.
But there is a difference between asking for help and giving the Universe a shopping list. Trying to “manifest more money” simply for the purposes of being wealthier verges on spiritual materialism. Spiritual materialism is a term coined by Tibetan Buddhist teacher Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche and describes the practice of using spirituality as a justification to pursue empty desires and attachments.
As described in my article about why the law of attraction creates so much suffering:
There is nothing wrong with wanting to have more money, find your true love or achieve your goals. But when you believe all of these things will bring you the happiness you want, you’re stuck on another hamster wheel of suffering. The LOA starts to reinforce enslavement and obsession with desires rather than being a valuable tool to use mindfully. The more you try to chase and “manifest” things, the further you get from the truth that true happiness can be found right here, in the present moment, regardless of what you do or don’t have. Even when you DO get what you so desperately wanted, you start fearing that it will be taken away from you! So you start clinging to, protecting, and fighting to keep what you’ve been given. Does this sound like a recipe for peace or well being to you?
So no, it’s not unhealthy to ask the Universe to help you make more money. This is a perfectly normal and healthy drive, especially because making money is a fundamental survival need.
But when your spiritual practice is driven solely by the desire to accumulate more wealth just for the sake of being rich, you have a problem.
Money and Spirituality – It’s All About the Intention
As we’ve seen, money and spirituality can coexist harmoniously.
When you have money, you have the resources to reach thousands, even millions of people with your message.
Money also helps us all to do what we love (while paying the bills), serves as a respectful exchange of energy, and attracts those who are willing to sincerely invest in our work.
Money itself is not evil, it is our intentions that can be tainted with dark motives. In other words, it’s all about the motives we have and what we carry within our hearts.
In order to maintain a healthy relationship with money in your spiritual practice it’s vital to:
- Be conscious of your motivations
- Live in alignment with your values
- Be ethical and transparent
- Be generous
- Be grateful for what you receive
I hope this article has created a bit more clarity surrounding the complex topic of money and spirituality.

Hi, Thank you for this article. Many years ago, when I was still learning my craft, one of the first things I was told was ” If you charge money for your services, you’ll lose your gift. Instead ask for a donation.” This advice, among other things subconsciously affected both my use of my gift and my financial situation. When it became hard to pay the bills, I stopped using my gift and took a “real job” to make the money I needed. After a lifetime of this, I have come to realize that I was never happy or fulfilled, regardless of the job I worked. I have now, once again, begun to re-explore my spirituality and attempt to reconnect with my gifts. The only difference is that now I understand that what I offer with love is worth the fee I ask for it. As you said, it not only pays my bills but funds my ability to share my messages with others. Thank you for this website, I’m glad I found you.
Thank you so much for this, I find at the moment my husband and I clash a lot on this because I am not interested in money I am on you tube and I have a blog where I share my spiritual journey and what I am learning but I do not charge. He on the other hand wants to work from home and reads everything about the law of attraction and watches business videos and how to make millions etc and its very difficult for us to understand one another. I sent him this article hoping I can learn to value money a little and that he can see my side and we can both find balance again. I am just starting my journey and starting to do shadow work etc I feel like I am changing so fast its making me feel uncomfortable and unsure where I am but I hope things will settle as I grow. I am so thankful for your articles I am disabled I cannot work and our government just took my disability benefits off me so paying for things like courses to develop is so hard but I have faith things will come and things will happen when they are meant to you know? This article was very interesting I need to find a way to work through my issues with money I worry I am stopping money flow but I am trying to learn from it
Although as strange it may seem no amount of money in this world will secure u.
Emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually that is. :)
Exactly…how are y suppose to live life abundantly if u restrict your money flow? U won’t ull end up poor or constantly working for the rest of your life and u wouldn’t be getting paid what ur worth. And we are worth plenty. But we are only worth what we feel we are worth. We are a reflection of our lives. I guess it’s just a question of how much u believe ur worth. Money is neutral it is not evil in itself it is a solidified form of energy. It is the person behind the money that will use it for doing unloving things or loving things. With money u can express a greater compassion and there for spreading the wealth around helping u get the life experiences u and everyone else needs to be more trancendant and wise. That’s the way the system is and that’s the game we play the game of life and money is in there with u on the spiritual journey.
Thank you Infinite Eternal. Whether we like it or not, money is there with us on the spiritual journey, and we need to come to terms with it. So many shadows and fears surround money that it’s a worthy place to start when doing shadow work. I like what you say about money being a solidified form of money – interesting! And true. The beginning of your comment also reminds me of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The best way to meet our spiritual needs is to first meet our basic survival needs (which includes money). We’ll be too distracted to spiritually grow if we are struggling and scrounging around constantly for money.
I appreciate your thoughts!
Great article.
I have been told, have I ever considered charging for my gifts. This article is great, it clears up some thoughts as well. I have given it some considerable thought. Reading the article brought a thought to mind. What were we 100, 200, 500 years ago. If there is someone in the village / town. If someone was in need of assistance, they would bring an offering. In many cases in older times it may be a loaf of bread, a chicken or some rice. I agree that an offering can be made. As for those that are out there swindling other, they will earn theirs.
Thank you and kind regards,
Exactly, Pietro. It’s also a sign of self-respect (in my opinion) to incorporate money exchange mindfully into what we do. Self-sacrificing is not noble to me, it’s a form of self-abuse. When we have no boundaries, no way to ensure to people seeking our assistance are sincere and appreciate what we do, we attract the energy leeches, attention seekers, trolls, and those seeking to use us. There must be an equal exchange of energy – and the object of that in our modern world is money.
Thanks for sharing here!
Thank you! Brilliant writing and points. I needed this. Bless y’all
Thanks Melissa. :)
I read a quote a few years back that I fell in love with: “What if the cure for cancer is inside of the mind of a child who can not afford to go to college?” This also applies to monetizing spirituality and healing arts and helping people along their ascension paths. I do agree wholeheartedly that nothing in and of itself is evil, it is the intent behind them which is evil (or pure). So, I do not believe it is inherently wrong to charge for spiritual services, but I have always found it quite odd that for a community that preaches that the goal is to awaken the earth as quickly as possible that they would advocate so heavily for slowing down the process by excluding those who cannot afford their services. It becomes an elite group where those who can partake in these services are usually well-off (or at least with enough disposable income to invest). So, these forms of spirituality and healing often neglect those who need it most. There is nothing inclusive about this, nor is this a way to speed up the ascension process on earth (assuming that this is even a legitimate goal). There is no one size fits all. There are things that others swear by which do not particularly assist in my own growth and I have spent time and money I did not have flittering from one thing to the next trying to find that which resonated with me. I am not rich. These services cost money. Eventually, I got tired (and broke) looking for things I believed would help me. When I saw one more thing that I thought I might like to try, guess what? I could no longer afford it and was also disheartened at wondering if even if I were able to scrounge together money, if it would be just more waste. The “healers” then put those who cannot afford their services in the category of those who don’t take their spiritual growth seriously because they aren’t “making the investment in themselves”. The ones who have money to spend on their services are serious and those who don’t are just stuck in fear.
I always said that if I were to start helping others along this awakening path, I would charge for services eventually, but I would also offer these same services for free routinely for those who cannot afford it but are interested. When you really offer nothing free of charge or what you offer free of charge is significantly less than what you offer in your “packages”, then you are saying that only a certain group of elite people deserve to get the help you are so convinced you offer.
There is a female whose motto states that it is selfish to not earn as much as you can because when you earn more, you can spread your message more. I agreed with this for a while (and a part of me does still see some measure of validity in this), but the problem is that once you become one of these “self-help gurus” making so much money, are you even helping people anymore? You gross so much money and live so lavishly that yes, your message is reaching more people, but it becomes a purely money-driven set of goals where you aren’t encouraging people to tap into themselves, you are trying to teach them how to get rich like you. People start buying that dream instead of what he point of ascension really is. Not to mention that turning it into a business in this matter makes the “teacher” have to play up the notion of being perfect so the relatability ceases to exist as they must put on this persona of the guru who has all the answers instead of a flawed human being and soul still learning and growing themselves. It’s a slippery slope.
I love ur post my friend
Thank you very much.
Also the truth is it doesn’t matter how old u get day after day u Still have something to learn.
I agree completely! Society teaches that the way to help others is to become an “expert” and to present nothing but a knowledgeable front. Of course, you should have some idea of what you are saying, but all anyone can ever speak of is the authenticity of their own experience and this changes as you change and this type of growth isn’t really seen or promoted in this way. I know for me, it left me feeling inadequate thinking there was some threshold I have yet to cross (and would never cross). I realize that part of being a teacher is really just telling your story, telling what has helped you and what you have come to realize about things on your own path and allow those who resonate and who need to hear it to come to you and search themselves for the answer rather than selling a “one size fits all”/“I mastered myself and you can too” packages. This is how I have been learning-not by following packaged steps.
Yes, I very much agree with what you’re saying Winter. These points are so valid and well elucidated.
The self-help/spiritual realm can indeed be a slippery slope. Those who profess one thing on the surface can live out another thing deep down. That’s why to me shadow work (or whatever one chooses to call it) needs to be a key part of the journey. If we can’t stop from time to time and take an honest look at ourselves, we’re delusional. We’re living a lie. We’re “the blind leading the blind.”
Those who don’t have the financial resources to afford expensive spiritual services are perhaps those who need the most help. That’s one of the reasons why the products Mateo and I have created are kept in the affordable range. Expecting someone to pay $100+ is not realistic. I also like the donation-based models of giving, where a person pays what they can for a service. I’ll be looking into that more.
What you’ve raised is such a worthy and important aspect of money and spirituality. Thank you for putting it out there and starting a conversation. :)
Thank you. I truly fell in love with your writings (as well and Sol’s) and I have always resonated with the authenticity in them, in addition to the what you charge for your works. I have found they have assisted me more than the services I have spent considerably more on and I am forever grateful to the both of you.

<3 much love
Great article :) I am just really starting out with crystal healing and have been struggling with this. You have given me quite a few things to think about. Thank you!
Thanks Kelly! I’m so glad this has been some valuable food for thought. :)
A. P. Giannini the founder of the Bank of America, stated that money spoils people, always have, and always will which is why he gave most of his money away while still having a comfortable life. Studies have shown that the more people make, the less generous they become.
Really were are these studies that show? That may be for u my friend if u want it to be…and I’m sure not all people don’t do that. It is the feeling thst gravitates the money to u because u believe u are already In the state of having the money…and if u are aligned with the God force within u u will see thst there is no reason to hoard money…matter of fact if u keep the feeling inside u that u are still abundant and money keeps flowing even after u gave to many…u still will stay with the money flow. If u have found satisfaction within u will not strive to fill the void with money hoarding. .after all when everything is said and done and u die everything u did to others u did to yourself.
Thanks Gunther and Infinite Eternal for the discussion.
While I think it’s great to be generous and give our money to those who are less fortunate, as in the case of Giannini, in my perspective we need balance. Going to the extreme and giving away most of our money may not be suitable or appropriate for everyone. But hoarding money is not the way either. Both are extremes in behavior. Ultimately, I think what matters here is what’s in our hearts and what we value.
Why are all the photos here of beautiful young women? I have found that this is usually the case with articles on spirituality.
There are older women with depths of knowledge and experience in their faces, and equally men.
Celsi
Cause that’s what they desired to put on there…and who knows maybe they’ll invite thst idea in if they so choose.
Hi Celsi. This is a valid point.
I use what images I can find – and the images I use are dependant on what other people choose to take and share. Unfortunately, this means that there aren’t many images of older women that I can find. These are free stock images, but if anyone out there is a photographer who is more age-inclusive and would like to share their images, you’re welcome to contact me: https://lonerwolf.com/contact/
The article is, as usual dear A., wise and fair. The discussion goes straight to the heart of our problems as humans made of matter, that is, our materialism whether we want to be or not. I read through all the comments from latest to earliest and had to skim sometimes. The most recent, analyzing the feudal element in economy as applied to the modern age, was deep. The first comment, lamenting the use of only attractive women for illustrations, I actually do not find valid although in theory it’s as fair as any other complaint about how we’re all brainwashed and enslaved. I am so troubled by the interrelationships between glamour, class struggle, and the psychology of stunted spiritual ecstasy that I can only use this trouble as fuel for my simultaneous enormous faith in our potential here on this awesome planet. Look at how “the system” wears us down by constantly making us think of getting ahead or at least staying warm and keeping the family fed! Look at how the way we love is determined by the hands we were dealt – where nature, nurture, temperament, looks and so much more walk hand in hand with finance portfolio from birth onward! Just maintaining a huge ocean of compassion for everyone on the wheel is a full-time job.
