What is Soul-Led Creativity? (5 Prompts to Get Started)

Soul-led creativity ensoulment image

Ensoulment means infusing something with a Soul โ€“ giving life to something beautiful, meaningful, and precious.ย

And I can see no better way of doing that than through the sacred path of creativity.

Yes, creativity is sacred. Creativity itself is a spiritual path or what is known as the via creativa (path of creativity).ย

Spiritual Wanderer Course image

Spiritual Wanderer Course:

โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ "I started the Spiritual Wanderers Course a short while ago and for the first time in twelve years I have started to experience love, acceptance and compassion for myself and within myself. Thank you so much." โ€“ Vivienne S.

Creativity is also how we grow, heal, integrate, and give back to the world.

We are all creators, whether we know or believe it or not.ย

Your mind, which dreams up infinite possibilities, your words which weave realities, and your actions which manifest your inner world, are all expressions of the Divine creative force.

Based on various spiritual traditions, we can call this creative force Shakti, Tao, Prana, Chi, the Holy Spirit, the Muse, and Spirit.

We all have access to this energy as it is the animating life force within and without us โ€“ the same spark that pumps the human heart, moves the wind, creates galaxies, and forms mountains.ย

As a spiritual wanderer, Iโ€™ve always been drawn toward the path of creativity. It has saved my sanity more times than I can count, supporting me through the depths of darkness and the heights of joy.

Itโ€™s for this reason that I wanted to write more about the practice of ensoulment and, more specifically, Soul-led creativity today.

โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ "Receiving these messages is a beacon of light and hope for me in currently very challenging times. The words of wisdom speak right to my soul, guiding and encouraging me further on my path. I highly recommend Shadow & Light to everyone who seeks to develop and cultivate a relationship with the Inner Self." โ€“ Karin

This is a sacred path that has not only resulted in the birth and nurturance of this website, but it has also helped me to heal in more ways than I can count.

If youโ€™re feeling a bit lost or pathless right now, Iโ€™m going to give you a few basic ideas on how to make Soul-led creativity more present in your life.

Soul-Led Creativity (Ensoulment) & the Spiritual Wandererโ€™s Journey โ€“ The Benefits

Ai generated image of a wolf on a spiritual journey through colorful mountain ranges

As I mentioned above, creativity โ€“ and in particular, Soul-led creativity โ€“ is how we grow, heal, integrate, and give back to the world.

Spiritual wanderers and lone wolf characters have always been drawn to creativity as a spiritual path.

Just look at examples like William Blake, Simone Weil, Carl Jung, Emily Dickinson, and Walt Whitman. All of these people engaged in some form of creative Soul expression.

I bet thereโ€™s a strong chance that if youโ€™re here reading this right now, youโ€™re an artist, innovator, or creator at heart. It may even be a strong part of your identity or a deeper calling in this life.

Regardless of whether you see yourself in this light or not, Soul-led creativity is beneficial at any and all stages of the spiritual wandererโ€™s journey of awakening.

Hereโ€™s why. Putting your Soul into creating something helps you to โ€ฆย

  • Feel more grounded
  • Serve as a practical form of ‘Soul retrieval‘
  • Find more sanity when times are dark
  • Express your inner thoughts and feelings in a satisfying way
  • Process difficult traumas and wounds
  • Understand your psyche and unconscious mind better
  • Feel more relaxed, centered, and at peace
  • Integrate what youโ€™ve learnedย
  • Rediscover a feeling of meaning/purpose
  • Release trapped or blocked energy
  • Connect with your inner child
  • Open your heart
  • Self-actualize your gifts
  • Hear the voice of your Soul
  • Learn important lessons
  • Feel like youโ€™re meaningfully giving back
  • Discover a sense of inner completion and fulfillment

Iโ€™d say this is just the tip of the iceberg โ€“ ensoulment is a path that enriches every aspect of life. Take it from someone that has been doing this for many years.

Soul-Led Creativity as the Way Forward (When Youโ€™re Wondering โ€œWhatโ€™s Next?โ€)

Image of a rainbow above a mountain range

Ensoulment โ€“ the path of Soul-led creative self-expression โ€“ is what helps us during the final two stages of the spiritual wandererโ€™s journey, which are rebirth and integration.

If youโ€™ve been doing a lot of healing inner work and are now wondering โ€œwhatโ€™s next?โ€ this is whatโ€™s next.

Would you like to save this?

We'll email this article to you, so you can come back to it later!

Your information will never be shared.

All the greatest wisdom teachers through the ages found some form of Soul-led creativity to give back to this planet.ย

Just look at Lao Tzu and his timeless Tao Te Ching, Buddha and his eightfold path, and Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity congregation.ย

There are so many others I could name, like Helena Blavatsky and her theosophical society, the writings and music of mystic Hildegard of Bingen, Jesus and his gospel, and many others.ย

The key here is to understand that creativity comes in many shapes and forms.ย

You donโ€™t need to start painting huge masterpieces if your Soul doesnโ€™t resonate with them. Neither do you need to do anything traditionally โ€œartsyโ€ if thatโ€™s not your disposition.ย

Just look at nature, the very embodiment of creativity. It is infinitely varied. The point here is not to try to be a flower if youโ€™re a cactus. Donโ€™t try to be a rock if youโ€™re a snowflake.ย

Find what shape your Soul wants to take in this world.

How to Practice Soul-Led Creativityย

Ai generated image of a rainbow between two mountain ranges

There are many lengthy tangents I could take, but I want to make this direct and to the point. The main ingredients are:

  1. Openness to try new paths
  2. Discernment to tune out external input and listen to your inner voice
  3. Courage to โ€œfailโ€ (aka., have awkward but necessary learning experiences) and to be seen publicly
  4. Humility to change course or direction where necessary
  5. Commitment to dedicate daily time to your creative path (yes, daily)
  6. Self-awareness to know what you need to say, do, or express; to have a vision
  7. Yin yang balance of the mind and heart working in unison toward the same goal

If youโ€™d like me to explore any of these elements of Soul-led creativity more in the future, let me know below in the comments.

But again, I want to reiterate that Soul-led creativity can come in many varieties.

Here are some examples:

  • Writing fiction, non-fiction, poetry
  • Drawing/painting
  • Creating videos
  • Making music
  • Starting a blog/vlog
  • Tending a garden
  • Hosting a community event
  • Developing a philosophy of life
  • Dancing
  • Raising conscious children
  • Creating a theory or thesis
  • Making an app
  • Baking or making food
  • Interior designing
  • Running a Soul-led business

Can you think of more examples to share below? There are some more examples in my ensoulment article.

The point here is that Soul-led creativity is not mind or ego-centered creativity which looks for validation, accolades, and status.

Soul-led creativity comes from the depths of our being. It is a form of self-actualization, self-fulfillment, and spiritual accomplishment.

Soul-led creativity heals, expands, opens, and unifies our inner and outer worlds โ€“ it is the unique form of magic we give back to the world.

It is our humble spiritual legacy, our contribution to humanity.

To help you get started, here are a few reflective journaling prompts to meditate on:

  • How does your Soul yearn to express itself? Notice what first pops into your mind and take note, even if it sounds wild, “unachievable,” or outlandish.
  • Identify what would need to change in your daily routine to include space for more Soul-led creativity. What old habits or unfulfilling uses of your time can you replace?
  • What is the difference between your ego’s desire to create and your Soul’s desire to create? Name three major differences.
  • What lessons or wisdom does your Soul wish to share with others? Describe them in as much detail as you can.
  • What would be the best way to express or share the wisdom you’ve gained through hard-earned life experiences?
  • If you could leave behind a creative Soul-led legacy in this world, what would that look like (no matter how big or small)? Don’t be shy. Let your imagination roam wild! Then reflect deeply on what you’ve written.

These are just a few basic questions, but they can open up worlds of insight. See what comes up for you!

There is much we are all yet to learn of multi tasking using our gifts and talents completely. But even more so when we find the Soul or creative essence comes into play. Yes, we are all creative but few retain the drive and practise of each creative skill. Especially if the Soul Creation embellishes the gift to the World and to others. Making useful items with full feeling and open heart can make gifts that capture others hearts and minds for years to come.

Which raises vibes of synchronicity and consciousness for all of us. Just simple acts of kindness and treasures from the inner world builds a better life.

May you both have an insanely happy Xmas

The drive and practice parts that you mention are the trickiest aspects when it comes to Ensoulment – but also the most vital. I love the book War of Art, as it goes into this way more in depth. May you have an insanely happy Xmas too, John ๐Ÿ’œ

I don’t see five distinct ways but many modes of exploring soul led creativity. Maybe you should explicit the five methods or rework the title. But quite an in-depth list of journaling prompts

Thank you for the article- it was just the boost I needed! I have a question about ego-driven vs. soul-led. I have always been a writer, and I published two books just as a hobby while I was engaging in more traditional jobs. I have now come to the realization that I want to make this my life’s work- but to do that, I need to be successful and make money off my creativity. I feel very torn because if I could write without being dependent on the outcome, I would. It feels like I am competing and comparing my work because ideally I would get a big publisher to do all the marketing for me. How do you step away from the ego while still being invested in your own success? Thank you!!

Iโ€™m glad this article gave you the boost you needed, Molly :) There will always be pragmatic considerations when trying to make a living from doing something your heart and soul yearns to do. Wanting to make money and find stability is normal, as is competing and comparing oneโ€™s work. Just be aware of these tendencies. Sometimes theyโ€™re needed to get by in this big wide world, which is an inconvenient fact. But if these desires for being the biggest or best are predominantly driving your actions, thatโ€™s when I would take a step back and realign with your deeper needs.

It would be a great gift if you would explore soul creativity further. This is what I most want to do, yet my self criticism and perfectionism gets in the way. Also, “Praying in Color” was recommended to me. Are you familiar with it? Thank you for all that you do, Joanne Linn

Self-criticism and perfectionism are totally normal โ€” Iโ€™ve experienced them a lot too, and sometimes still do, but the practice of self-compassion has helped to soften these voices through the years. Iโ€™m not familiar with that book, but I will look it up. Thanks Joanne!

Thank you for this! Iโ€™ve been working on writing a book about my Personalized Healing journey for years now and I often feel unmotivated to continue. Itโ€™s innovative and insightful, but my mind isnโ€™t always aligned with my heart and soul; thinking of all kinds of reasons why people just arenโ€™t ready for this message, how they will look at me as broken because Iโ€™ve suffered great trauma, etc. The list goes on and onโ€ฆ.and Iโ€™ve been alone for way too many years to feel I can really connect with others.

I truly appreciate your insights and the safe space youโ€™ve created for people like me to express how we feel, without judgment. That is such a beautiful gift!

This was a very interesting article. As one who is lost in life this did resonate. But I would like to understand more about what you mean by this. Do you mean that creativity and expressing the message deep within one’s heart is what can be their purpose? The examples and activities were cool. I am curious to learn more
