I’m often asked why we decided to call our website ‘LonerWolf.’
My answer is that the wolf carries one of the most profound meanings in the whole of the animal kingdom.
Spirit Animals, for centuries, have been seen as sources of meaning, wisdom, and power. ย
Spiritual Wanderer Course:
โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ "I started the Spiritual Wanderers Course a short while ago and for the first time in twelve years I have started to experience love, acceptance and compassion for myself and within myself. Thank you so much." โ Vivienne S.
At their origins, Spirit Animals have been symbolic guides of our journeys of self-discovery and spiritual awakening.
Before psychology, animals were used as a means to learn about ourselves. Wolves, out of all animals, have a particularly complex and rich series of lessons to teach us.
The innate traits of the Wolf are having a powerful instinct, finely tuned intuition, and high intelligence.
The Wolf roams the wild with a thirst for freedom, working within a social environment.
Young wolves on the brink of sexual maturity will often leave the group in search of their mate, losing all of their familial connections. ย
These ‘lone wolves‘ must learn to fend for themselves without the help of any social group: they must become stronger. Hence our name “lonerwolf.” (Read more about our name choice here.)

Wolf Spirit Animal Meaning
Ancient cultures and indigenous people believe that animals and humans share the same spiritual essence with each other. ย
They also believed that some animals are attracted to and present themselves to us in specific moments of our lives to reveal messages.
The Wolf Spirit Animal is symbolic of listening to your intuition, seeking freedom, embracing aloneness and togetherness, being loyal and trusting, and having courage and determination to walk your true path.
(Remember that you can take our free Spirit Animal Quiz after reading this article!)
In summary, the Wolf Spirit Animal symbolizes:
- Strong connection with your instincts or intuition
- High intelligence
- Loyalty and communication
- A deep desire for freedom
- Loyalty and trust
If Wolf is your Spirit Animal, the following Soul lessons will apply to you:
1. Connect With Your Instincts
Wolf is a loyal and highly intelligent animal here to remind you of the need to connect with your instincts and hunches.
As a creature ruled by primal instinct, Wolf highlights the importance of listening to your intuition more. Do you tend to get lost in your thoughts? Does your mind fall into repetitive cycles of overthinking, planning, or analyzing? Does your mind struggle to turn off at night?
Wolf has come into your life to help you get in touch with the raw and perceptive side of yourself that is beyond thought. You are a person who has been blessed with strong intuitive abilities, YET you have not fully owned or developed this gift. Itโs time to trust your gut feelings more and learn to distinguish intuition from fear-based feelings.
Intuitive insight will always feel clear and unemotional, whereas fear-based feelings will be emotionally charged. Wolf is here to help you learn how to make this important distinction.
Would you like to save this?
Your information will never be shared.
Here I want to highlight that Wolf represents the Pathfinder.ย
She is a guide that helps you discover when you are being misguided by the mind and being led correctly when using your instincts.
Having Wolf as a spirit animal serves to emphasize your levels of trust or mistrust in your instincts and intuition.
Connecting with and learning to use your intuition will help you to make more soul-aligned decisions, โsniffโ out the true intentions of others, and avoid many pitfalls on your life journey.
2. Search For Freedom
Wolf also carries the message of freedom. In a pack, Wolf carries the meaning of connection (more on that soon), but when alone, Wolf is the very embodiment of independence.
She asks you to examine what core beliefs are currently holding you back from stepping into your power. In what ways are you limiting your own freedom? What habits or behavioral patterns are keeping you enslaved? Itโs time to confront these shadows head-on. Wolf will be by your side.
Wolves are wild animals โ they are beautiful creatures of mystery that cannot be domesticated. ย
If a Wolf appears to you at a certain period of your life when you’re in doubt about the changes that are happening, it can reassure you that the path you’re taking is the right oneย and that you’re being loyal to your instincts.
Equally, if the Wolf presents itself in a moment in life where you feel stuck, it might be reminding you that you’re a free spirit, that you can deviate from whatever path you are currently on and become a ‘lone wolf‘ if necessary to pursue your dreams.
3. Have Courage and Determination
Courage is the next message shared by Wolf. It takes a lot of courage and determination to walk alone. Wolf has come into your life to remind you of the inner strength lying deep at the core of your being.
As an extremely powerful ally for the spiritual journey, Wolf reminds you that the path of enlightenment is often a lonely road. No one can do the work for you. You might find teachers, friends, or useful techniques along the way, but ultimately spiritual growth is a solitary path.
You must be the one to take full responsibility for yourself, your shadows, and your ultimate awakening โ and that takes true courage.
Having Wolf as your spirit animal indicates that you are either experiencing spiritual roadblocks or need more support and guidance. You might be feeling lost, confused, lonely, disconnected from others, or suffering from severe societal disillusionment.
Wolf also points to the fact that you might even be going through a Dark Night of the Soul in which you have tasted what peace and spiritual freedom feels like but then โlostโ it and feel like youโre stumbling around in the dark again. Perhaps you have completely lost touch with your soul. If this is the case, Wolf is a supreme ally who will loyally guide and help you find your way again.
4. Find More Connection
The other message Wolf brings is also one of connection. In nature, Wolf has a highly complex, loyal, and intimate bond with other pack members. She is prepared to fight to the death to protect those of her tribe.

Wolf truly is the master of standing firmly in her own power while also belonging to a community, to something greater than herself.
Depending on how Wolf appears to you and what she shares with you, the message will either be one of needing to embrace the solitary path or seek social harmony with others.
It is unnecessary to renounce everyday life and be a monk who meditates alone in a temple to be spiritual. Often, the best and wisest path of spiritual, emotional, and mental development are the relationships already present in your life. What better way to learn qualities such as patience, tolerance, and humor?
Wolf teaches the need to seek more understanding and compassion in your relationships. If you constantly experience friction, Wolf can help you learn how to practice empathy or the ability to place yourself into the shoes of another mentally.
Qualities such as loyalty, dedication, protectiveness, and selflessness can also be honed within your relationships through the support of Wolf.
5. Find Your True Tribe
On a similar but slightly different note, Wolf also brings the message of deep connection.
If you have been feeling misunderstood, isolated, or taken for granted, itโs time to reassess those whom you allow into your โpack.โ Not all of theย connections that we have in this life are genuine, healthy, or deep. In fact, many people in our lives are huge sources of toxicity and energy loss.
Examine the people in your tribe. Are they pulling their weight? Do they give equally to what you give?
Wolf also indicates that you might have some unhealthy social connections which need to be attended to. In order to live from a place of personal power, Wolf advises you to let go of any connections that donโt support and nourish you. While this can be a difficult task, it is a form of empowerment. Why keep those around who demoralize you?
Once you free up space and let go of toxic connections, you will have more energy to attract those into your pack who truly support and love you.
6. Be Loyal and Trusting
When the Wolf appears, either physically, through meditation, via spiritual signs and omens, or through a dream, it’s often a way of telling you that you need to explore your relationship with loyalty and trust.
Wolf’s sense of loyalty can be seen in a variety of ways. ย
These creatures are one of the few animals to hold only monogamous relationships. Most wolves mate for life and will not take another partner if their own dies. ย
Pack members also hold deep emotional bonds, greeting each other enthusiastically after they have been separated for long periods of time.
The presence of a Wolf spirit animal can serve as a reminder of a lack of loyalty or trust in your life.ย
Often Wolf shows itself to those who have become strongly apprehensive of bonding with others and have grown immensely mistrusting of those around them. ย
A Wolf spirit animal can represent a perceived threat or feeling, for instance: that you are being threatened by someone or something in your life.
As Wolf’s main trait is its sharp instinct, your Wolf spirit animal could be trying to tell you that you’re misguided in your trust for someone, or it may be warning you to listen more often to your instincts or intuition and to be loyal to yourself.
The Wolf spirit animal may also be your unconscious mind’s way of letting you know that it is feeling vulnerable โ for instance, that you might have revealed too much to someone about yourself โ and now your sense of freedom feels constricted by the predatory mistrust of that person.
Wolf may also signify that the people you’re trying to connect with at the moment are making you feel afraid.
However, mistrust doesn’t always have to do with other people. Sometimes our mistrust and lack of loyalty are directed toward ourselves. Are you loyal and trusting toward yourself?

History of the Wolf Spirit Animal
The Wolf has appeared many times throughout history. ย
In modern culture, we associate wolves with negative qualities, such as the darkness that mythical Werewolves (the story ofย Lycaon the King and Zeus) represent. ย
In Aesop’s fables, for instance, they are portrayed as being evil and dangerous, such as in the story of “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” and “The Wolf in Sheep Clothing.” ย The Brothers Grimm story of “Little Red Riding Hood” also portrays the Wolf as ferocious and intimidating.

Luckily, wolves haven’t always been seen in such a negative light. ย In fact, wolves and humans once lived together, according to some historians. They also share many parallel human traits.
Native Americans perhaps had the greatest symbolism for wolves. They modeled themselves after the Wolf in hunting methods, cooperation, and efficiency, valuing them as proud hunters, loyal friends, and intelligent teachers. ย
They also thought of the Wolf as a spiritual pathfinder, which symbolized intelligence and leadership.
Rome has one of the best-known Wolf-founding legends. ย As the legend goes, Romulus and Remus, the two founding brothers of Rome, were raised and suckled by a she-wolf.
In Egyptian mythology, the Wolfย Wepwawet (also rendered Upuaut, Wep-wawet, Wepawet, and Ophois) was originally a war deity, his name meaning; theย opener of the ways. ย
It’s interesting to note here that the Native Americans, a completely different race and culture of people, believed that wolves had a special connection to our paths in life as well.
The Mongolians, on the other hand, believed they were descendants of wolves. ย The legend goes that in Northern China, a small Turkic village was raided by Chinese soldiers, but one small baby was left behind. ย An old she-wolf named Asena found the baby and nursed him. ย She then gave birth to half-wolf, half-human cubs from which the Turkic people were born.
In Asia, the wolf is the guardian of the entrance to heavenly, celestial realms. ย The Wolf is also said to be among the ancestry of Genghis Khan.
Background Info on Wolves
The wolf is a beautiful, intelligent, and majestic creature that is the largest member of the Canidae family, which also includes domestic dogs, coyotes, dingoes, and many types of wild foxes.
There are two widely recognized species of wolf in the world: the red and the gray.
The wolfโs thick fur can be black, grey, or white and can protect against extremely cold temperatures (think -40 degrees!). Wolves live and hunt in packs that can range from two wolves to as many as twenty.
Packs are led by a dominant male and female, who are generally the only ones to breed and mate for life. When running, wolves can reach speeds of up to 65 km per hour (or 40 miles per hour), and they tend to hunt large animals such as deer.
When alone, the wolf hunts smaller animals such as rabbits, raccoons, and squirrels. These amazing animals have an extremely strong sense of smell and possess over 200 million scent cells, unlike humans, who only possess 5 million. Their haunting howl is used to communicate with fellow pack members and clearly define their territory.
The Wolf and Dream Interpretation
Native Americans knew that dreaming of a Wolf symbolized beauty, solitude, mystery, self-confidence, and pride. ย
If a Wolf appears in your dreams, it may signify that you’re approaching life with a composed and adaptable attitude.
On the negative side, a Wolf appearing in your dream might be warning you of hostility, domination, or aggression from others (or within yourself toward others). The Wolf might want to serve as a guide in a situation in your life where you feel vulnerable and weak.
Some dream psychoanalysts interpret wolves in nightmares as conveyors of a perceived threat, such as strong sexual energy occurring in your life (in you or someone close to you) or different types of addictive craving behaviors that you might be struggling with. ย
The story of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ was originally an allegoric metaphor for the loss of virginity (red hood) taken away by the predatory ‘Big Bad Wolf’ (men).
In positive dreams, psychoanalysts interpret the Wolf as a guiding symbol for trusting your instincts (again, sexual instincts and addictive ‘cravings’ play a role here) and expressing them in a more balanced way.

Longtime reader, first time commenter. This article caught my eye, because for about 11 years now I’ve been doubling as a wolf in some of my most profound dreams. I don’t know the full extent of my connection even after a decade, but I do believe what it represents to me is central in my life; last year I met an old man in my dreams who showed me an orb with that aspect of myself inside as the key to “marrying” the problems that were causing my lingering dark dreams and feelings. The first time I encountered that aspect of myself, I was only 14 years old and having terrible nightmares of cities and people that were anything but with no way to defend myself (or anyone else) from them until I chased one off with fangs.
Sometimes I would see myself as a werewolf, and sometimes I would see myself as a wolf. Sometimes people would be people, and sometimes they would be monsters in a world where darkness always seeped into the light areas and shadows were never just empty space. Transforming myself gave me the ability to not only defend myself and others, but to tell where danger was in the dark and how to navigate through it.
I’ve certainly felt alone, mistrustful, and without my connections the past few years and have struggled to balance the sorrows and bitterness of it with my desire to connect to others and make the world a better place. I keep feeling like something away from all of these petty problems and toxic social politics is calling to me when the running paths are clear of people and it’s snowing, storming, or raining — but only if I can leave it behind and focus.
I’m trying to remain focused on what’s meaningful when I’m surrounded by things I feel are drawing me away or holding me back that I don’t actually need to pay any attention to at all. There were never truly any monsters in the cities to begin with, nor was the darkness ever something that couldn’t be penetrated with keen intuition and a knowing of what to seek and what to ignore.
This article gave me some things to think about, so thank you both for that. I’m still trying to manifest the courage that sent me straight into my nightmares and brought me out victorious in sleep in my waking life.
Hola Leigh,
In my experience Wolves start to appear in moments when we are going through immense inner conflict. They represent the ‘darker’ aspects of man, the solitary loner who leaves the pack, the ‘baser’ desires of violence or sex that we try not to associate with ourselves.
But they are also the symbols of courage, of inner strength; the ‘animals’ that can overpower this false self we pretend to be and unleash our true authenticity.
Listen to the wolf carefully, go where it leads you and don’t resist whatever it is trying to teach you. This ‘shadow’ side of you is asking to be acknowledged, and it sounds like you’ve become aware of that.
All the best in your journey my friend, let me know if there’s anything I can help you with.
I understand completely how you feel. That is very much the way i feel towards life. Living in human form and yet being able to penetrate the darkness of mankind and being able to see what is really there. Its incredible isnt it? And it is also what makes people around us think we are crazy but its just that we can see things as they are, while most everyone else has been poisoned by the ways of mankind. By the way, are you from the PP?
Hello, a wolf manifested itself as my late hubby, and them jumped into me, I’ve been researching it since, have you heard of this before?
Hola Anna,
It sounds like a symbolic lesson to find wholeness, your soul feels fragmented after the loss of a soul mate and wishes to mend itself to find harmony.
There are many rituals of ‘communion’ that help with this.
Hi Luna and Sol, I never come to these kind of sites but the reason I am here today is because of an intriguing dream I had last night and I’m seeking to understand its meaning. A whole lot of my colleagues and I were resigning from work for various reasons. As we were leaving we were all following different paths into a forest. Some of my colleagues including myself came across wolves. They “my colleagues” were saying it would be easier to tame a wolf and sleep with it and that I should find one to tame. The problem is, the one I was looking at looked threatening in every manner, it was huge, lying down, giving me the side eye that said ‘don’t even think of trying to get near me’, it was like saying ‘I don’t think you should trust me or them’. I was freaked out because I couldn’t trust the wolves would remain loyal to me if I showed any signs of weakness at any point in my life. It felt like they would attack me if they so much as perceived any weakness in me. I then spotted a dragon and actually felt safer being surrounded by dragons and their fires than by wolves. Help me understand what does this dream mean.
Hola Angel,
When it comes to dream interpretation, it is a pretty personal task as we each assign our association with elements that appear in our dreams (for some snakes are scary, for others snakes are exotic and interesting).
That being said, if I were to interpret the dream from my own cultures dream Archetypes it would seem your subconscious mind is or will struggle between two choices that although may appear risky superficially, deep down one will prove to be a wiser path than the other.
Thank you Mateo <3
I had a beautiful dream last night, I was a young wolf, who met up with an older wolf and he took me to a desert, and said that this was a representation of me. He then showed me how to create abundance, we filled it in with the most beautiful forest and rivers.
Tonight is the blood moon and I never felt more ready for my path.
Thank you for your piece it was illuminating.
Peace and prosperity,
Jeffrey
Hola Jeff,
Guidance always comes when we are open and ready for it. Congratulations on finding your power animal, I look forward to hearing where your path takes you.
Warmly,
Sol
Outstanding work you are doing Mateo! Quite impressive.
This will be my first post here as I have just found this site. I would like to share two of my encounters that were significant to me before I was awakened.
2007- My daughter had just been born and were on a road trip through the Rockie Mountains in our Toyota 4 runner. Giant flakes of flufffy snow were falling which made the atmosphere quite surreal. As we drove on the lonesome highway, we had not seen another vehicle for quite some time. When we rounded a bend there was very big black timberwolf trotting along the the highway on the oncomming lane. I pulled up along side of it and told my wife, watch this- I was going to holler at thing (being part of my jovial nature) As I came along side of it, he was about five feet away from my open window. Just as I drew my breath to yell, that thing turned and looked me in the fac with it’s big yellow eyes. I froze, it has silenced both my body and mind- we continued on in silence for some time, contemplating its significance.
2009- Working out in the bush around Pearce River Alberta- Had just finnished a long day, it was dark out and I was driving down an old logging road when I noticed an object in the middle of the road ahead- I slowed down to find a GIANT white owl standing in the middle of the raod. As I approachedit took flight, speading an enormopus wing span. That owl flew about five in front and above of my windsheild for what seemed about a minute. At the time I was moved by its presence and could not help but feel that it meant something.
Hola Noraa,
Thank you for your kind words.
Your encounters with spirit animals sound fascinating. Have you ever found out the message these spirit guides were trying to share with you?
It has been my experience as well that your spirit guides change depending on the road blocks and psychological hindrances you might be experiencing at that very time.
Warmly,
Sol
hola mateo, beautiful words, thanks for sharing, i was wondering, what happens when one lone wolf finds another lone wolf and they could make a really good couple, but one of them is afraid of being in a relationship and leaving the solitude.?
Hola SteppenWolf,
Thank you. The question is not why are they afraid to leave solitude, but why are they afraid to enter a relationship? When solitude is used as a crutch to feel protected from making ourselves vulnerable to others, then it is not true solitude.
Uncertainty with promising joy (being in a relationship) is much more fearsome than the devil you know (safety in solitude and not dealing with fears of vulnerability).
I had a very vivid dream that involved a wolf and indian man and all the sites Ive visited are not helpful. Dream: I walked through soft grass and came across a sexy ass indian man and massive wolf. I felt like the wolf was mine and I buried my hand into his fur for comfort and affection. The man hugged me, I felt like we were together in a previous life. We laid down together he wrapped me in his arms and said I would be okay. Then I awoke.. wtf.. it felt so real and I felt like I was home in that dream. What was the meaning of this dream?
it means that you need a man =) one that has a wolf spirit
very nice and i really need a help. I do not know if it is positive or negative but as i am much awakened, i stopped watching television and other unnecessary things, but last day i watched twilight saga, which is actually by accident, as i rarely see those type of stories as boring as little shit, but at that night i just could not slept quietly for more than an hour. i even doubted my-self why i saw that picture. Is it due to fact that i shown interest to some too attracted people, especially one last days who is actually as like me or just as good signs? Help thank-you. by the way i don’t see differences in anybody but i am not in interest of anybody of those people though. So please if any advice if i did any good or too outrageous things.
hello i as usual see every human, my friends as equal, i love all animals but what if i continue my-self with that same person just online, will it going to cost me? need some help as i did a bit too much or just fine. And never ever felt this much of synchronicity as i just liked a person may be technically but not by heart and feeling little doubt (from other side). I made my-self little open of my heart purpose (inspired) to some opposite gender friends. At one time thought i should divert my-self may be by fear or what! And this is my 1st encounter of friendly wolfs? (may be), so want some of your suggestion please…
Hola empath,
I think you might have to be a bit more specific. Spirit Animals usually manifest themselves within dreams or “day dreams” (altered states of consciousness that allow space for any spirit animal or unconscious projection of your part to manifest itself).
Manifestation through movies is something I haven’t heard of before. You also mention some love problem but I’m not sure how it interconnects with your spirit animal. Let me know as much as possible to provide you with the best advice I can :)
Wolf is my Spirit Animal. :) Though I haven’t seen one in person. I am fascinated by their features! Now that I know what my Spirit Animal is I’ll pay attention to its messages especially now that I’m needing guidance.
Maybe that is what drew you to our site? Wolves are beautiful animals who seem very domestic as we associate them with household pets but at the same time they had that majestic raw wildness in their eyes, an elegance whereever they carry themselves, almost as with dignity. The beauty of animals is that they never are tricked by their minds into doubting their self worth, but that’s another article and another time.
I am happy you found your spirit animal :), let me know what guidance you may need as I’m always interested in sharing advise and learning more about our readers!
Wow! I now don’t feel so afraid to dream of them (wild animals…possibly wolfs) anymore! Thank you so much for sharing this! I figured it was a negative thing for sure to have that feeling of being hounded by a wild wolf or some mysterious animal but maybe in reality it is trying to explain that I am just searching for something, etc. I really do believe that I will find my Totem or symbol someday. I think this article will help me that much more on my path to accepting the dark with the light and allowing myself to be one with it all, knowing I have the ability to shape my destiny.
Hello James,
The dark is a complimentary force to the light, light needs a background to provide a contrast for its existence, so without darkness, light isn’t possible. Darkness is infinite, for it exists even where light doesn’t reach.
Sometimes, when animals present themselves in our dreams and we feel fear from them, it’s a subconscious interpretation of our fear of change, of guidance away from our misery…though however unhappy, it is a safe unhappiness that we know and change feels alien and scary.
