Self-observation seems pretty basic and even a little mediocre or like some pedestrian psychological technique on the surface.
But in my many years of exploring and walking the inner path, I’ve found that self-observation is THE most crucial practice, skill, and undertaking EVER. Full stop. Period. Fini!
At the time of writing, this might not be common knowledge, but there are actually two levels to self-observation โ the latter being largely unknown to most people.
Spiritual Wanderer Course:
โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ "I started the Spiritual Wanderers Course a short while ago and for the first time in twelve years I have started to experience love, acceptance and compassion for myself and within myself. Thank you so much." โ Vivienne S.
Iโm going to show you how to practice both types of self-observation in this guide so that you come to the irrevocable conclusion that many through the ages have discovered there is ultimately no โyouโ or separate self; there is only life living itself!
(I know this may sound odd, but it’s at the crux of most spiritual and religious paths; it’s just put in different ways: the kingdom of heaven, Self-realization, moksha, anatta, oneness, etc.).
Firstly, letโs get the basic definition out of the way:
Table of contents
What is Self-Observation?
Self-observation is the practice of witnessing oneโs thoughts, feelings, beliefs, habits, and behaviors and watching how they impact oneโs life.
On a deeper level, self-observation is about observing the nature of the self, also known as the ego or personal identity, to search for where, when, and how it arises and whether it truly exists outside of thought.
Self-observation can be passive or active and is often experienced through practices such as meditation, psychotherapy, and journaling.
Level 1 โ How to Practice Self-Observation
In the first level, self-observation is purely a self-help practice to gain more psychological self-awareness.
Shadow & Light Membership:
โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ "Receiving these messages is a beacon of light and hope for me in currently very challenging times. The words of wisdom speak right to my soul, guiding and encouraging me further on my path. I highly recommend Shadow & Light to everyone who seeks to develop and cultivate a relationship with the Inner Self." โ Karin
The benefits of practicing self-observation at this level are many: more inner awareness, the ability to make wiser decisions, understanding of how oneโs mind operates, the ability to find and resolve negative core beliefs and core wounds, access to deeper mental/emotional healing, enhanced clarity, more self-compassion, improved relationships, and so on.
Here are two common ways to practice self-observation through both meditation and journaling:
Self-Observation Meditation
- Finding a quiet place and closing your eyes (or leaving them slightly open), notice your breath wherever it presents most strongly in your body. Feel your connection to the earth beneath your feet, legs, or posterior.
- Turn your attention onto what goes through your mind. What thoughts, feelings, memories, and so forth pop into awareness?
- Simply note the inner phenomena without changing, interacting with, or trying to get rid of them. Just let it be there, exactly as it is, without judgment. Just observe whatever goes on within.
- Keep observing whatever comes up, and if you get lost in the stream of thoughts, just notice that when possible and return to observing your inner world.
- Thatโs it!
Self-Observation Journaling
Here are some self-observation prompts you can use in your journal:
- What am I feeling right now?
- What am I thinking right now?
- What belief is behind this feeling or thought?
- When did that feeling/desire/thought/habit arise within me?
- If I was to describe my inner landscape right now, what would it look or feel like?
- If I was in any inner season, would I be in summer, autumn, winter, or spring?
- What cognitive distortions have I been experiencing recently?
- What inner archetypes or parts of me are active right now?
Choose one or two questions and go for it!
You can also find a bigger list of 100+ prompts in my journaling ideas article.
Level 2 โ How to Practice Self-Observation (i.e., Observe the โSelfโ)
Self-observation is the first step of inner unfolding.
โ Amit Ray
(Please note: if youโre mentally or emotionally unstable, itโs best to stick to level 1 self-observation, as level 2 may feel destabilizing. Proceed only if youโre fairly internally balanced.)
The desire to find freedom from suffering, inner peace, and truth is at the core of many spiritual and religious traditions. The simple practice of observing the self (aka., self-observation) and trying to find whether it actually exists or not is deeply powerfulย and paradigm-shifting, but in a very simple way.
As a practice that is often dramatized and mystified, self-observation, as described in the book Gateless Gatecrashers, is actually quite basic, direct, and down-to-earth.
Those who persist with self-observation often experience a subtle shift in consciousness, realizing from a place of direct experience that there actually is no solid โmeโ โ it is, instead, seen to be a thought and unquestioned core belief that weโve been conditioned to adopt automatically since childhood.
And itโs at the root of our suffering.
Would you like to save this?
Your information will never be shared.
In the words of Ilona Ciunaite and Elena Nezhinsky in their book Gateless Gatecrashers,
There is a simple, obvious truth: there is no such entity as โmeโ. There is no self at all, as in zero. There is only life flowing freely as one reality. Life just is. It is so simple that we miss it. We donโt stop to look at whatโs always happening. Because of this omission, each person in this world is born into a prison, and spends their entire life feeding, protecting and trying to build and redeem something that was never there to begin with. This is the engine of all human chaos. Seeing through this illusion takes secondsโif youโre honest, and you know where to look.
Although I donโt share the same degree of realization as Ilona and Elena do at this moment, here are some pointers that Iโve found to be helpful:
Self-Observation Pointers
- Where do thoughts come from? Do you control them? (And if you think you do, think of a fruit, or a country, or an alphabetical letter โ do it! โ then ask the question again. Do you actually control thoughts?)
- Where do feelings come from? Do you control them?
- Where do sounds come from? Do you control them?
- Where do sensations come from? Do you control them?
- Does the wind decide when to blow? Does a bird decide when to chirp? Does a tree decide when to move? Is there any ownership there?
- Gaze at something in your room. Be aware of the thought label associated with it (e.g., โwall,โ โchairโ). Then drop the thought label and look directly, without a mental story or label, with your senses. Notice the difference between seeing through a thought story and seeing through direct experience.
- Look inside for your sense of inner โme,โ where is it? Can you find it?
- When there are no thoughts about โyou,โ where are you?ย
- Can โyouโ exist outside of a thought?
You can find more pointers in Gateless Gatecrashers and the book Liberation Unleashed: A Guide to Breaking Free from the Illusion of a Separate Self by Ilona Ciunaite.

As weโve seen, there are two different levels of self-observation. Regardless of where you find yourself, observing your inner world is not just an important but a crucial element of living a full and awakened life. And ultimately, we realize through self-observation that life is just living itself without any ownership.
As yoga master and teacher Swami Kripalu once said,
The highest spiritual practice is self-observation without judgment.
Indeed, self-observation is perhaps the most vital tool in our spiritual, emotional, and psychological toolkit, for without it, we canโt perceive the truth directly from our own experience.
Iโm curious about your experience with some of the questions and pointers in this guide. What came up for you? Iโd love to hear your comments below.

And thank you so much for introducing the site “Liberation Unleashed”. Went there, thought “gosh this is what I’ve been looking for” and read…. and will go on reading and answering the questions for “me”.
Yes, please do. I look forward to hearing what “you” find. ;)
Thank you once again Luna and Sol for being able to express all these things that are very hard to put in words. You two do such a great and important job and have helped me so much and you still do.
Yeah I know there’s no me or I and have experienced it all but cannot keep it in everyday life, at work, with people around me. Very often the strain of my chores is so hard for weeks and months on end, and the ‘no-me-experiences’ simply get lost as I don’t find the to just sit down and stare at something until it dissolves and becomes one with ‘me’, or rather I dissolve and become one with everything around me, though this is a blissfull experience and a necessity.
I still struggle how to integrate this in my ‘normal’ life, because if I don’t, I become ill. Only then am I able to ‘reset’ and start remembering these practices. Seems it’s you either lead a ‘normal’ life or dedicate yourself to spiritual practises and lead a secluded life. Both together just doesn’t seem possible.
I disagree, although I know what you mean because I experience the struggle at all. For some, dedicating themselves purely to a life of “retreat into the mountains” might be suitable, but I don’t think it’s realistic or accessible to most people. I recommend checking out the book “After the Ecstasy, the Laundry” by Jack Kornfield which can help you explore more the topic of integration. It’s normal for there to be fluctuations, and I think the key is to just accept and go with it, while also keeping our hearts on what’s truly valuable in life. Thank you for your kind words and presence here ๏ปฟ๐๏ปฟ
Thank you so much, I’m gonna get the book you recommended!
๏ปฟ๐๏ปฟ enjoy
This is a pretty good article, though I’d like to mention that if you want to see more meditations on thoughts, google “meditation to observe thoughts,” or “mindfulness of thoughts.” It’s a more advanced type of meditation, where instead of being focused on something concrete in the outer world, like your breath or a candle, you focus on something internal in your mind. This could come in the form of yantras, for example, visual versions of mantras, verbal mantras, or just a free flowing meditation to focus on whatever thoughts and feelings come up in your head. You can google “spiritual symbols,” or “meditation symbols,” for some ideas, if not “affirmations,” or “mantras,” if you prefer, or you could pick a yantra/mantra that is most meaningful emotionally to you. What matters less is what each symbol is seen as from an objective point of view, but how you subjectively respond to a yantra/mantra yourself, so try to look for some online, if possible, and pick out the ones that offer you the best positive emotional response. It can range from traditional Hindu/Buddhist chants, repeating a traditional Christian/Muslim/Jewish prayer, repeating the rosary, or just a modern affirmation, even if you google something like “Affirmations with swear words,” or “Affirmations for badass women.” Just experiment with what works best for you, personally, or perhaps just google “positive quotes,” and any type of quotes that fit with your personality best, hahaha. Though if you’re looking for self-observation in meditation, I suggest Leo Gura’s blog, Actualized. org, not because he’s enlightened (he doesn’t claim to be), but because his free 1 hour+ videos seem to be the ones that seem easiest for beginners to understand. I mean, a normal person can listen to a lot of traditional enlightenment speakers and be like, “WTF am I reading???!!” but with Leo, you kind of get it. I mean, his ideas are not really original. He just listens to those traditional enlightenment speakers, and just makes them easier for people to understand. That’s his job. He’s kind of cocky in his tone (yet he’s self-aware he needs to work on that), but check his site because I only started understanding stuff, when he just copied what others said, and just made it easier for other people to understand. Perhaps it’s not as amazing or stunning as creating original ideas, but passing on information in a way that the wider population can understand is still an important job, hahahaha.
Thanks for your recommendations AnonymousPerson. Personally, I like to keep meditation simple, deep, and direct, which is why the self-observation pointers / meditation I’ve shared I think will be helpful to most people. But of course, there are other options as well for those not drawn to this approach (such as what you’ve shared). Best wishes. :)
I have to say this is such a fantastic read and being almost upon my 44th birthday as well as my third year anniversary of my Awakening to my true self I am now continually asked how I just don’t think. To be able to explain such a thing is beyond the comprehension of many people many many people and I look back now and wonder how do I continue to think for I spent so much time just being that I no longer think all the time lol.
It probably only took me about less than a year to adopt this mode of thinking or should I say not thinking LOL and truly spend time focusing on feeling things with my heart through my heart to where I now speak the words of other people’s thoughts mirror seconds before they say it constantly bringing that whole sense of I was going to say that from a vast majority of people that I’m around.
Even better than that is having accomplished such a feat I have recently met someone who on a synchronistic energy level I can feel things that I’ve never felt before from this individual. For example just today why I was on the phone with her she screamed out in pain while cooking having splashed hot water on her left hand on her middle finger and at the moment she screamed out in pain my middle finger on my left hand became hot and I asked her please don’t tell me it’s your left hand on your middle finger.
She responds yep sure was and was blown away that I had felt it at the moment she did and it still blows my mind as I to this day I’m still astonished at just how connected the both of us are I mean there’s things that I have felt with her that I can’t share publicly lol sorry not sorry and can only say that our intimate life is something out of this world for that intimacy doesn’t have to occur physically lol. It has occurred many times over many miles away.
I’m not sure how many of you remember Bruce Almighty and that moment with Jennifer Aniston and Jim Carrey where he used his godly gifts to pleasure her without even touching her lol. Well I can tell you from first-hand experience that that is a actual possibility once you become that adept at feeling things versus thinking.
I do have to say that LonerWolf and the amazing Luna & Sol have been there from almost the very beginning of my Awakening after my twin flame journey had shown me and taught me all I needed to know and conquer within myself to become who I am today someone who my children have told me they love far more than the dad I used to be.
So I express my unyielding gratitude to these two amazing wonderful loving beautiful spirits for being here and sharing their amazing and wonderful unconditional love for all of us!
I have continued to be forever thankful and grateful for having come across their wonderful guidance which never seems to fail to be virtually on spot with their guidance with either stuff I’m dealing with or those that are around me that are dealing with and seeking help and don’t know where to turn. I have passed on such information to those individuals yet I do not know if they’ve put the effort in to join their wonderful subscription and weekly guidance.
Thank you Luna and Sol for sharing this human experience alongside me and so many others as well as the vast world on this physical plane. The both of you are truly amazing and I hope that one day I can either talk to you in person or even over the phone as there’s not one day that goes by that I don’t shed some tears in other happiness for the both of you because I love you guys greatly to Infinity & BEYOND!
Such a beautiful message, Mikey. Thank you for your heart-felt energy and sincerity.
The extra-sensory like experiences you describe are beyond the scope, point, or intention of this article, but I’m glad you feel such intimacy with the woman you were mentioning. Lots of love and wishing you the best ๏ปฟ๐๏ปฟ
This is interesting! Our minds our constantly running all day it just feels so exhausting to think about that! I can just imagine living daily life without so many distracting thoughts and just be. I just started meditation and itโs amazing to not be thinking of anything in those moments so this is something to definitely practice!
Yes, and what’s more amazing is that none of these thoughts actually “belong” to us or define us, until we believe they do. The same thing with emotions and sensations. Just amazing!
