Regardless of where you are on the spiritual path and what your relationship is like with Christianity, thereโs a pulsating core of mystical Divine Love at the heart of Jesusโ teachings.ย
And this impassioned blaze of Love has been felt by people all over the world in many spiritual and religious traditions โ not just Christianity.
โChrist Consciousnessโ is a term that Iโm sure youโve heard mentioned at least once on your inner wanderings, and itโs a phrase shrouded in mystery.ย

What does Christ Consciousness mean? And how does it relate in a direct and intimate way to us on our spiritual awakening journeys?ย
Firstly, letโs explore a simple working definition, and then go a little more in-depth:
[Note: I’m aware that fundamentalist Christians and anti-religious people alike will likely take issue with this article. If you’re one of these people, you’d be best to leave (or else stay with an open heart) as this article is for the mystics-at-heart. I’m not interested in arguing or “proving who’s right” in the comments. Let’s try to spread love! Thanks and best wishes!]

What is Christ Consciousness?
Christ Consciousness is a mystical term that refers to a spiritually evolved state of being. When we observe the life and message of Jesus Christ, we can see the qualities of love, devotion, courage, and surrender at the center of his teachings and example. The term โChrist Consciousness,โ therefore, refers to the embodiment of these qualities in our lives.
Christ Consciousness โ This isnโt a New Age Concept
The term โChrist Consciousnessโ has and will continue to be used by the new age โ a movement characterized by a watered-down and good-vibes-only approach to spirituality. And thatโs fine, everyone has their own approach to the Divine based on where theyโre at in life.
But the Christ Consciousness Iโm referring to in this article isnโt a warm-and-fuzzy new age concept; itโs a deeper mystical truth that can be felt and experienced in both the light and dark times of life.
The difference here is that Iโm not necessarily encouraging you to pray to Jesus and ask him to protect you or hover over you like a daddy figure โ again, nothing against that if thatโs what you need.
Shadow & Light Membership:

The words of wisdom speak right to my soul, guiding and encouraging me further on my path. I highly recommend Shadow & Light to everyone who seeks to develop and cultivate a relationship with the Inner Self." โ Karin
Instead, the Christ Consciousness Iโm referring to is about meeting the grit and grime of life through the heart of love, devotion, courage, and mystical surrender as Jesus did.ย
Not only can Christ Consciousness be seen as an approach to life, but it can also be seen as a fundamental part โ or even โgoalโ (as inaccurate and mind-centered as that is) โ of the spiritual awakening process itself.
Spiritual Awakening, Christ Consciousness, and What Jesus Symbolizes
Having been raised in a fundamentalist Christian family, Iโm profoundly familiar with the Christian message, at least in its stripped-of-mysticism-and-replaced-with-dogma sense.
But despite the religious trauma Iโve been subjected to, have gone on a journey to heal, and in many ways, continue to experience, thereโs something in the heart of Christianity that’s still vibrantly relevant and inspiring.
Increasingly, the notion of โChrist Consciousnessโ is coming into the mainstream, and I think thatโs beautiful because it points to the hidden depths of Jesusโ message, his importance to humanity, and what he ultimately symbolizes.
So how is Christ Consciousness related to spiritual awakening? Put simply, Christ Consciousness is another word for Self-realization, Oneness, Samadhi, Nirvana, or Spiritual Enlightenment.
BUT, Christ Consciousness is unique in that itโs a very specific, very profound form or โflavorโ of spiritual Oneness.
In the words of mystical scholar Andrew Harvey,
[Jesus] came to exemplify the divinity of every single human being and to give to the human race the outrageous possibility of a direct divine relation with God: a direct gnostic ecstasy which would also be an ecstasy of service and justice.
The sublime paradox of Jesus I want to point out here is that he is both human and divine. As St. Paul the Apostle writes about Jesus:
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.
(Philippians 2:5-11)
Here we can see the reality of Jesus as the son of man and the son of God, symbolic of both his sacred and wild nature.

Symbolism of the Cross & Jesus
Perhaps the most dominant symbol associated with Jesus is the cross on which he was crucified. This is an image with profound significance to Jesusโ message as it represents a union of opposites. Or in the words of Hermes Trismegistus โ a man purported to walk the earth even before the biblical Moses:
As above, so below, as within, so without.
We can see that the vertical line of the cross represents the axiom โas above, so belowโ and the horizontal line meaning โas within, so without.โ
In the Gospel of Thomas, Jesus mirrors these words, saying,
Rather the kingdom is inside of you, and it is outside of you. When you come to know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will realize that you are the children of the Father.
Symbolism of the Vesica Pisces & Jesus
Another image that theologian and author Meggan Watterson comments is โthe shape that surrounds Christ in most images and icons of himโ is the Vesica Pisces.ย
Again, such an iconic Christian symbol is also representative of the union of opposites, or the โhieros gamosโ (sacred marriage) between the heart and mind, male and female, light and dark โ and essentially all duality.ย
These two overlapping circles, once again, express the human and divine paradoxical nature of Jesus, thereby revealing a central mystery of his message: spiritual integration.
Christ Consciousness is, therefore, another word or idea that points to the notion of spiritual integration; of learning to not only use the heart but also the mind. To embrace your flawed humanity and luminous divinity. And of course, to recognize โGodโ as both an immanent and transcendent force.ย
Such a mystically unified state of being has a different quality from other spiritual experiences, and weโll explore why next.
Christ Consciousness vs. Buddha Nature
Iโm sure youโve heard the expression โBuddha Natureโ or โBuddha-Mindโ spoken about before. In fact, itโs far more likely (in my experience) to hear of this Buddhist-sounding phrase than the term โChrist Consciousness.โ
Sometimes, these two terms are used synonymously. And on an absolute level, I can see why such phrases are used interchangeably โ theyโre pointing to the same One truth. But is there a difference?
Yes, I do believe that thereโs a subtle difference between Christ Consciousness and Buddha Nature. Furthermore, in my perspective, understanding the difference between these two ideas can help us understand what we might have glimpsed or experienced on our spiritual awakening journeys.
When we look at the two distinctly unique figures of Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) and Jesus of Nazareth/Yeshua (Jesus Christ), we can immediately see a difference, which Iโll summarize in bullet points below:
Buddha:
- Peace
- Serenity
- Silence
- Stillness
- Concentration
- Meditation
- Symbol: the lotus flower, Dharma wheel, and bodhi tree
Jesus:
- Pain
- Suffering
- Torture
- Pierced heart
- Faith
- Ascension
- Symbol: the cross, lamb, sacred heart, fish
In the above very simplistic, very brief breakdown of Jesus and Buddha, we can see clearly a difference: Buddhaโs a pretty chill dude. But Jesus? Well, it seems like he got the short end of the stick, doesnโt it? Heโs in a whole world of pain and torment in a lot of images that we see of him.

And yet, despite this blatant contrast, both are pointing to something that lies beyond the individual ego self.
In fact, many of their sayings are similar. Take the following quotes for example:
Do to others as you would have them do to you. โ Jesus (Luke 6:31)
Consider others as yourself. โ Buddha (Dhammapada 10:1)
If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also. โ Jesus (Luke 6:29)
If anyone should give you a blow with his hand, with a stick, or with a knife, you should abandon any desires and utter no evil words. โ Buddha (Majjhima Nikaya 21:6)
Everyone who commit sin is a slave to sin. โ Jesus (John 8:34)
People compelled by craving crawl like snared rabbits. โ Buddha (Dhammapada 24:9)
There are a whole bunch of other parallel sayings (see โJesus & Buddha: The Parallel Sayings‘ edited by Marcus Borg for more examples), but the above should suffice to show their similarities.
So then, recognizing both the similarities and differences between both Jesus and Buddha, where does Christ Consciousness differ from Buddha Nature?
In a nutshell, Christ Consciousness speaks about the awakening of the heart and the integration of opposites: the sacred union of spirit and flesh, inner and outer, light and dark โ itโs very non-dualistic and unifying.
Buddha Nature, on the other hand, refers to the awakening of the mind which we can see represented in the iconography of Buddhism and in Buddhist teachings. Instead of integration, Buddha Nature is about transcending desire, ego attachment, and the rediscovery of primordial Consciousness.
As such, we can see that there are at least two types of โadvancedโ or deeper awakening present in the spiritual journey: heart awakening (or Christ Consciousness) and mind awakening (Buddha Nature).
One form of awakening comes through love, devotion, courage, and surrender as exemplified by Jesus. The other form of awakening comes through establishing mental clarity, detachment, and mindfulness, as exemplified by Buddha.
Christ Consciousness is, therefore, the path of heartfulness โ it is a yin or immanent path. Whereas Buddha Nature is the path of mindfulness โ it is yang and is a transcendent path.
Both can work together or independently.
How to Cultivate Christ Consciousness (4 Mystical Practices)
Underneath the dogma, the dry subjective patchwork of historically edited biblical texts, and immense baggage of the Christian church dwells this exquisite mystic known as Jesus.
If youโre drawn to cultivating Christ Consciousness, or at least exploring it for yourself more, here are some practices I recommend:
1. Honor the power of prayer
Iโve written before that prayer is kind of a โblack sheepโ in the (mainstream) spiritual community due to its religious connotations. Yet donโt discount the power of prayer!ย
Sages, mystics, and spiritual practitioners of all shapes and sizes have used prayer through the ages to commune with the Divine. Feel free to totally reinterpret or reenvision prayer so that it meets your heartโs needs and desires โ you donโt need to stick with old, dry forms of this meaningful practice.
The beauty of prayer is that it is a doorway to grace. Grace is that mysterious force that sometimes appears in our lives in moments of struggle or need.ย
In the words of Jesus:
Ask, and it shall be given to you, seek, and ye shall find, knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
ย (Mat 7:7)
Here, quite literally, Jesus is encouraging the practice of prayer, and he himself is recorded to have prayed quite intensely in the New Testament.
So be open to prayer. Pray to connect with Christ Consciousness. Pray for whatever deep needs you have. (And remember, be mindful of what you pray for because more often than not, it will come to you in some form or another!)
For more guidance, see my article on the Power of Prayer!
2. Cultivate heartfulness
If being mindful means approaching life from a mentally clear and present space, being heartful means approaching life from an emotionally clear and present space.ย
Heartfulness (or โKindfulnessโ in the words of my local Buddhist spiritual director Ajahm Brahm), is the practice of healing, opening, and tending to the heart.ย
But how do we cultivate heartfulness and therefore Christ Consciousness, which by its very nature is heart-centered?
Here are some ideas:
- Practice Metta or lovingkindness meditation each day
- Notice any areas of life that tend to fuel your mind with fear, paranoia, or hatred (thereby restricting the heart) such as social media, the news, or certain environments, and reduce or totally remove them
- Keep a gratitude journal or have a little gratitude practice each day where you contemplate all that youโre thankful for
- Be of service to others whether that is through holding space for a friend, helping out a family member, volunteering, or providing the support someone in need requires
- Choose a mantra or affirmation (such as the Heart Sutra or a statement such as โI open my heart to love) and use it during the day as an ongoing form of meditation and centeringย
- If you work with chakra energy centers, focus on your heart chakra
3. Incorporate inner work into your daily life
In the Gospel of Thomas, Jesus is recorded to have said,
If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.
These words perfectly highlight the necessity of inner work which is the practice of shining the light of awareness onto your inner landscape for the purposes of self-exploration, self-understanding, healing, and spiritual transformation.
The three main inner work practices that I have extensively explored, practiced, and written about before are (1) self-love, (2) inner child work, and (3) shadow work.
I always recommend cultivating self-love and a compassionate relationship with yourself first as it sets the ground for the other two forms of inner work (inner child and shadow work), making them much easier.ย
There are many ways to incorporate inner work into your life. Some examples include journaling, dream analysis, pathworking, shamanic journeying, somatic therapies, mirror work, art therapy, and many other practices. Choose what resonates with you!
Iโve co-authored three premium journals to support this inner work which can be purchased from the lonerwolf shop, and they are the:
4. Contemplate the words of Jesus and the Christian Mystics
In his book โResurrecting Jesus,โ Zen spiritual teacher Adyashanti recommends the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Mark as two rich places to contemplate the words of Jesus.
The Gospel of Thomas, in particular, offers a more โkoanโ type of experience in which the entire book is composed of Jesusโ sayings.
There are also many Christian Mystics who can provide a unique doorway into the heart of Christ Consciousness such as St. John of the Cross, Meister Eckhart, Julian of Norwich, Hildegard of Bingen, St. Teresa of รvila, and many, many others.ย
Take your pick!
Then, try and devote a little time each day to contemplate their words or Jesusโ words (or both).
Contemplation means to simply hold in your mind a word, sentence, or image and let it sink into you, without trying to analyze or dissect what it โmight mean.โ Contemplation is an action that takes you deeper into the heart than the mind.
You can learn more about this form of ‘Divine reading’ in our Lectio Divina article.
Christ Consciousness Quotes
In honor of the previous point about contemplation, here are some illuminating quotes from both Jesus and other figures, that point toward Christ Consciousness.
Youโre welcome to take these quotes as a point of meditation or contemplation or to simply enjoy them.
The light of Jesus, the light of the world, is the light of our own awareness.

โ Paramahansa Yogananda
Christ wasnโt a Christian and Buddha wasnโt a Buddhist and Muhammad wasnโt Muslim. These people were having the experience of unity consciousnesses and universal consciousness and they spoke of it in words.

Let us meditate until we perceive the Infinite Christ reigning in our own hearts. Let us learn to love those who love us not; and to forgive those who do ill against us. Let us break all our mental boundaries of color, creed, and nationality, and receive all – even our inanimate and animal brothers – in the endless, all embracing arms of our Christ Consciousness. This will be a true and fitting celebration of the coming of Jesus Christ to this earth.

โ Julian of Norwich
The eye through which I see God is the same eye through which God sees me; my eye and God’s eye are one eye, one seeing, one knowing, one love.
โ Meister Eckhartย
Final Words
Christ Consciousness is a beautiful and multi-layered term that refers to Divine Love, spiritual integration, and the process of heart awakening; a form of Illumination and transformation that happens at deeper levels of spiritual awakening.
Wherever you are on this path and whatever relationship you have with more traditional forms of Christianity, there is a mystical core at the root of every tradition that points to the Oneness underlying all existence.
Christ Consciousness is that unifying force of the sacred Heart that we all have access to if only we are open โ it is an expression of our True Nature.

That’s a quote from Jesus that a teacher says is directed to us, the children of the 21st century. She says that Christ was fully activated DNA – endowed with Siddhi powers that we all can grow because it’s 2000 years later and the flight of the planet is guiding us there. And with all the full-tilt madness going on, it’s best we who are reading us keep on with that slow courageous ascension into multi-dimensional aspects that this race was made for!
Thanks for a great piece, a clarifying piece, a piece rich with detail.
Thanks Kan :)
I love how you have brought Yogananda to this article. I have been reading his two-volume set The Second Coming of Christ and have found it to be very healing from my childhood Catholic upbringing.
This is not about Catholic bashing. It’s just that for me, I found the RC tradition to be too regimented, filled with guilt and shame. I love that you bring to light the mystic part of JC. I feel pulled to read and learn more about the mystical Christ as I have gotten older.
Keep up the great work on the site. It is amazing content.
Highly recommend one of his other books as well for the same reasons โThe Yoga Of Jesus – Understanding the Hidden Teachings of the Gospelsโ.
It brought me peace to my relationship with Jesus after being raised RC as well. The issue isnโt with Christianity itself but with organized religion in general and the abhorrent history of the church.

” The Kingdom of God is inside/within you (and all about you), not in buildings/mansions of wood and stone. (When I am gone) Split a piece of wood and I am there, lift the/a stone and you will find me.”
I love this verse โค๏ธ
I have worked to use the “Golden Rule” in my life since I was young.
I perceive this as the meaning,
“Love God (whatever feeling you have of the Divine) first, foremost, and in all ways. Love your Self as much as God, which is first, foremost, and in all ways. Love others as much as your self, which is as much as God, which is first, foremost, and in all ways.”
To me, this is the essence of yoga (union).
My personal belief about Ieshua was that he was trained by Buddhist yogis during the time of his adolescence which is recorded in the non-canon books of the Bible. Some of these are included in the Nag Hammadi scriptures.
Thank you for your time, and assistance on my own path.

Thank you very much for writing this article Aletheia. It is so very relevant in the age we live in now. We are witnessing the influential tide of secularism in the West. This political, moral, scientific and cultural transition often brings about heavy, hateful and polarizing debates between the religious and non-religious. These debates, on both sides, are centered around ego, power, legacies and control — and have little-to-nothing to do with spiritual connection, or sadly, even the willingness to love others. With Christianity in specific, the religion’s reputation has a heavy cross to bear — maybe rightfully so, given human history. But that’s the -human- part, and it does make me sad that Christ’s more transcendent messages of kindness, humility, faith, forgiveness etc. have been lost.
I enjoy how you have illustrated Christ Consciousness as related to outward-flowing love. I feel Christ’s approach is actually more Yang than Yin. His teaching style was very overt, public, controversial, confrontational. He was always looking outwards rather than inwards, except for the days before crucifixion. That bold, rebellious teaching style was intentional, with the hope to draw as many as possible, and to turn expectations upside-down. He made people question their views, and called out hypocrisy, classism and discrimination for what it was. He was all about ‘talk the talk and walk the walk,’ right til the very end. I feel relating to Christ-consciousness means analyzing how we love one another, examining how honest and true we are with ourselves and with others, identifying our own shortcomings and contradictions, and having the courage to do what we feel is right.
Some favourite quotes :)
โWhy do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brotherโs eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, โLet me take the speck out of your eye,โ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brotherโs eye.”
โEnter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”
โWhatever you want people to do to you, do that to them. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Think about it: even sinners love people who love them. Or again, if you do good only to people who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Sinners do that too. If you lend only to people you expect to get things back from, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners to get paid back. No: love your enemies, do good and lend without expecting any return.”
Thanks for sharing this perspective Jessica. I can definitely see how Jesus’ approach was very yang, and yet with the (com)passion and emphasis on love, I can see yin there too. That is why I regard Jesus as a symbol of integration and wholeness.
I love the quotes you’ve shared, what translation is that from?
F**king awesome! I don’t even know if I can write that but that is the first thing that came to mind. Since getting involved in Christianity 35 years ago I have read, researched, followed “spiritual” leaders, and bounced around churches trying to find the “something more” I knew was there. I have been devouring your site over the last few weeks (information overload, in a good way) and this article exploded in my life like a super nova. All the spiritual awakenings, dark nights of the soul (one lasting 10 years), all the mountain tops and deep valleys, shadow work and inner child work (all of which I had no words for until your site) just connected. What a boost of energy for this old soul. F**king awesome!
F**king awesome indeed, hahaha :-D

I grew up as a Roman Catholic; upon reaching adulthood, I was led to Buddhism. When my dog passed away a few years ago, Jesus (or Yeshua) was the only spiritual being who appeared to me; he stuck out his hand and invited me into his presence. Since then I have studied the Bible, the unpublished books of the Bible (about 80 or so on the internet) and a book that appeared out of Mexico around the turn of the century that is the result of Yeshua’s appearance to a poor Mexican farmer(?) who wrote down what he said. It is called The Third Testament, and it talks exactly about topics that are in this article.
I suggest that anyone who wants to learn more about Yeshua in a non-religious context or a more spiritual context, read it. Since I started reading that book (it is free as a PDF download), my understanding of Yeshua skyrocketed and I feel his presence everywhere I go.
Beautiful, thank you for sharing this recommendation Eileen!
Fantastic article as always Aletheia, many thanks.
In 2014, while on an online spiritual course, a NY PhD Jew put these two books into my hands; “Christ returns, reveals startling truth” and “Love without end, Jesus speaks”. Both are available on Amazon. It took me awhile, but I swallowed them whole. Both are detailed teachings from Christ himself for our modern age conveyed via specially gifted and purified mediums. “Christ returns” is my Bible replacement. It is one of a kind in its spiritual power and reach. Jesus comes alive as a flesh and blood human being, albeit highly evolved. He recounts his life in Palestine and his teachings, mis-interpreted for us as they have been. He takes a very tough stance on traditional Christianity, likewise for Judaism. He says we are all to aspire to be like him and that he is really only the finished product of human evolution and not somehow different to the rest of us. This book underscores his infinite love for humanity, but interestingly also his extraordinary intellect. And so, he does embody both heart and mind in their fullest expression, contrary to the Christian portrayal. This book is mandatory reading for the spiritual aspirant. He highlights the Mother-Father, Yin-Yang nature of the divine. As a glimpse of His power, here is the prayer he has given for use prior to meditation. I memorized it years ago and use it regularly;
“FATHER-MOTHER-LIFE, you are my life, my constant support, my health, my protection, my perfect fulfillment of every need and my highest inspiration. I ask you to reveal the true Reality of Yourself to me. I know it is your WILL that I shall be fully illumined that I may better receive awareness of Your Presence within and around me. I believe and know that this is possible. I believe that you protect and maintain me within perfect LOVE. I know that my eventual purpose is to EXPRESS YOU. As I speak to you, I know that you are perfectly receptive of me, for you are UNIVERSAL LOVING INTELLIGENCE which has so marvelously designed this world and brought it into visible form. I know, that as I ask YOU to speak to me, I am sending out a consciousness searchlight into your Divine Consciousness and as I listen, YOU will be penetrating my human consciousness and coming ever closer to my increasingly receptive mind and heart. I commit myself and my life into your care.”
In response to your last weeks’ letter Aletheia, I shared an inspiration to use a square breath / Venus image visualization for the divine Father-Mother and a simple YES/NO mantra to help clear the consciousness. On further thought, Yes/No are very impersonal for mantra use. My personal mantras for this are;
out-breath hold; “Mother,, thank you” with Venus image at the Earth center.
in-breath; “Bless me with Life” energy transfer from CoE via spine to Heaven.
in-breath hold; “Father,, thank you” with Venus image at the Heaven center.
out-breath; “Bless me with Light” a Light shower to complete the body’s toroidal magnetic field.
I love this prayer and meditation practice you recommend Robert, theyโre quite unique. Working with the breath is something Iโm focusing more on as of late, and doing that in conjunction with a orayer-like mantra excites me. I think Iโll try this! I really appreciate your presence here, thanks for reading. :)
Christ Consciousness as a ‘heartfulness’ path makes complete sense. You even bring in sacred geometry, and non-dualism. This is a powerful article you have written. I am profoundly moved. I’ve been going through a deep awakening for a number of years and Loner Wolf has been a companion for a while. Mysticism was a path that opened to me. I studied science. I have seen the same underlying currents of dogma in science, as I see in religion – it’s all about fear, power and control. Having studied mysticism in major religious traditions, I can see the common eternal truths. Thank you!
Yes, the same dogma in religion I’ve seen in science too, as well as in anti-religious folks (of which I used to be) โ and essentially anyone who has a strong black-and-white or “this is the absolute truth” approach to life.
I’m thankful that our work here has been a companion on your path for a number of years now, what an honor! Many blessings Tony โค
