Emotional Frequency: Why Are Many Old Souls Empaths?

Some of you may have heard of Empaths: people who are known for their highly developed ability to sense the emotions and thoughts of the people around them.

You might have heard all the symptoms of being an Empath; finding public places overwhelming, confusing others emotions with your own and absorbing them like an “emotional sponge“, finding films/images of violence or cruelty unbearable, feeling other people’s physical pains, being a great listener, suffering from fatigue, needing solitude to recharge and even experiencing the emotions of loved ones who are far away.  But most articles fail to answer why this occurs.

And more intriguingly, Empaths account for about 5% of the population, yet are much more predominant within people who identify with being Old Souls or as a Highly Sensitive Person.  How can this be explained?

Spiritual Wanderer Course:

Being a lone wolf and a spiritual wanderer is a sacred calling in life – a unique and alchemical path of awakening. You don’t need to feel lost, alone, or stuck on your journey any more. It’s time to meet your soul’s deep needs for clarity, self-acceptance, and empowerment. Let us show you how …

Understanding Energy Bubbles

Until a few years ago, I had never heard of the word “Empath “.

Growing up, I noticed a strange shift within me whenever I was around other people.  I’m naturally very calm and centered, but in the presence of other people, I can empathize with the emotions they are feeling almost immediately, which can create distress.

When I was younger, I eventually learned that this was something very useful to possess and had been known for centuries by the Incans.  In the Incan way of viewing the world, we believe in a concept known as “Kawsay Pacha“, living energy.  To us, the world of nature is alive and responsive, and the cosmos is a vibrating field of pure energy frequencies.

Incans once believed they were born into a world that was as conscious of them as they were of it, and that everyone could experience the energy of another living being as if it were their own.  These people who could experience the energy of others had a great blessing, as they would find it much easier to cultivate a soulful connection with all living energies in nature and learn to harmonize themselves within their surroundings using “Ayni“, an energetic reciprocity that exists within all living matter.

When two living energies (for example: humans, animals, mountains) first meet, their energy bubbles touch each other, which is known as “Tinkuy“.  Once a person encounters another person’s energy bubble, something we call “Tupay” starts to occur, where the two people begin to experience a collision of contrasts and differences between their energies, creating a confusion.

It’s at this point that the successful “Empath”, differentiates the type of energy of the person, whether it is “Yanantin“; a completely opposing energy, or “Masintin“, an energy similar in frequency.  That is when you apply “Taqe“, an attempt to harmonize these two encountering living forces.

The Quechua word for an Empath is a “Qawaq” which means “one who sees“.  It comes from the verb “Qaway” which means “to see” the living energy.

Old Souls As Empaths

We all experience empathy to some degree.  Empaths, however, struggle to distinguish their own emotions from those of others.

Highly Sensitive People are born with a physical sensitivity, that of a brain that is overly sensitive to stimuli of emotions, thoughts or activity.  In many cases, HSP’s are so sensitive to subtleties within their environments that it allows them to feel the emotional changes within other people as well.  However, not all HSPs are Empaths.

With Old Souls there’s a difference; their sensitivity is not physical in relation to the brain, but is spiritual, or is in relation to their souls.  This doesn’t mean that all Old Souls are Empaths, but it does mean that many can easily become spiritually attuned to the living energy around them.

This spiritual attunement experienced by the Old Soul is enhanced by their “Old” energy that has been reborn many times.  The more an energy comes into consciousness and then returns back to its origins, the thinner the veil of identity between “I” and “That” is, and the more it is purified.

As our individual egos become less defined, our unconscious intuitive receptors are left open to not only experience our own emotions, but the emotional vibrations of those around us.

The closest I can come to scientifically explain this is that somewhere within the frontal lobe of the brain, there is an area responsible for Echopraxia, which not only allows us to involuntary repeat others actions, but when activated in Empaths, can also allow for emotions from the surrounding environment to be involuntarily received and absorbed.  However, there aren’t enough studies conducted to determine any of this conclusively.

Grounding Your Emotional Center

Being an Empath can be a great asset; but only if you learn to center yourself, grounding your emotions within your own being and refraining from shouldering the unhappiness and suffering of the entire “Pachamama“, mother nature.  If you don’t learn how to ground yourself, you’ll live like a slave to your emotions, rather than a master of them.

Once you learn to master these emotions, you will not feel burdened by your empathy, but freed by it.  You’ll have the ability to control when you want to feel other people’s emotions in order to purposefully understand them.  You’ll also learn when to tune them off, allowing you the space and clarity to act or advise accordingly.

But first, how do we do that?

1.  Identify the Origin

The emotions you feel will not always be from other people; they are often your own. It’s easy to think all negative emotions are coming from other people, so in order to get things straight, try to constantly analyze whether there is something that may have caused the negative emotions you’re feeling or not.

Would you like to save this?

We'll email this article to you, so you can come back to it later!

Your information will never be shared.

2.  Apply Mindfulness to Ground Yourself

The emotional energies that you absorb and experience from others are usually processed through your unconscious intuitive receptors.  When you focus your attention with mindfulness on a specific action, it forces your unconscious mind to tune out of those emotional frequencies and focus conscious attention on something else instead.  Examples of grounding exercises include focusing on your breathing rhythm, visualizing a protective shield around you, or focusing on the spot between your eyes where your “third eye” is located.

3.  Seek Solitude and Distance Yourself

After you have grounded yourself using a mindfulness technique, try to leave the area that persons energy bubble might have effected (for instance, leave for a different room or physically distance yourself by a few meters).  This will allow you to see whether it really was that person’s emotional energy that was influencing you or not.  Afterwards, make some solitary time for yourself which will give you the space to centre yourself again.

***

Being a Qawaq, or Empath has proven to be an invaluable skill in my life which allows me to teach and treat other people.  It has helped me to understand what a person wants or needs and what they are afraid or insecure about by attuning myself to their different emotional vibrations.

If I were to share my experiences about being an Empath, highly sensitive ect. I would be here for a long time. I find it relieving, informative to be able to learn and grow on my spiritual path. Thank you, so much Mateo and A. Luna for living in your purposes.

    Hi Mateo,
First let me compliment you on your writing. It generally resonates with me! Thanks for doing that! Appreciate you and Aletheia!

Your article makes perfect sense, and I have wondered these very thoughts myself recently. For my entire life I have been different and often times I got dragged around by emotions, both mine and other people’s. I attempted to hide myself in a world of science in a weak attempt to explain the world that I experienced. It never worked…

Then later in life, like mid 50s, due to an attempt to understand a collapsing set of life circumstances, I became aware that I was a number of things: an INFJ, a HSP, an empath, extremely spiritual and intuitive, etc… Naturally, these did not fit into the narrative that I had in my head, but with time, research, introspection, healthy living and lots of meditation, I have been able to get a handle on this wonderful gift! I no longer get flooded by a tsunami of emotions or find myself in a dysregulated emotional state. Now, its pretty cool really! Its like having a little mini-superpower! But you are correct, the most difficult thing was to learn how to tell the difference between what were my emotions and what were someone else’s. Now my only regret is that I didn’t figure it out sooner 😀

I have encountered this type of thing my whole life. I could always kind of gauge the “vibe” (for lack of a better word) in a room or with a group of people. I’ve also sensed that I’m able to influence a room via my “aura” or the vibrations I’m giving out wether that’s positive or negative. It can be very frightening. I don’t think I’m an old soul, though. I feel as if I’m an ANCIENT soul. If I think about it hard enough I can put myself into an iron age round house or a foxhole during world war 2. I can feel the cold of a Norwegian fjord, but I can’t put myself in the tropics. I don’t believe in reincarnation but I wonder about these things. I’ve also found that I’m much more at ease when I’m facing north rather than south. I don’t know if that’s a thing, but it’s a very strong sense within me. I wish i had someone to chat with about all this. Nobody i know seems to care. They don’t want to take the time to understand. It is very lonely, even in a crowded room. Anyway, thanks for listening.

I feel you. I think many of the souls I’ve grown up around and amidst are very young. Making me feel rather ancient, though I don’t know how far back I could have lived.. I LOVE tropical everything! The place I am happiest in the entire world is at the beach in the water! And yet I live nowhere near that sort of area. It makes me really sad and lonely.
Im also an HSP and an empath AND a psychic and I can also talk and communicate with spirits.
Nobody else around FEELS the same way I do, if you know what I mean.. feels life, feels others, feels themselves truly and deeply.
I can influence a room with my energy too, it’s especially funny when I’m so angry I can’t help it. Everyone reacts as though someone just stuck a pin in their butts! well, really they act on whatever emotion was bugging them deep down they’ve repressed, or maybe it’s all me ?
But when I’m happy and feeling great is when I truly have the greatest time! I LOVE to make people feel happier and cheerier than they were! Even when I can’t feel them feeling cheerier (I’ve been working on setting up boundaries so that I don’t have to feel everything all the time, I couldn’t even function in public for a time), it’s just knowing that they’ll have a wonderful day after that that makes me happy for them:) that thought is cheering me up now too
I feel like if I had to guess I was alive in the medieval times ? And the renaissance for sure, I just love all the paintings, how beautifully descriptive they are, and a lot of the artists I feel like I understand at a heart and soul level. Could be simply that I’m psychic and all that, but maybe not ?
Sometimes we never know for sure, but that’s okay:)
Maybe my best life was in Australia living in the beach surfing all day I’d love that in this life too!

I have learn the name of a empath I am. Heyoka and I have experienced emotions that are a frequency of their expressions. Over the phone or connections of people with text. I hear their voice as I read it. I am using the valve method, so not to absorb peoples energy. It doesn’t stress me , it is just good to control it. It is a gift and I embrace it.

I’m sorry to say Rock, I’m far from awakened, but I appreciate your interest in our work. I feel we’re all on a journey of awakening, but I’m still skeptical of the ‘awakened’ business.

So, i not only feel, and know, as i meditate and learn the frequencies of the cosmos, i find i become very sensitive to sound. Specifically, words spoken with emotion. I “feel” the words . My question is, listening to these frequencies (i always hear them when my mind and body are calm (regardless of what i’m doing), i occassionally hear spikes in them. And i notice when i do, there is a corresponding “creak” in the room. A furniture, an appliance, a jug, something. Almost like an invisible wave passes through the house, and things creak or shudder in its wake. Do you know what this is?

You are spot on. Everything that is, is alive with energy. Emotional energy is especially powerful, and just as sometimes we build up static electricity and discharge it into something else feeling a shock, so too do emotional energies get discharged into the local area, causing such a noise. I once made the mistake of telling the universe one pop for yes and two for no, and now am constantly followed by such noises. :)

I feel words too, I kind of feel the frequency of like everything around me all the time. I don’t think I’ve ever not been able to. Sometimes it gets to be all a blur, sometimes crystals help me to stay centred, if I let it go for too long I get physically sick…
      Sorry I digress.
Basically it’s the frequency of the energy that thing is making – the creak of the door is a combination of the door itself (all the working parts working together) and the person or the wind moving the door. You’re hearing everything at once which makes it FEEL the way it does to you :)
      The feel of the sound:)
