Emotional Frequency: Why Are Many Old Souls Empaths?

Some of you may have heard of Empaths: people who are known for their highly developed ability to sense the emotions and thoughts of the people around them.

You might have heard all the symptoms of being an Empath; finding public places overwhelming, confusing others emotions with your own and absorbing them like an “emotional sponge“, finding films/images of violence or cruelty unbearable, feeling other people’s physical pains, being a great listener, suffering from fatigue, needing solitude to recharge and even experiencing the emotions of loved ones who are far away.ย ย But most articles fail to answer why this occurs.

And more intriguingly, Empaths account for about 5% of the population, yet are much more predominant within people who identify with beingย Old Souls or as a Highly Sensitive Person.ย  How can this be explained?

Spiritual Wanderer Course:

Being a lone wolf and a spiritual wanderer is a sacred calling in life โ€“ a unique and alchemical path of awakening. You donโ€™t need to feel lost, alone, or stuck on your journey any more. Itโ€™s time to meet your soulโ€™s deep needs for clarity, self-acceptance, and empowerment. Let us show you how โ€ฆ

Understanding Energy Bubbles

Until a few years ago, I had never heard of the word “Empathย “.

Growing up, I noticed a strange shift within me whenever I was around other people. ย I’m naturally very calm and centered, but in the presence of other people, I can empathize with the emotions they are feeling almost immediately, which can create distress.

When I was younger, I eventually learned that this was something very useful to possess and had been known for centuries by the Incans. ย In the Incan way of viewing the world, we believe in a concept known as “Kawsay Pacha“, living energy. ย To us, the world of nature is alive and responsive, and the cosmos is a vibrating field of pure energy frequencies.

Incansย onceย believed they were born into a world that was as conscious of them as they were of it, and that everyone couldย experience the energy of another living being as if it were theirย own. ย These people who could experience the energy of others had a great blessing, as they would find it much easier to cultivate a soulful connection with all living energies in nature and learn to harmonize themselves within their surroundings using “Ayni“, an energetic reciprocity that exists within all living matter.

When two living energies (for example: humans, animals, mountains) first meet, their energy bubbles touch each other, which is known as “Tinkuy“. ย Once a personย encounters another person’s energy bubble, something we call “Tupay” starts to occur, where the two people begin to experience a collision of contrasts and differences between theirย energies, creating a confusion.

It’s at this point that the successful “Empath”, differentiates the type of energy of the person, whether it is “Yanantin“; a completely opposing energy, or “Masintin“, an energy similar in frequency. ย That is when you apply “Taqe“, an attempt to harmonize these two encountering living forces.

The Quechua word for an Empath is a “Qawaq” which means “one who sees“. ย It comes from the verb “Qaway” which means “to see” the living energy.

Old Souls As Empaths

We all experience empathy to some degree. ย Empaths, however, struggle to distinguish their own emotions from those of others.

Highly Sensitive People are born with a physical sensitivity, that of a brain that is overly sensitive to stimuli of emotions, thoughts or activity. ย In many cases, HSP’s are so sensitive to subtleties within their environments that it allows them to feel the emotional changes within other people as well. ย However, not all HSPs are Empaths.

With Old Souls there’s a difference; their sensitivity is not physical in relation to the brain, but is spiritual, or is in relation to their souls. ย This doesn’t mean that all Old Souls are Empaths, but it does mean that many can easily become spiritually attuned to the living energy around them.

This spiritual attunement experienced by the Old Soul is enhanced by their “Old” energy that has been reborn many times. ย The more an energy comes into consciousness and then returns back to its origins, the thinner the veil of identity between “I” and “That” is, and the more it is purified.

As our individual egos become less defined, our unconscious intuitive receptors are left open to not only experience ourย own emotions, but the emotional vibrations of those around us.

The closest I can come to scientifically explain this is that somewhere within the frontal lobe of the brain, there is an area responsible forย Echopraxia, which not only allows us to involuntary repeat others actions, but when activated in Empaths, can also allow for emotions from the surrounding environment to be involuntarily received andย absorbed. ย However, there aren’t enough studies conducted to determine any of this conclusively.

Grounding Your Emotional Center

Being an Empath can be a great asset; but only if you learn to center yourself, grounding your emotions within your own being and refraining from shouldering the unhappiness and suffering of the entire “Pachamama“, mother nature. ย If you don’t learn how to ground yourself, you’ll live like a slave toย your emotions, rather than a master of them.

Once you learn to master these emotions, you will not feel burdened by your empathy, but freed by it. ย You’ll have the ability to control when you want to feel other people’s emotions in order to purposefully understand them. ย You’ll also learn when to tune them off, allowing you the space and clarity to act or advise accordingly.

But first, how do we do that?

1. ย Identify the Origin

The emotions you feel will not always be from other people; they are often your own. It’s easy to think all negative emotions are coming from other people, so in order to get things straight, try to constantly analyze whether there is something that may have caused the negative emotions you’re feeling or not.

Would you like to save this?

We'll email this article to you, so you can come back to it later!

Your information will never be shared.

2. ย Apply Mindfulness to Ground Yourself

The emotional energies that you absorb and experience from others are usually processed through your unconscious intuitive receptors. ย When you focus your attention with mindfulness on a specific action,ย it forces your unconscious mind to tune out of those emotional frequencies and focus conscious attention on something else instead. ย Examples of grounding exercises include focusing on your breathing rhythm, visualizing a protective shield around you, or focusing on the spot between your eyes where your “third eye” is located.

3. ย Seek Solitude and Distance Yourself

After you have grounded yourself using a mindfulness technique, try to leave the area that persons energy bubble might have effected (for instance, leave for a different room or physically distance yourself by a few meters). ย This will allow you to see whether it really was that person’s emotional energy that was influencing you or not. ย Afterwards, make some solitary time for yourself which will give you the space to centre yourself again.

***

Being a Qawaq,ย orย Empath has proven to be an invaluable skill in my life which allows me to teach and treat other people. ย It has helped me toย understand what a person wants or needs and what they are afraid or insecure about by attuning myself to their different emotional vibrations.

So now I’d love to know: what are your experiences as an Old Soul with the gift of being an Empath? ย Please share with me below!

Ah,,,,,, I know what you are talking about I think. Just the other day I was wondering why we bond with some people quiet naturally and with others it is just the opposite. Something like say all H2O moluclues come together to become water. Only theoritically this thought occured to me. Maybe I am childish, but is it what you are talking about, partly at least? Empaths may be catalysts, scientifically, am I right?

      Hola Nalini,

Our thoughts, our emotions, our energy; it all vibrates at different speeds and intensities which allow us to bond with some people more easily than others. You’ve understood it correctly; depending on your Soulful Energy (check our articles) you will attract certain types of people into your life.

In that way, empaths can be catalysts IF they themselves have learned to master their own energy bubbles.

This is a great article. Its so encouraging to read someone writing about this stuff. I feel to blessed to have developed quite an understanding of this myself through my own experience.
I would say you’re spot on with a lot of it. Its an often confusing and misunderstood trait. I like that you offered people tools to work with it. The one thing I personally don’t agree with is creating protective energy bubbles around yourself as a matter of course (perhaps you weren;t suggesting that anyway?), apart from in very occassional circumstances. It feels like it sometimes creates more fear and separation. but I understand there may be the occassion it mgiht be appropriate.
I think being grounded and ’embodied’ is an excellent tool.

anyway, thanks for a great article. and it was really interesting reading the inidgenous approach.

      Hola Bred,

These experiences that are associated more with mysticism than with any modern day ‘scientific’ approach have been felt by many people since the dawn of time. It is only now that science is beginning to prove what many of us have felt all along.

I know of the power there is in hearing other people have experienced what you have as well to be able to accept it and investigate it further instead of doubting yourself as we’ve all been taught when it comes to abnormal qualities that ‘normal’ people don’t have. That’s what LonerWolf is :).

When I write about energy bubbles I’m referring to the capacity of ‘grounding’ yourself as you’ve mentioned. Unless we are capable of consciously controlling our energy fields around us so that others energies don’t push us around, we will always feel ‘attacked’ by others energies.

It’s not so much a matter of creating a separation but of defining your energy strongly enough so that others can’t push you around. Think of the analogy of a tree who has developed strong branches and big roots so that the winds around him can’t shake him up. He can be in proximity to others trees around him, the other trees branches can even entwine his own.

But if both trees were skinny and weak branched (or in our case, not grounded), then the first wind that comes would have the trees crashing into each other, hitting each other and them would be powerless to stop it. Emotions and energies are like that wind, so that is why it’s important to define our energy intensely (which I’ve also written about, Soulful Intensity).

Thank you for sharing your experiences with us, I appreciate a lot to hear our readers comments and concerns so we can both contribute to the widening and spreading of knowledge :)

      Hola Maridian,

Being an empath without learning to ground yourself or control the boundaries of your energy bubble is difficult.

I suggest you follow some of the suggestions I offered Nikki in a comment below as they have worked successful for many of my students. Alternatively, find someone who can assist you and guide you through some techniques that will help you with this in your area.

All the best, feel free to contact me if you need any specific advice.

      Hi Maridian
I really get what you’re saying. Do you have anyway to get some space in nature, connect with the land, be alone? might be a good place to start. The more you get to know yourself the better.
and as Mateo mentioned being grounded is likely going to help. It helps reading articles like this too, becasue you can start to see the gift in it as well.

I’ve been through several agoraphobic stints, refusing to leave my house for as much a months at a time. I found experiencing and expressing as much art as possible in solitude to be a great way to rid yourself of negative energy and focus on your own so you can function as a person. Singing, dancing, playing instruments, rapping, writing, shadow boxing, yoga, along with incenses, music, comic books, and cooking. These things are pure positive energy that are entirely your own. Get out your head, express your emotions and you’ll find them.

Hi Maridian, I am eighteen, as well, and I relate to the same issues that you seem to have. The greatest discovery for me is finding other souls who value simplicity, the same way that I do. I believe that a lot of individuals wish to be in the mix of life’s chaos and events, whereas another population of people are satisfied with taking in life and observing, rather than being in the mix, like I mentioned. I connect best and find the most overwhelming happiness around people who are always observing the beauty of the world and everything pure that surrounds them. On the other hand, when I am surrounded by those who are consumed with negativity and the material that influences them, I am drained and feel very depressed.

I truly believe if you can find individuals that observe and appreciate and care less about materialism, you will be more fulfilled than you think. Of course, the obvious issue is that it is difficult to find positive people. Surprisingly, I admire my older friends who have overcome something major, such as alcoholism, and have had a spiritual revelation about their life’s meaning. Additionally, children seem to have the brightest thoughts and souls that I have found and I find great energy around their purity and appreciation for the little things in life.

It seems so obvious to surround yourself with positive souls and/or simple thinking, but if you have not tried so already, I genuinely urge you to do so. Good luck! :)

      Hola Nikki,

I’m happy to hear you found the article so useful.

Apart from the obvious techniques of meditation, focused awareness, yoga etc.. as grounding tools, other more obscure techniques to cope as an empath are these that I share with some students:

      – Visualizations: Such as energy bubbles that protect you from the energies of others actual aid immensely in expanding your own personal energy so as to protect you from the push and pull of other peoples over bearing or outbalanced energies.

      – Khuyas (or stones): Some people find that crystals and gemstones aid in clearing negative energy and maintaining balance. Choose yours by trying several different stones, and by paying attention to how each feels. My own is a piece of Moldavite.

      – Smudging: It is not only a Native America practice but many other cultures were well aware of the benefits of burning Sage as a way for the smoke to brake up the heavy energy vibrations around you.

      – Chakras (or ‘chunpis’ as we call our energy belts): Regular cleaning of the chakras will keep your energy field free of negative or heavy energy. Re-balancing them will create an energy alignment.

These suggestions will hopefully aid you in your quest. Let me know if there’s anything else I can share with you.

Mateo — I absolutely loved reading your bio and learning about your life story. How amazing it must’ve been to grow up surrounded by such an influx of spirituality!

To answer your question: as an empath [and INFJ / Reflector], I definitely have to agree with you when you say you feel too deep, and too much. Some of my earliest memories are of severe melancholy — the world always seemed like such the most painful yet most utterly beautiful place.

This quote explains it best: โ€œCompassion hurts. When you feel connected to everything, you also feel responsible for everything. And you cannot turn away. Your destiny is bound with the destinies of others. You must either learn to carry the Universe or be crushed by it. You must grow strong enough to love the world, yet empty enough to sit down at the same table with its worst horrors.โ€ – Andrew Boyd

I was the type of child that mourned the death of an insect, or was excluded on the playground. I liked ET / ghost shows and I dreamed of ancient civilizations & a simpler way of life. While my young mind was being demented by society, a great turmoil arose in me. And, little did I know, I was soaking up the emotions of everyone around me and identifying with them.

After many years of lessons, synchronicities, and even a few traumatic incidents, I slowly brought mindfulness into my life and became an observer of my thoughts [and supposed “emotions.”] In realizing what the ego is and how it distorts reality, I began to let many things go. “Radical de-conditioning,” if you will. Old thoughtforms, beliefs, guilt, expectations, “truths”. Even a lot of material possessions. I learned how to contemplate the vast beauty of the cosmos while keeping a mindful eye here in the present moment.

I’ve also continued to develop my psychic abilities and more importrantly, I’ve discovered the joy of Reiki. I’ve found that I’m naturally inclined to facilitate healing as many miraculous things have occurred on my Reiki journey — even as an outright beginner. In fact, now that I look back on my life, I believe I’ve been a healer all along. I think I’m inclined to suffer because I take away the pain of others. And I have experienced depression because I didn’t know how to release / transmute that pain. Now that I know this cycle, everything is finally flowing freely. :) As the moon renews herself with each cycle, we renew ourselves from moment to moment.

Lately I’ve been channeling these feelings into artwork, and I’ve been fortunate enough to share my art with millions via social media. [ etsy.com/shop/annelaclairartist ]

But first and foremost, I’m looking for opportunities to learn more from other empaths, spiritual seekers, shamans, and the like.

Mateo — my heart yearns to help heal the planet at this time & to connect with indigenous peoples from all over the world. I feel past-life connections to so many places, particularly in Egypt, Lemuria, Native America, and South America. I’m not sure where to go or what to do but I feel I’m being called to participate in ceremony. I’m interested to hear more about your journey, and if you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear what you have to say. :)

      Hola Anne,

I do feel blessed I was presented with the opportunity of immense friction through my youth, something that allowed my spark to ignite. Thank you for taking the time to read it.

I remember finding that Andrew Boyd quote a few years ago and felt it was truly the essence of the plight many empaths and old souls must battle through their lives. To feel the burden of the world and not know how to detach yourself from it is one of the greatest pitfalls. Being an empath can be a gift or a curse if you don’t have the wisdom to cope with it.

Your not alone in those experiences, we’ve have so many people share with us the struggle that is being a child and being burdened with this perception of the world. It can be one of the most confusing times for a child; isolating and frightening to experience absorbing others emotions or an inability to comprehend the behavior of your peers.

I was so saddened when I came from my country and saw how Western society dealt with these children who were experiencing these energies. They were drugged, numbed and told to stop being silly, or shy and forced to become pro-active “go-get’em” like their school mates. As a child I felt so fortunate to find my mentor who provided answers and explained to me this was a rare gift, and perfectly normal. That is my motivation behind LonerWolf, to try and bring awareness to those who are going through turmoil trying to understand themselves.

I am overjoyed to hear you’ve progressed so successfully through your spiritual journey of finding yourself. Synchronicity must have drawn you to our website because that’s exactly what Involution is about; the deprogramming and deconditioning of so many aspects of our lives. Many spiritual teachers have encouraged mindfulness, awareness and meditation which is excellent, but often a lot of people get lost or struggle because total presence, complete awareness comes as a result of the end of your spiritual journey. First an immense amount of taking away, of finding your authenticity must occur which is what Involution is about.

Reiki is a great way to balance your energy as are the Chakras and also the energy belt methods we use in our Shamanic healing. Working with energy however is not something every is willing to do, or blessed with the capacity like you :), so in this article I’ve limited myself to the exercises and methods everyone can benefit from and apply.

I have seen some of your Etsy work and must congratulate you for your talents, they are extremely life like. Maybe someday we can do a collaboration for some of our articles.

We hold shamanic ceremonies here every few moons but I feel we might be slightly to distant from you. Feel free to ask Luna or I anything you like, or are interested in and we’ll do our best to share with you the knowledge we’ve cultivated and experienced. You can find us on Facebook.

PS — Do you have any articles relating to ‘ego death’? Or perhaps, anything to say about it? I feel like awakening and letting go of the ego seems to be a somewhat gradual process for most people but my experience, however, was gradual for many years but then culminated through a traumatic, psychedelic crisis. Although it was ultimately for the best in my soul development, I still have moments where I’m overcome with anxiety and confusion about my existence since my eyes were opened so quickly.

Just let me know when you can, I’m sure you’re busy!

        Thanks,
        Anne

Thank you Anne for all those kind words.

I’ve written in the past about ego’s: https://lonerwolf.com/egocentric-self-esteem/ and https://lonerwolf.com/whole/ touch a bit on the subject as well as https://lonerwolf.com/the-awakening-of-involution/ mentions the initial stages of awakening to that sense of self, and by realizing about its existence we shed light on it and begin its slow death.

Psychedelics are a terrific way to gain a glimpse, a touch into that state of boundlessness, of no separation, when properly guided by someone. It’s one thing to write about it but to actually experience it is an entirely different essence. Try also our article on the shock of awakening to finding yourself as an outsider: https://lonerwolf.com/involution-outsiders/ :).

Hope these help, but if you need something more personal you’re more than welcome to contact me or Luna via facebook or email.

I applaud your commitment to following the advice above and using mindfulness to ground yourself from the push and shove of others peoples energy bubbles.

I look forward to reading some of the scientific studies of neuroscience you have found corraborating if you care to share them.

Thank you for enriching the comments with a new language.

I consider myself to be very empathic, even to the point where I can sense the emotions of actors, and even get the physical sensation of losing gravity, which I feel in my balls :[ , whenever I see someone on tv/movie/video jump or fall from on high. But, that makes me wonder if I am actually sensing it spiritually, or if I’m just recognizing a pattern…

      Hola Kris,

Empaths have to do mostly with emotions, feeling a drop of gravity in your lower body might indicate a mirroring of the persons fear, which is general felt in the gut area, though in males automatic “clenching” can occur.

It’s an usual trait, but great to know about. Thank you for sharing your experience.
