Emotional Frequency: Why Are Many Old Souls Empaths?

Some of you may have heard of Empaths: people who are known for their highly developed ability to sense the emotions and thoughts of the people around them.

You might have heard all the symptoms of being an Empath; finding public places overwhelming, confusing others emotions with your own and absorbing them like an “emotional sponge“, finding films/images of violence or cruelty unbearable, feeling other people’s physical pains, being a great listener, suffering from fatigue, needing solitude to recharge and even experiencing the emotions of loved ones who are far away.ย ย But most articles fail to answer why this occurs.

And more intriguingly, Empaths account for about 5% of the population, yet are much more predominant within people who identify with beingย Old Souls or as a Highly Sensitive Person.ย  How can this be explained?

Spiritual Wanderer Course:

Being a lone wolf and a spiritual wanderer is a sacred calling in life โ€“ a unique and alchemical path of awakening. You donโ€™t need to feel lost, alone, or stuck on your journey any more. Itโ€™s time to meet your soulโ€™s deep needs for clarity, self-acceptance, and empowerment. Let us show you how โ€ฆ

Understanding Energy Bubbles

Until a few years ago, I had never heard of the word “Empathย “.

Growing up, I noticed a strange shift within me whenever I was around other people. ย I’m naturally very calm and centered, but in the presence of other people, I can empathize with the emotions they are feeling almost immediately, which can create distress.

When I was younger, I eventually learned that this was something very useful to possess and had been known for centuries by the Incans. ย In the Incan way of viewing the world, we believe in a concept known as “Kawsay Pacha“, living energy. ย To us, the world of nature is alive and responsive, and the cosmos is a vibrating field of pure energy frequencies.

Incansย onceย believed they were born into a world that was as conscious of them as they were of it, and that everyone couldย experience the energy of another living being as if it were theirย own. ย These people who could experience the energy of others had a great blessing, as they would find it much easier to cultivate a soulful connection with all living energies in nature and learn to harmonize themselves within their surroundings using “Ayni“, an energetic reciprocity that exists within all living matter.

When two living energies (for example: humans, animals, mountains) first meet, their energy bubbles touch each other, which is known as “Tinkuy“. ย Once a personย encounters another person’s energy bubble, something we call “Tupay” starts to occur, where the two people begin to experience a collision of contrasts and differences between theirย energies, creating a confusion.

It’s at this point that the successful “Empath”, differentiates the type of energy of the person, whether it is “Yanantin“; a completely opposing energy, or “Masintin“, an energy similar in frequency. ย That is when you apply “Taqe“, an attempt to harmonize these two encountering living forces.

The Quechua word for an Empath is a “Qawaq” which means “one who sees“. ย It comes from the verb “Qaway” which means “to see” the living energy.

Old Souls As Empaths

We all experience empathy to some degree. ย Empaths, however, struggle to distinguish their own emotions from those of others.

Highly Sensitive People are born with a physical sensitivity, that of a brain that is overly sensitive to stimuli of emotions, thoughts or activity. ย In many cases, HSP’s are so sensitive to subtleties within their environments that it allows them to feel the emotional changes within other people as well. ย However, not all HSPs are Empaths.

With Old Souls there’s a difference; their sensitivity is not physical in relation to the brain, but is spiritual, or is in relation to their souls. ย This doesn’t mean that all Old Souls are Empaths, but it does mean that many can easily become spiritually attuned to the living energy around them.

This spiritual attunement experienced by the Old Soul is enhanced by their “Old” energy that has been reborn many times. ย The more an energy comes into consciousness and then returns back to its origins, the thinner the veil of identity between “I” and “That” is, and the more it is purified.

As our individual egos become less defined, our unconscious intuitive receptors are left open to not only experience ourย own emotions, but the emotional vibrations of those around us.

The closest I can come to scientifically explain this is that somewhere within the frontal lobe of the brain, there is an area responsible forย Echopraxia, which not only allows us to involuntary repeat others actions, but when activated in Empaths, can also allow for emotions from the surrounding environment to be involuntarily received andย absorbed. ย However, there aren’t enough studies conducted to determine any of this conclusively.

Grounding Your Emotional Center

Being an Empath can be a great asset; but only if you learn to center yourself, grounding your emotions within your own being and refraining from shouldering the unhappiness and suffering of the entire “Pachamama“, mother nature. ย If you don’t learn how to ground yourself, you’ll live like a slave toย your emotions, rather than a master of them.

Once you learn to master these emotions, you will not feel burdened by your empathy, but freed by it. ย You’ll have the ability to control when you want to feel other people’s emotions in order to purposefully understand them. ย You’ll also learn when to tune them off, allowing you the space and clarity to act or advise accordingly.

But first, how do we do that?

1. ย Identify the Origin

The emotions you feel will not always be from other people; they are often your own. It’s easy to think all negative emotions are coming from other people, so in order to get things straight, try to constantly analyze whether there is something that may have caused the negative emotions you’re feeling or not.

Would you like to save this?

We'll email this article to you, so you can come back to it later!

Your information will never be shared.

2. ย Apply Mindfulness to Ground Yourself

The emotional energies that you absorb and experience from others are usually processed through your unconscious intuitive receptors. ย When you focus your attention with mindfulness on a specific action,ย it forces your unconscious mind to tune out of those emotional frequencies and focus conscious attention on something else instead. ย Examples of grounding exercises include focusing on your breathing rhythm, visualizing a protective shield around you, or focusing on the spot between your eyes where your “third eye” is located.

3. ย Seek Solitude and Distance Yourself

After you have grounded yourself using a mindfulness technique, try to leave the area that persons energy bubble might have effected (for instance, leave for a different room or physically distance yourself by a few meters). ย This will allow you to see whether it really was that person’s emotional energy that was influencing you or not. ย Afterwards, make some solitary time for yourself which will give you the space to centre yourself again.

***

Being a Qawaq,ย orย Empath has proven to be an invaluable skill in my life which allows me to teach and treat other people. ย It has helped me toย understand what a person wants or needs and what they are afraid or insecure about by attuning myself to their different emotional vibrations.

I can so relate to this Mateo. I have always seen & felt the same things as a child. I lost faith & trust in myself & thought I was crazy. Spent many years shutting myself off from the world with medications to numb out the pain I was experiencing. In 2011, I started going through an Awakening & The realisation of being an Empath! It has been an amazing journey of transformation & self discovery. I have been on a spiritual journey since & gone through many different teachings including Shamanism, Munay-Ki initiations, sweat lodges, energy & sound healing, chakra work, meditation and so on… Life is so beautiful now. I am experiencing ascension symptoms, starting to remember my soul and contact with my higher being! I am in the process of a full Kundalini awakening and it is truly amazing! I am feeling so much joy, love, peace and gratitude for my life journey and to where it has brought me today and I am now ready to share my journey with the rest of the World!

I am pleased with the inordinate amount of time and effort you have spent compiling vast amounts of information here. What a true accomplishment of your efforts.

A few observations have caught my attention that there are little to no references with any astrological signs and genders. Perhaps I have missed or simply overlooked these aspects. I believe that astrological signs hold merit and bearing on Infant to Old Soul’s nature and ritualistic mannerisms albeit to where they are almost habitual. The references made with regards to gender lays simply in your listing of notable names of historical notice. Little to nothing is stated that there are any tendencies of one gender over another within any given soul. I.e. are there more women than men in each of the five listed soul ages or is it more heavily weighted with men?

    Thank you and regards,
    JC

I have always considered myself empathic. It can get to the point where I get mentally drained sometimes. I enjoy my solitude. Recently a psychic told me I’m an old soul which just confirmed my suspicions of it. Now I’m just trying to figure out if I really am an old soul and why do I keep reincarnating. Sometimes I feel like I’m 1000 years old. I’ve also recently just had a spiritual awakening and somehow tapped into other abilities.

As a young person I was very smart beyond my years. I never felt my age. I easily mingled with adults and explored complex ideas of philosophy. I was irritated by the trivial concerns of others and got swept up into deeper meanings of social obligations. My ability to feel grew when I met my partner. He brought me visions of my past lives that we had experienced together and that solidified how different I was. This is my first attempt at sharing it. Reasons for sharing is this does feel like a safe community of like minded people searching for the same thing..support and to belong. He is an older soul than myself. His presence heightened my abilities. I went from being able to travel my mind to what I knew into things I didn’t know and history (my most disliked subject) not only came alive but I could live it. Oddly it was like we shared one conscious mind sometimes. Not in real time but our synced ideas would always reveal themselves. People are draining and I do block them out, or I have learned to keep them at bay, but eventually I have to break it a little, I’ve learned the dangers of being too secretive. I have learned many tricks to avoid topics of religion, beliefs and exposing my different from the norm logic (feeling). I feel naked and exposed when I share what their minds could not accept, unless you find other old souls who can share and enlighten you just as much in return. That is always nice. Thanks for letting me share and I hope you all a beautiful journey.

I resonate with what youโ€™re saying, thank you for sharing *huge hugs*

Alas, The Universe has not granted me yet what you had 5 years ago or more in 2015 when you wrote that. Wow, a special relationship of the soul and extending further beyond *sigh*. I too get tremendously boosted from the inter-compatible companionship you talk about, itโ€™s so nourishing. My best platonic friend died approx 5 years ago, he had a massive iq (big brain intellect, died from something else not from a big brain) but anyway thatโ€™s another lifetime & altogether different to your scenario. Since Iโ€™m writing thus, is going to sound silly but he told me he and a couple of others he knew were โ€œchieftainsโ€ or high priests (or the like) of Atlantis in a previous life, which I laughed at on the inside (respectfully) as completely ridiculous, however that was his calling. Bless him. Iโ€™ve always had friendships with older people, and he felt at ease enough to share something spiritio-personal with me, very private. And here I am sharing it with the world (insert appropriate emoji here)

For me, it is what it is, best to soldier on best can in the interim with whatโ€™ve got to work with. We are ultimately at the mercy of the Universe

I’ve recently discovered that I’m an empath and I’m struggling a little – hard enough growing up as a teenager without people calling you nosey because you can’t shut out their problems. I was told when I was young that I was an old soul and I just don’t feel like a child, I never have, and it singles me out even more. I have no idea about adulthood but being both and a teenager can be lonely.

      Hola Ella,

It is really a lonely feeling; ‘to see too much, and feel too deeply’ is the way I described it when I was younger.

But it also serves as a catalyst, the ultimate teacher, if you learn to channel these gifts. The wisdom to understand the feelings of others is the greater route to soulful wholeness you can find.

      Warmly,

This is a cool article. I’d love to learn more about the Incan idea of an empath. I am an empath, and I actually see energy bubbles…whether they’re the ones the Incas speak of I don’t know, but I would be interested to learn more about it because this is the first time I’ve heard of other people possibly seeing them.

      Hola Nadia,

In the Incan culture it was only a few rare people who could actually see the bubbles, most were able to feel them through their senses.

Though in shamanism it is very common to see the bubbles of energy in others, and fascinating how this can interplay with the concept of ‘auras’ so prevalent in so many different cultures.

          Hola Nadia,

Unfortunately the Inca’s weren’t known to keep many written records. The culture is one of apprenticeship so knowledge is handed down to you by your teacher or mentor (Paqo as they are known).

What I learned about their wisdom was handed down to me as well. It’s sad to think how much of the wisdom they had was lost due to the inquisitions repression and destruction of all their beliefs.

I don’t know of any books that truly capture their teachings (especially as it is one of ritual and manifestation), so your best option would be to travel to Peru and find some of the local tribes that still carry their legacy.

Learn a bit beforehand of what you want to learn about; ‘Karpays’ (the process of energy transmission) is very powerful if it is taught be a ‘Qawaq’ meaning “one who sees”.

And since you mention you can’t see auras, try looking into ‘K’ara’ which is an energy body of sorts (it’s almost like an etheric double of a person).

Let me know if you need any more help,

          Sol

I wish I’ve came across this article sooner.
I was hopping from article to article, originally I was merely searching for the definition of old soul. As a friend of mine repeatedly said I am one.

I’ve always been able to empathize others, since very young age. From time to time, I get into a ‘battle’ with my emotions, at times I hate the fact that I have empathy, ability to feel how others feel, while lack the ability, power to change anything. And sometimes I don’t mind empathy that I have, and perhaps even proud of, sometimes I’m able to just tune it out when I don’t want to deal with other’s issues.

Reading this article, it made me think perhaps what I have, could be more than just empathy, but empath instead. While personally I’m not quite into the idea of ‘spiritual world’ (I have my own theories on what life is / how it works) I have to say it is rather accurate in a sense. And wishing I would’ve come across this piece sooner. As the ability was stronger for me when I was younger, as I grow, not knowing what it is, I relentlessly trying to tune it out. And am afraid that I might’ve lost this ability. I believe abilities, power or whatever name we give it, is like our physical muscles, if you don’t exercise it, it’ll stop working entirely eventually.

      Hola Jay C,

You’re entirely right. These abilities or gifts are often malnourished because we fail to acknowledge them or exercise them.

As children we are all born in tune with many of our senses, we perceive life with much more wonder. Slowly we begin blocking things out from the external world and the internal world by boxing them into ‘concepts’ and therefore perceiving the concept instead of the actual real thing.

An example of this is people who are learning to paint. If you ask them to paint an apple they will draw an apple as what they ‘remember’ it looks like instead of what it actually does. It ends up being a roundish or cartoonish apple drawing as they ‘see’ but they don’t ‘observe’.

One you are aware of this however, there’s the possibility of slowly bringing back awareness into these abilities and even taking them further sometimes.

Thank you for sharing your experience as an empath.

Thank you for reiterating …I come across these comments 5 years later. All good, Iโ€™m a newbie.

Fantastic reference resource LonerWolf, thank you!

So, I hear and get a sense from all commenters responding in, I hear how having a collective conscience (community mind/ voice) is helpful in healing/ therapeutic/ validating/ stabilising/ positive etc

And the next stage? So: have empath abilities, am working on them, acknowledge may never fully master them; irrespective, while itโ€™s great to connect with others (without relevant empath abilities) in need & who can choose to take & do what they want with empath help, but how can oneself/ empathโ€™s actually make use of these abilities to project oneself fiscally from [ abject poverty ] to [ balanced comfortable lifestyle ] – I just find empath abilities are so circumspect unreliable/ wishy-washy

Even empaths of old, none come to mind who sustained comfortable surroundings in enduring happy circumstances. It too, appears they were not necessarily granted any extra physical life because they held empath ability eg Druids, Asian chi masters etc. In a lot of cases, it appears they could not even prevent national calamity (eg Aztecs/ Incas/ Egyptians etc etc)

        Disappointing :-\ โ€โ™‚๏ธ

but while Iโ€™m here again, itโ€™s all a bit like: โ€œ…had Kundalini experience, and??whatโ€™s next…โ€

Not saying that Iโ€™ve had a Kundalini revelation type experience, maybe maybe not who knows, just using that as a euphanism type to try convey what I mean

Not only can you talk meaningfully with the full spectrum of personalities but also ALL age groups too! I think a great way to exemplify your advice on history is whenever we’re having a problem we think is ‘huge’, sit back and ask yourself; “Where are all those people 100 years ago who thought they have ‘massive’ problems? What about their enemies?”

That’s correct. It’s an exercise in perspective when we can look back on the past and realize all the people that existed, all the enemies of these people that they hated so much and spent so much of their life hating, all the problems they thought they had, are not important anymore.

So much of our life is spent unhappy by these trivial matters and is only relative because we worry about the future so much. Another way of doing it is to look back just a couple of years ago in your own life; I bet most of the ‘big problems’ that existed in your life back then are not part of your life anymore, you now have new ones.

Perspective is everything when we search for wisdom; the way we look at problems, the angle we choose to think about ideas and being able to ’empath’ others perspectives is a wonderful gift, it expands our peripheral awareness from our limited subjective tunnel vision perception.

Honestly I don’t know if I’m an empath or not. I have always had what I can only explain as a “psychic” ability that reaches beyond just perception and being able to subconsciously feel others emotions. I’ve always been a high IQ person and just correlated my abilities with my ability to spot patterns. But it even scares me at times with my knowledge of things that I have no formal education in that according to all laws of nature, one would need to have education of such topic to know such facts….. almost like being possessed by a demon. That being said, I’m internally conflicted by this because I’m extremely skeptical to say the least of spirituality, the spirit world, and or things that cannot otherwise be explained by science or physics. This is why my abilities are almost frightening to me. For starters, I’m kind of like a “human/animal whisperer”. If a human or animal has either been traumatized or diagnosed with a mental disorder that renders them “mad”, all I need is 1 minute with them of looking into their eyes, maybe placing a hand on their cheek, and they immediately seem to be cured. As I mentioned before, I also have an inexplicable ability to know things about random stuff that I shouldn’t know at all without some sort of education on the topic. I have always written this off to lucky educated guesses based on my ability to learn things quickly, but it can get to the point where the coincidences seem to be something deeper. I have tried my best to research and tangibilize my abilities through science. Alas, I somehow find myself looking in the area of spirituality. I don’t know what to make of it anymore and could really use some insight.

      Hola Jared,

To be blessed with a gift is something to celebrate, being afraid of it because you can explain it will limit your ability to embrace it fully.

Science can only measure the surface of existence, the material external aspects of reality. It cannot measure the depth, the inside of it. How do you measure love? by the amount of chemicals released in the brain? Can an objective quantity be a substitute for a subjective experience? Can me intellectually telling you that you have a 500000 serotonin count be a substitute for the experience of ecstasy?

Science is useful but should be used only for what it is made for; to measure the external material world. We shouldn’t try to apply it to a world that is outside of its reach which is the internal experiential reality.

If I were to say that your knowledge is from past lives or Precognition would it make a difference? There’s no way I can ‘prove’ it and neither can you disprove it. My advice is to accept, embrace and be thankful for it, there might not be a name or label for that specific gift which can help you understand it but it does not make it any less valuable.

If it of any help, I have heard other people who have explained the same things so you’re not alone in this experience.

There is also another frightening aspect that I forgot to mention. I won’t debate whether spirituality exists with you because I have an open mind and there have been too many frightening things that science cannot explain in my lifetime. The fact that I’m giving credence to you and this message board is proof enough that I have an open mind due to the paranormal experiences that I’ve had the cannot be explained by science. I have noticed another frightening coincidence…. Whenever I have been wronged by someone or something… it seems like there’s something else going on…. for instance the other night when I had horrible luck at a casino and lost a lot of money, when I got home that night our neighbors car burnt to a crsip. It seems like when something u just happens to me, someone who lives in close proximity to me suffers unspeakable cruelty. From all my spiritual research it seems like something else is going on that’s too much of a coincidence to ignore. This is just one example but o can give many more like this. If you want to write it off to the “gods of karma” or something else…. I seem to be cursed by my existence. I have seen a priest who describes me as a fallen angel who demons have waged a war against because of my innate good heart and good intentions. All I can say is it frightens me.

Existence can never curse us because we aren’t separate from existence, even though our dual nature perceives us to be ‘us’ as separate from the external world.

This is why being aware of ’empath’ abilities is so important. There is something within us that allows us to extend our ‘sensory’ perception beyond our physical self. The same is true for ‘curses’ as you describe, it is something within us, that if it is harming us, we must learn to control.

It’s an arduous process but learning how to ground this energy will be essential if you want to be free of fear from it.
