Spiritual Signs & Omens: 3 Ways You Encounter Them

Coincidence is God’s way of remaining anonymous.

– Albert Einstein

With our constant exposure to digital news, ads, and social media, we’ve lost the valuable skill that our ancestors had of gathering information firsthand from our surroundings.

We’ve lost the ability to perceive the deep interconnection between us and the natural world, and the different ways nature is alive and communicates with us.

The patterns of birds in flight, the blooming of trees outside of their season, the temperature of the ocean’s water, the invasion of ants or snails … there are so many occurrences in nature that carry valuable information and significance that we don’t pay attention to anymore.

In our modern fast-paced world, signs have been divorced from their significance.

Nature is always communicating with us and often this occurs through the appearance of signs and omens.

Indigenous traditions understood this as working and being in harmony with the flow or web of life. Through Physics we now know this as the “unified field.”

These spiritual signs and omens present themselves to us daily (or at least once-in-a-blue-moon) on our spiritual journeys. Like breadcrumbs to follow, we can re-learn how to trace the wisdom of this subtle guidance. The result is an increased sense of understanding, awe, reverence, interconnectedness, love, and self-awareness.

Signs and Omens Are a Magical Doorway to the Present Moment

Image of a beautiful cornflower nature scene

Over the last few years, I have been finding new ways to deeply connect to the world around me. One of these ways is by paying close attention to the signs and omens I encounter throughout my daily life.

Watching out for spiritual signs and omens not only provides me with guidance, but it is also an effective method of grounding my awareness in the present moment.

When seen through clear eyes that are rooted in the present moment, I realize that life sends us so many signs, messages, and omens every day. It’s just that many of us don’t have the eyes to see it.

We get so lost in our chaotic and blurry thoughts of the past and future that we forget the wonders that lie with us in the present.

Keeping this in mind, I try to start every day with grounded and aware presence and receptivity to life. And I often discover something amazing on my morning walks: Life or Spirit is directly communicating with me (as one being ultimately inseparable from It). My unconscious needs or questions are frequently met with spiritual signs and omens of various natures.

Recently I’ve been seeing three birds constantly cross my path: the wagtail, white ibis, and duck. Upon reflection and deep observation, I understand that the wagtail represents playfulness and joy, the white ibis represents opportunity, and the duck represents nurturing. To me the message from Life is very clear, “Every day is an opportunity to experience joy and self-love, no matter what happens.“

Signs, Omens, and the Spiritual Awakening Journey

Spiritual signs and omens image

On a similar note, just as seeing signs and omens are powerful ways of reconnecting with the present moment, they also commonly signify that you’re going through a deep spiritual shift. Some call this an expansion in consciousness, others call it an evolution of the Soul, but in essence, a spiritual awakening is what happens when we “wake up.” In other words, we start questioning the decisions we’ve made, the paths we’ve chosen, and even the beliefs/values we’ve automatically adopted or inherited from others. The proverbial “veil” of unconsciousness and living on autopilot ends – and a new era begins.

So where do spiritual signs and omens come into the picture? The uncanny, strange, serendipitous, and (sometimes) even miraculous occurrences you might experience are all ways of deepening your awakening and keeping you alert. It’s like a nudge from the Divine who is trying to get your attention. Many times, these signs and omens are messages in disguise – your Soul, after all, doesn’t speak in words, but communicates through signs, symbols, feelings, instincts, and vivid dreams.

The Difference Between Signs and Omens

Image of a man and wolf spiritual sign and omen

The Soul communicates itself in different ways throughout our lives but the most common way for us to understand is through metaphor and symbol.

From dream omens to serendipitous signs, metaphors, and symbols – all originate from our rich unconscious which is a direct window into our Souls.

You might ask yourself what the difference is between a sign and an omen. I’ll differentiate them for you below:

What is a Sign?

Signs appear in moments when we are facing a difficult decision or need help integrating a realization about ourselves that we’ve recently had. It’s like consulting an oracle: you know you need guidance, and the answer will present itself when you are open and receptive to it.

What is an Omen?

Omens emerge spontaneously into our lives – they usually arise without any prior request on our part for guidance. They are rare, of great significance, and stand out because of their weird, outlandish, and even bizarre nature. They can also be wondrous, conspicuous, and astounding. But above all, they are always mysterious. In other words, an omen often indicates that an ominous, important, or prophetic event is about to occur or is occurring.

So as we can see, a sign is a form of guidance that emerges at our request, and an omen is a form of guidance that arises spontaneously and out of the blue.

My personal experience with an omen occurred many years ago when I first arrived in Australia. I was going through a powerful personal transformation and on one of my early walks on a rainy winter morning, I came across a brown snake. I froze in place – as did the snake – both of us staring at each other for what must have been a few minutes, though it felt eternal. I felt a strong connection to her, almost as if she was communicating something intuitively. A few moments later, she slithered back into the bushland.

To me, that was a prophetic omen for several reasons. It occurred during twilight when the doors between the different realms are said to open. Snakes are also symbolic of wisdom and transformation as they are constantly shedding new skin. And most importantly, brown snakes are very rare in this area of Australia, especially so in winter when they are in a state of semi-hibernation. As a result, I understood that an intense shift was about to happen in my life, giving me time to prepare, be open, and stay mindful.

One final word on omens: to know that you’ve authentically encountered an omen, you have to be quite familiar with your natural environment to know whether what’s happening is common or totally out-of-place. This is why getting out in nature and connecting with your local environment is very important.

3 Ways You Might Encounter Spiritual Signs and Omens

Image of a deer with burning horns representing a spiritual sign and omen

We’re all connected to One universal force, but that doesn’t mean that we all harmoniously flow down the river of life. If we aren’t aware and if we don’t listen to the signposts that are guiding us toward wise and powerful decisions, we’ll miss out on the wonderful opportunities that Life is presenting to us.

We'll email this article to you, so you can come back to it later!

Your information will never be shared.

There are a few ways that spiritual signs and omens will present themselves to you. Most commonly you’ll find them in nature and through animals as they are alive and directly driven by Spirit. But signs and omens also present themselves in many other ways, shapes, and forms.

Spiritual signs and omens most commonly occur in the following ways:

1. Signs and Omens in Dreams

Spiritual signs and omens often occur in dreams, but not any “usual” or commonplace dream. You’ll know that a sign or omen has emerged in your dream when it is extremely vivid, unusual, or intense. Some of these dreams feel so “real” that it’s hard for us to distinguish them from waking life (as is the case of lucid dreams).

Dreams of paralysis, visits from the dead, shape-shifting into wild creatures, wielding magical powers – all these are examples of dreams that can potentially be deeply meaningful. These types of dreams often herald things to come or epiphanies that are soon to be fully understood (such as understanding the meaning of life).

A quick note: When trying to understand the meaning of your dreams, try to avoid relying on “dream symbol” books which are full of preconceived ideas about what each dream image means. Dreams symbology is a very personal thing. Some people might like horses and in their dream, the horse could be a positive sign, while for others that horse might be a negative omen (i.e., like the horseman of the apocalypse).

2. Signs and Omens in Daily Life

Image of a woman in the snow at night with a star omen above her head

Throughout our daily lives, we’re often given guidance. But due to our often busy and stimulation-filled days, we’re zoned out to this wisdom – almost as if we’re in a state of chronic trance.

Examples of spiritual signs and omens that we may experience in daily life can include sudden ear ringing, stumbling across the same book multiple times, seeing repeated numbers (like 11 11) or symbols, and even circumstances that seem beyond pure serendipity or luck. For example, wanting to find a new house, and being randomly offered a place to stay in the exact suburb you’re interested in. This is known as synchronicity.

There is an infinite number of possible ways that Spirit and your Soul are trying to communicate with you in your everyday life. All you need to do is open your eyes and pay attention to anything that feels deep, unusual, or somehow “special.”

3. Signs and Omens in Nature

Of all the possible ways that spiritual signs and omens can be expressed, nature is my favorite to observe. Why? The answer is that nature is so full of life (and one of its purest expressions), and is ever-changing, and always vibrating with an endless variety of messages.

These messages might be reflected in a puddle, through an insect Spirit Guide, the affirming way a tree sways in the wind, or the enlightening way the clouds part on an overcast day in response to a thought you’re having. These messages might also be expressed through death or decay, such as a fallen tree, or a carcass that reminds us of our own mortality.

When going out in nature, be mindful of what you see and experience. What catches your eye? What is out of place? Keep a journal and reflect on your discoveries. Learn more about how to journal.

Five Ways to Know That You’ve Received a Sign

Image of a mystical landscape in nature

With all this talk of receiving spiritual signs and omens, how do we know when we’ve actually received a sign (or a form of guidance that we’ve asked for)? Pay attention to the following:

  1. If it is a valid sign, it will come shortly after you’ve been pondering about something in your life, or shortly after you’ve directly asked a meaningful and difficult question. This might mean a few seconds to a day or two.
  2. It intuitively feels “special” or meaningful in some way. (You don’t need to know how or why right away.)
  3. It grabs your attention in a sudden or unusual way – kind of like a tap on the shoulder by the Universe.
  4. It makes you feel something such as awe, gratitude, relief, curiosity, etc.
  5. It puts you into a meditative or self-reflective state. In other words, it will make you think “what does that mean?”

What Do You Do After Being Given a Sign?

Being given a sign is like receiving a wink from the Divine – it is a moment of joy, knowing that you are being guided.

There are a number of things you can do after being given a sign. Some of them include:

  • Offering your gratitude (simply saying thank you to God/Universe/Spirit)
  • Contemplate its meaning (reflect on what the sign means and is showing you)
  • Journaling your thoughts and feelings (write down any discoveries or insights that emerge within you)
  • Observing what happens in the next few days, weeks, or months

How to Understand What Exactly a Sign Means

Image of a mirror in nature

Spirit loves symbols and images, so you have to ask yourself what the sign you’ve been given evokes in you.

Spiritual Awakening Bundle:

Find your spiritual purpose. Deepen your self-understanding. Learn to embrace who you are. Let us show you how …

What is the first thought that came to mind? How did you emotionally react to it? Has it brought back any memories? Try to avoid imposing a mental answer onto the sign and instead, allow your intuition or your gut feeling, to be the translator of the sign.

The meaning might not be apparent right away – and if that’s the case, just let time pass and the meaning will unveil itself when the moment is right. This is often the way of things.

***

When we open our awareness to how the Universe is involved in our healing, growth, spiritual awakening journey, and conscious evolution, life takes on a deeper meaning. Not only are we drawn back into the present moment, but we also rediscover the magic and mystery of being connected with something beyond the limited ego. The result is a greater feeling of expansion, faith, trust, hope, and peace.

Signs can be given from without, but significance can only blossom from within.

Hey guys, thanks for this article. I was reminded of my experience with a deer which honestly looked exactly like the picture in your article. I don’t smoke cigarettes anymore but about 5 years ago I did. I was at my parents and went out the basement to have a smoke. I heard some hurried rustling in the woods. Then I saw the deer and he froze. I’m kind to all living things and believe I have no more right to be here then they do. I remained calm and tried to telepathically tell the deer I meant him no harm and he was safe with me. Then a few minutes later what I thankfully thought was a wild dog but must have been a coyote or wolf I’m really not sure appeared much closer to me than the deer. His eyes looked like pure evil. I didn’t react whatsoever and showed no fear because I thought it was a dog. He then began to growl at me. Still I didn’t react. He stared me down then let out a small yelp almost like a cry and ran away. He was mangled and appeared sick. I felt sorry for him too. I stayed outside to finish my cigarette for a couple more minutes and went back inside. It was only then I realized that the male deer with antlers I saw stopped because he was being hunted by the coyote (?) and that when he saw or felt my presence he was aware I could protect him. I went back out 5 minutes later and since the dog like creature ran scared back from where he came from the deer was gone and assumingly left continuing along his direction which was now opposite that of the predator following him. I felt later perhaps I was there to protect him. Lots of deer near my parents house and l believe they know they are safe when they see me. Was just happy to have helped but later felt sorry for the sickly looking coyote I saw having compassion for the circle of life. Not sure what meaning this was meant to have but I have always been the protecting type.

Thank you for sharing Cat. That sounds like a powerful encounter, sometimes we forget we’re part of nature and our very existence affects the journeys and ‘circle of life’ of other beings. Yet each event serves its purpose, time let’s us know what lesson that purpose may bring. :)

After the passing of my husband I was sitting outside on the patio and a brilliant blue butterfly flew around his motorcycle then me. As someone came outside it flew away. That butterfly, as I came to find out is not indigenous to my area of North America. I accepted that it was a sign that he was alright, and that I was going to be alright.

    Hi,
Just got this email about signs in my inbox. I received one today and I’m still contemplating it’s meaning. It was asked for, so I know it was definitely meant for me. Long story short. I was walking out of my apartment building and sat down on the step next to the mailboxes. Right next to my feet was a small dead lizard being devoured by ants. Prior to this, I had been discussing the simulation theory or that we’re all stuck in the matrix being controlled and used, and that almost everything was rigged. I got angry and yelled at the universe to send me a sign of importance only to me while walking out the door. I always thought of humans as ants, like we’re an alien ant farm being observed for some higher intelligent being’s purpose. I also enjoy the whole reptilian overlord conspiracy theory. Seeing that tiny dead lizard being eaten by hundreds of ants made me think, “there are so many of us (the ants), we could easily overthrow the oppressive system/controllers (the lizard)”. Everyone is always so scared of the big, bad (insert whatever), however seeing that dead lizard looking so small and easily destroyed made me think that the so-called elite are going to fall soon. I also got a strong sense of deja vu just then while typing this…

It is late October here in northern New England and the roses have long stopped blooming. Two days ago I noticed a tight pure white rosebud on a favorite climber.
I had been feeling a bit wonky with all the crazy planetary activities lately and had just done a meditation to ground my energy. I touched the tip of the tight bud with my index finger and the rose burst open into a beautiful fragrant cabbage rose.
    Definitely a sign:)

Really enjoyed this post and comments. I really like the analogy of old shoes.

I’m deeply grateful that each time I’ve been out in nature really beautiful connections to animals happens. Yesterday, I hiked solo for the first time, in a well used trail under a ski tram high in the mountains. 5 mins into the hike (actual hike is only 8km 500m gain) the trees came alive w birds. I’m sure they were there the whole time, I could “Hear” them now. I was 1km from the top, when strange mild occurences happened. I saw something dash into a bush. As I continued I could hear breathing, like when my cat snores but louder. My logic mind knew it was a deer. It was early so I probably came up on it while resting. A few minutes later my imagination decided it was a bear, and I became paralyzed with fear. So, I said, well you’ve come far enough for today. So I turned around and headed back. The reason why I was up there, solo, is because I feel my life is so far from what I can do, capable of. I’ve been doing bigger and bigger hikes w a group so fully capable. I feel that looking for vistas around the city of finding the snowline is a way to assert my true spirit. I’ve hiked in this area before w great wonderment. But this specific trail leads to the BEST view of the sunrise here in Vancouver. (Mt Seymour).

I struggle w depression and addiction. Even though I’m active in recovery the dragon depression just gets a hold of me. I found meaning in my sadness by turning around wayward people in addiction. I’m 50 now, and I’d like to move away from the tunnel of darkness and really FEEL my sunshine of my soul. So much grief for one person, that’s why mother nature gave me so many animal friends. This walk is literally to help me walk thru the darkness and enjoy the VIEW, feel the rays of light of a new dawn.

The hike was to scout the route. If I could find the confidence to do, feel and BE.

Half way back I passed a group of 10 women well in there 80s. You don’t see that everyday. Must be a great club.

As I drove the final 14 km off the mountain, two of the most cutest deer were on each side of the road. I see deer often but I stopped for these ones.

I googled mystic occurences nature, and found YOU.

I have rescued 4 turtles from roads from within a 6 week period. Not sure of the meaning. I also see angel numbers often, sometimes 3 & 4 times a day on the clock such as 11:11, 4:44 etc.

I had a dream a snake was following me. It was in my friends shed. Then in the tac room (horse shooing) . Everywhere I went I could sence the snake following me. In the dream I went to the house and told my friend about the snake. Then left the house to go keep an eye on it. I didn’t trust the snake.
A few weeks later our house got raided by the police.
    The snake was a warning.

I’ve had two experiences that have deeply affected me during my lifetime. The first was a dream almost 40 years ago. It was so profound that the details remain with me to this day. I dreamed I was on a seaside pier. I was alone except for a figure I could see standing at the end of the pier. As I approached I could see that the figure was that of a woman, dressed in black robes with a large half-moon medallion hanging around her neck. As I approached her the sky began to darken and become tumultuous, dark clouds swirling. The closer I got, the stranger I began to feel. She told me to lay down, which I did. As I lay there watching the sky becoming more and more violent, I started to feel myself slipping away, almost as though I were dying. Then I heard her voice calling out to me over the howling wind. “Call out the names of God! Call out the names of God!” Suddenly I was calling out names of God that I wasn’t even aware existed As I did so, the clouds began to part and suddenly there were two swans, swimming through the opening gap in the sky, toward one another. I watched as they merged and then, suddenly, I awoke from the dream.
The second event was a few years ago. I was relaxing in a hammock, listening to instrumental music through my headphones, eyes closed, appreciating the sensations of the lake and atmosphere around me. When I opened my eyes and glanced to my left I was amazed to see every blade of grass, every leaf on every tree, every living thing, glowing. It was spectacular! At first I thought it was just my eyes adjusting to the light, but it wasn’t. I got up from the hammock and started walking up a nearby path, looking in wonderment at the glowing flowers on the hillside. This continued until I got to the top of the path. That’s when I started to try to “figure out” what was causing everything to glow. The more I thought, the faster the glow diminished until it disappeared completely.
I see the earlier dream as symbolizing the many ways we ascribe names to Source, each being as powerful as the last. The swans represent a coming together of all of these in a process of awakening.
The second event I have yet to fully understand. Perhaps it was a reminder to view the world as a living, spiritual space filled with wonder and awe, and the dangers inherent in diluting that wonder and awe by way of our mental reasoning.

Can I just say this: I have been quite detached from Nature for a few years now, even though I was very much attuned in the past. I am/was a biologist who did field work, and many times I encountered what I felt were unusual, almost supernatural experiences from the natural world around me, a deep connection. Some truly terrible things happened to me though, and I lost that connection. Early in the year (2020), as I was walking my dog (a rescue, who I acquired some months before, in 2019), I felt compelled to stand near the forest close to where we were walking. I listened to the wind, and it was a blustery day in February. The trees were still “sleeping” so to speak. But I said out loud, in an appeal to the Universe: “please, let me just have some peace now, in the time I have left”. In the weeks that followed, the pandemic became known to us all. I am literally afraid to ask the Universe for anything now, for fear that my life will get worse than it is. Irrational? Yes. Do I feel it anyhow? Yes.
A few days ago I did have a strange occurrence, of sorts. Again, walking my dog, I encountered large black vultures who caught my attention so much so that I stopped walking and just observed them for a bit. I am not afraid of them and do not consider them a bad “omen”. Instead, I rather relate to them, as they are almost universally hated, considered ugly, and people try to eradicate them, not realizing that these birds have an intrinsic place in the web of life. I’m still trying to decide what it meant to me, but I feel that my Soul might be trying to tell me that though I am something of an outcast, I still have value. Just like the vultures, and other animals who are maligned.

      Hello there, Fenris!
I’m incredibly sorry to hear about your struggles and the difficulties you’ve been facing.. With your permission, I’d really like to send some love and peace your way to help ease your fears or worries ❤

It’s extremely understandable why you would be afraid to ask the Universe for anything now but try looking at this situation in a different perspective.

The Universe, Spirit, Higher Self, etc., answers our requests in weird ways. Usually, never how we expect, that’s for sure… But there is always a reason as to why it unfolds the way it does. It’s sometimes hard to see when you’re in the thick of it but after time has passed, it’ll click! You’ll start piecing together all the events and signs that lead you to that point.

Going through intense struggles myself during the Pandemic, I’ve come to realize something incredibly important. This HAD to happen. In order for a person to grow, they have to have the room to grow! We have to be torn down to the foundations in order to rebuild. Kind of like when you’ve outgrown your shoes. The shoes start to pinch and hurt. Uncomfortable at first, then becomes more aggravating and painful. You can decide to keep wearing the shoes, knowing your feet are too big to fit in them, and the longer you keep wearing those old tattered shoes, the more painful they become until the seams themselves burst. Now, you have no choice but to buy bigger shoes. New shoes always have a period of breaking them in. They’re somewhat stiff and rigid but the more you walk in them, the more the shoe forms to your specific shape of your foot. Walking in them becomes so much more comfortable. It’s such a relief!

That is what is happening with the Pandemic. We are going through the growing pains until we burst and have no choice but to adopt a new way of living. We have become so disconnected from the true joys of life. The simple pleasures. We have been caught up in constantly chasing after things, neglecting ourselves and our families without even realizing it. We forgot how to be at peace and be still. Quiet. The spider will not catch a fly in her web by running around everywhere. She spins her web and waits patiently for the bugs to come to her. We can only run ourselves ragged for so long before our energy is completely depleted and our bodies force us to rest.

When you look at everything happening right now, it’s a time of great upheaval and struggles. On the surface, it’s pure chaos and nothing is certain. But if you look deeper, really truly look beyond the surface, there are so many beautiful things that are happening in the midst of all the struggles. People are actually at home together, spending time with their families, getting out in nature, pursuing hobbies they’ve always wanted to do but never had time, learning how to be resourceful with what is already around them rather than going out to buy things, actually getting in touch with all those deep dark feelings we have shoved way down inside of ourselves.

Look at all the people who have come together during this time! Strangers helping strangers, people getting in touch with their communities because they know what they are going through. Because we are all going through this process together.

We are being forced to be STILL and release what no longer serves us to be our best selves. To acknowledge our emotions, our actions, our past, so we can see them for what they are and learn not to suppress them anymore. To be there for ourselves and others like we are supposed to be. In harmony and beautiful balance.

Does it make the pain any less? Absolutely not! But it gives it a meaningful purpose. The suffering is not without reason. Not just cruelty from the Universe or a sick sense of humor. It’s for us to grow. To heal. To love and have compassion without limitations. Not just for ourselves but for everyone.

I hope this has helped, even if it was only a little. You are not alone. We are all in this crazy, scary, but beautiful, dance together.

Thank you so much, SisterSisterSpirit. I welcome your offer of love and peace. I do feel this is a time of great upheaval, as you say, and it has been a long time coming. The state of our world is dreadful in many ways, but I agree that this has been a wake up call to many people.
