Sex. It’s the driving force of nature, the energetic core of life.

From the pollination of plants to the biological urge to reproduce in animals and humans alike, nearly everything has a sex drive โ€“ and that sex drive arises from our libido.

As the essence of all creation, sex is the center of all life; from the birth of a child to the ecstatic conception of a piece of art, all creation is rooted in the libido. ย

What is Sexual Transmutation?

Image of a woman practicing sexual transmutation

Sexual transmutation is the alchemical practice of channeling and directing your sexual energy into a ‘higher’ purpose. As one of the most powerful energies in existence, our sexual energy can be directed towards achieving goals, manifesting dreams, and experiencing deeper states of consciousness.

Famous examples of people who practice sexual transmutation (either knowingly or unknowingly) include:

  • Nikola Tesla
  • Joan of Arc
  • Gandhi
  • Richard Wanger
  • Maria de Naglowska
  • Dante Alighieri
  • Beethoven
  • Mother Teresa
  • Andy Warhol
  • Henry Thoreau
  • Leonardo Da Vinci

9 Benefits of Sexual Transmutation

Image of a sensual man and woman

Anyone with a sex drive (no matter how big or small) can practice sexual transmutation. This is also a practice that suits anyone of any spiritual or religious persuasion (as long as that religion embraces sex as a natural and healthy experience).

Some of the most commonly noted benefits include:

  1. More focus and mental clarity
  2. Increased creativity
  3. Enhanced motivation and drive
  4. Boost of physical energy (good for those who suffer from fatigue)
  5. More assertiveness and confidence
  6. Improved mood
  7. Greater ability to manifest change
  8. Heightened self-awareness
  9. Intensified spiritual experiences

If you think that I’ve missed out any key benefits, let me know below in the comments!

Sexual Transmutation Throughout History

Image of a sensual woman in a bathtub

Ancient cultures have, for thousands of years, recognized the power and force of the libido. While some have condemned and feared it (as the mighty force it is), others have celebrated and channeled it.

Apart from the Tantric and Taoist sexual energy practices, there are countless other references to the hidden powers within sex. ย Kabbalah, for instance, sees sexual desire as the deepest spiritual expression one can have. ย And in Yogic philosophy, our pure sexual energy is dormant until awakened in its highest form known as “Kundalini.”

Many esoteric groups also practice something called “Sex Magick,” which is connected to psychiatrist Carl Jung’s notion of sexual alchemy (similar to Freud’s sexual sublimation). ย In Sex Magick, it is taught that with enough will, we can transform the raw energy of our libidos into the transcendent power of creativity.

Sexual Energy = Intense Creativity

Image of a sensual woman practicing sexual transmutation

Frequent sex has often been perceived, in many religious traditions, to be a kind of distraction. And while there’s absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying regular sex, there’s so much more to the libido then just getting off (orgasming).

Sex, other than being a source of pleasure, can also be channeled into any form of creation โ€“ from writing that book you’ve been meaning to pen to mastering the art of intuition. As sexual energy is creative energy, it makes sense to make the most of its innate benefits. Just look at the likes of Immanuel Kant, Lewis Carroll, and even Emily Dickinson โ€“ all practitioners of sexual transmutation (in their own way)!

It’s true that after having sex, we feel more relaxed โ€“ and this is because the body’s energy and motivation have been temporarily depleted. But imagine what would happen if you used that burst and release of sexual energy toward fulfilling a dream or goal. There are many ways to do this. Visualization is probably the most common method (we’ll explore more practices soon).

Sexual Energy = Spiritual Transformation

Image of a woman with sexual energy emanating from her

There are two sides to the path of sexual transmutation: sexual abstinence and sexual expression, both can create powerful spiritual transformations. What path you decide to walk depends on your libido, character, and personal needs.

Regardless of what path you choose, your sexual energy can be channeled toward feeling closer to the Divine and more in touch with your Soul. Indeed, the moment of orgasm is a holy glimpse into the Divine โ€“ it is a moment of no-mind, a moment when you temporarily merge with Oneness and lose your limited ego.

You can also use your sexual energy to fuel your inner work and infuse your path with intensity (especially if you decide to remain celibate). Ancient Hindu philosophy calls this the path of Bhakti or devotional longing. We can see this almost erotic love affair with the Divine within figures such as Sufi poet Rumi, Christian saints such as Teresa of Avila, and Hindu mystics such as Anandamayi Ma.

How to Practice Sexual Transmutation

Image of a woman with flowers over her body representing sexual transmutation

When motivated by sexual desire, we develop a vaster imagination, deeper courage, firmer willpower, more tenacious persistence, and flourishing creativity that we weren’t even aware of. ย

If the sexual energy within humanity can become so strong that it moves us to hurt others or risk imprisonment to satiate it, imagine what could happen if we harnessed this energy and directed it toward a greater purpose?

Would you like to save this?

We'll email this article to you, so you can come back to it later!

Your information will never be shared.

Before I delve into how to practice sexual transmutation, I want to put a disclaimer here:

The path of sexual transmutation isn’t about rapidly indulging, denying, running away from, or even overcoming the desire for sex. ย It’s about accepting your sexual drive as an innate part of your nature; as the base notes to your higher symphony. ย

I have seen many who feel as though they should rise “above” their “lower nature” elements, and thus decide to flee from or ignore their sex drive, considering it primitive and even “unspiritual.” Please don’t make this mistake. Sexuality is beautiful. Orgasms are doorways into the Divine. Pleasure is your birthright. Let’s not confine this part of ourselves to the shadow self (either through excessive indulgence or denial).

Ultimately, sexual energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be transformed.

Most of the following techniques I have experimented with โ€“ and they suit both men and women. Feel free to try one practice per week and only try those you feel comfortable or safe doing.

Sexual energy transmutation techniques:

1. 7 Day Experiment

For a whole week try abstaining from any sexual activity โ€“ either alone or with someone else. After the week, explore what you think and how you feel. While some people will benefit immensely from this practice (more energy, happier mood, greater creativity), others will struggle with built-up negative energy (anxiety, frustration, grumpy mood). This experiment will tell you whether the path of sexual abstinence or sexual expression suits you more โ€“ both are two sides of sexual transmutation.

2. Observe Non-judgmentally

If you choose to experiment with the path of sexual abstinence, practice allowing any feelings that arise within you emerge. Try not to judge them, instead, just be an observer. See these feelings as they are, they are natural. Simply observe what these desires and feelings are telling you about yourself. Also, try refraining from labeling them as “sexual energy.” Rather, treat them as a sensation, like when you experience something “hot” or “cold,” and experience them without any expectations of getting rid of them. Some people by simply observing have orgasmic rushes of energy without any physical stimulation.

3. Tantric Edging

Tantric edging is the practice of having sex and coming to the very edge of an orgasm, without reaching the point of ejaculation/climax. This is an ancient Tantric practice that helps to increase your energy, focus, and inspiration. Tantric edging also helps to boost your creativity and is great for those who suffer from chronic fatigue or depression.

4. Orgasmic Visualization

Visualizing is a simple sexual transmutation technique. The only thing that this practice requires is having a clear intention before engaging in sex.

Think about what you would like to direct your energy toward the most. Perhaps you want to finish that college degree, master a skill you’ve been itching to learn, achieve an important goal, or even have a profound spiritual experience of some kind. Whatever is important to you, carry it with you into sex. (Remember, this must be a realistic goal.)

As you engage in sex and reach the point of orgasm, visualize yourself achieving that dream, goal, or desire. The climax of sexual energy directed toward the image you’ve created in your mind is powerful. In Tibetan mysticism, this is known as creating a thought form or tulpa.

Some people feel uncomfortable doing this practice without telling their partner (it can be perceived as ‘using’ your partner to achieve something that benefits you). So if that is a concern of yours, have a playful conversation and let them know.

5. Create a Sigil

A sigil is a symbol that is infused with meaning and intention. This is a practice that is commonly used in Sex Magick or amongst practitioners of Western esotericism. Learn more about sigil magic to create a sigil.

After you learn how to create a sigil, you can then ‘activate’ it (and thereby activate your intention) during sex. At the point of orgasm, focus on your sigil (which you have put nearby somewhere) and then relax. You have now planted a seed within your unconscious mind, fuelled by sexual energy.

(Bonus) 6. Breathwork

Breathwork is the practice of consciously directing your breath. When it comes to sexual transmutation, breathwork can be used to move your libidinal energy throughout your body. This is a particularly effective technique if you suffer from a sacral chakra imbalance (the energetic center of your sexuality).

To practice this technique, breathe in slowly, feeling your sexual energy accumulate within you, then breathe out slowly and feel it dispersing throughout your body. This is a wonderful way of moving your libidinal energy away from your genital area and balancing it throughout your being.

You can also visualize your sexual energy moving up through your spine (the energy of kundalini) and moving to your third eye chakra. Ok, so I am doing nofap and my energy is extreme. What’s more I’m
asexual so having intercourse is a one huge no (even if I made myself to
do it, I will never have anyone to share it with, so that’s a second
reason). So, what to do, because I’m being attacked at night by archons
    of perversion and self-rape.

    Hello,

Thank you for posting this up. What are some books that you could recommend about actual breathing exercises or physical practices that put this transformation into motion?

I’ve started practicing Qigong and been practicing yoga for 8 years. For about the past two years I have been trying to store up the energy and use it for something, especially since I’m stalled in life (career wise) and single. I realized after about a year there was no way I could just repress or ignore it.

How does the transmutation actually occur? Is it just intention? Is it Qigong or yoga? Is it a physical exercise or practice? I can barely find any info about this and what I do find doesn’t go into any detail. How does one study this?

I don’t like indulging that energy solo because I feel drained and regretful, but it is a tremendous power to begin holding onto and can be quite overwhelming. At a certain point though after enough setbacks my willpower, understanding, and desire for greatness just overtook my desire to satiate.

The benefits I’ve experience so far are really great and very motivating. Abundant energy power, social magnetism, clear headed thought and creativity, less anxiety, more grounded, gaining muscle weight (something that’s really difficult for me to do), and more natural ease and manifested confidence. It can really change your whole outlook on things. I haven’t even figured out the flipside of totally transforming it into creativity and productivity either. If you are familiar with the PMO term, I found it much more successful to cut out the O and work left than cut out the P and work right.

It takes a while of spacing out ejaculations to even get to a point of where you can physically stand the process of neural rewiring of the pleasure centers if they are abused. I’m going the whole month of February without any release, and I’m hoping to do no stimulation at all the third and fourth weeks.

I’m really amazed at just how much more motivated or easily I launch into tasks and get all my work done. It’s not that I wasn’t motivated before or not confident before, it just feels like it supercharges you as a person. I can feel in my yoga practice more stamina and flow also. I’m also interested in how you can keep your Chi and circulate it through the body to heal yourself and unblock problem areas so there is no need to go to a massage therapist for muscle knots.

If you can give me any pointers in terms of what might be a next step in the journey or good books/videos to read/watch I would be quite grateful for accurate information. I can feel this is part of my path and if I could receive some teachings that are well founded it would greatly benefit my own journey which I’ve been winging and learning as I go.

    Thank you

I’ve been practicing Semen Retention/Sex Transmutation on and off for awhile now. It is not easy. The longest I’ve went without ejaculating was 40 days BUT I was still watching porn and edging at the same time, so I’m sure I wasn’t getting the full benefits of the practice. The urges are very strong and with me being a very sensual guy and preferring to be in a committed loving relationship than having sex indiscriminately, you can imagine how hard it is. I like the challenge though and I want to own my sexuality and be proud it.

      Hola Kameron,

I applaud your efforts and interest in this field of sexuality. It takes years of practice to master it (as does it’s opposing art of sacred sex) but it can be done. Obviously ‘edging’ is consuming a large portion of that energy.

Not only that but sex and arousal are mind centered. They are fueled by a physical libido energy, but the energy is awakened by our mental stimulation and where we direction our attention. If you focus on sex through your daily routine, Sexual Transmutation will be very hard for people who have strong libidos.

Try to avoid any arousal stimuli, I’ll write more exercises on this topic in future coming articles.

      Warmly,

      Sol

Thank you for you’re reply and yes, thinking about sex daily with this practice makes it much harder but I have learned that you really must transmu ate the energy. Idle time is you’re enemy, being productive helps A LOT.

I look forward for your future post on this subject.

          Hola Nova,

Edging keeps your testosterone energy constantly on the ‘edge’, being produced without being consumed. Such a task may give you short bursts of energy but if done for prolonged periods of time the body becomes exhausted from such an activity. This is what often leads to ‘adrenal fatigue’ for those who practice it.

            And for a woman?
My partner and I have each had trouble climaxing at different periods of our relationship. I have always needed more stimulation than I feel is “normal” compared to other women.
This is causing problems in our relationship because I can only climax while on top but I am now 7 months pregnant and my partner does not feel comfortable with that position because of our unborn child being so present.
So I am sometimes edging, or being stimulated just enough to allow him to penetrate and climax but I am left feeling unsatisfied, sometimes used, confused, guilty for wanting to pleasure myself or guilty for just wanting to climax. It seems my options are either masturbation (which comes with guilt, self judgement and an uncertainty about the presence of something my friend, a spiritual healer, called a “sexual demon” which has plagued me since i first discovered masturbation that I have worked hard to distance myself from because of my fear of it being the root of all my sexual issues. Also i feel that masturbationakes it even harder for me to climax during sex with my partner, though already rare and feels in a way like masturbation as I am just using his body to make myself climax, as he does with mine at times)
or complete abstinence and try to transmute this energy into something else (but of course I have a partner and want to have a healthy sexual relationship with him and also be available to him sexually without feeling used, guilty or selfish).
            Please help.

Hare Bol, your article was very insightful into the benefits of transforming your sexual energy desire into forms of higher or positve energy cultivation.
However my root problem which I’d greatly appreciate your guidance in is my huge struggle to stop wasting my primal energy. I’ve attempted tens of times to abstain from sexual energy wastage, succeeding in retaining that energy for several days by mediating for a couple of seconds to dissipate that desire to release this “uncontrollable” urge. While most of the spiritual masters of our age and the greatest philosophical movements of our time have mentioned here or there wastage of this spiritual energy is misguided by our modern approach there for I logically rationalise that they must be collectively correct which leads me to subconsciously realise it’s not wrong but unintelligent to spill sexual energy if you desire to gain greater conciseness. (Sorry for being very long in my question but every person is individual and I would like you to understand my individualised thought process, In this particular matter so you can guide me the best way you can knowing all or most of the angles.) eventually I get a a huge surge of this spiritual energy and I question why I’m abstaining from this incredible sexual emotion, consciously i justify and question that I feel the same whether I release this energy or withhold it, therefor why withhold this desire? My rational reasoning eventually or usually wins, bringing the cycle back to square one where in a couple of days I begin the game anew knowing I’m gonna respawn again In square one In a few days. How can I transform this desire into spiritual energy? as I think accepting it is key but without the need to release it. How do I stop the desire to release the sexual energy. Kundalini? Yoga? Meditation?

      Hola Sam,

Sexual energy is a powerful thing, but there’s no absolute way that it ‘should’ be used. Many of these masters you speak of were Eastern masters and they share what worked for them. Eastern spiritual is different from Western spiritually as we have much more defined Ego’s that the Eastern do (https://lonerwolf.com/psychospiritual/ read more head).

While the East concentrates on methods of abstinence, for many people in the West I actually suggest the opposite which is spiritual sex; as a method of catharsis from our very structured, repressed and rigid inbuilt conditioned cultural sense of self (which is far more defined than the Eastern who are more community and family centered and less sexually inhibited making celibacy a form of energy gathering while for us, we already have too much built up.)

Sex can be spiritual, abstinence can be spiritual; there’s nothing we can do that is not spiritual as spirituality is more concerned with the quality of your conscious awareness than with the external ‘dreams’ we’ve created of division and separation.

Thank you very much for this answer Mateo Sol, the distinction between the eastern community way of life as opposed to our western individual and egotic habits gives me a much better outlook on how to deal with this energy and why despite a strong will to enhance my spirituality, prolonged loneliness and abstinence seemed absurd to me.

Kudos! I couldn’t agree more and this too has been my experience. Harnessed within sex is a profound opportunity for “more” – not more things or more orgasms even, but more intimacy, more creativity, and more awe. In our rush to finish we miss the extended moment. It is worth it to train mindfully as you have suggested.

During the most difficult time in my relationship with my husband we participated in a year long love and ecstasy training taught by Margot Anand that changed our life, our relationship with each other and our sex life–this is the subject of my upcoming memoir “More . . . journey to mystical union through the sacred and the profane” (being released next year). It documents the tremendous opportunity for healing and enlightenment that began when we studied sacred sexuality together.

I was happy to find your site and to connect with others interested in sacred sexuality, meditation and consciousness. Thank you for the tremendous time and attention you have dedicated to it!

      You’re welcome Mariah.

From what I remember of my meeting with Margot was much of her work derived from the Tantric philosophy and the Rajneeshi movement in the 70’s. I think there’s much to explore in this area for those interested, including Crowley’s Sex Magick and Wilhelm Reich’s Orgone Energy.

Tomorrow’s article is actually on the topic of Spiritual Sex; the next step in sexual transmutation. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.
