Sexual Transmutation: 5 Ways to Channel Sexual Energy

Sex. It’s the driving force of nature, the energetic core of life.

From the pollination of plants to the biological urge to reproduce in animals and humans alike, nearly everything has a sex drive โ€“ and that sex drive arises from our libido.

As the essence of all creation, sex is the center of all life; from the birth of a child to the ecstatic conception of a piece of art, all creation is rooted in the libido. ย

What is Sexual Transmutation?

Image of a woman practicing sexual transmutation

Sexual transmutation is the alchemical practice of channeling and directing your sexual energy into a ‘higher’ purpose. As one of the most powerful energies in existence, our sexual energy can be directed towards achieving goals, manifesting dreams, and experiencing deeper states of consciousness.

Famous examples of people who practice sexual transmutation (either knowingly or unknowingly) include:

  • Nikola Tesla
  • Joan of Arc
  • Gandhi
  • Richard Wanger
  • Maria de Naglowska
  • Dante Alighieri
  • Beethoven
  • Mother Teresa
  • Andy Warhol
  • Henry Thoreau
  • Leonardo Da Vinci

9 Benefits of Sexual Transmutation

Image of a sensual man and woman

Anyone with a sex drive (no matter how big or small) can practice sexual transmutation. This is also a practice that suits anyone of any spiritual or religious persuasion (as long as that religion embraces sex as a natural and healthy experience).

Some of the most commonly noted benefits include:

  1. More focus and mental clarity
  2. Increased creativity
  3. Enhanced motivation and drive
  4. Boost of physical energy (good for those who suffer from fatigue)
  5. More assertiveness and confidence
  6. Improved mood
  7. Greater ability to manifest change
  8. Heightened self-awareness
  9. Intensified spiritual experiences

If you think that I’ve missed out any key benefits, let me know below in the comments!

Sexual Transmutation Throughout History

Ancient cultures have, for thousands of years, recognized the power and force of the libido. While some have condemned and feared it (as the mighty force it is), others have celebrated and channeled it.

Apart from the Tantric and Taoist sexual energy practices, there are countless other references to the hidden powers within sex. ย Kabbalah, for instance, sees sexual desire as the deepest spiritual expression one can have. ย And in Yogic philosophy, our pure sexual energy is dormant until awakened in its highest form known as “Kundalini.”

Many esoteric groups also practice something called “Sex Magick,” which is connected to psychiatrist Carl Jung’s notion of sexual alchemy (similar to Freud’s sexual sublimation). ย In Sex Magick, it is taught that with enough will, we can transform the raw energy of our libidos into the transcendent power of creativity.

Sexual Energy = Intense Creativity

Image of a sensual woman practicing sexual transmutation

Frequent sex has often been perceived, in many religious traditions, to be a kind of distraction. And while there’s absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying regular sex, there’s so much more to the libido then just getting off (orgasming).

Sex, other than being a source of pleasure, can also be channeled into any form of creation โ€“ from writing that book you’ve been meaning to pen to mastering the art of intuition. As sexual energy is creative energy, it makes sense to make the most of its innate benefits. Just look at the likes of Immanuel Kant, Lewis Carroll, and even Emily Dickinson โ€“ all practitioners of sexual transmutation (in their own way)!

It’s true that after having sex, we feel more relaxed โ€“ and this is because the body’s energy and motivation have been temporarily depleted. But imagine what would happen if you used that burst and release of sexual energy toward fulfilling a dream or goal. There are many ways to do this. Visualization is probably the most common method (we’ll explore more practices soon).

Sexual Energy = Spiritual Transformation

Image of a woman with sexual energy emanating from her

There are two sides to the path of sexual transmutation: sexual abstinence and sexual expression, both can create powerful spiritual transformations. What path you decide to walk depends on your libido, character, and personal needs.

Regardless of what path you choose, your sexual energy can be channeled toward feeling closer to the Divine and more in touch with your Soul. Indeed, the moment of orgasm is a holy glimpse into the Divine โ€“ it is a moment of no-mind, a moment when you temporarily merge with Oneness and lose your limited ego.

You can also use your sexual energy to fuel your inner work and infuse your path with intensity (especially if you decide to remain celibate). Ancient Hindu philosophy calls this the path of Bhakti or devotional longing. We can see this almost erotic love affair with the Divine within figures such as Sufi poet Rumi, Christian saints such as Teresa of Avila, and Hindu mystics such as Anandamayi Ma.

How to Practice Sexual Transmutation

Image of a woman with flowers over her body representing sexual transmutation

When motivated by sexual desire, we develop a vaster imagination, deeper courage, firmer willpower, more tenacious persistence, and flourishing creativity that we weren’t even aware of. ย

If the sexual energy within humanity can become so strong that it moves us to hurt others or risk imprisonment to satiate it, imagine what could happen if we harnessed this energy and directed it toward a greater purpose?

Would you like to save this?

We'll email this article to you, so you can come back to it later!

Your information will never be shared.

Before I delve into how to practice sexual transmutation, I want to put a disclaimer here:

The path of sexual transmutation isn’t about rapidly indulging, denying, running away from, or even overcoming the desire for sex. ย It’s about accepting your sexual drive as an innate part of your nature; as the base notes to your higher symphony. ย

I have seen many who feel as though they should rise “above” their “lower nature” elements, and thus decide to flee from or ignore their sex drive, considering it primitive and even “unspiritual.” Please don’t make this mistake. Sexuality is beautiful. Orgasms are doorways into the Divine. Pleasure is your birthright. Let’s not confine this part of ourselves to the shadow self (either through excessive indulgence or denial).

Ultimately, sexual energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be transformed.

Most of the following techniques I have experimented with โ€“ and they suit both men and women. Feel free to try one practice per week and only try those you feel comfortable or safe doing.

Sexual energy transmutation techniques:

1. 7 Day Experiment

For a whole week try abstaining from any sexual activity โ€“ either alone or with someone else. After the week, explore what you think and how you feel. While some people will benefit immensely from this practice (more energy, happier mood, greater creativity), others will struggle with built-up negative energy (anxiety, frustration, grumpy mood). This experiment will tell you whether the path of sexual abstinence or sexual expression suits you more โ€“ both are two sides of sexual transmutation.

2. Observe Non-judgmentally

If you choose to experiment with the path of sexual abstinence, practice allowing any feelings that arise within you emerge. Try not to judge them, instead, just be an observer. See these feelings as they are, they are natural. Simply observe what these desires and feelings are telling you about yourself. Also, try refraining from labeling them as “sexual energy.” Rather, treat them as a sensation, like when you experience something “hot” or “cold,” and experience them without any expectations of getting rid of them. Some people by simply observing have orgasmic rushes of energy without any physical stimulation.

3. Tantric Edging

Tantric edging is the practice of having sex and coming to the very edge of an orgasm, without reaching the point of ejaculation/climax. This is an ancient Tantric practice that helps to increase your energy, focus, and inspiration. Tantric edging also helps to boost your creativity and is great for those who suffer from chronic fatigue or depression.

4. Orgasmic Visualization

Visualizing is a simple sexual transmutation technique. The only thing that this practice requires is having a clear intention before engaging in sex.

Think about what you would like to direct your energy toward the most. Perhaps you want to finish that college degree, master a skill you’ve been itching to learn, achieve an important goal, or even have a profound spiritual experience of some kind. Whatever is important to you, carry it with you into sex. (Remember, this must be a realistic goal.)

As you engage in sex and reach the point of orgasm, visualize yourself achieving that dream, goal, or desire. The climax of sexual energy directed toward the image you’ve created in your mind is powerful. In Tibetan mysticism, this is known as creating a thought form or tulpa.

Some people feel uncomfortable doing this practice without telling their partner (it can be perceived as ‘using’ your partner to achieve something that benefits you). So if that is a concern of yours, have a playful conversation and let them know.

5. Create a Sigil

A sigil is a symbol that is infused with meaning and intention. This is a practice that is commonly used in Sex Magick or amongst practitioners of Western esotericism. Learn more about sigil magic to create a sigil.

After you learn how to create a sigil, you can then ‘activate’ it (and thereby activate your intention) during sex. At the point of orgasm, focus on your sigil (which you have put nearby somewhere) and then relax. You have now planted a seed within your unconscious mind, fuelled by sexual energy.

(Bonus) 6. Breathwork

Breathwork is the practice of consciously directing your breath. When it comes to sexual transmutation, breathwork can be used to move your libidinal energy throughout your body. This is a particularly effective technique if you suffer from a sacral chakra imbalance (the energetic center of your sexuality).

To practice this technique, breathe in slowly, feeling your sexual energy accumulate within you, then breathe out slowly and feel it dispersing throughout your body. This is a wonderful way of moving your libidinal energy away from your genital area and balancing it throughout your being.

You can also visualize your sexual energy moving up through your spine (the energy of kundalini) and moving to your third eye chakra. This is a powerful technique, particularly if you want to channel your sexual energy toward spiritual growth (however, go slowly and be gentle with this practice, it can be powerful!).

A fascinating subject and out of all places I learned about it from Buddhism and Hinduism in relation to Kundalini practice. As I understand, yogis and sadhus work for a long time to learn how to do it. Transformation, re-channeling of sexual energy is ultimate alchemy. Your tip about orgasmic manifestation is definitely something worth exploring. Please continue writing on this subject. And thank you!

Thank you Lola, I appreciate it. There’s so much to explore in this particular subject I feel it would need a whole website to itself haha, orgasmic manifestation is definitely worth trying out for yourself, especially with the use of sigils, I know the pagan/magick paths make a lot of use of sex magick in this way.

Hello, I have an important question and really hope you respond.

I seem to “feel” no sexual energy, but I perceive this is not accurate. I had a strict upbringing and an ambitious life. I think I channeled it all into other areas of my life, and now I am in a romantic relationship I want to enjoy, but can’t seem to do the reverse.

Does this make sense? I am artistic, competitive, and a very ambitious scientist. I definitely have sexual energy. I just don’t know how to bring it back to its origin. My friends teasingly say I must have been a monk in a past life. Indeed I was celibate for years, and thought nothing of it, but made my greatest career leaps during that time.

    Thoughts and help, please?

Thank you Peffs for the question. Being in tune with our sexual energy has a lot to do with feeling safe enough to be vulnerable, if we perceive sexuality to be an a taboo shameful topic (as you mention strict upbringing), we will struggle to feel okay with allowing this ‘playfulness’ sexually to come out.

Another aspect that can interfere with feeling this sexual energy more is your ambitiousness. I’ve been very much the same in my single-minded focus, but over the years I’ve realized its limitations. When we focus so intently, we’re really narrowing our whole self toward a goal/objective, in doing so we lose touch with ‘feeling’ our internal worlds more (a lot of that drive forward is very mental centered.)

So it’s a matter of; 1) Exploring if we carry any hidden shame/beliefs around sex 2) Feeling safe enough in our own bodies, environments, relationships, life to explore sexuality more and 3) Learning to be more in tune and accepting of our internal sexual needs/desires.

      I hope that helps :)

        It does! Thank you!

I think I need to explore the idea that perhaps I need to release things like shame (family is super religious and imposing, I still kinda struggle with my family relationships today), but wasn’t really sure how to start.

I know I feel safe in my relationship, but I think I don’t… feel safe in life in general. I experienced a lot of tumult. No support from family, homelessness, and the drive. It’s all I focused on. It’s what got me out of the living on streets. No matter the pain, the hunger, the sleeplessness, I marched. I focused. I sacrificed everything for the sake of progress and a better future. Glad to say everything worked out. I need to phase out

I’m slowly learning, I have definitely made progress emotionally. My partner is truly amazing and patient.

Thank you. It does help to have pointers in the right direction.

Hi, i have no partner and unreleased sexual energy. Subject of the article caught my attention however almost all of them are for the people who can have sex regularly. I am already trying to transform my sexual energy by practicing Tibetan rites, the sixth one. Since I tend to understand how it works, whenever I feel an urge on my sacral chakra, I direct that energy to the higher chackras. It’s really working and keeps me more focused.

Thank you Melike for sharing. Transmutation is actually much more effective without a partner. As mentioned in the article, techniques like ‘edging’ allow you to experience sexual energy without releasing it and anything mention to try with a partner can be done by yourself as this is what distinguishes transmutation from spiritual sex (which we discuss in our other article.)

I consider myself a sexual being which is part of my living in my body with respect and care. I consider myself to be a soul that lives through this body now… I have a spiritual existence, emotional experiences and bodily/ sensual sensations. In my experience sex magic is about the meeting of these worlds. I have projected myself into other place at the point of orgasm…sometimes this was in order to contact someone.
Thanks for this article it has reminded me of this powerful tool and I will expand my use of it now that I am equipped with new information .

I find this article misleading. In order to transmutate sexual energy, there has to be energy, you cant send energy you dont have to your third eye if your balls are empty, this is Maya.
Sex is very important for our spiritual revolution, sexual love, sex without end, sex without orgasm, orgasm it’s a waste of energy, energy needed to activate our chakras, sexual energy it’s the water of life that nurture our tree of life, Kundalini, any other practice it’s just a placebo for the self righteous ego, but a good business to gan followers and money, bc it’s not popular to teach celibacy.
The teaching in this article will be welcome by the ego looking to feel spiritual.

      Thank you Nox for sharing.

We all have sexual energy, except for a few medical exceptions and sexual types (like Asexuals), the sexual energy is latent in all of us and it’s not located in an external physical location such as the balls (as Russian monks proved a few centuries ago by chopping them off thinking they wouldn’t feel any more impure thoughts.)

In this article, I’m not claiming sex isn’t important, I’m sharing a technique used for thousands of years to channel sexual energy. I have another article of Spiritual Sex which is the opposite of abstinence. Anyone who claims ‘there is only path is, don’t believe anything else’ is not in touch with the fluidity of life (in fact, it’s the ego that makes them think that they know the one only and true path). There’s many spiritual paths, some more suited to some people than others.

Any true spiritual path is inclusive of all experiences and all paths, because truth lies outside of the realm of body and mind, so whether celibacy or sexual expression, they both are still attached and fixated with the body, truth is beyond both but can be reached via either.

Kabbalah doesn’t attach sex to soul because sexuality is counter intuitive & roots deeply in the Nefesh. Women were regarded as animals because of it until receiving the Torah into their lives. The naive factor lends the evil inclination to prevail. This would be the critical error of many marriages that fail.

Spirituality is not sexuality. Sex may feel like it because of the hormone dump & the reward effect. Sex can create addictions, possession & disappointments. Expectation is always in the back glow of sex.

Sexuality has little difficulty in creating autoerotic symbols that outside the right intention will lend to vanity & lust. Beautiful women are easily seduced by the wicked. Many get emotionally ruined & their children suffer for their sins.

Art, fashion & porn are all destroyers of the soul. No good had ever become from any of that.

Both vanity & lust enslave a person’s desires. This causes loss of providence & life force.

No higher soul will ever result form sex.

The erotic imagery provided in this artical would cast much dissonance to what was written here.

Tantric sex causes premature ejection in men by the way.

Thank you Jack for sharing your thoughts.

In my experience, spirituality (one not based on religious doctrine) is inclusive of everything, the idea of unity and oneness is accepting of everything. In fact, sex itself is why we exist, it’s the origin of life itself. But I agree that sex has been quite corrupted, and this is what distinguishes it from ‘making love’ which requires more presence, more beingness, less of that ‘animalistic reactive sex’.

This is where we tend to throw out the baby with the bathwater, sex is abused and misused by people (from rape to porn) but it doesn’t make sex innately bad. It’s like saying junk food is not healthy and because it’s a food, all other food is suspicious by default. What we see in porn, in abusing sex, is not reflective of love making, though it lends itself to it in the wrong hands.

Art being not good for the soul is something else I would disagree with. True art has a way of absorbing you into its beauty, listening to a divinely inspired poem has a way of making you feel the essence of God within and around you, the same can be said for music, painting and scrulture (I’d recommend everyone to read Irving Stone books ‘Lust for Life’ and ‘The Agony and The Ecstasy’ that illustrates art almost as a spiritual path.)

Is there any legit data sources to backup the ‘trantric sex causes presumature ejaculation’ statement?

The only thing art does is to provoke or stimulate emotions.

Would you consider mathematics art? It is artful & intellectual. But most wouldn’t call it art for the lack of emotion.

Sensual stimulation is not “light” of love but merely a situation to where lovers became physically cohesive.

True soul has no stimulation other that light & wisdom.

Emotion is often used for it’s natural conveniences & is largely taken for granted.

People tend to waist creative energy with trivial self seeking or serving endeavors that circle back to vanity. That being the comparitive host to ones ideological view. This is the type wisdom Isaiah would’ve warned about.

A psychophysiological response is a triggered somatic perception not of the heart. It’s an emoto process the body senses without the need for the eyes to see.

I have experienced patients who could see beyond walls & speak in languages not common to present times, it’s all done by emotional conduit.

Emotionality is very limiting to see what the eyes cannot.

Sensing something & knowing it would be quite different.

Sexuality is extremely limiting to the intellect so much that the most pious prefer abstaining form it.

Improper use of emotion will tie down a soul to that of an animal.

“The only thing art does is to provoke or stimulate emotions.”

When we speak of ’emotions’ in such a disconnected way, almost as if their subjective experience is meaningless, this is a reflection of our own disconnection. True, fully embodied spirituality, includes everything part of the human experience (rather than dissects it into parts.) That’s the essence of ‘wholeness’ and ‘unity’ which is what defines the spiritual experience.

Mathematics is a type of art, but I wouldn’t consider it art that has the ability to create the ‘awe’ inspiring effect other art forms have (it’s much more mind centered), it’s in that ‘awe’ of wonder, that opening to existence, that the spiritual abides in.

Lovemaking is beyond just ‘physically cohesive’, it starts off that way but in the flow of experience, of energy, it becomes the doorway to something more. Again, this is dissecting the subjective experience and trying to diminish it through an objective lens.

But I can see this really doesn’t get us anywhere. What is being discussed here is an experiential path through sexuality (or in the transmutation case, an abstinence/lack of sexuality.) It can’t be dissected and explained with objective words like some philosophy thesis, one has or is willing to experience it or not.

The fact that such ancient paths as Tantra (pre-Buddhism) and Taoism have branches that use sexual energy to awaken Spirit, and that there’s countless people including myself who’ve experienced its value speaks for itself. Ultimately this isn’t claiming absolute truth, it’s another tool that some may find useful when the time is right.

Sex is waay over rated, waay over studied to death, way over analyzed. I find aviation, writing, bicycling and other creative pursuits to be **far** more fulfilling, a simple conversation with a true friend. you can have “spiritual sex” with someone then they cut you out of their life. Here’s to growing older and cycling!!

Thanks dl for sharing your thoughts. I’ve found over the years that not all sex is the same, when we really experience it with someone we surrender too fully in vulnerability and make it playful, it can be an experience like no other.

But I do agree in our culture this type of experience can be abused, like anything else. It’s such an obvious ‘high intensity’ experience itself very obvious and hard to ignore, therefore everyone seeks it (sometimes even in a self-destructive way). Growing older, writing etc are all wonderful pursuits, though they require a more subtly nuanced perception to appreciate them. Everything has its place and time :)

I do not believe we are all sexual beings. Maybe humanity as a whole, but as individuals, we are vastly different, and many of us do not have sexual desire at all. Just because we are human, does not need we need to have sex to be whole. Remember that.

      Hello there,
I have come to understand my sexuality at the age of 30. I used to feel like i was weird because i do not really care for sex. LMFAO .. I mean dont get me wrong sex is beautiful it is passionate in which you become at a still moment in time where you can feel the heat the fire and love with such grace and desire comfortable with skin on skin electricity its pretty darn sexy.. Sacred
Love which ive felt before it is different from just having sex to have a good time. After a fallout with my person (merp ),, i was.in no way having sexual relations at all and one day i thought everyone else do it i can too i had a one night stand i hated the way i ft ashamed and guilty for it. As if i was giving my self my private self my gift of woman to some foool LMAO some nobody a stranger. So my point is i am fine not having sex as i am still single. I have three children which my mind is too focused everywhere but sex. I guess i do not desire it. And now a days as it is just another good time sex is a topic in a first time conversation . In my opinion connection and compassion naked truth literally at its bare is what makes sex so beautiful that i am willing to hold off until my body whispers otherwise.
