This test was originally created by Hungarian psychiatrist Leopold Szondi in 1935. Szondi believed that it was possible to reveal the dark and repressed impulses within us simply by the aversion we show towards certain people.
Each of the eight photos is supposed to reveal a hidden aspect of the human psyche, revealing the psychological drives and tendencies that we unknowingly carry inside. These latent impulses were repressed in childhood because they were deemed inappropriate, โbad,โ or somehow socially unacceptable in the environment we grew up in.
The Szondi test operates on the principle that we are inherently attracted or repulsed by people who are similar to us. So pay careful attention to each mental patient and the โfaceโ they give to the repressed impulse potentially within you!
Terms You Need to Know
The following psychological terms will show up in your result. Iโve included a simple explanation of what each means:
Repression: This is a psychological defense mechanism that prevents us from feeling emotions or impulses that we believe are wrong, โbadโ or unacceptable. Repression occurs when we push down a character trait, feeling, habit, or desire into our unconscious mind so that we are no longer consciously aware of it.
Denial: The practice of completely refusing to accept the reality of something within us such as a habit, trait, feeling, impulse, or desire. Denial can be either conscious or unconscious (i.e. weโre not aware of it), and in an attempt to further protect ourselves, we may adopt the opposite behavior of what we have repressed.
How to Take This Test
Look at the portraits of the people below and choose ONE person who you would NOT like to meet walking down a dark alley at night. Go with whatever person gives you the creeps, disturbs you, or generates fear or disgust within you.
Important Note
Please donโt misunderstand your result: it does not imply that you have a mental illness. Instead, approach your result with the perspective that this could be a potentially repressed impulse within your psyche.
The original Szondi test had six sets of eight portraits, but this test presents a simplified version.

Sadist. Very interesting considering I indentified as a masochist for years. Oddly enough, my experience in bdsm has taught me to empathize with sadists, perhaps out of necessity (avoiding cognitive dissonance).
The only reason I chose that face is because it was the only one turned away (as if indicating ulterior motives or an unwillingness to face the truth), but perhaps that is by design? To reflect passive aggressiveness?
Passive aggressiveness is one of my biggest pet-peeves. Perhaps in truth because a part of me struggles not to be passive agressive and face confrontation directly. I do feel I’ve genuinely gotten better at that with age though.
Then again, the first portrait also reminded me of a real person I knew who was legitimately a creep. So there might be some subconscious associations at play that skew the results. I fear this test might make too many assumptions about *why* a person finds the face disturbing, without the ability to factor out random variables.
Still interesting introspection, nonetheless.
I can’t take it because ads are in the way.
Wow! I really wish i could have read the results… unfortunately after closing and attempting to remove the google ads, windows stating that the ad was removed by google, remained in front of the content. So i answered the question. And repeatedly tried to read the results, but i guess i never will get to read the tips for how to deal with my repressed depressive state! THANKS GOOGLE, you are officially of significantly less benefit than strife. Closing this window and switching browsers!
Your test does not let you select a number due to ads. Cannot scroll down. Might want to fix that. Namaste
Isolation, was confirming for me as the result was one I am aware of, funnily enough the images gaze reminded me of my mother. I also loved your spiritual interpretation of Abundance which came in the email with this test, not the grab, greed one so often given.
I didn’t take the test as I none gave me the creeps or disturbed me. Ithink they are just perfect looking normal people and would smile at them if I meet them in a dark alley. What does that mean?
Repression: If the soft and youthful face of this man repulsed you, you might be repressing fear surrounding your sexuality or gender identity. As a child, you may have been bullied, defamed, or traumatized by a parent, teacher or family member in a way that made you question your right to be accepted by members of the opposite sex.
I have no problem of gender identity & have never questioned my sexual orientation. Nor have I ever been bullied, defamed, or traumatized to ever make me feel this way. Your answer to my statement is I am in denial. So be it…you’re entitled to your opinion.
Denial: You are a person who likes to emphasize your gender role by being excessively masculine or excessively feminine. For instance, if youโre a male, you might be overly โmachoโ and if you are a female you might like asserting your femininity by being flirty, sexy, or unnecessarily submissive.
Very wrong on both counts. I love psychotherapy. It’s never been an exact science. Not everybody has mental issues. I think I’ll take some of those other tests. This should be interesting.
Wow, this was scary accurate. How can just one image of our choice reveal so much about oneself. I picked three of them. 8, 5 and number 3.
Honestly, I love to take these tests, but this one was way off the mark for me. I selected 4 different types and none of them seem to fit me in any way.
I’ve come to hate anger so much ever since I was a child, I would get beat whenever I express my frustration whenever my parents lash out on me when I never did anything.
I don’t know what unconditional love is. Ever since I was a child, I would be passive-aggressively treated, emotionally threatened like if you do this, I’ll , beat up whenever I showed any sign of resistance.
I now struggle with avoiding anger. I feel as if I could snap at any moment in a fit of rage.
Please help me, I really need it.
I want to leave my house but where will I go? I’m just 17 years old
Poltergeist – Hope I can help. Ever thought about doing some sort of martial arts? Krav Maga is something I have a little experience with and you’d probably match it pretty well while learning self-defense techniques simultaneously.
