In shamanic thought there are three realms in which the guiding spirits of life inhabit. Animals inhabit the second realm, or the middle world here on earth.
Since the dawn of time, animal spirit guides have been summoned to help us learn vital lessons, make important decisions, and grow significantly at a soulful level. From the Native American Indians and their totem animals, to the animistic beliefs of indigenous Africa, India, Asia, and South America, animals have been revered for hundreds of thousands of years.
According to the philosophy of totemism, all of us have at least one spiritual connection to another physical being such as a particular animal or plant species.
Discovering what physical being in this dimension you have a connection with can be difficult and confusing. However, there are certain methods out there that will help you to invoke or summon your animal spirit guide – and you’ll discover one of the simplest methods here today.
Finding Your Animal Spirit Guides
One of the best things about using essential oils to summon your animal spirit guides is that it is not only really easy to do, but it also psychologically prepares you for such an experience. Like a ritual, finding, preparing, and diffusing essential oils primes up your unconscious mind and makes you ready to receive your spirit animal’s presence in your life and any lessons they have to bring.
Also, before you attempt to summon your spirit animal, be aware that you might not have any need for an animal spirit guide in your life right now. As I mentioned before, there are three different spiritual realms, and your spirit guide might be in the upper or lower realm (as opposed to the middle realm). Please read this article to get an idea of the other types of spirit guides out there.
However, if you are struggling with issues to do with the world, for example; a lack of courage, resolve, compassion, direction, empathy, meaning, connection, or other problems such as financial instability, job confusion, family drama, relationship strife, and so forth, you should read through the info below.
Here are some instructions:
- Carefully read through each essential oil and corresponding animal and species below.
- Pay attention to your emotional, physical and/or mental reactions to each species and scent. For example, if you feel strangely drawn to one, pay attention! This could be an intuitive signal.
- If none of the oils or species particularly “speak” to you, dedicate one week to each group. For example, diffuse only one type of essential oil in the afternoon, and pay attention to your dreams and visions during meditation afterwards. Repeat this process until you feel drawn towards a particular species or animal.
Tips: The best way to authentically summon your spirit guide is to start this process without desires and expectations of what they “should” look like or “be” like. Often our spirit guides are completely unexpected – and certainly not as glamorous as we hoped they would be. For example, don’t summon your spirit guide assuming that it will be a member of the wolf family, as this might not actually be the case. Yes, wolves are very attractive, powerful and mystical, but your totem might actually be an otter, falcon, or salamander instead.
Also, I recommend diffusing your essential oil in the afternoon, as this is the time of the day when we tend to relax the most. Pay attention to the animals that appear in your dreams, and the visions that appear to you during meditation, as well as the frequent appearance of any particular species throughout your day. All of these signals could be subtle clues.
Finally, be patient! Animal spirit guides sometimes take a while to reveal themselves to you. But sincerity, honesty and persistence will almost always guarantee their appearance.

What scents are you interested in using to summon your spirit guides? Thanks to this process, I’ve recently uncovered the Gorilla as my middle world spirit guide. All I used were a few drops of pine oil in an oil diffuser I found in a thrift store for $1, and a bit of patience. Now I’ve discovered an area of my life I need to work on: balancing interpersonal assertiveness with gentleness.
I’m excited to hear what you discover!
