Existential Dread: 7 Ways to Regain Sanity and Peace

True story: my first word as a baby was โ€œno.โ€ One of my favorite series of books as a child was A Series of Unfortunate Events. Iโ€™ve woken up quite a few times with a voice of dread in my head saying, โ€œOh great, Iโ€™m on this planet again.โ€ And, well, I run this website for spiritual outsiders and wanderers called lonerwolf for chrissakes.

Donโ€™t worry, Iโ€™m not depressed. Iโ€™m just very well acquainted with the sensation of existential dread.

Image of a grumpy baby with text over the topic saying "Believed cycle of suffering and reincarnation was over. Got born."

Cute and grumpy baby memes aside, the fact that youโ€™re here, reading this, is completely understandable.

Spiritual Wanderer Course:

Being a lone wolf and a spiritual wanderer is a sacred calling in life โ€“ a unique and alchemical path of awakening. You donโ€™t need to feel lost, alone, or stuck on your journey any more. Itโ€™s time to meet your soulโ€™s deep needs for clarity, self-acceptance, and empowerment. Let us show you how โ€ฆ

Climate change. Wars. Pandemics. Mental health crises. Financial inequality. Increased costs of living. Housing shortages. The rise of toxic individualism. Deforestation. Animal farming. Soil degradation. Polluted water and genetically modified foods. Rampant consumerism. Late-stage capitalism. Corrupt governments. Ecosystem collapses. The fact that experts say weโ€™re living in the sixth mass extinction โ€ฆ

I mean, if youโ€™re not feeling some level of existential dread, I donโ€™t know what rock youโ€™re living underneath or what social media-induced self-reinforcing bubble youโ€™re in, but the fact is that things kind of suck right now badly.

Why Having Existential Dread is NORMAL

Image of a man standing in a dark tunnel holding up a light

Being socially maladjusted and feeling anxious, depressed, or sickened on some level right now, being on this planet, isnโ€™t just a normal response but a healthy reaction.

In the words of Indian philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti,ย

It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.

So what are we to do with all this existential dread we carry?ย

Should we descend into self-centered anarchy and nihilism? Should we go the opposite extreme and become bigoted fundamentalists or tribalists seeking to recreate a sense of superficial safety? Should we collapse in on ourselves and throw up our arms, weeping in despair?

While it may be tempting to do that, I propose a different approach founded on ancient wisdom, which weโ€™ll explore in this article.

What is Existential Dread?

Image of a woman lying down underneath a full body veil symbolic of feeling oppressed and weighed down

Existential dread, also known as existential angst or existential anxiety, is the feeling of distress and overwhelm we experience when we are faced with forces that are greater than our capacity to solve or alleviate.ย

Existential dread can produce feelings of anxiety, persistent worry, grief, and sometimes deep-seated terror. These feelings can come and go relatively quickly, or they can accompany us almost everywhere, forming the backdrop of experiences such as the existential crisis or Dark Night of the Soul.

โ€œThe World is Burning and Everyone’s Gonna Die!โ€ โ€“ Examples of Existential Dread

Image of the painting 'the scream'
“The Scream” by Edvard Munch โ€“ a man who clearly knows the precise meaning of existential crisis. ;)

Here are some examples of existential dread to illustrate it better:

  • Feeling existential dread when contemplating the climate crisis and how future generations are actually going to thrive or survive.
  • Feeling existential dread when waking up in the morning to commute to a job that you hate only to make a minimum wage and barely get by while contemplating the purpose of your life.
  • Feeling existential dread when realizing that you or your loved ones could die at any time for any reason.
  • Feeling existential dread when diagnosed with a serious health condition and contemplating your own death, as well as reassessing the choices youโ€™ve made in life and being plagued by feelings of regret.
  • Feeling existential dread when observing the gluttonous consumerism of humanity for which you have very little capacity to fully change quickly, that is rapidly destroying the planet on which we all depend and are inextricably connected.

Are there any examples of existential dread from your own life that youโ€™d like to share that are not mentioned above? Feel free to leave a comment below. Sometimes, naming what we feel can be quite therapeutic.ย

13 Existential Dread Signsย

Image of a person trapped behind glass symbolic of the existential crisis

Not sure if youโ€™re experiencing existential dread or not? Hereโ€™s a simple list of signs:

Would you like to save this?

We'll email this article to you, so you can come back to it later!

Your information will never be shared.

  1. You lack a sense of motivation in your daily life, and you canโ€™t be bothered to do or achieve much.
  2. You often feel emotionally drained or burned out, and therefore, you feel sensitive, touchy, or otherwise numb around others.
  3. You lack a feeling of optimism or hope and instead feel cynical and empty inside.
  4. You feel like an aimless wanderer in life without purpose or a sense of direction.
  5. When you think about the future, thereโ€™s not much that excites you.
  6. You feel impotent and overwhelmed with emotions such as fear or despair when you contemplate the state of the planet and society.
  7. You have addictive tendencies such as using social media too much, overeating, overspending, excessive drinking, etc., to avoid your existential dread.ย
  8. You have a tendency to โ€˜doom scrollโ€™ on social media and get sucked into negative comments and news spirals, which further reinforces your painful feelings and mental state.
  9. Your mind tends to race quickly, and you often have catastrophic thoughts.
  10. You have poor sleep quality, and you often wake up feeling a sense of dread or a wave of anxiety.
  11. You feel intensely separate from others, find it hard to relate to those around you, and are stuck in an isolated bubble.
  12. Youโ€™re intensely aware of your mortality and the fragility of life, which causes feelings of powerlessness and sadness.
  13. You struggle with a sense of existential loneliness and separation from the divine (also known as soul loss).

When prolonged, existential dread can often turn into existential depression, especially if youโ€™ve experienced some kind of shock or trauma in your life, like the death of a loved one, a relationship breakdown, the loss of a job, poverty, war, or some other crisis.

Existential Dread and Spiritual Awakening โ€“ The Hidden Giftsย

Image of a hand reaching out to the light

I remember experiencing existential dread so badly that even just sitting in a car would invoke catastrophic realizations that at any immanent moment, all my loved ones and I could die โ€“ or take a walk in the park without fearing that Iโ€™d catch a debilitating sickness (thanks COVID).

Iโ€™m sure youโ€™ve experienced similar thoughts and feelings too.

But hereโ€™s the thing: existential dread can be a blessing in disguise because it shakes us out of the monotonous stupor of day-to-day life.ย

When seen through the lens of opportunity, the pain of existential dread shakes us to awaken us. It asks us to pay attention, live more consciously, and search for that which most deeply calls to our hearts and souls.ย

If you were only ever to exist in a mediocrely โ€œokayโ€ state of unawareness, you wouldnโ€™t be inspired to quit that soul-sucking job, make more compassionate decisions for the planet, or go searching for deeper explanations and alternative paths away from the established norm that positively transform your life.

Existential dread is often the precursor to having a spiritual awakening where, like Neo in The Matrix, we begin to sense that something is โ€œoffโ€ in our lives.ย

Weโ€™re then inspired to go soul searching outside of the matrix-like system weโ€™re born into, heal deep wounds, rediscover our gifts, and awaken to the mystical reality of who we truly are beneath the ego.

But for there to be a spark of awareness, there must often be some form of pain first, and it must be sufficiently large enough to prompt us to leave our comfortable but constricting bubblesโ€“ and thatโ€™s the role that existential dread plays.

Existential Dread: 7 Ways to Regain Sanity and Peace

Image of a pink lotus flower in the murky pond symbolic of awakening from existential dread

Lonerwolf is a space that can paradoxically help you not feel so alone โ€“ especially existentially and spiritually.ย

As I said before, feeling existential dread is a normal and healthy human reaction to the pain and destruction ravaging the world these days. Anyone who tries to convince you otherwise is either delusional, emotionally numb beyond comprehension, psychopathically uncaring, or trying to sell you something.

If youโ€™re experiencing existential dread and want to regain some level of sanity and peace, here are seven suggestions based on personal experience and gathered from the wisdom of our cross-cultural ancestors:

1. Logotherapy โ€“ Find the Meaning in Your Existential Dread

Image of a man holding a lantern in the twilight

Thereโ€™s so much information these days on the โ€œsix steps to success,โ€ โ€œhow to be a successful soulpreneur,โ€ the โ€œquantum masterclass certification program in finding happiness,โ€ yadda yadda yadda.

When I get overwhelmed with information, I go back to first principles. I look to the past to tried and tested philosophies, teachings, and spiritual practices that have stood the test of time.

One of those is logotherapy, created by someone I fully trust in helping me to navigate through my existential dread, which was holocaust survivor, doctor, and psychiatrist Viktor Frankl.

Illumination Books Bundle cover

Illumination Books Bundle:

โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ "I loved this book! I have been on my spiritual journey for some years and it showed me that i am not alone, that all what i am going through itโ€™s not crazy, that there is nothing wrong with me, on the contrary! The book is deep and yet very easy to read. It goes right to the point. It gave me strength to continue..." - Eva

I wonโ€™t go into the story of Frankl, as you can look that up yourself. But he essentially developed a school of psychotherapy which was put to the test in the fires of hell (Nazi concentration camps), and it confirmed that those who were focused on fulfilling a meaning in life were more likely to survive.ย

Logotherapy means โ€œhealing through meaningโ€ in Greek, and it encourages us to find the deeper meaning in our painful life experiences โ€“ in this case, in our existential dread.ย

In the words of Frankl in his book Manโ€™s Search For Meaning,ย

Those who have a ‘why’ to live, can bear with almost any ‘how’.

And also:

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedomsโ€”to choose oneโ€™s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose oneโ€™s own way.

Meaning can be found through creation (creating something and sending it out into the world), experience (pursuing experiences like truth, beauty, goodness, love), and attitudes (choosing how we see the world). (Source)

Some logotherapy-ish questions you can ask yourself or journal about are:ย

  • Whatโ€™s the greater purpose behind this pain?
  • What is the hidden opportunity in this suffering?
  • How can I transform these feelings and create something beautiful from them that can help others?

I encourage you to keep looking into logotherapy if youโ€™re interested in going deeper. The book Manโ€™s Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl is a good place to start.

2. Choose the path of the Bodhisattva

Image of the buddha in front of two candles

One of the first tenets of Buddhism is that โ€œlife is suffering.โ€ If you experience existential dread, that will be blatantly obvious by now!ย

Thankfully, within Buddhism โ€“ which can be either a secular philosophy or a religious path, depending on which road you choose โ€“ thereโ€™s a beautiful term known as the โ€˜bodhisattva.โ€™

In the words of my favorite Buddhist teacher and Zen master, Thich Nhat Hanh,

A bodhisattva is someone who has compassion within himself or herself and who is able to make another person smile or help someone suffer less. Every one of us is capable of this.

Now, more than ever, we need more bodhisattvas on this planet. There are enough depressed, nihilistic, cynical people already, which is valid.

But we need people courageous enough to choose a path of heart, a path of active kindness toward others.

In the words of yoga and meditation instructor Sara-Mai Conway,

In Mahayana Buddhism, the bodhisattva is someone who has taken a vow to put others first. Ordinarily, we are self-centered beings. We tend to think of ourselves first, and weโ€™re primarily concerned with our own happiness, gain, and fame โ€ฆ But with daily meditation, we develop a greater sense of compassion that widens as our wisdom increases. We discover true happiness comes from ensuring the happiness of others and that, just like us, everyone only wants to be free from their pain. As we heal ourselves, we naturally become inclined to want to heal others.

Experiencing existential dread gives us a first-hand experience of the kind of pain that others undergo as well โ€“ it helps us to be truly compassionate and understanding and can be the motivation to adopt a bodhisattva path (which overlaps with the idea of being a โ€˜lightworkerโ€™ in modern spiritual lingo).

I recommend my article on 7 Signs Youโ€™re a Bodhisattva In-the-Making if youโ€™d like to go deeper into this path.

Shadow Self Test image

Other practices to cope with or transform existential dread:

3. Explore the philosophy of Stoicism (not to be confused with the lower case โ€˜stoicism,โ€™ which is all about being unemotional and stiff-lipped, which Stoicism as a philosophy isnโ€™t about), which can help you to access more inner strength, find peace in the middle of emotional and mental chaos, cultivate virtuous qualities, use death as a compass for living, and focus on what you can control and accept what you canโ€™t.

4. See from a greater vantage point by challenging your mental spirals by identifying cognitive distortions. Common cognitive distortions (aka., twisted and negatively biased ways of thinking) include jumping to conclusions, catastrophizing, mental filtering, polarized thinking, and overgeneralization. Search for โ€œcognitive distortions pdfโ€ on your web browser, and youโ€™ll find some great resources and examples to work with. You can also see my “toxic core beliefs” article for additional insight.

5. Orient to joy through the practice of mindfulness. Here, we have a mixture of somatic psychology and Eastern spiritual practice. Orienting to joy in a mindful way helps to soothe the nervous system, which takes you out of the ramped-up fight, flight, fawn, or freeze response and into the rest, relax, and digest mode of being. Make a habit each day out of deliberately looking for ten things that bring you joy. Journal about them or simply note them throughout your day. Even the tiniest things can be a source of gratitude, like a bird call or a drop of water in a puddle (and being grateful is scientifically proven to have humongous mental health benefits).ย

6. Create space in your life, set social media boundaries, and stop doom scrolling. This point is self-explanatory. Doom scrolling does nothing good for your mental or emotional health, so just stop, okay? You can still stay up to date with the news (if you want low stimulus and low clickbaity news, see Wikipedia’s homepage). Ensure that you create space and make time to relax, maybe with a soothing hobby, instead of wasting that time filling your head with sensationalist comments and news stories. Remember that negativity appeals to our reptilian brains that look out for threats, and therefore, it sells โ€“ positive stories are not as popular, and therefore, theyโ€™re ignored and largely left out of the news. But they do exist. The following subreddits are great places for feel-good content: r/MadeMeSmile, r/UpliftingNews, r/GoodDeedOfTheDay, and r/HumansBeingBros.

7. Express how you feel and let it out. Keeping all that existential dread pent up inside ainโ€™t good for you. So find a way to let it out, whether through journaling, creating art, singing, doing a form of full-body catharsis, or talking to someone you trust if thatโ€™s accessible to you right now. Do it! Youโ€™ll feel something shift within you, and it can help you regain a semblance of sanity and peace again, even just a little.ย

I recommend re-reading through parts of this article and really taking it in. Iโ€™m serious โ€“ this isnโ€™t meant to be a 15-second TikTok clip that you just watch, discard, and move on from quickly. I mean, you could do that. But it would be a pity, as thereโ€™s so much guidance that can be potentially life-shifting here.ย

Once youโ€™ve re-read and revisited some of what Iโ€™ve shared above, you have the option to keep exploring elsewhere in your own way. Or, you might like to keep exploring here.ย

โ€“ Mihรกly Csรญkszentmihรกlyi

Existential dread is something we all suffer and face at some point in life. We are all in the same boat here, and the experience of existential angst is a shared human experience. So, letโ€™s normalize it!ย

Iโ€™ve presented numerous powerful practical, philosophical, and spiritual approaches in this article that can help you cope with or transmute existential dread. Please go back and revisit them to decide where you want to get started.

Although there is much to feel unsettled by, there is also much to be grateful for, and there is, as Viktor Frankl put it, the last of human freedoms, to choose our mindset and our own path ahead.ย ย

What advice would you give someone else suffering existential dread? This is an opportunity to transform your pain into power and give back in a life-enhancing way โ€“ so share some words of insight in the comments below!ย

I am struggling to define existential dread for myself bc i think iโ€™ve always been in it :) like fish in water. Plant medicines ceremony woke me up from the โ€œok/ unaware/ mediocreโ€ life into positive desintegration, where my identity fell apart, role after role. And i was plunged into a 2-year emptiness practice. Emptiness meditation is not for the weak of heart, you keep dying dailyโ€ฆ Trust in the Universe/ God (the process?) and consistent spiritual practice were my anchor. I am emerging now and starting to see the why.

Ii have just been diagnosed with bowel cancer, i have done exactly as mentioned as above, look suffering in the eye and acknowledge its presence, the nurses and docs look at me in a confused way as i have shown no emotion towards it and just want to get done what needs to be done, then i can get back to some kind of normality.

My advice to someone suffering existential dread in the moment – in the form of a quote: “Have Faith. Always choose to have/feel Faith. God/the Universe is always there. It is all around you, it is you. You ARE the Divine. So just have Faith.” (And don’t forget to take a deep breath every now and then… :)
And one more infamous quote to support this: “Everything turns out ok in the end. If it’s not quite ok, then it’s not the end yet.”
Blessings, love and compassion and understanding to all!

Dear Aletheia, thanks for this amazing article. I absolutely loved the humor, openness and authenticity in it. It feels good to know I am not alone in the feeling. As an introverted HSP I spend a lot of time under a rock, except when I have to go to work ๏ปฟ๐Ÿ˜‰๏ปฟ. And one of the reasons is all the sad and terrible things happening in the world. I don’t watch the news, leasten to the radio or read a newspaper. My husband sometimes lifts up my rock and gives me an update ๏ปฟ๐Ÿ˜…๏ปฟ. I will definitely check out the book from Viktor Frankl. Great choice of quotes as well, they really resonated with me.
Something I do myself and can really recommend to others is asking yourself 3 questions at the end of the day. I do this while laying in bed and it helps me fall asleep. 1: what did I learn today? (this could be anything from how to repare my bike to a handy trick in Excel). 2. what am I proud of? (that you made a healthy meal or had a good talk with your partner). 3. what am I greateful for? (this could be something small as having a comfy bed to lay in, having hot running water, heard a nice song. Or something bigger as having good friends or a nice job).
Thanks again and indeed: an article to reread and reread again ๏ปฟโค๏ปฟ

I can relate to the drive to live under a rock as an introverted HSP as well (I guess my use of Reddit at times kind of undermines that, though!). And I love those questions! I ask myself the last one, but I might incorporate the others thanks to you ๐Ÿ˜Š

I totally loved this post. I would like to add another resource that, along with ideas from Viktor Frankl, Stoicism and Buddism, has helped me a lot to overcome this natural state. It is a philosophy that I can totally label as “The philosophy of happiness and self-fulfillment”: Ayn Rand’s Objectivism.

      Thanks so much Rut!
I don’t quite resonate with Rand’s philosophies (especially the pure individualistic self-interest part of it), but if it helps someone else in a genuinely beneficial way, then that’s great. Go for it. :)

Hello I didn’t read through the whole thing just because I had a thought. I am completely nihilistic so a lot of things really don’t bother me. But, and I mean no disrespect, but people like me have never got experience love and being with someone. So those who are not “aware” of issues are really trying to hope that they get to experience something good. I mean, I have been through hell and all I ever wanted was to find someone I feel deeply connected to in order to share intimacy. I feel a lot of people who write about the world have already got to experience something so beautiful. A lot of people who talk about “self-love” are in relationships! My point is, is if a deep desire is manifested it’s easier to talk about “self-love” and “world problems”. So please don’t dismiss them as “having a false safe bubble” around them. You guys get to experience it. Like I said, I mean no disrespect but nobody has said it.

      Hi Christopher,
I’m not sure I quite understand the gist of what you’re saying. Some people who talk about self-love are in relationships, yes. But not all. I learned how to develop some level of self-love before I was ever in a relationship. In fact, I think developing self-love was what helped me to enter one in the first place. However, it’s also true that sometimes it’s easier to develop self-love when we have love mirrored back to us. In this case, if it’s accessible to you, I know that counselors and therapists can provide that loving mirror (I know that some of mine did), so I recommend finding one that you resonate with if that’s of interest. I also don’t understand the part where you say, “So please donโ€™t dismiss them as โ€œhaving a false safe bubbleโ€ around them.” Can you please clarify this?

Hey I appreciate your response. I paraphrased it how I interpreted it but when you said “social media induced self-reinforcing bubble” I thought you meant people create a false sense of “everything is good”, bypassing if you will. I was saying, in my case and to speak for others that may feel the same way, I acknowledge what’s going on but don’t feel a whole lot about it and part of that is because if the world is crumbling it makes it hard to meet people. For example, I moved to LA late 2019 and I wanted to meet someone I felt deeply connected with. And I felt happy and definitely had love for myself, but when the pandemic came it annihilated my plans to meet someone. I was going to go out and try new things and boom. Then afterwards every time I tried to meet someone, everyone I encountered had someone already. Just saying that so you can see my perspective a bit better. I do thank you for caring.

My existential dread is often dealing with fears.

If I have done enough to assist both of us in providing health and life.
Also, worry that we have reached the tipping point in old age not having resolved childhood issues enough to be accepted by others as adults.
And is it too late for us anyway to change, clear, and open up to new age principles in our time of life?
Feel blocked and frustrated about what I consider my near future. Feel like I have completed all the things I wanted to do. Now too many no-win situations. too old. too tired, too sickly, too lethargic to bother as too much is happening to the World.
    ………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
Need a solid framework to build upon Spiritual growth out of the above negativity starting with Inner Child Meditation to change the subconscious fear patterns and let my inner child feel as you say safe and wanted.

    Perhaps you can help? ๏ปฟ๐Ÿ˜Ž๏ปฟ

I hear you, John. It must be quite demoralizing to feel that way, as with age, I can see that energy dwindles and, with that, a lot of other things. But willpower is a force to be reckoned with. If you have the inner impulse to keep going, you will. I know of an 80-year-old woman who still has so much willpower surrounding her garden that she often does the work of a 30-year-old. So the question is, do you still want to keep going? That’s totally up to you. But for a solid framework, you have quite a few in this article, such as logotherapy, Stoicism, or the Buddhist philosophy of walking the path of the bodhisattva. Have you looked into the work of Thich Nhat Hanh? He has talked about the inner child before, as well as bodhisttavahood. Please go check out his work, and the other paths mentioned here.

I love your site! The issue is an order I place for the Dark Night of the Soul Journal. I can’t access the digital format. Have sent several requests for help with this and received no reply. Thatโ€™s why I am trying this. Please help or refund me!

Thanks Skye for kind words, and I’m sorry to hear you’re experiencing an issue. I’ve checked out support email’s inbox and can’t locate any emails from you. Did you send your email to shop@lonerwolf.com?

Usually issues with accessing the files are related to one of three things: 1) Your email provider (msn) blocking the links or corrupting the files. 2) Your browser doing the same or 3) The device itself.

      Please try the following:
      1) Download the file directly from the “Downloads” section one you login to the https://shop.lonerwolf.com/my-account/ . Downloading from your account within our site instead of your email with avoid MSN blocking the files
      2) Try using a different browser or device.
      3) Be sure to use Adobe Reader: https://get.adobe.com/reader/ which is free on all devices or a similar PDF viewer app (FoxIt Reader is another) that is able to open Interactive PDF files.

Let me know if you continue to have an issue, and send detailed info to shop@lonerwolf.com for them to help you through it.

Holly molly this hit a nerve! Very important topic!! The west is going downhill and it’s globalism that destroyed the west or even this planet not capitalism. A balanced capitalistic system with government regulations can work fine. Countries like Japan are capitalistic and homogenous and one of the safest countries in this world. I always felt good and more at peace there. Coming back to west europe was like getting punched in the face. You forgot to mention overpopulation. 1 of our biggest problems. And AI or technology as well. Y’all need to read Ted K. manifest. I’m not condemning violence but he was right. Keep in mind he was active during the 80s and 90s!!! When globalism wasn’t even fully active. I appreciate your article a lot but i disagree with the spiritual aspect. We need action. People need to stand up and do something. Otherwise it will only get worse

Thanks for your insights and shares.
I agree that people need to stand up and do things, but that can come in a variety of ways. Spirituality and action can (and do) go hand-in-hand โ€“ and besides, who’s to say that taking on an activist role itself isn’t a spiritual act? Spirituality is inherent in all of life, not just in one small area, in a tiny compartmentalized box. I also think it’s a misconception that all spiritual approaches are only passive (think the monk meditating in the monastery). In fact, there are many spiritual folks taking action (one of my favorite movements is engaged Buddhism for that reason). The roots of the strife we see in this world are internal. Trying to force change onto the external world hasn’t achieved much except more pain. Spirituality teaches that the deepest answers and solutions are found within and then can be shared without.
      Best wishes

A very good example of how the cohexistence of spirituality and action is able to produce effective results can be found in my opinion in the life of Swami Vivekananda, just to name one. I read his biography and found it really inspiring!
