Spiritual ascension (or spiritual awakening) is one of many major topics out there which can become confusing very quickly. Everyone seems to have a different understanding of what spiritual ascension means. The plethora of information out there doesn’t help: it can make you quite disoriented in a short amount of time. Personally, I believe that almost all definitions of spiritual ascension are right because it is an exquisitely multi-layered concept and experience that cannot be shoved into a box that easily.
That being said, it does help to categorize and label the different aspects of spiritual ascension so that we can understand them better – and that is my intention for this article.
What I am going to share below is based on my own experience, insight, and observation of myself and other people. You’re welcome to redefine or add to this list however you see fit in the comments.
What is Spiritual Ascension?
Spiritual ascension, also known as spiritual awakening, is a natural evolutionary process which involves the process of shedding the old self and experiencing an inner rebirth. Many people speak about spiritual ascension in terms of being “upgraded,” “rebooted” or being elevated in vibrational frequency. All of these terms are a way of referring to the inner evolution and expansion of the mind, heart, or soul. As the name implies, spiritual ascension is about reaching new heights and transcending old limiting habits, beliefs, mindsets, and ways of being.
Spiritual ascension, however, is not all angels, unicorns, and roses. It is often accompanied by severe and shocking shifts that result in what is called the Dark Night of the Soul. (I elaborate on these dark experiences in my book The Spiritual Awakening Process.)
5 Types of Spiritual Ascension
Spiritual ascension (or spiritual awakening) is mentioned a lot in spiritual circles. Everyone has a slightly different definition. But every interpretation can, more or less, fit into the following five categories:
1. Awakening of the Mind
This type of awakening comes when you experience a major epiphany or sudden mental realization. This deep understanding does not necessarily translate to integrated experience, but it does feel like an astonishing flash of ‘enlightened’ perspective that can help you mentally understand life.

How to know if you have experienced one: Have you ever experienced that sudden ‘click’ when a piece of information/word/synchronicity falls into a larger puzzle? This is called a mental awakening. And often such realizations stay with us, motivating and inspiring profound changes in our lives.
2. Awakening of a New Personality
When mental awakenings are consistent and go deep enough, over a period of time they can result in the development of a new personality. This type of transformation and ascension involves cutting away and moving past old limiting and toxic patterns and developing qualities such as self-acceptance, empowerment, and understanding. While this type of awakening isn’t as deep as say, a soul awakening, it is nonetheless still vital on the spiritual path.
How to know if you have experienced one: Think back to the kind of person you were one to three years ago. Are you still pretty much the same person? Or have you made some major life-enhancing positive shifts? If you think you’ve changed (in a good way), you’ve likely experienced a personality awakening. This type of awakening is caused when previously repressed, ignored or shunned parts of the personality have been integrated to create more wholeness.
3. Awakening of Spiritual Energy
‘Spiritual ascension’ can sometimes refer to awakening spiritual energy within the body and energy field. When life force energy (commonly referred to as qi, prana, or kundalini energy) is awakened, major changes can occur on the physical through the spiritual levels. Ancient practices such as tai chi, yoga, meditation, and tantra, help to awaken this energy, but sometimes life force energy awakens spontaneously. This sudden activation is called a Kundalini Awakening, which enters the realms of the soul and total awakening (see the next two types below).
How to know if you have experienced one: An awakening of spiritual energy can feel mild all the way to extreme. (And when I say extreme, I mean intensely overwhelming and often too much to bear.) Common signs of an awakening of spiritual energy involve feelings of enhanced vitality and energy on the physical level, energy rushes, tingling and electrical feelings throughout the body, changes in sexual libido, sharpened awareness, and feelings of cosmic interconnectedness. Negative symptoms can also arise (for the uninitiated) such as mood swings, mania, physical hypersensitivity, insomnia, seizures, loss of appetite or overeating, extreme and scary altered states of consciousness – just to name a few.
4. Awakening of the Soul
Soul awakenings can be brief and sudden, or long and drawn out. Brief soul awakenings are often referred to in Zen Buddhism as ‘Satori’ which is the experience of seeing into one’s true eternal nature. This glimpse of enlightenment is often short and doesn’t last very long (one moment to a few days). On the other hand, long-term soul awakenings are experienced as a deepening of contact with one’s Soul. This could involve consistently uniting with one’s soul purpose, spirit guides, or higher self and thereby understanding and beginning to experience oneself as Eternal and Limitless.
How to know if you have experienced one: Have you ever had a moment in which you felt the division between yourself and the World disintegrate? Have you ever shifted from the ego-perspective to the universal-perspective? Have you experienced any moments where you’ve felt deeply aligned with your life purpose? These are all signs of a soul awakening. Developing virtuous qualities such as compassion, tolerance, forgiveness, and unconditional love also accompany soul awakenings.
5. Total Awakening (Enlightenment)
Enlightenment, or total ego death, is a rare experience in which the ‘self’ dissolves and all that remains is Unity With All. This state is called by many names: Oneness, moksha, non-dual awareness, Buddhahood, illumination, and so forth. Such an intense state of being can arrive spontaneously or through years of spiritual study and discipline – but in both instances, total awakening is a gift of grace, it isn’t something that we can “achieve” in the normal sense of the word. When enlightenment occurs, there is an experience of being both nothing and everything all at once; it is a state that transcends thought and the mind itself, it is a Mystical Awakening. The ego is finally seen, understood, and overcome, and all that remains is the Pure Awareness, Presence, Love, and Truth.

As we can see, spiritual ascension comes in many different shapes and sizes, with the ultimate form of ascension culminating as Total Awakening, self-realization or enlightenment.

My case wasn’t one to wish on anyone and at the same time wish everyone could go through it.
When my ego died, it wasn’t peaceful….no, my death almost took my shell with it. I remember going through all the stages of this that you mention…but the one thing I’ll never forget was when my shadow self started to break free from its chains…
I kept getting angrier, hostile, bitter and just downright suidical without a choice.
I would black out in rage moments but I remember this feeling like an electrical pulse shooting up my spine and into my brain and then lights out…what I did when I blacked out I never remembered.
Then came the dark night of the soul and this went on for so long I can only describe 2017 as the whole dark night of the soul…
I remember thinking that the pulse of electricity was a demon and he had possessed me to protect me from harm…I remember thinking that it was my only friend and the only one I could count on to have my back. I had no one but a demon to rely on and that’s truly what I believed…
It wasn’t until I got through my dark night that I realized the demon was my shadow self….I suffered so intense, but I’d go back and do it all again if I could. Was the best thing to ever happen to me…. although re entering society and trying to sound like I’m normal is something that’s very hard to do now.
I have recently experienced something inexplicable in my current vocabulary. It started with a great depression and manic episodes. Quickly switching through my emotional spectrum like changing channels on the TV. I experienced an extreme interconnected feeling of oneness in the world, heightened senses, a massive new outlook on life, a new found intellect, hunger for knowledge, and above all else, if I try to disect my experiences into mundane speech to explain, confusion.
Medical teams want to diagnose me with mental illnesses, which I am respectful of their professionial opinions and aware of my medical state, which has been deemed healthy.
Above this experience I am aware that I am not special, that every human has the abilities to experience this, and that we all long to be lifted.
Currently I am somewhat scared of my new self awareness. I am still not sure of what I’m experiencing. It’s all new to me.
While I am totally intersted in these articles, they are enlightening to read, I also understand the metaphorical meanings throughout our universe and am taking extreme diligence to care of my own safety and those around me. I am also aware of what people would like to label me and my experiences as, and am careful as to not allow others to simply stuff me into their box of understanding. At the same time, I am aware of what is true, and what presents itself to me as delusional thinking.
It’s a scary, yet exciting new path to be on. Glad to be able to share.
Since my birth I every 7 years have had an awakening of sorts. huge turmoil , many close figures change, life in general changes. This is my 49th year. I have studied on chakras and spiritual maturity and kundalini awakening( which it sounds like that was an experience about at my 14-15 year and it was very dramatic . I assumed it to be the christian idea of being saved at the time.It seems very young for the kundalini awakening I have started to study Buddhism because I am going through something and I am having somewhat of a struggle grasping onto it. my peer group is beginning to change among other things that normally happen at my 7 th year but this is more. thats what brought me to your web site. I am looking for some clarity on this 7 year cycle because it is different. any insight would be appreciated. thank you

I have personaly experienced all the stages personally starting from childhood with mystical experiences which were a little scary.. It always felt like death and dreaded going to bed during the peak of such mystc activities which began as dreams falling frim trees, drawning in water and so forth or trying to still my mind to get to sleep. by age 12 I had partly lost that fear and by the time I was 18 I was effortlessly fearless though this question of whom I am and fear of fate of death intensified and tried searching for meaning. That is when I started loosing interest in materialistic life and struggled embracing a simple life that landed me in almost a careerless university degree and miserable grades and escaped being discontinued by a whisker. Had complete illumination at age 23 as a third year student.. the tragedy of thinking I was running mad, white light, a quck preview of my present life present before me like a rewinded tape with motion pictures on a screen and the confussion and excitment of where those memories were coming from as they did not come from my conscious memory and the feeling of worthlessness and having wasted my precious time on worthless persuits.. To mske the long storry short I managed completing my 4 yr course but did nt set everything straight to graduate. i.used the two years for self aunthenticity and soul search after the terrific grasp by the cosmic force whose preceeding effects were an upsurge in crwativity and the dreaded heighted mystical experiences and lucid dreaming and dual existancrme and arial view sight. the sweat lucid dreams vanished after several months and that drove me back to church to repent in order for the lucid dreams and little comforts to come back but it never worked. It took me almost a year to ever come to understand the dsrk night of the soul. The illuminative experiences later came back with meditative and contepletive effects on me but also came along with tragedy as i lost my brother and basking in the golden rays and rumis and other great souls made me feel nothing about the grief in the family and that made me at odds with the family ever since. A life of solitary struggle untill this present moment is the fate of my destiny as it is almost imposible enlightening souls already trapped in material illusions of mortal life more so the educated masses. franz Hartman Emmerson, H. P Blavastkey have Rumi M. Tole Jacob Bohme and st John on the cross have been myvfevorite authers to draw consolation from among other likes. Some moments suicidal thoughts have creeped into my mind but now I am grown to face the tragedy of being the “black sheep” in the family and the non-comformist in society because I grelieve no more having been only an object of manifestarion of some higher power (soul) within me, always ready to let go of mortal life if ever demanded by the devine self…. kingdom of God within and ‘ ye must first die before you can live’ as Jesus put it are things that have taken me a great time to percive and ” I shall speak to you and ye shall hear not” the fate of the crucified messenger………
Thank you for an interesting article. You mentioned negative aspects of an awakening of spiritual energy that can affect the uninitiated. How can one transcend these negative aspects?
The key issue is “transcend”, the perception that we need to go beyond those aspects only furthers their intensity as we don’t learn to listen or deal with them.
To heal those symptoms we must ‘initiate’ ourselves, we do so by treating our spiritual awakening more seriously and dedicating more time to your Soul work.

In number 4 you mentioned the shifting from ego perspective to universal perspective. I had an experience that went the other way around. I witnessed how “I” was formed. Was that “wrong”? What was it in your opinion?
The ability to be the “observer” of the “I” formation is still part of the universal perspective.
Ask yourself, who is it that is watching this “I” form? Clearly it can’t be an ego perspective because that would mean you would be identifying with that “I” rather than ‘watching it’ (which is the conscious observer, the universal perspective).

I have a question and I’m not certain if it fits number four’s Spiritual awakening & contact with guide’s or if it is something else entirely although I had asked something of my guide’s before falling asleep on the night this took place. You two (Luna&sol)read to be well versed in the Spiritual and I enjoy your articals and ideas on a variety of topics very much,so I am hopeful you may have some insight on what I experienced~ Last year around Oct/Nov . I ended my evening in meditation I planned a bit of astral projection and asked my guide’s for my life’s purpose / life path to be revealed as I had begun to feel uncertain as to what I need to be doing here~ It was later that night I awoke to a sensation of my arm going numb and feeling off so I readjusted it and fell back asleep later I awoke to a pulling sensation at the center of my forehead as I slowly opened my eyes I saw a large spherical blanket of soft white light and within it were 4 quadrants with glyphs,symbols,and mathmatical equations kind of like this (+)~ and on the top “sides “if you will and bottom it had four smaller spheres but these layed down (and I remember wondering why because the whole looked alive and vibrant but these looked sad and wilting almost , layed over as they were)it was beautiful however and I propped myself up for a better look it wasn’t my first time encountering something unexplainable but never anything like this this felt like a glimpse in to the Universe. I rubbed my eyes thinking is this real? and it was still there hovering about 2 feet from the ground I understood that it was intelligent and very special and then I felt…. fear -the very second I felt fearful it whooshed away out of existence at such an incredidible speed and then it was gone I was left staring in to a night draped room. The very next morning I researched and found what is called a Merkaba which is said to be the vehicle of ascension which I am led to believe that is what I encountered yet none looked like what I witnessed.I can’t find anyone else who has experienced this and I’m trying to understand the significance though I know I’ll never remember or even be able to decipher the language but I just want to understand any help or insight or knowledge about what this was would be greatly appreciated Thank you,Lucy
