15 Signs You’ve Experienced Altered States of Consciousness

“Altered states of consciousness” sounds like something from a cheesy 80’s sci-fi movie or a trip down the rabbit hole of Alice in Wonderland.

But each and every day you and I enter into altered states of consciousness.

Whenever you get transfixed by a screen (aka. your phone or the TV) and dream at night, you enter into an altered state of consciousness.

However, at some point in life, most of us have a bizarre – or even frightening – experience that we can’t quite explain.

Sometimes, these strange experiences are actually blissful and ecstatic. And other times, these odd undergoings are a mixture of both joy and pain.

Have you ever gone through something that blew your mind and temporarily shattered your reality, but you’ve never really understood why it happened or what it meant?

What you’ve likely experienced was, in the words of mythologist Joseph Campbell, a “Call to Adventure” or call to walk your one and true life path and find the meaning of life.

What is an Altered State of Consciousness?

Image of a golden fractal representing an altered state of consciousness

Altered states of consciousness (ASC), also known as a non-ordinary state of being, occurs when we temporarily access a state of mind that isn’t usually available to us. Altered states can be either deliberately stimulated or may occur randomly and without warning.

Types of Altered States of Consciousness

Image of a mysterious shamanic landscape

There are a number of different types of altered states of consciousness out there. Some examples include:

  • Drug-induced hallucinogenic or psychedelic states
  • Hypnotic states
  • Meditative states
  • Out-of-body experiences (OBE)
  • Alien abductions
  • Shamanic trances
  • Yogic states (e.g., Siddhis)
  • Lucid dreaming
  • Psychosis (mental illness)
  • Mystical experiences

Causes of Altered States of Consciousness

Image of a woman having an out of body astral altered state of consciousness

An encounter with unfathomable beauty, terminal illness, or any extreme of human experience might induce a sudden shift in consciousness, a sacred knowing. But perhaps more commonly, states of non-ordinary perception are first entered with practice— meditation, prayer, chant, trance dance—or perhaps with a sacramental entheogen such as peyote, psilocybin mushrooms, or ayahuasca.

— Joanna Macy

  • Sensory deprivation (e.g., float tanks)
  • Impaired sleep
  • Fasting
  • Breathwork (e.g., holotropic)
  • Prayer
  • Astral projection
  • Entheogenic drugs (e.g., LSD, Mescaline, Ayahuasca, etc.)
  • Near-death experiences
  • Hypnosis and trance states
  • Deep states of meditation
  • Ego death
  • Kundalini awakening
  • Shamanic or spiritual healing

This list isn’t exhaustive, but these causes may give you an idea of what triggered your own altered state of consciousness.

15 Signs You’ve Had an Altered State of Consciousness

Image of a woman experiencing a kundalini altered states of consciousness

As defined by psychologist and shamanic teacher Christa Mackinnon, there are a number of different signs that you’ve experienced an altered state of consciousness.

How many of these signs can you relate to?

  1. Time distortion (time slows down or speeds up)
  2. Altered sense of body (you may feel disconnected from your body or hyper-tuned into different parts of it)
  3. Increased focus or narrowed perception (you are hyper-aware of some part of your reality or experience)
  4. Visionary experiences (symbols and imagery, often of an archetypal nature, come to mind)
  5. Reduced internal dialogue (i.e., the ‘monkey mind’ or inner narrator turns off)
  6. Amnesia or hypermnesia (that is, memory loss, or conversely, detailed recollection and remembering of past events)
  7. Suggestibility (an increase in being open to suggestions)
  8. Catalepsy (muscle stiffness and fixed posture)
  9. Age regression or progression (accessing past self or creation of future self)
  10. Analgesia or anaesthesia (reduced feeling in body, i.e., numbness)
  11. Intense relaxation or activation (i.e., feeling extremely calm or extremely afraid)
  12. Dissociation (feeling disconnected from one’s thoughts, feelings, and sense of self)

Other signs that I’m adding to this list include:

  1. Ability to access deeper insight (epiphanies, revelations)
  2. Access to flow states (i.e.,”being in the zone,” intense attunement to the present moment)
  3. Big picture perspective (i.e., ability to make new connections and see from a “bird’s eye view”)

Do you need to have experienced all of these signs to have undergone an altered state of consciousness experience? No. Some of these signs may apply to you, and some won’t. That’s normal and okay.

This list is also not exhaustive, so keep that in mind.

Why Do We Experience Altered States?

Image of a man experiencing an entheogen psychedelic altered state of consciousness

Now that you have an expanded understanding of altered states of consciousness, you might be wondering “WHY?”

Why go through such an experience? What’s the purpose? What’s the point?

There are various explanations out there ranging from depressing to mediocre to cosmically “wow!”

For instance, many traditionally-trained psychologists and psychiatrists would assign many types of altered states of consciousness to merely being a form of pathology – a mental illness.

Would you like to save this?

We'll email this article to you, so you can come back to it later!

Your information will never be shared.

Others explain altered states as neurological misfirings of synapses or chemical imbalances in the brain.

And still, others believe that altered states of consciousness are always and only ever signs that you’ve “entered alternate universes,” “upgraded your DNA,” “cleansed your etheric energy field,” and other such new age explanations.

My stance is that there’s no black or white explanation. Yes, some altered states may be due to trauma and mental illness, and others may be neurological impairments. Perhaps it is possible to communicate with aliens or enter alternate universes.

But overall, it’s my conviction that altered states of consciousness are meaningful and often pivotal points in a person’s life. They possess deep value and are ripe with insight and the possibility for personal transformation. Often, such non-ordinary states set in motion a necessary existential crisis.

In this way, I believe that many altered states are “calls to adventure” to take a closer look at our lives, work through our inner wounds, and reconnect with our souls.

At the core of altered states of consciousness is a move to be more Soul-centered.

Altered States of Consciousness as a Path of Soul Initiation

Image of a man reaching out toward the sun

Most altered states of consciousness throughout history can be found in a religious or spiritual context.

Whether it is the trance-inducing Sufi dancing, the chanting of Hindus, the deep prayer of Christians, the meditative practices of Buddhists, or the sacramental ingestion of entheogens like peyote in Native American ceremonies, altered states have always been valued as sacred.

There are three main reasons why altered states of consciousness have been seen throughout the centuries as sacred:

  1. They shift us out of the small and narrow ego-self into the big and expansive Core Self.
  2. They enable us access to deep self-understanding and consequent self-transformation.
  3. They empower us to spiritually evolve.

In the words of depth psychologist Bill Plotkin,

… a conversation with soul is not likely within the defended confines of ordinary consciousness. The conscious self must look at its own psyche from a different perspective, from a unique angle, from a position of altered awareness, like viewing earth from outer space, or returning home after a month in an exotic culture. Most soul-encounter practices induce liminal states of temporary ego dissolution that release us from the usual rules and norms of our personality and culture, opening the way to fresh observations and creative adventures.

Altered states gift us with the ability to temporarily exit the straightjacket of the constricted and conditioned self and access a higher (or deeper) vantage point.

We all have an animating spark of life, a core essence, an authentic Self – and for those of us who are lost and don’t know how to find that inner Center anymore, altered states are the pathway to illumination.

In fact, I’d go so far as to say, in many cases, that the Soul drives us toward or even triggers altered states of consciousness to beckon us “back home” via soul searching – back to our true path.

Why Are Altered States Sometimes Terrifying?

Image of a woman experiencing a spiritual hallucinogenic drug trip

If altered states are so positive and are signs of spiritual awakening, why are they sometimes horrific – even terrifying?

My answer is that altered states are sometimes frightening because they can bring us face-to-face with our mortality, biggest wounds, and greatest fears.

Sometimes altered states are the product of, or produce themselves, trauma. A PTSD veteran, for instance, may enter an altered state whenever they hear a gunshot on TV. A schizophrenic person may enter a period of psychosis, which is an altered state.

Some altered states, it seems, are the result of a traumatized self (or ego) trying to piece itself back together.

Another reason why altered states may be terrifying – this time in those who are otherwise mentally sound – is that the ego doesn’t feel prepared to access higher realms of consciousness (as can be seen amongst those who have blissful mystical Oneness experiences and the like).

If you’ve ever observed (or been one of those) people who have taken an entheogenic drug, you’ll notice that one’s mental state is everything.

Those who are in a state of fear, mistrust, and resistance to life often end up having “bad trips.” Whereas those who let go, trust, and allow the ego-self to subside, end up having joyous and euphoric experiences.

In essence, one’s mental state is everything when it comes to altered states of consciousness.

How Do I Make the Most of My Altered State Experience?

Image of calm and serene waters

Going into an altered state is nothing weird. You do it all the time. The question is whether you use the altered state to produce change, and if so, how are you going to use it?

– Richard Bandler

We go into altered states of consciousness every day, but there are some altered states that can’t be ignored. They must be integrated – or transferred into your life in a meaningful way. Without integration, such profound experiences will miss out on unveiling their innate, precious, and rare powers.

Here are some simple ways you can make the most of your altered state of consciousness experience:

  1. Journal about it. Ask yourself the following questions: “What was the experience like and what may have triggered it?” “What part of the experience stood out the most to me?” “What might the deeper meaning of this experience be?”
  2. Draw it. Drawing engages the right hemisphere of your brain and engages a more subconscious, creative, and emotion-centered form of wisdom. Draw the experience (and don’t think too much about it!). You may choose to create a scene-by-scene image, or one single image that summarizes the whole experience. Reflect on it afterward. What words, images, or realizations come to mind?
  3. Find a practical application. Having a non-ordinary state of consciousness is all fine and dandy. But the true value in that experience is how it translates into your daily life and lived experience. In other words, what practical changes can you make? How can you use your experience to help others, achieve your dreams, or walk a path that feels true to you? Be pragmatic and ground your experience in reality.

Takeaway

Image of a psychedelic blue fractal pattern

Altered states of consciousness can feel cosmic, horrific, eerie, otherworldly, hyper-real, or peaceful depending on your state of mind and ego receptivity.

But regardless of what triggered them, such intense experiences are powerful forms of Soul initiation – they can be seen as invitations from your deeper Self to awaken and evolve.

When approached consciously, altered states can be used to reorient you to your true calling in life. They can break you out of the fog of lethargy, self-centredness, narrow-mindedness, and sleep-walking that the ego-self is prone to falling into.

As sage and psychoanalyst Carl Jung commented about altered states, “the sacred makes claims on you.” In other words, altered states of consciousness are often experienced without us choosing them.

And sure, while being thrown into the stratosphere of non-ordinary consciousness may be totally scary and confusing, it also plays the role of humbling us – it helps us to see that Life is so much larger than us. Existence is so Mysterious. And consequently, a sense of sacredness can re-enter our domesticated lives.

We can reconnect with our Souls.

I was least expecting to experience such a state but I suddenly heard a girl’s voice sweetly chuckling and saw an image of a profile of a woman with long hair playing a recorder with the lower half of her body immersed in the sea just for a second. I’d just heard of biophoton and had an idea that we are light. So I thought it convinced me I was right. Also my body is moved by an invisible being when I let it by just relaxing my muscles just a little bit, and I am able to do automatic writing a little. I don’t feel my consciousness is altered at all, though.
    Thank you.

Hi Hamod. I can’t say for sure, but your experience sounds like what Jung would call ‘active imagination’ – perhaps that voice is part of your higher Self?

I saw the individuals at no way related. “They” we’re in a hyper state of euphoria. I saw the individuals, three different people at threee separate occasions, pore less, beautiful, illuminating from within. I intentionally intently looked at this manifestation of a spiritual self thru my eyes! It was amazing and I actually am remembering one more, myself. As I was dying. I saw myself as that way. Poreless. Spiritually shining from within. Like a diamond in the rough. All FOUR of us. Hmmm. Strange indeed. Lol.
Anyway. It was strange and I don’t see them much any longer. I don’t even look at myself. I was resuscitated and brought back into this world three times. Thank you for letting me share. I do t tell many. Don’t know why I am now.

I had this experience fairly recently while I was high on weed. However, it’s something that I think has been pulling me towards it even before I actually ‘realised’ it in terms of human consciousness. It was my birthday and I was high and talking about some really mind bending things like how timelessness is a paradox and how the universe has a property of bringing itself into existence rathar than a purposeful act that it does. It was like, it’s a universe, of course it’ll bring itself into existence. And other stuff like how the universe itself is trying to find out more about itself (the whole is consciousness and sentience an emergent property or is it inherently built-in into the universe). In any case I was talking about a lot of really mind bending stuff that was blowing my mind as well because I was thinking about where is all this coming from? And eventually came to this state or phase (hard to describe) like – at the boundary where my imagination, subconscious and my consciousness meet (maybe?) And it was inside of me and I was in front of a door. At least it was a door initially, kept on changing the material it was made out of and the structure. And I ‘knew’ that I wanted to open it. I don’t know what’s on the other side and didn’t feel any fear or apprehension, but there was an intense urge to unlock that door (if it was locked at all) and then gradually my focus shifted from the ‘door’ itself to what the door was attached to. Like what is this structure or construct or if the door is a door at all or if locking/unlocking even mattered within that construct. The best way to visually describe it would be like a white space/corridor with just a single door in front of me. I know how crazy I sound but I’ve been trying to research because I want to unlock that door or at least know what’s on the other side. So, yeah. That’s my experience. Any guidance would be really appreciated.

Interesting. Have you tried journaling about the experience Raunak? You could even enter back into the memory of that experience via visualization and have a dialogue with the situation (it’s also known as active imagination). Maybe explore, what did the door symbolize? What was behind the door? What colors, feelings, memories, or senses stood out to you? No one can really give you a definitive answer – your own psyche is the ultimate authority in this instance.

Thanks for reading my experience. It’s really hard to describe it innwords but I have been journaling and even that’s unusual because, it just feels like this the right thing to do. As far as I have thought about it, it’s an emotionless state that’s not numb and there’s an intense feeling of curiosity. It is as if the “door/construct” wants to be explored as much as I want to explore it. I specifically use the word ‘want’ because there’s no compulsion. This altered state is a point of divergence where I can choose to let it be or explore it, wherever that journey leads me. However, I have a hypothesis that the real objective of this experience was not the door at all, it was the space (I call it the construct) and it feels like a space where I can do things that might somehow alter my version/experience of reality. But it definitely feels like a powerful place of creation. Something removed from the good vs bad binary. I know it’s me ranting but I’m trying to discover this and thought maybe I could reach out to others. Because I want to explore that, I don’t have or need to or have any urge to use it for something. Just a feeling in the gut that feels very obviously right.
        Regards,
        Raunak

One day at the Art School I decided to experiment with what I thought to be just marijuana to let out some tension and have a smoke and go for a short walk to a park near to the School. After the smoke, I felt just a little lightheaded and slightly out of balance, and thought little of the experience as just me high on weed. Then as I walked out of the premises and onto the street, I started to experience a bounce in my step and a floatiness within myself. I seemed to bounce or float within my shoes and legs and just glided down the street. As I entered the park everything around me seemed to have a force or energy of its own, especially the nearby gum trees. As I approached each one and came close, a sense of suction seemed to draw me close and pull me in towards the upward forces within the tree. At first, I had fear as if I would lose essential parts of myself in this force, so I pulled away from it a little and then came close again. The experience was very real as energies were magnetically pulled off me and bent towards the tree trunk. It was as if I was not a static human any longer, but a free-flowing creature as if on fire with energy, bending and swaying to the elemental forces around me.
To this day the experience stays with me as both a lesson/adventure/ spiritual growth, as part of the artistic culture of that time, and will be a peak experience with me forever.

    Conclusion
As an artist, you learn to appreciate the drills of understanding the basics of line, form, volume, texture, and design to place within limited space concepts of your own creation into play. Which can take many years of work to evolve both your own version of life and creation to appear real.
So when you get a peak experience like that which is stated above, it lasts for all time.

I’ve seen static move. It struck me as dangerous and unsure of itself. It was moving around and it went to a tree trunk and vanished. I say a shaoeshifting or a frequency that had no channel

Well, I am autistic. I have Asperger’s Syndrome. In some ways, I live several of those signs of ASC every day. Even when I was younger, I instinctively knew how to astral project and still do occasionally to this day. I know I have been places in this universe that I dont have with which to describe them adequately. But I feel them deeply in my soul. Some were terrifying, other were beautiful and serene beyond belief. The latter are most common for me. The terrifying ones usually occur during times of intense distress or emotional and physical upheaval that I was not prepared for. But all of my experiences have been enlightening in different ways.

The correlation of autism and altered states of consciousness is something I’ve never contemplated before. I’m not autistic myself, but my brother is, and now I wonder if he has experienced anything similar to what you have described. In any case, these experiences sounded mystical and illuminating. Thank you for speaking about them here. :)

    Hi,
Actually, except in dreams, I am still struggling to voluntarily getting ASC, by using shaman drums and music, breath work. Practical objetives would be better performance of healing (hands-on healing over person photography, etc), which I believe (based on Shamanism, Bill Bengston’s method for cures, and many other anedotic cases – in Dwason Church’s books, for instance) is more effective when one’s conscious get out of the way of the process of transfering energy and/or information.

I stumbled across this post by serendipity. I just had an out of body experience yesterday when a lot of my family friends came to visit me, and here I read about why did that could have happened. Everything around me was moving so slowly, I actually haven’t had an out of body experience for quite a few months. Thank you so much for uploading such an insightful post. Blessed be )O(

Hi Luna and Sol, I am a long time reader who had an out-of-body experience just last week. Like the last commenter I also feel a sense of serendipity, since this article was the next one I received from you. The episode happened while I was sitting on exposed rock at the top of a hill during sunset. The most terrifying thing about this was being fully conscious, essentially blind to my surroundings with zero sense of direction, and feeling like I would fall over and smash my head on the rock. During it I was able to repeatedly nudge myself in the right direction to keep myself upright until it was over (5-10 seconds?). The adrenaline from the terror was the overwhelming physical feeling afterwards.

But I’m having difficulty processing the less terrifying parts of what actually happened, and journaling about it is an awesome suggestion I just stated on. Thank you as always for your compassion!

Almost two years ago I went to Peru to do Ayahuaca. In my second ceremony I lost my body completely and entered a world where I was first just the thoughts in my mind and then I slowly pealed away from those thoughts and became the witness.. I just existed and believed I had died. I remember not being worried about myself after mydeath but more about the people I was leaving behind. I have, not a thought memory but a sense memory of being in a place of absolute peace. It felt like a womb. I came back to my body shortly after that. There was so much
energy vibrating through me after that and I felt I was left open some how. I went home and tried to resume my normal life but something felt off. A deep vibration began in my lower body and moved its way up.. Three months after peru i had what I can only now begin to describe as a kundalini awakening. My fear and my egos unwillingness made it terrifying at times with only brief moments of bliss. For months I lived with derealization.. I called it enlightenment but scary.. Two years out from the start of this experience and I’ve followed a spiritual path as best as I can and listened to my inner knowing while navigating my healing process.. I’m still trying to make sense of all this. No one else, that i know of, experienced this after the ceremony in Peru. I contacted the center and they said this does happen to 1 in 10 people. All i know is that i am changed and each day is another step on my healing journey towards really embodying the things ive learned though all of this.

Hope, that does sound like an intense experience! I hope you’re finding more groundedness and stability now. I’ve had experiences on plant medicine as well that were extremely destabilizing – some can take years to integrate. It’s important to reach out to others for support as well if it ever gets too intense. I’m not sure if you’ve read the article I wrote on kundalini awakening, but it might help if you haven’t seen it: https://lonerwolf.com/kundalini-awakening/

Hey Bob. “The most terrifying thing about this was being fully conscious, essentially blind to my surroundings with zero sense of direction, and feeling like I would fall over and smash my head on the rock. ” – that is a strange paradox, being fully conscious, but at the same time being blind to your surroundings. I’d definitely reflect and journal about this experience more!

Thanks for sharing here Gratias. Wow. How were you feeling? If you felt overwhelmed and anxious by the experience, it may have been a state of dissociation or derealization. Lots of love
