The Enneagram is a fascinating model of the human psyche. Everyone should take the test at least once in their lifetime!

    Dark Night Journal image

Used in therapy, business, and self-development circles, the Enneagram is a powerful tool that can increase your self-awareness, empower you with self-understanding, and increase your self-love.

The Enneagram is also a highly psycho-spiritual model (meaning that it caters to human psychology and spirituality) that can support you on your spiritual journey.

Get ready to learn about your deepest strengths, weaknesses, and gifts in our free enneagram test!

    How Does the Enneagram Work?

Image of the enneagram test symbol

The word ‘enneagram’ is composed of the two Greek words ennéa (meaning nine) and grámma (meaning something written). And that is the crux of the enneagram: it reveals the nature of the human personality by dividing it into nine different archetypes.

The interesting thing about the Enneagram is that it possesses a number of different facets that help us to identify:

    (1) what we desire more than anything else,(2) what we value the most, (3) what tempts us the most, (4) what causes us the most fear, (5) what our biggest fault is, (6) what our greatest virtue is.

Our enneagram test (bottom of page) will help you to identify these different facets and what you need to pay attention to.

    The 9 Enneagram Types

    Enneagram Test image

    The nine Enneagram types include:

    • Type 1 – The Reformer
    • Type 2 – The Giver
    • Type 3 – The Performer
    • Type 4 – The Individualist
    • Type 5 – The Observer
    • Type 6 – The Loyalist
    • Type 7 – The Idealist
    • Type 8 – The Challenger
    • Type 9 – The Peacemaker

It is common to find a little bit of yourself in all nine Enneagram types. However, one or two of them should stand out for you as revealed by this enneagram test. These are your dominant personality types.

How Understanding the Enneagram Could Transform Your Life

The Enneagram Typology was first conceptualized by the mystic Gurdjieff and developed further by Oscar Ichazo and psychiatrist Claudio Naranjo.

There are several reasons why understanding your Enneagram type is so helpful:

    • It helps you to become more objectively aware of your personality “blind spots”
    • It assists you in developing more self-love by helping you to understand yourself more
    • It encourages you to consciously work on parts of your personality that inhibit your ability to live a harmonious life
    • It allows you to develop more awareness of your “higher self” (Soul) by deconstructing your personality

Keep in mind that the Enneagram is more of a system of transformation than a means of labeling and identification. Perhaps the most amazing thing about the Enneagram is that it encourages the development and liberation of the Soul underneath.

    Enneagram and Spiritual Awakening

Image of a leaf with sunlight peeking through

The power of the enneagram lies in its ability to lead us to higher awareness. By helping us to understand the root of our fixations and various neurosis, we learn about our ego structure and where it broke off from Divine consciousness (called the ‘Holy Idea’). We also learn what quality we need to develop in order to deepen our spiritual awakening journey.

In his Enneagram book Facets of Unity, A. H. Almaas writes,

The … view of the Enneagram is that each ennea-type fixation is the expression of a limited mental perspective on reality, and that each of the nine egoic perspectives is the direct result of the loss or absence of the enlightened perception of one of the Holy Ideas … Working with the Enneagram as part of a larger spiritual work, however, leads to a much deeper realization of truth and thus, a freedom from personality patterns.

Oops 100 percent I even call myself Plato from junior school. I also love Joan, Mandela, Confucius and ghandi. I’m a teacher (well loved by students and parents. But hated by the society and the leaders).. I am unionist and an advocate of truth and justice. Very defiant and vocal. I m a perfectionist with few friends and even women fear loving me. I’m a soccer legend yet no one wants to touch me because they think I’m too full of myself but I’m just not interested in mediocre things. I believe in the perfect thing up there to be attained. God even to me needs further definitions according to my holy perfection idea. I don’t trust anyone around me I give wholly. I don’t start battles I funsh them I don’t start arguments I kill them with one word. I join a party people gather around me and praise me but disperse immediately because they can’t see my appreciation because I don’t want to show it.

I have consistently been a type 1 – Perfectionist/Reformer. wing 9. Which is definitely my primary. I struggle with perfectionism, despite my logic (or me talking around it via ego). I know that it keeps me from expressing myself fully and authentically…but it is a constant journey that I am working on and for myself. I’ve recently taken on a couple of new ventures out of my comfort zone and every day is a slow crawl to keep it at bay. To not go into the false SELF or let fear/ego override. Yoga and meditation – this site and podcasts have been very helpful. I remind myself to live As Is and to Be who I Be in the world As Is. When the idea of perfectionism, starts knocking a quote that is helping is “be brave enough to be bad at something new.” I thank you for all your work and knowledge that you both offer to the world <3

Thank you Steffani for listening to that deeper part of you that has the courage to follow through regardless of that voice of fear. I’ve always reminded myself it’s better to fail than to never try, and failures provide new information for next time, so it’s more of a game of perseverance than being ‘good’ at something in our first attempt. All the best :)

I too struggled with the idea of perfection, but it’s truly excellence we seek. Perfection is solely within the individual, because my perception of perfect is not the same as another. Think about the golf ball, it’s not perfectly round or smooth. It’s designed with all those symmetrical divots to help carry it further and more accurately than a perfectly round ball without any imperfections. Like me, the golf ball is perfect with all it’s imperfections.. striving for perfection will lead to never being really satisfied with your results and potentially the beginning of doubting yourself. Perfectionism is exhausting and becomes frustrating if you find yourself thinking about the details.. Maybe this isn’t a problem or something that you have issues with, but for me it was liberating to see perfection as only my idea of something, but it’s not something that others would give a second look at and say to themselves, that’s a perfect example of a wall or perfect hairstyle, not one hair is out of place.. not sure many people are able to see past their own problems or whatever situation they are currently dealing with.. hope this helps or benefits another in some way, thank you..

I am an individualist which makes sense. I am an only child and do feel I suffered a trauma of abandonment around the age of 4. Melancholy is my friend. I recently went through an awakening which lead me to realize how I struggle with feelings of self worth. I am working through the need to seek out the origin of everything.

Each time I get to the end of the Enneagram test, it jumps to another page and I lose my answers and get no results.

I’m sorry to hear that Rachel, have you tried a different device and are you clicking any links outside the test questions/answers? There shouldn’t be any reason for redirection and I haven’t seen anyone else experience this.

Wow. Enneagram is all I’ve been hearing for the past 2 months from someone who has recently come into my space. What does this all mean? I came across your website some years ago and I put it away, now I’m drawn back to it and so many things are jumping out at me.

My personality type came up as ‘The Perfectionist’ which describes me perfectly. I really need help letting go of this trait. It causes me so much distress and so much tension. I constantly overthink things and feel such tension and uneasiness in my mind and body when things are not perfect. Even a picture on a wall. If it’s not perfectly straight or centered, it bothers me a great deal. I’m also soo hard on myself ALL the time. Right now I’m struggling with letting go of a ‘mistake’ I made a few years ago. Only problem is, it’s permanent and will be with me the rest of my life. Therefore, I HAVE to come to terms with it and FULLY let it go. I’m struggling with this a lot. I don’t want to live this way anymore. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Marcy! My personality type is “The Perfectionist” as well. Reading your comment broke my heart. I want you to know that it’s not easy forgiving yourself, especially something permanent. Those things haunt you, and no matter what you do to take it back, you can’t. Everything you wrote resinated with me on a deep level. I have had to forgive myself. Guilt and shame are killers of the soul. I don’t know if I can help, but just know you aren’t alone. What has helped me is meditating (when I do…sometimes I’m not the best at consistency) and talking. Talk about your story. Treat yourself like you would treat a friend. This takes a while, and a lot of work, but I promise you, it gets better, you just have to love yourself again, forgive yourself, and move on. If you are in a position to, volunteer. Even on a small level. Our type have a great need to give! I consider it a super power ;) We have an endless tank of love and compassion! Don’t forget to recharge though. Alone time is good…
        You are loved Marcy :)

        Kia Ora e hoa,

I hear you <3 I got the same one as Type 1: Perfectionist. Im sure I did this test a quite a few years ago before and got the same answers but couldn't quite comprehend them (ego may have come to aid this)
What I've been venturing into with myself, is the sacred practice of trying to arrive in to myself. It's taken some time but I've needed it and it will only have its own course compared with my willingness to release. I am now in a place where I could have identified that for myself and I'm practicing communicating that to other people that impacts – especially me learning to nurture and grow in intimately vulnerable and fulfilling spaces.
things that have helped my journey so far:

        Inner-child meditations have helped
        journalling
Creating space or having relationships that can hold space for my to practice inner-exploration
        Meditation/dance/ art /Music
Personally, whakapapa research (researching my genealogy- helps give me purpose in how I arrived in the world)
Research and Reflection – Lonerwolf and Teal Swan are great resources.
        Shadow work/inner-child healing
Going gentle and using simple, nurturing practices that can allow me to come back into me again.
        i.e- Listening to my needs

Ultimately, taking t i m e for myself. which is the biggest luxury in our current climate of life and society.
But at the moment, things have unravelled and I know at the core of it, is forgiveness which may welcome serenity and peace. I'm in a place with myself to feel this and want this more no matter what-And know, that I will be tested for this too.

Being a Perfectionist is difficult for me. I find it extremely challenging to balance my ideals and desires with my current abilities and circumstances. Right now, my visualized future and future self are not obtainable with where I’m at in my spiritual journey and my fiscal circumstances. The frustration of that has been hard to accept and has seemingly cemented me in place. I have a lot of work to do internally until I can begin to manifest anything externally.

You’ve no idea what you’re talking about, ma’am. Truthfully speaking, you haven’t even scratched the surface of spirituality period, nor do you even know how to use that r-word properly. You may feel or think that you know what you’re talking about, but until you know the 6 Universal Rules…you, just like every other person on this planet besides me out of an infinite number of people in this dimension will continue to live a lie, and continue to live in ignorance.
