Are You an Indigo Child? These 17 Signs Will Reveal the Truth

by Aletheia Luna ยท Updated: Feb 14, 2025 ยท 154 Comments

Indigo Child image

In a world that has lost touch with its soul, the indigo child is here as a light-bearer, path forger, and paradigm shifter.

Although the concept of indigo children originated in the 1970โ€™s, there have been groups of individuals all through the ages whose mission and purpose have been to awaken humanity.

If you’re an old soul who feels a strong and profound urge to create change in society, you are likely an indigo child.

Spiritual Wanderer Course:

Being a lone wolf and a spiritual wanderer is a sacred calling in life โ€“ a unique and alchemical path of awakening. You donโ€™t need to feel lost, alone, or stuck on your journey any more. Itโ€™s time to meet your soulโ€™s deep needs for clarity, self-acceptance, and empowerment. Let us show you how โ€ฆ

What is an Indigo Child?

Also referred to as a crystal or star child, an indigo child is a person who has come into this world destined to create change and spiritually awaken humanity. Indigo children are considered to be freethinkers with profound insight into the human condition and an ability to see the truth clearly. As spiritually gifted old souls, indigo children find it hard to fit into mainstream society and often become misunderstood, rejected, or misdiagnosed and medicated. The indigo child is also thought to possess strong intuition and varying spiritual gifts such as the ability to communicate with spirit guides or see visions.

Truth and Deception

The primary role of the indigo child seems to revolve around exposing truth and deception. From a young age, indigo children are able to see through the illusions, half-truths, and falsehood rife in society. To their parents and teachers, they may seem like overly inquisitive, headstrong, and even obnoxious children. As precocious truth tellers, child and adult indigos canโ€™t help but see through the bullshit facades of other people and expose them. This desire to bring the truth to light seems to be written into the indigo childโ€™s DNA.

Enlightened teacher Jiddu Krishnamurti sums up the indigo childโ€™s philosophy when he writes,

It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.

Many people criticize the indigo child concept as being one that can be misused by parents seeking to make their children look special, particularly if they have special needs. Others claim that signs of being an indigo child are so vague they can apply to anyone (this is called the Forer effect).

While it is true that the indigo child label can be misused, just as any label can, the true signs of an indigo child are so specific that they cannot be widely applied to every person. As I just mentioned above, indigo children are obsessed with finding the truth โ€“ this cannot be said of every person or every child. Every rule, belief, structure, and institution will be questioned and ruthlessly challenged by the indigo child โ€“ this trait is truly unusual and extraordinary.

It is also common for people to criticize the indigo child label as being delusional. While all labels and concepts used to describe the ego are illusory constructs of the mind, finding a sense of affinity with the indigo child label is extremely beneficial. Identifying with this label helps us to develop self-understanding and acceptance, which are important elements of spiritual growth.

Indigo Children Who Are Misdiagnosed

It is common for the indigo child to be misdiagnosed with behavioral issues such as ADD, ADHD, and other mood disorders. Because of their headstrong and freethinking nature, such children are often feared, misunderstood, and therefore medicated at young ages. Unfortunately, medications such as Ritalin and Adderall often end up numbing the indigo child and causing them to lose contact with their intuitive capacities and truth-seeking nature.

17 Signs of an Indigo Child

Indigo Child image

Are you an indigo child? Perhaps your children are indigos? Below I have included a list of seventeen authentic signs.

I have omitted typical signs often mentioned on other websites like โ€œsense of entitlementโ€ and โ€œfeeling special and like you should be reveredโ€ because these, to me, represent narcissism or unhealthy parenting styles more than genuine indigo child signs.

If you possess more than half of these traits, youโ€™re likely an indigo child:

1. You are strong willed

You are a passionate person who will do anything it takes to accomplish your goals or dreams. Even if other people criticize or donโ€™t support you, you still keep going no matter what.

2. Youโ€™re an old soul

You feel as though youโ€™ve lived many lifetimes, and possess a wisdom that others your age donโ€™t yet have. As a child, you may have behaved like an old man or woman, and as an adult, you have a deeply spiritual and philosophical outlook on life.

3. Youโ€™re a freethinker

No idea or belief is too holy for you to dissect or reject. You prefer to think for yourself rather than blindly following the crowd. As an indigo child, questioning is everything to you.

4. Youโ€™re a headstrong nonconformist

As a child or teenager, you may have been thought of as โ€œnaughty,โ€ โ€œobnoxious,โ€ disobedient, and contrarian. As an adult, you still cannot stand being boxed in or controlled by others. As a headstrong nonconformist, you prefer to find your own truth and forge your own path.

5. Youโ€™re a passionate truth-seeker

Truth, to you, is of primary importance. You are always seeking to distinguish truth and reality from lies and deception. When you are around others, you can immediately tell when someone is lying or hiding something. Although the truth hurts, you honor it above all else. You would prefer to suffer from the truth than be happy believing lies.

6. Youโ€™re perceptive and intelligent

You can see and understand things about humanity and life that most other people donโ€™t perceive. Your keen perception allows you to discover the truth about the human condition, and how to ultimately help.

7. You are highly intuitive

Your keen perception also makes you highly intuitive. You can often intuit the best course of action as well as know things about others that are secret or hidden.

Your information will never be shared.

8. You want to change the world

Deep in your heart, you feel a driving force to create positive change on this planet. As an indigo child, you know that your destiny is to be a paradigm changer/destroyer. This strong sense of purpose forms the axis of your decisions. Whatever is not aligned with your inner sense of purpose quickly dissolves in favor of soul-based decisions.

9. Youโ€™re empathetic and compassionate

You care so much about this planet and other people that it often hurts. Every time you see or hear of violence, destruction, and cruelty, you feel sorrow and anger. Your high level of empathy and compassion means that you often struggle with anxiety or depression.

10. Youโ€™re a change-making leader

Since you were little, youโ€™ve always gravitated towards leadership. You may find it hard to work in teams or for other people and function better when youโ€™re in charge or working for yourself. You find it difficult to obey authority, particularly when that authority is corrupt, illogical or outdated. You want to offer better, wiser, and healthier ways to live life, making you destined to be a spiritual elder.

11. Youโ€™re idealistic

You have high expectations for yourself and other people. While idealism can be a positive trait, it can also carry disadvantages such as being overly critical or demanding. Nonetheless, your idealism is what helps you to strive for the highest and do the absolute best you can for the planet.

12. You have a loner/autonomous personality

As a free spirit, you donโ€™t like to be held down by anyone or anything. You find it difficult to be around too many people at once, and often prefer to spend time in your own company. As a lover of autonomy, you enjoy solitude and the insight it can bring.

13. Youโ€™re highly creative

Your nonconformist brain loves to express itself through art and creativity. Whether it be drawing, dancing, singing, building,ย painting, writing or crafting, you love creative self-expression.

14. You have a strong connection with nature and animals

As an empathic and compassionate person, you gravitate towards the natural world. You feel most at home when youโ€™re near the ocean or surrounded by trees and animals. Nature is so pure and grounding that you find it a welcome break from the pretension of humanity.

15. Youโ€™re drawn towards spirituality over religion

To you, spirituality is falling in love with the message, and religion is loving the messenger. As an indigo child, you are drawn towards truth in its purest form โ€“ not diluted by dogma or fundamentalist teachings.

16. You struggle with boredom

Because of your sharp and inquisitive mind, you tend to struggle with routine and conventional structures. As a result of your tendency to get bored easily, you may have been misdiagnosed with ADD or ADHD as a child.

17. You are prone to experiencing existential angst

Existential anxiety and depression go far beyond usual anxiety and depression, and this is because it is more concerned with life itself than the self. As an indigo child, you tend to ask questions such as โ€œWhy do we suffer?โ€ โ€œWhat is the meaning of life?โ€ โ€œWhy is there injustice?โ€ โ€œWhy was I born?โ€ Such deep philosophical questions cause you to lose interest in the meaningless pursuits carried out by the majority of humanity.

Other potential traits of indigo children include:

  • Tendency towards addiction to numb feelings
  • Seeking only loyal friendships
  • Proud/bossy
  • Fiery tempered
  • More sensitive to environmental and food pollutants
  • Spiritual gifts such as clairvoyance or telepathy

I donโ€™t have an indigo aura? Mine is really big and pure white. Many people have approached me and told me this. I hear messages spoken into my R ear. You canโ€™t lie to me. I just know. I have healed animals by thought and touch. Nothing is coincidence. Everything happens just as it is supposed to.

I’ve read several online articles and articles written in 1998 about the characteristics of the Indigo Children and there is no one list that jibes with any other. They are similar, but all are substantially different in characterizing some traits. According to one theory, I am an Indigo Child, while the others have variations that discount my being labeled as Indigo. Please explain how this can be and which one should I follow.

There’s actually a lot of criticism in the secular world (Not that I agree with them) where there’s a belief that terms like indigo children, crystal children, rainbow children, and even empaths are not real because people believe that these are just terms people use to feel superior over others, to be elitist, or to believe they’re perfect and spiritually enlightened. While I don’t believe this is true at all times, it’s true that a lot of people misuse these concepts as a way to brag about how “spiritual,” or “deep,” they are, bringing a watered down version of these concepts that are far less nuanced than the original. That is, if you act empathetic, they might call you an empath at most, but if you call yourself an empath to brag about it, a lot of people in the secular world will become skeptical. That is, if you really are something, you don’t need to go out of your way to brag about it so much. I do believe there are people like this, but they are not perfect, even if they are gifted in some ways. Think of people who are intellectual geniuses, artistic geniuses, sports’ geniuses, musical geniuses, and anything of that sort. They certainly are gifted, sure, but that their talents don’t necessarily make them perfect people, and neither are those who are not naturally talented automatically less compassionate, ethical, or diligent people. Though I can’t say it’s “bragging,” just because someone is gifted in something. The truth is, whether we like it or not, some people will learn concepts much faster even in a young age while others learn the same concepts much slower. It doesn’t make it impossible for the latter to learn it eventually with patience, but the truth is, we’re not equal in terms of skill, insight, or talent. And it doesn’t mean the former doesn’t have room to learn even more with open-minded humility. We’re equal in our value as a person, as a human, and as a living being, but we’re not necessarily equal in what we are capable of doing, whether we like it or not. But inequality in what you do is unrelated to inequality in who you are, and admitting people are not equal in terms of what they can do is not necessarily implying that people’s worth are not equal, simply because people’s worth is not defined by what you can do.

Wow this was 100% correct for me. At a young age I was diagnosed with ADD. I have been called special by my family and at school. Even tho I’m really smart I love learning and I have always questioned everything and I could see when adults would lie to me when i was younger. I’m now 31 with 5 kids I’m no longer a Christian. I really don’t want to be religious at all. But I do like to research everything. Also what made me look up indigo child because I seen a video about it but everyone refers to me as a old soul and always saying you must have been here before because I be knowing things I guess I shouldn’t. But I do think and feel like I’m a old soul. Anyway this was very helpful for me and gave me the answer I needed great work! Excuse my grammar.

The truth truth is that the very first question that NEEDS to be answered, and very specifically is between the age of 5and7 what did you start dreaming of? Every single Indigo can answer this question the same. No matter what generation is asked. I am an Indigo, and I know that a lot of you wish you were, or even think you are, but are not. And also know that every one of us feels the burdens of sin. We wear it like a sheet of lead. And most can answer this question, what is the only sin? The other 6 are also representations of the 1 true sin.

And I am INFJ. I don’t feel special and I don’t want this. Life would have been so much easier not being Indigo. And often wish I weren’t here, but I always remember how selfish I would be to exit before I can do my part to save life.

You do not have to. You are not forced to save any one’s life. Nothing should oblige you to do some shit to this shitty world. Just leave life according to you and your damn principles, and am sure you shall find a way , your own way to this journey.

Dream about at 5-7 yrs of age? I would fly!! Anywhere I wanted to go! I was always on a really big flying carpet. Iโ€™d lay down. Cross my arms and look down over the edge through my folded arms. Seeing my neighbors rooftops. Iโ€™d often wonder if it was real or if a dream. I wanted to know what my neighborhood looked like from over our rooftops. So Iโ€™d know if it were real or not. I could go anywhere just by thinking of a place!

I have learnt psychology for the past 5 years. This Indigo child representation basically boils down to being a typical personality type, which is in turn an INFJ. Being it the rarest type, and for the ignorance of parents and part of society as a whole, it has been stereo typed for those that are unaware of psychology to this mystical belief. It is correct that we feel a misfit in society, are very intuitive and empathic, but to label us as Indigo children is a bit extreme. Yes, I am an INFJ, possess a purple aura and have all the Indigo traits. But that is because I am an INFJ.

Seems a bit elitist to think only INFJs can be indigo children if you ask me. Sounds like bragging and condescension. I’m not denying that INFJs can be indigo children, and indigo children can be INFJs, but saying that only one personality type can fit the bill is rather discriminative. I mean, if you followed the MBTI community for years like I have, you’d notice there’s something akin to “personality racism,” or the belief that specific personality types can be better or worse that is observed in beginners studying MBTI. You might have studied psychology for years, but clearly you haven’t studied MBTI in depth yet. There are healthy and unhealthy versions of all MBTI types, and neither are INFJ types perfect simply because they are the rarest. I’m not saying all INFJs think of themselves that way, which is a harmful stereotype, but thinking you’re superior than other types is just perpetuating that stereotype. It’s why both Jesus and Hitler are known as INFJs. One uses the INFJ’s mystical intuition and empathy to teach the greatest lessons of forgiveness, compassion, and non-judgment, while the other uses a deep intuition to provide insight t how others feel and a legendary emotional charisma for manipulation. To be fair, it’s usually just younger INFJs who think they are “perfect saints,” but if you’re older and still think this way, something is wrong. You can search “Unhealthy version of INFJs,” or any type, and maybe search for a basic “Stereotypes of each MBTI type,” if you don’t want an overly simplistic interpretation of MBTI. I suggest look up Frank James, an INFJ, on YouTube, with his channel named after him.

Ok seriously… I don’t normally reply to what sounds like an ill informed and unread person’s unintelligible post… BUT COMMON! First of all, she wasn’t being elitist, what about her makes her comment elitist…since the form you used was an adjective here’s the definition of elitist:: elitist

        1. relating to or supporting the view that a society or system should be led by an elite.
        2. “older men with an elitist attitude about music”
        • demonstrating a superior attitude or behavior associated with an elite.
        • “some that say he is a spoiled, elitist snob”

Now help me understand how her comment fit into the either of those. If you’d like me to break down spoiled and snob you to can tell me how it fits in there too I’d be more than happy. They next very VERY disturbing part of the absurdity in which call a post is the exploitation of fitting racism into a post that is well within her right to comment on… PERSONALITY RACISM – get a grip person. I have never been the exposure of such ludicrous behavior in a post in my entire life. Get back to reality and NOT EVERYTHING that you don’t agree with needs to have racism attached to it. Next thing I know there will be BREAKFAST racism because I like Fruity Pebbles and not CoCo Pebbles. Or, because I like Special K strawberries and not Special K Chocolate (As an observation, the opposite is true in both scenarios… and I’m married to a black man, so you can leave your ignorant judgement of me judging you at the door). You need to wake up my friend and realize that the only people tearing this human existence apart are those who incite the solution and separation. And BOTH sides are guilty. Instead of spreading love and acceptance and education – whether you believe its our duty to so or not (Spoil Alert – It is all of our duty), you instead use the smallest part of your brain to insult someone. This has nothing to do with race, it has to do with being a human being, and my child of God – he would and is more than likely disappointed in you. If you want change, be that which you seek. Be the type of person you call out with enlightenment above. Cause all that hatred, is gonna seep through your pores and rear on your face if it hasn’t already. That’s not a judgement, accusation, or even a threat… that’s the truth, I’ve seen it happen before. Good luck, we are all just doing the best we know how, but that doesn’t mean we don’t call out unjust and absurdity when we see it. Take care and give love and light and infected pores on your face.

Hi Charlotte, Iโ€™m an INFJ also. Last year for my birthday I thought Iโ€™d try aura photography for the first time, skeptical but did it for fun. It came out indigo, with violet and white. Then, this summer by chance I had another opportunity to take an aura photograph, different city/country and photographer/equipment entirely. The colours again were indigo, with flecks of violet and white. There might be something here.
