What Is Spiritual Bypassing? (Beware of These 10 Types)

Spiritual bypassing is a very persistent shadow of spirituality, manifesting in many forms, often without being acknowledged.

    – R. Augustus

What comes to mind when you think of ‘spirituality’?

You might picture beautiful temples, ethereal instruments, golden Buddhas, gardens and forests of paradise, the faces of enlightened masters, angels, mountain ranges, sunsets, or any number of other dazzling images.

We tend to associate spiritual awakening with transcendental and heightened states of being that are invariably associated with feelings of happiness, joy, deep inner peace, and contentment.

    Shadow Work Journal Advertisement image

While all of this is true and wonderful, many of us become intoxicated, distracted, and ensnared by these highly attractive images of spirituality, avoiding the darker, painful, and more demanding sides of such a path.

At its core, spiritual bypassing is like any other form of avoidance that rewards us with a false feeling of security and happiness, while undermining the deeper path of spiritual integration, transformation, and Oneness.

    What you resist, persists.

    – C. G. Jung

For a long time, I struggled with understanding what ‘true’ spirituality looked and felt like.

I would look in the newspapers and find ads from kooky-looking psychic women promoting their services, all the way to alluring internet courses dedicated to “ascending to the 5D.”

I would read new age books about “optimism” and esoteric articles about casting spells to attract love and prosperity. I’d devour videos and purchase materials on the latest spiritual techniques or newly discovered “ancient practices” purported to “change my life.”

But amidst all of this searching, I somehow never felt a connection with any of these findings. All of these ideas and practices somehow felt amiss: something, somehow, seemed intuitively off-center and “wrong” about them.

I’ve finally discovered why I’ve always felt this way about so many spiritual practices in the past few years. All of these practices had felt so “off” to me because many of them, instead of being authentically spiritual, were actually forms of spiritual bypassing.

The term ‘spiritual bypassing’ was originally coined by psychologist John Welwood in 1984. As he explained in an interview,

Spiritual bypassing is a term I coined to describe a process I saw happening in the Buddhist community I was in, and also in myself. Although most of us were sincerely trying to work on ourselves, I noticed a widespread tendency to use spiritual ideas and practices to sidestep or avoid facing unresolved emotional issues, psychological wounds, and unfinished developmental tasks.

As we can see, spiritual bypassing is largely about avoiding or trying to escape from the more tricky parts of life. This understanding leads us to form a clear definition of spiritual bypassing:

    What is Spiritual Bypassing? (Definition)

Image of a sad man with a third eye

To spiritually bypass is to use spirituality to avoid, suppress, or escape from uncomfortable issues in life.

    Shadow Work Journal image

These issues could be the loss of a loved one, a relationship breakup, family problems, childhood abuse, loneliness, low self-esteem, self-sabotaging behaviors, fear, mental or emotional health issues, or any other problems life presents.

To many people, spirituality becomes a sort of crutch used to stand back up again in the face of life’s turmoil – and sometimes, this is necessary. We all need support at one time or another in our lives.

However, the problem comes when spirituality is used as a drug on which we become dependent to bypass the darker elements of our lives.

When spirituality is used as a defense mechanism to ward off the gremlins and demons of our existence, it actually becomes our greatest hindrance, preventing us from developing true courage, authenticity, and wholeness; qualities that refine our souls.

While the use of spirituality can provide us with a solid wall to hide behind, in doing so it traps us in an all-is-blissful-and-perfect jail cell of illusions.

    10 Types of Spiritual Bypassing

Image of a hooded woman covering her eyes committing spiritual bypassing

What gives light must endure burning.

    – V. Frankl (Man’s Search For Meaning)

The reality is that not everything in life is ‘love and light,’ as is the slogan for many spiritual seekers.

Pursuing the Light and living an enlightened and deeply interconnected existence is also about setting yourself on fire.

True spirituality is about creating an inferno of your false beliefs, illusions, desires, ideals, and prejudices. It’s about surrendering to the destruction of every limiting thing you ever thought and felt about yourself, other people, and the world, aka. ego death.

Spirituality is not always pretty. In fact, often, it’s the most shattering, tumultuous, and testing experience we can go through in life.

But only once we emerge from the embers of our destruction can we be reborn – like phoenixes – into new lives of clarity and purity.

The truth is that there are many types of spiritual bypassing that we sometimes don’t recognize (or refuse to recognize) in life. I have listed ten of the most common types below:

    I)  The Optimistic Bypass

We’ve all come across people in life who love to laugh and smile, yet seem to be forcefully optimistic. “Focus on the positive!” “See the glass as half full!” “Don’t let a frown get you down!” are some of the catchcries of these people who tend to use optimism as a way of avoiding the more sinister and troublesome realities of life. The optimistic bypass is often a side product of anger-phobia or else the inability to deal with negative emotions as a whole.

    II)  The Aggrandizement Bypass

The aggrandizement bypass is adopted by those who seek to feel enlightened, superior, or somehow “more awakened” in their spiritual development than others. Claiming to have reached a certain spiritual coveted milestone is a type of self-delusion that some spiritual seekers use as a way of masking their perceived deficiencies and insecurities. More commonly, this bypass is typically used by self-proclaimed masters, spiritual leaders, “kundalini awakened” yogis, and gurus to solicit a following (and make some good money!).

    III)  The Victim Bypass

When one becomes a victim of their gifts, or of other people, this takes away the pressure of responsibility for shaping a satisfying life and taking responsibility for one’s happiness – such is the case with the Victim Bypass. This type of spiritual bypass is often used by spiritual seekers who believe they have extrasensory gifts of some kind, but due to their gifts, they are unable to feel happy or healthy.

Identifying as an empath, for example, is sometimes a good example of this type of bypassing. As being an empath is a gift that’s all about sensing others’ emotions, this can be used as an excuse to behave in self-pitying, self-destructive, and volatile ways.

Other labels, like being a clairvoyant, an indigo child, a starseed, gifted healer, and so on, can often cause people to fall into the Victim Bypass trap.

    IV)  The Psychonaut Bypass

Many spiritual seekers explore the frontiers of the mind, the soul, and reality through the use of psychedelic drugs such as LSD, DMT, psilocybin mushrooms, mescaline, and other entheogens that expand consciousness. While psychoactive substances are a fascinating way of exploring reality, like any other drug, they can often be used to escape daily life and avoid committing to personal development and Ensoulment.

    V)  The Horoscope Bypass

When we frequently look outside of ourselves for help and guidance, as in the case with horoscopes and psychics, we’re failing to tap into our inner wellsprings of wisdom and strength and are allowing external predictions to control the outcome of our lives. The Horoscope Bypass is typically derived from fear and mistrust of ourselves, fear of taking self-responsibility for our decisions, and resistance to flowing with life by trying to predict “what’s going to happen.”

    VI)  The Saint Bypass

As children, many of us were conditioned to believe that a “spiritual person” is always kind, compassionate, and saintly. In adulthood, many of us continue to repeat this story to ourselves, and sadly, it can create tremendous suffering.

The Saint Bypass is a reflection of extreme “black or white” thinking, promoting the underlying belief that spiritual people can’t have dark sides because that would make them “unspiritual.” This type of spiritual bypass is essentially avoidance of one’s Shadow Self (dark side) by overcompensating with the guise of a sweet and heavenly exterior. The martyr complex is a major symptom of this type of bypassing.

    VII)  The Spirit Guide Bypass

In some spiritual traditions, it’s a God who protects, in others, it’s an angel, animal, or an ascended being who takes care of us.

While at certain points in life it’s helpful, soothing, and supportive to feel ourselves taken care of by a spirit guide, we can’t let it become too much of a crutch.

Relying 100% on our spirit guide/s to give us all of our insight, all of our protection, and all our spiritual sustenance keeps us in a spiritually infantile state. In other words, we fail to develop strength of spiritual character.

Spirit guides serve to teach us rather than to babysit us.

    VIII)  The Prayer Bypass

Similar to the Spirit Guide Bypass, the Prayer Bypass circumvents personal responsibility by putting faith in a higher being to solve all of our problems and issues. While praying can be a healthy practice, it can easily become limiting and misguided. Sinking too much into passivity is an imbalanced way to live life and can easily lead to disaster. We must learn to take action and trust our own instincts as well.

    IX)  The Guru Bypass

Often it is beneficial to follow a guru, shaman, or spiritual teacher to learn and grow. However, becoming too attached to such people can rapidly turn into another form of spiritual bypassing.

The temptation to begin worshiping (knowingly or unknowingly) spiritual teachers means that we eventually forget the purpose of listening to them, i.e., to integrate the essence of their teachings.

By treating the words of a guru or master as the irrefutable truth and failing to think for ourselves, we fall into cult-like groupthink, and we’re starved of true spiritual growth and transformation on our spiritual journeys.

    X)  The Finger-Pointing Bypass

At some point on our spiritual quests, we begin to see through the lies, delusions, and crazy behaviors committed by our fellow human beings and this can make us angry, downhearted, and frustrated.

However, when we get caught up in “everything that is wrong” with the outside world and other people, dedicating our lives to the self-righteous quest of finger-pointing, this can be another form of spiritual bypassing.

Finger-pointing instills us with a false sense of righteousness, taking away the responsibility of looking inside and working on ourselves.

At its roots, the Finger-Pointing bypass is sourced in egocentric separation and fearful avoidance of our own shadows.

    ***

I’m sure there are many other forms of spiritual bypassing out there. But, at the very least, the above ten forms are the most common bypasses that we can easily observe around and within us.

    How to Stop Spiritual Bypassing

Image of a woman staring into a mirror working through her spiritual bypassing issues

Without deep and honest self-acceptance, the spiritual life rests on a dangerous psychological foundation and is nothing more than escape into a world of illusion. Humble self-knowledge is the most basic condition for any true spirituality.

    – John Monbourquette

The spiritual bypass is slippery, conniving, and is often disguised in robes of light.

It can take a lot of ruthless self-honesty – or what is known as spiritual discernment – to see through the lies we’ve been conditioned to believe or have told ourselves. But, rest assured, favoring the truth will help us greatly in the longterm.

So how do we stop spiritual bypassing? Here are some methods you might like to use:

    1. Cultivate an open-minded attitude

Before uncovering any forms of spiritual bypassing that have wheedled their way into your life, you need to be open. You need to be willing to be wrong, misguided, or totally off the mark. Without that willingness to be open-minded, you’ll be fooling yourself. There will be no point in even trying to call yourself out because you’ll be shooting yourself in the foot before even beginning!

Therefore, strive to cultivate an open-minded attitude of humility. Remind yourself that it’s okay to be imperfect (we all are!). Most spiritual seekers – in fact, I’d dare say ALL seekers – go wrong at some point. And that’s nothing to be ashamed of. Embrace your flawed humanity and take steps toward greater spiritual expansion.

    2. Examine the light and dark side of what you do

There’s a light and dark side to everything. Even if you struggle to find out what’s wrong with the spiritual activities or commitments you’re dedicated to right now, create hypothetical scenarios.

For example, if you follow a spiritual teacher that you love and adore, create a hypothetical scenario where that teacher betrays your trust or does something against your ethics. What then?

    Ask yourself questions such as:

    • “What could go wrong here?”
    • “What aren’t I seeing?”
    • “What’s the other side of this?”
    • “In the past, how has this hurt someone?”
    • “What warnings do people give about this activity?”
    • “Is this hurting me in some way?”
    • “Is this harming others in some way?”
    • “How is this making me weak or dependant?”
    • “Is there an opportunity for me to be taken advantage of here?”

Listening to your doubt is intelligent. Blind faith creates sheep, not a self-sovereign wolf. Dare to look at both sides of life. Honor the yin and yang of existence. Embrace the energy of both Shiva (the destroyer) and Shakti (the creator) within you.

    3. Dare to face your cognitive dissonance

Cognitive dissonance (CD) is a state of being where a person’s beliefs and behaviors don’t align.

CD generally happens to people who hold two contradictory beliefs and have a sophisticated spiritual ego. The result of CD is a sense of underlying uneasiness, anxiety, guilt, and like “something isn’t quite right.”

Those who carry a lot of cognitive dissonance tend to “explain away” their behavior (or that of others) and live in denial. Facing the truth is too painful, so reality is avoided, and a false reality is created instead.

CD often happens to members of cults, but can also occur in the general spiritual community. For example, a person might experience CD when they follow the principle of non-harming (Ahisma) but hit their children every time they get angry.

Other examples of CD include following a narcissistic spiritual teacher who says one thing and does the other, claiming to be a healer with special abilities but on some level knowing that it’s a pretense (and placebo), following a non-dual philosophy but being dogmatic about it, and so on.

Facing CD involves doing shadow work and examining places and behaviors in your life that don’t add up. This practice isn’t about shaming yourself or being “more perfect,” but being honest and clearing away any self-delusion.

    4. Ask others for their honest opinions

If you have any close friends or family members (who you have a healthy and respectful relationship with), talk to them about your spiritual path. Ask them if they have noticed any spiritual bypassing tendencies within you. If they don’t understand what spirtual bypassing is, show them this article or explain it to them!

Then, once your trusted friend or family member is ready, consciously brace yourself (and your ego) by taking a slow, soft, deep breath for their response. If at any point you feel overwhelmed with an emotion like anger or defensiveness, thank them and tell them that you need a minute or two to process what they’ve told you.

Feedback from other people (who genuinely care about our wellbeing) is invaluable. But make sure it’s from people you trust. Don’t go asking someone you have a complicated connection with to divulge your spiritual bypassing tendencies. Likely, they’ll use it as an opportunity to hurt you in a backhanded way.

If you don’t have anyone you trust, you could try a trained spiritual counselor who’s familiar with spiritual bypassing or even an online group of kindred spirits whom you trust.

    5. Face and feel your pain

Why does spiritual bypassing occur? The answer is that it helps us to avoid facing painful emotions such as grief, shame, rage, hatred, and terror.

Everyone wants to enjoy a sparkly spiritual high (that is ultimately short-lived) but no one wants to do the hard work of facing inner pain (that actually leads to longlasting joy, fulfillment, and peace).

Facing and feeling your pain is not simple. You’ll most likely require the help of a spiritual counselor or therapist – and ideally, they will be trauma-informed, as repressed pain stems from unresolved trauma.

Facing one’s pain is not a fun prospect for most people, hence why they avoid this work and keep using their spiritual bandaids. But the fact still remains: the pain needs to be dealt with sooner or later.

Practices that can help you face and feel your pain might include breathwork, bodywork (like yoga), spiritual meditation, mindfulness, keeping a journal, art therapy, expressive dancing, catharsis, inner child work, and many other creative or embodied practices.

    Final Words

Spiritual bypassing is a topic that I believe every book, course, website, teacher, and guru should incorporate into their methodology, without exception.

To think that spirituality is without its dark side is not only totally naive, but unequivocably dangerous. We absolutely need to practice spiritual discernment and recognize where we might be wrong or misaligned – and to do that, we need to face our pain and shadows.

In the words of psychologist and author Elaine N. Aron:

Real redemption or enlightenment, as much as it can be achieved in this world, comes through hard work that does not skirt tough personal issues.

It can be a deeply unsettling, even terrifying experience to tear down the veneer of illusion from our lives and stare into the face of truth.

But the spiritual path is a process of destruction and purification; it requires you to set afire all hidden illusions and falsities so that you can experience the liberating joy of awakening to your True Nature.

Thanks for the article, but it left me a bit bemused. I’m new to all this.

Two months ago I was a complete materialistic atheist and thought that everything outside strict materialism was woowoo delusional nonsense. Then I accidentally had an intense spiritual experience with a plant medicine and a goddess permanently took up residence in my head.

Since then my spirituality and awateness have just sort of been shooting up by themselves pretty much by themselves every day. I haven’t yet put much effort into purposeful cultivation, outside of working to improve my relationship with the goddess.

My motivation in this regard is severely lacking, but since I do have a goddess in my head now and she says we’re family I did just sort for increased motivation, intelligence, creativity, and spirituality since I assumed we’re sopposed to ask for things from gods. I got a positive response, and all that has been happening without me putting much effort into it myself.

(I’m not denigrating the work of the goddess by the way. My efforts and interests in the matter is just much less than what she is doing for me, so I’m extremely, extremely grateful to her. I assume when I get to a reasonably good position I’d be able to start helping her in turn.)

Anyway since she is doing so much for me and my own efforts are a bit careless and lacking, is this too much spiritual bypassing? I mean I have the understanding that family members are supposed to help each other out and put up with some crap from eachother, but I have the feeling that I could/should be doing more for her. Or should I just continue letter her help me and give me directions for now?

        Thanks.

A few misconceptions on the percieved psychonaut bypass. As someone who has taken that path, I consider plant medicine to be invaluable to actually face ones own demons.
      Face one’s dark side.
Plant medicine may also help with other addictions. Like alcohol, and pharma pills. Social programming. Fear of the unknown.
Plant medicine is not a party drug.

Anyone asks me who my teacher, guru, or master is, I always respond “I am my own guru”… And listen to the whispers from the voices of dead writers, artists, thinkers, drunks and Sturm und Drang aficionados.
I rarely find something useful among leaders of organized cults, religions, or anyone who don’t tolerate transgressions by questioning their insights and authorities.
I don’t trust any room or hall where all stand in glee, facing the same direction at the pedestal of their thought leader.
Nor am I a fan of any team or club who are desperate to have me as a member, or even some sort of leader, or whatever you want to call it.
      Now, a riddle:
      Who came first?
      The shaman or the yogi?

Is cannabis a medicine, or a drug for spiritual bypassing?
      Do Iboga have healing properties?
Is mother mushroom a dope for spiritual cheaters and mislead party goers?
Teachers who put themselves on a pedestalover others are more than ripe to be torn down.
      One final point:
Prophets are never who you thin they are. They are not messiahs to save some “righteous flock from a godforsaken planet”. They come when they are needed. And their message is more often than not a message their followers don’t want to hear, but desperately need.
Messengers don’t play party politics, spiritual word salads, or toy with words for cheap tricks and gaslighting.
And sometimes, having a direct conversation with the living, sentient plant beings may be that shock medcine for people to wake up from their matrix dreams.

        Hi Morten, thanks for sharing.

As someone who has taken the psychonaut path as well and has tried many plant medicines, I’m not denying how valuable it is. Plant medicine, I believe, can help free us of even the worst and most persistent addictions. In my life, plant medicine has helped tremendously in my spiritual development and trauma healing, and I am forever indebted to it.

*However,* “too much of a good thing can be a bad thing.” I’ve found that it is actually possible to become overly dependant on plant medicines and the ecstatic visions and revelations they elicit, and neglect focusing on the actual work of spiritual integration.

You write, “Is cannabis a medicine, or a drug for spiritual bypassing?” My answer is that it can be both, it’s not an either/or situation. Context matters here, and those who aren’t mindful can easily misuse plant medicine, even if they think they’re “honoring it” (that’s what I did and I’ve seen many do as well).

Plant medicines deserve our utmost respect, and sometimes that involves taking a good look at our own behavior honestly in relationship with this sacred teacher. None of us are exempt from the trap of spiritual bypassing, no matter how good our intentions may be (we’re human and imperfect after all.

One of the most common Spiritual Bypasses I encounter is “willing to admit I am wrong”. Folks tend to use this as an excuse not to pursue deeper spiritual truths and to say “Oh well, if I might be wrong, no sense in looking further.”

Ahh true! You also see it a lot in social media programming, where the algorithms focus on showing us more and more of what agrees with our already established beliefs and ideas so that we end up living in an information “bubble” of our own interests, and don’t see very much conflicting or totally “out there” information. Thanks for this Bill :)

My spiritual bypass has mostly been with a psychedelic ‘marijuana’ with the excuse that it was strictly intentional for expanding my consciousness yet I was actually addicted to running to it whenever I felt overwhelmed with emotions I felt I couldn’t bare in other words I was using psychedelics compulsively but not consciously, but oh blessings unto the cosmos I let it go though it was one of those hardest bonds of painful stress I always feared to confront.. it’s been a month or more though without it completely..I just take deep breath stillfully and feel my pain, mood swings and any other emotions that arise..I am completely freer and happier than I have ever been..
        Thanks so much Luna&Sol❣️❣️

Got my medical marihuana card 4 years ago.
Not giving up on that in the near future.
As it’s better medicine than pharma pills for chronic pains from old injuries and insomnia to mention a few.
Mother mushroom gives you what you need in her loving arms, whatever it is, and reset connections lost by other things.
Same with Ayahuashca. Which might be cleansing.
What Iboga does, I don’t know. Only 1st hand experience I heard someone tell me, is that it was a 12 hour long hard talk from a strict father.
Perhaps this humanity needs a few healthy doses of psilocybin mushrooom. The plant medicine regulates itself… and off course daily appointments with Dr. THC and nurse Mary Jane. as a vitimanine shot against the daily insanity I see before me whenever I feel the need and urge to ‘socialize’.
In these urgent times, we don’t have time for rational solutions for a humanity hell bent on self desctruction.

Even i feel i fall in one of these categories, but then how do I follow the actual spiritual path, by not falling into these traps. I really want to. What is spirituality actually then?

Hi Harleen. Don’t worry, it’s totally normal to fall into any of these traps (I have and continue to sometimes). The ‘How to Stop Spiritual Bypassing’ section of this article has some useful pointers. Otherwise, here is a helpful resource and place to start: https://lonerwolf.com/spiritual-journey/ <3

To Start.. Welcome to the new Ensoulment Group to emerge! It’s great to see the divine feminine in full spiritual growth. Tis like a new babe in arms or new voice in the new creation of the world.

      Spiritual Bypassing Anglo/Catholic style
From our earliest yearnings towards inner things, we wanted to feel not only the true core of Christian Belief centred on God
in Christ. I/we expressed this in full humility via Saint Francis of Assisi in his teachings for not only single males taking on the full monks robe and cord of humility and devotion to Christ, but also via his Franciscan Third Order which allowed married couples to join in part to this section of Chapter Group. Not being as rigorous say as a hermitic single male order but still following the style of dress of St Francis and sticking close to the Rule as possible.
This Third Order taught us much of dispensing with much of what we don’t need in life, to live simply and to see outside of the standard western style and to feel a sense of Spiritual freedom. So to us it seemed like the perfect solution to escape the grind of the modern world with its standard regulation for young people to get employed, follow the rules and social norms even though we often felt and still do feel like outsiders. For a time this worked like a charm as we had GOD in our lives and felt a connection and inclusiveness unavailable to most. So we nurtured the culture, growing in Church life and in the Spirit of St Francis via reading, praying, doing the rosary and attending week day and week end Mass at All Saint’s here in Brisbane. Out side of this we engaged in charitable works, to help Solomon Island peoples to grow in Spirit of the times plus worked with a Soup Kitchen and drop in centre “139 Club” to feed the homeless and others that were lost or alone to find togetherness, with some sense of honesty and Brotherly/Sisterly love. This being much hard work mostly for my wife, yet we found a sense of need and belonging which was well shared between ourselves and others.
After a while though we were taken for granted by the Church and had to fit into their hierarchy and Church politics, to conform or be disbanded and melded into other sections of the Christian community. So slowly our initial enthusiasm for the journey and style of St Francis was interrupted, re interpreted by whom ever came into lead our Chapter, and corrupted to fit Church social politics. We became saddened and disillusioned by these proceedings and gradually our member numbers began to drop as ordinary people could not subscribe nor full fill their Spiritual Franciscan Dreams.
Our disillusionment with Church and those purporting to know the way of St Francis grew and grew harder to accept until we had to leave. The gaslight bubble had burst leaving us without support and making for a reality check and rethink into what was and is now our truth to each other and the life and full service of the Spirit.

Hi John. Thank you for your comment and for your support of the creation of our new community, Ensoulment! What you share here is intriguing for me and something of sign of synchronicity. Yesterday I actually purchased a book of the writings from St Francis of Assisi after going deeper into the writings of mystics. I love his reverence for nature and approach to life and the Divine. So hearing you write this is really quite interesting for me – it reminds me that religion isn’t the foundation of my life (personally) as religion is generally suited to the mind and ego that likes structure, power, and control. Instead, down-to-earth mysticism is the foundation of my life, and I feel that is what you experienced early on in your Franciscan group. Have you read Richard Rohr? I think you might like him.

Thank you, Aletheia. I have dealt with spiritual bypassing most of my life. Initially while using LSD. Then in 2006, while listening to a Adyashanti tape that our true nature was awareness, I “turned” to see my awareness and entered the void, which had no space or time. I thought I was free. What has served me is my commitment to truth above all else. I am presently enjoying noticing whenever I am upset. I now take it as an opportunity to see what I am attached to or is hidden to my conscious mind. I don’t expect this to ever end. Life is great and I love everyone and everything. Love, Stephan

Hi Stephan, thanks for sharing your experience. It reminds me of my own bypassing using etheogens like magic mushrooms, marijuana, and yes, LSD, and how easy it is to feel like “that’s all you need to depend on.” It’s a tricky one and very, very seductive as the spiritual highs are quite literally psychedelic. It sounds as though you’ve come to a much more balanced place, good on you! Much love :-)

I appreciate this article! There have been many times during my journey that I have had to take a step back because the ‘advice’ I am hearing seems insincere, money driven or self-serving. Since that is the reason I don’t subscribe to organized religion (though I consider myself Christian), it seemed wrong for me. If buying all the right stuff, etc… is how I grow then I thought I would remain stagnant. Luckily, I work with a therapist in conjunction with my beliefs which helped me to bring out my issues and heal. I, as well everyone who is true to this path of growth, must accept that healing is a life-long process. If you do it in the right way (for YOU) you will succeed!!

I feel like I may fall in the category with the horoscope bypassing but if I had not followed my horoscope apps daily I would never have figured out what was going on & what some of the things I needed to work on were. I would be SO lost right now. I dissected my birth chart & drug all the skeletons out of the closet & when I did that I started having horrible tension in my low back & circulation issues. Had it not have been 4 reading my horoscope apps daily I would still be going from Dr. to Dr. trying to figure out what was going on. Fortunately my apps told me what was going on & I then had to embark on a long journey of emotional work w/ a therapist. I would have NEVER put the pieces of the puzzle 2gether. I look to my horoscope 4 guidance b/c I am SO out of my element here & I have no one else to ask. NOBODY. There have been many times that I feel like my guides speak to me thru those apps. Otherwise I’d be lost as a goose. It was one of those apps that actually told me I was going thru my spiritual awakening. FINALLY something that is making some sense. If it weren’t 4 those apps telling me what’s going on I probably would’ve already checked out of here if u want to know the truth of the matter. That’s just how bad it’s been. Thank u so much 4 this article. It has helped me a lot!

        Hi Christine,
I hear you, totally. Sometimes things like horoscopes help tremendously and can even be life saving. There’s no absolute black and white here, it’s all contextual, so while some people might use horoscopes as a bypass, others absolutely need them for their sanity. You do what is best for you. Happy to help ♡

Yeah, great ringing of the wake-up bell.
All those traps I have fallen into. The ego-mind inevitably wants to appropriate whatever it may serve its desperation to survive and feel validated. I still can’t pretend to know what being seriously engaged on a said-spiritual path can mean. Where does it end, if at all? I can only intend to be honest about where I am, while simultaneously practicing self-inquiry.
And even that phrasing is questionable and needs to be questioned or seen.
It’s a subtle affair. However, if the aspiration is authentic, the paradox is that it’s not us engaging on the path but we’re being engaged on it. Yet it’s our responsibility to use the tools constantly handed for the task of the moment.
Humility can’t be forced; it’s not a form that can be created. It’s the result of a long road of honestly looking at lies and traces of lies in that honesty.
      It meets us halfway.

Thanks for your honesty, vulnerability, and insightful comment Michael. I absolutely agree that everything on the spiritual path (what we believe, practice, pursue, think) must be questioned. The mind must be like a sword and the heart must be like open water.

Very thought provoking article. I have always thought of myself as ‘having too much common sense’ for my own good sometimes. My family called me the ‘smart one’ simply because I seemed to always follow the rules, make good choices and keep a calm attitude, go with the flow. Not to say that all my choices in relationships were good, quite contrar’, ; but, I always seemed to pick myself up, dust myself off and keep moving on. Never a religious person; although, attending several different religious entities in my younger days, made me feel as though everyone seemed to be worshiping the same higher power; just doing it differently. Curiosity has always led me toward a more Spiritual aspect, and the synchronicities connected with the Universe astrology planetary alignments…all taken as a matter of guidance, rather than fortune. Since retiring and having more time to delve into Spirituality, meditations and card reading…I find myself wondering if I have a dark side that I’m not aware of…yes, I recognize small things like thoughts and judgements of others before knowing their ‘side’, being more of a combination introvert/extrovert enjoying ‘my alone space’, sometimes feeling socially inadequate but other times, surprising myself at how knowledgeable I am in some conversations. When I read about how others are dealing with catastrophic events, health and mental issues and ask myself, why am I so ‘normal’ ??…or am I ? Is there something I am not seeing (?) Yes, I feel down at times; maybe for a day…rarely dwell on the past, not that some things are not forgotten, it’s just that I choose not to let any of those thoughts consume me. Living today and looking forward. Am I hiding behind positivity ?…I’ve definitely been through some hard, emotional times; but nothing that ‘killed’ me :-) Am I depending on others’ card & astrology readings to support my positive attitude ?? ..possibly…your article gives me pause.

      WIND SONG
ALL THE LITTLE PIECES OF ME
COME TOGETHER TO FORM A SENSE OF SELF
A FRACTURED REALITY OF WHAT I SEE
      SURROUNDING ME
ARE PART OF THIS DISTORTED PERSONALITY
      THAT SO SOLEMNLY
      SO ELOQUENTLY
      BECAME ME
IS THIS A CASE OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY
OR JUST A MERE REFLECTION OF THE ME I SEE
      WHEN DARKNESS SURROUNDS ME
      WITH A PARTICULAR MELANCHOLY
      THAT STAYS WITH ME
EVEN WHILE STRIVING TO BREAK FREE
      TO FACE REALITY
TO FIGURE OUT THE BROKEN PIECES OF ME
WHEN MY OWN TRUTH ESCAPES ME
A SILENT CRY CAN’T HURT ME
OR REVEAL THE DEPTH OF ME
I HURL MY VOICE TO THE WIND
      IT COMES BACK TO ME
      A STIRRING ECHO WITHIN ME
      CALLING ME TO JUST LISTEN
      TO THAT STILL VOICE
      IN ME
      TO
LET IT GO AND JUST BE
      AND REMEMBER TO LOVE
      ALL
      OF
      ME

      Greetings !
I am glad that i found you. In fact, my adolescent daughter brought you to me or brought me to you. She advised me to attempt a free quiz on your portal and since then it is daily that I thank her for this recommendation. And now I thank you from the core of my heart. You have such great and deep stuff on your website. It is so reflective and introspective. I have downloaded the free resources like Shadow work, Inner Child work, Wild Wolf work and many more. I have been trying to get 101 prompts but in vain. Kindly help with this. I wish to purchase the Inner child and shadow work journals from you. I am on the spiritual path and your articles and emails are making me face my fears and demons. Actually, I wanted to spiritual bypass them but now I realize I will have to meet them, deal with them and then ascend higher. Many thanks to both of you for such a marvelous as well as insightful offering that you give for free to the seekers. May the Divine bless you and your service.

Like everything, balance is probably key. I spent a lot of time working on my dark issues in an unproductive manner and with few coping skills. When I began on my current spiritual path, I let the problems hang out in the background for a while. Then, when they presented themselves again, I was better equipped to face them.
For me, spirituality provided self-esteem, support of a guide and friends, and meditative practices that provided a framework to then look at the shadows in a new way. Along the way, I heard the term “spiritual bypass”. My answer was often that for the moment, I needed what looked like a “bypass”. Eventually I got around to the shadows again. I wasn’t trying to avoid them really. Though like everyone I did wish they would be gone when I turned around. I was just exhausted by them. From a point of view strengthened by spiritual work, the inner work, as painful as it is, was easier.
So I’ve heard “spiritual bypass” enough not to disagree that it can be unhealthy, but I caution people from avoiding or tempering spirituality for fear of the bypass.

        Dear MNB
Absolutely! If fear of spiritual bypassing puts people off finding grace they will be locked in negativity. With insight into the spiritual dimension shadows and wounds can be returned to, owned and held and they may well dissipate. Obviously it is not a good thing to pretend this has been done prematurely when unconscious wounds still remain. But neither does it seem healthy to dwell on them overly. My gut says be kind to oneself, there is nothing wrong with loving the uplift and change of view spiritual practice can give whilst gently bringing the unresolved under its influence.

Enlightening viewpoint! Yet at the same time the illusion of spirituality seems adaptive and so necessary in this crazy existence. If an individual is strong enough to confront reality this leads to true awakening. So many variables lead to that confident individual and many may not be privileged to that position.

I would love to have further dialogue with you on this topic. I and a fellow devotee, a psychologist, have been discussing this topic with respect to mental illness as an extreme example and avoidance on a more general level. In my own personal experience, spirituality is not for the faint of heart and you can’t avoid personal growth opportunities. Maybe in the short-term. In many cases, the spiritual can be a source of support and the spiritual can be a road map to ever-new joy. Joy is a choice and joy and personal struggles are not mutually exclusive. It’s about how we chose to respond to our challenges.

In this instance, the line between these two states needs better definition and clarity. That is the work we are doing. Again, would love to hear from you. ~ In Joyful Service; Mahadas
