In a world that has lost touch with its soul, the indigo child is here as a light-bearer, path forger, and paradigm shifter.
Although the concept of indigo children originated in the 1970’s, there have been groups of individuals all through the ages whose mission and purpose have been to awaken humanity.
If you’re an old soul who feels a strong and profound urge to create change in society, you are likely an indigo child.

What is an Indigo Child?
Also referred to as a crystal or star child, an indigo child is a person who has come into this world destined to create change and spiritually awaken humanity. Indigo children are considered to be freethinkers with profound insight into the human condition and an ability to see the truth clearly. As spiritually gifted old souls, indigo children find it hard to fit into mainstream society and often become misunderstood, rejected, or misdiagnosed and medicated. The indigo child is also thought to possess strong intuition and varying spiritual gifts such as the ability to communicate with spirit guides or see visions.
Truth and Deception
The primary role of the indigo child seems to revolve around exposing truth and deception. From a young age, indigo children are able to see through the illusions, half-truths, and falsehood rife in society. To their parents and teachers, they may seem like overly inquisitive, headstrong, and even obnoxious children. As precocious truth tellers, child and adult indigos can’t help but see through the bullshit facades of other people and expose them. This desire to bring the truth to light seems to be written into the indigo child’s DNA.
Enlightened teacher Jiddu Krishnamurti sums up the indigo child’s philosophy when he writes,
It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.
Many people criticize the indigo child concept as being one that can be misused by parents seeking to make their children look special, particularly if they have special needs. Others claim that signs of being an indigo child are so vague they can apply to anyone (this is called the Forer effect).
While it is true that the indigo child label can be misused, just as any label can, the true signs of an indigo child are so specific that they cannot be widely applied to every person. As I just mentioned above, indigo children are obsessed with finding the truth – this cannot be said of every person or every child. Every rule, belief, structure, and institution will be questioned and ruthlessly challenged by the indigo child – this trait is truly unusual and extraordinary.
It is also common for people to criticize the indigo child label as being delusional. While all labels and concepts used to describe the ego are illusory constructs of the mind, finding a sense of affinity with the indigo child label is extremely beneficial. Identifying with this label helps us to develop self-understanding and acceptance, which are important elements of spiritual growth.
Indigo Children Who Are Misdiagnosed
It is common for the indigo child to be misdiagnosed with behavioral issues such as ADD, ADHD, and other mood disorders. Because of their headstrong and freethinking nature, such children are often feared, misunderstood, and therefore medicated at young ages. Unfortunately, medications such as Ritalin and Adderall often end up numbing the indigo child and causing them to lose contact with their intuitive capacities and truth-seeking nature.

17 Signs of an Indigo Child
Are you an indigo child? Perhaps your children are indigos? Below I have included a list of seventeen authentic signs.
I have omitted typical signs often mentioned on other websites like “sense of entitlement” and “feeling special and like you should be revered” because these, to me, represent narcissism or unhealthy parenting styles more than genuine indigo child signs.
If you possess more than half of these traits, you’re likely an indigo child:
1. You are strong willed
You are a passionate person who will do anything it takes to accomplish your goals or dreams. Even if other people criticize or don’t support you, you still keep going no matter what.
2. You’re an old soul
You feel as though you’ve lived many lifetimes, and possess a wisdom that others your age don’t yet have. As a child, you may have behaved like an old man or woman, and as an adult, you have a deeply spiritual and philosophical outlook on life.
3. You’re a freethinker
No idea or belief is too holy for you to dissect or reject. You prefer to think for yourself rather than blindly following the crowd. As an indigo child, questioning is everything to you.
4. You’re a headstrong nonconformist
As a child or teenager, you may have been thought of as “naughty,” “obnoxious,” disobedient, and contrarian. As an adult, you still cannot stand being boxed in or controlled by others. As a headstrong nonconformist, you prefer to find your own truth and forge your own path.
5. You’re a passionate truth-seeker
Truth, to you, is of primary importance. You are always seeking to distinguish truth and reality from lies and deception. When you are around others, you can immediately tell when someone is lying or hiding something. Although the truth hurts, you honor it above all else. You would prefer to suffer from the truth than be happy believing lies.
6. You’re perceptive and intelligent
You can see and understand things about humanity and life that most other people don’t perceive. Your keen perception allows you to discover the truth about the human condition, and how to ultimately help.
7. You are highly intuitive
Your keen perception also makes you highly intuitive. You can often intuit the best course of action as well as know things about others that are secret or hidden.
Would you like to save this?
Your information will never be shared.
8. You want to change the world
Deep in your heart, you feel a driving force to create positive change on this planet. As an indigo child, you know that your destiny is to be a paradigm changer/destroyer. This strong sense of purpose forms the axis of your decisions. Whatever is not aligned with your inner sense of purpose quickly dissolves in favor of soul-based decisions.
9. You’re empathetic and compassionate
You care so much about this planet and other people that it often hurts. Every time you see or hear of violence, destruction, and cruelty, you feel sorrow and anger. Your high level of empathy and compassion means that you often struggle with anxiety or depression.
10. You’re a change-making leader
Since you were little, you’ve always gravitated towards leadership. You may find it hard to work in teams or for other people and function better when you’re in charge or working for yourself. You find it difficult to obey authority, particularly when that authority is corrupt, illogical or outdated. You want to offer better, wiser, and healthier ways to live life, making you destined to be a spiritual elder.
11. You’re idealistic
You have high expectations for yourself and other people. While idealism can be a positive trait, it can also carry disadvantages such as being overly critical or demanding. Nonetheless, your idealism is what helps you to strive for the highest and do the absolute best you can for the planet.
12. You have a loner/autonomous personality
As a free spirit, you don’t like to be held down by anyone or anything. You find it difficult to be around too many people at once, and often prefer to spend time in your own company. As a lover of autonomy, you enjoy solitude and the insight it can bring.
13. You’re highly creative
Your nonconformist brain loves to express itself through art and creativity. Whether it be drawing, dancing, singing, building, painting, writing or crafting, you love creative self-expression.
14. You have a strong connection with nature and animals
As an empathic and compassionate person, you gravitate towards the natural world. You feel most at home when you’re near the ocean or surrounded by trees and animals. Nature is so pure and grounding that you find it a welcome break from the pretension of humanity.
15. You’re drawn towards spirituality over religion
To you, spirituality is falling in love with the message, and religion is loving the messenger. As an indigo child, you are drawn towards truth in its purest form – not diluted by dogma or fundamentalist teachings.
16. You struggle with boredom
Because of your sharp and inquisitive mind, you tend to struggle with routine and conventional structures. As a result of your tendency to get bored easily, you may have been misdiagnosed with ADD or ADHD as a child.
17. You are prone to experiencing existential angst
Existential anxiety and depression go far beyond usual anxiety and depression, and this is because it is more concerned with life itself than the self. As an indigo child, you tend to ask questions such as “Why do we suffer?” “What is the meaning of life?” “Why is there injustice?” “Why was I born?” Such deep philosophical questions cause you to lose interest in the meaningless pursuits carried out by the majority of humanity.
Other potential traits of indigo children include:
- Tendency towards addiction to numb feelings
- Seeking only loyal friendships
- Proud/bossy
- Fiery tempered
- More sensitive to environmental and food pollutants
- Spiritual gifts such as clairvoyance or telepathy

Something my son may not know about me. He may not remember. I can conquer my autism. I can pull all the pieces of me into one. This is no lie. I can really do this. When I do. I am very calm and all business. That’s how I won a very impressive fight once. I’m fixing to try to start finding my way back into your life son. I’m going to fight by your side if I can get there. I think all it will take is you holding out your strong hand for me. Just realize I’ve been out here fighting in the world. I’ve been beat down. But Captain America never stops fighting once he starts. And we know just from looking at me. I’m Captain America. I’m fixing to try to come find you son. That’s what you want isn’t it son. You want that big muscular smiling guy who everyone used to like before I got so sick don’t you son. Well, I’m fixing to do what I can to come fight by your side. One of those little iron man homing beacons we can use to call each other; or even a phone, would… Read more »
I made mistakes. I’m autistic. I had so many childhood traumas, that I had to start making up ways to survive in my head. It got so bad that I actually believed my own lies till my son taught me a way to combine my past memories with my present. All those years of therapy, & he does that in minutes. Wow. It’s sad for me to lose that crutch. But I still see that he is a miracle in so many ways. Oh I came so close to being a good daddy. But s disease finally crushed. I failed him. But my wonderful boy has taught me a way to at least finally start seeing the truth. The truth isn’t the inspiration I hoped to give the world. But it is the truth. I just hope it’s not to late for me to help my son I may be nothing special. But I still matter. I was still created by the One. I am still worthy. Even if I’m just a very flawed man who went thru a lot of trauma. I looked for my son. He helped me find me. Now if I can just help him undo… Read more »
I’m sorry that I made mistakes. I really tried, but I made mistakes. I thought I was doing the right things. But I myself was so flawed. I never meant to harm. In fact; my goal was to be good. I just have a traumatic past, & let that affect me. I couldn’t face who I really am. I keep trying to fix what I broke. I hope I do. It’s so odd. I started believing the things I made up. I made them up as a way to survive and be happy. I made them up at such a young age that they seemed real to me. Deep down I knew they were lies; but they were my best childhood memories. This false memory I made allowed me to survive. I wanted to be good. To love. To help. I did. I helped a lot of people. But then I failed the people I love the most. I’m really trying to fix that. But I don’t know how. If I remove my lies and illusions what am I? Well; my son just showed me the answer. I’m a person. I matter. The One loves me. The perfect child loves… Read more »
So why did I lie. Older men used to tell stories to teach. But that gets boring. So they’d exaggerate and mix in lies. Someone let’s a 2 lb fish get away, but claims it was 25 lbs.
Exaggerating. It makes things more interesting.
So I never saw a problem with lying. It was to show other people how to choose between options. Which stories people tell will you believe. Can they trick you?
You often will work with people. How do you act if they talk about their faith; address; living in s bad area, military career, etc.
You need to be able to work with people; and coexist, without getting fired. Without angering people. Life can be very complicated. So that’s why I lied. I’ve worked; and interacted with, people who said and did all sorts of things. Who believe all sorts of things. You need to co exist with them. It’s not easy. But you have to do it.
But my son needs to realize he is a wonderful amazing person. God loves him.
I guess I should not have joked so much. Tried to protect them so much. Tried to provide absolute proof. To me his living thru that wreck was a miracle, and proof the One loves him and healed him.
But I didn’t want to take any chances; with all the negative people on the earth, so I tried to take what was proof for me, and make it absolute proof for him. That was very wrong of me.
MY SON IS A MIRACLE part 2. A drunk hit us in a freak accident. Front; back seat, & trunk destroyed. Her side damaged. Yet we got out alive. That’s a miracle. No doubt. So you see we all 3 are miracles at that point. If you survive something like that, it’s a miracle. A lot of people don’t see it that way. They want “absolute” proof God exists. To survive my childhood, this is what I did. I fully believe in the “One” and the perfect son. But I tried to give my self absolute proof by lying. This was to survive a very bad situation. When life puts a tiny child in a horrible situation, they have to choose. I chose love and future happiness, but it has caused my son some confusion about things. That’s my fault. All I can do is hope with all my heart that he tries to see things differently, and heals himself of what I’ve caused him to go thru. But here’s how I know he’s a MIRACLE without a doubt. At the hospital his numbers started falling dramatically as he was inside his mom. We formed a prayer circle, and prayed… Read more »
MY SON IS A MIRACLE though. There are two amazing moments with him. The first is we got pregnant. My wife had to have surgeries to do it. It was still proving difficult which often happens with a woman with that health problem. They told her to be patient. I had a good feeling. I was praying for him. I am a very good person. He just doesn’t remember a lot of that because a disease really ravaged me. I have lived almost 30 yrs longer than they thought I would. So I really prayed. I told her be patient. But she so wanted him. She loves him with all her heart. I love him with all my heart. It had been a few days. It was time to test again. We held hands in a prayer circle and prayed. The next day we tested. Pregnant. Then she went to the doctor. Pregnant. To me that was a miracle. I really wanted him. We really prayed. Now one could argue it was just random timing that landed right on the day. After all; we had prayed a couple of times. And the doctors felt if we were patient there’s a… Read more »
But I fully believe in the one and the perfect son. I’m just present now, fully present here. Here is meant to be this way. I’ve pulled myself here. Of course now I must deal with reality without hiding parts of me all over the past, and mostly hiding in the present. I caused my son pain without meaning too. My life was so harsh that I hid from it. To protect him and be a good dad, I went way too far protecting him. I in many ways restricted his growth trying to protect him. His siblings felt they should have more of a voice. I didn’t give them that. I tried to push them to get their best, leaving the kind stuff to my wife. But I should have been much more kind. I was for many years. But I thought I’m the teen years I needed to toughen up to help them. They didn’t know I’d cry at night. I hated being tough. But I thought they needed it. I see now I didn’t mix in enough love. And my second child was right, I should have given her more input. I cry s lot over it.… Read more »
So I have no powers, other than making stuff up and blocking stuff out. I can not draw lighting; teleport; pass thru walls; travel back and forth to Heaven, or any of that. Other than when I nearly died & thought I went to Heaven, but it conveniently looked like what I had imagined earlier, I haven’t traveled there. I can’t step back and forth in time. Stop time. Go to different dimensions. There were no alien grey’s or men in black. None of that. So why did I make up that stuff? Well; someone got my son interested in some of it. I’d let him pick out the real science from the shows. I’d show him real science. I was trying to teach him to sort out fact from fiction. But then he got health problems. I couldn’t talk to him because I almost died, and then the pandemic hit. So I thought he’s trapped in his house like all of us. He’s scared of this germ like all of us. What will he do? Play on his phone & computer. I don’t know about you, but it’s been so weird stuck in a room playing on your phone… Read more »
Now I used to try to help my son. He has autism too. It’s hard to deal with. But we tried to show him love. You tend not to remember the good stuff. Only the bad stuff. Kids would mess with him. Tell him stuff. Super Hero’s were scary. I’d have to watch each movie with him. Play it with the directors talking. Walk him thru it. It was a constant thing. Oh this happens with some none autistics too. So I had a choice. Keep letting other people tell him lies that worried him. They’d get other kids to lie with them I think. Then me search for whatever movie they were talking about, and try to resolve it. Or; try to be a good dad. Who knows if I did it right. I just did my best. So I started showing him simple movies. Working my way up. It worked. Now the kids at school couldn’t hurt him. Oh. They messed with other kids too. But he has autism and he’s my son. He was very young then. Older kids messing with him. So it’s normal for some young kids to have trouble grasping things. Autistics just have… Read more »
