‘Lightworker’ is a term often used in the spiritual community.
If you feel as though you’re called to have a deeper purpose in this world, you might be able to relate to this special role.
In this article, we’ll explore the main signs of being a lightworker.
What is a Lightworker?
A lightworker is a term that refers to a person who has undergone a spiritual awakening and feels called to illuminate the dark places of life.
Lightworkers are often empaths, old souls, and highly sensitive people, with a strong connection to their soul’s voice.
A Lightworker Illuminates the Darkness
While ‘lightworker’ sounds like an exclusively new age term that focuses only on love and light and the ‘feel good,’ it’s not. Or at least, it doesn’t have to be.
The light and darkness are intrinsically connected – one cannot exist without the other.
It’s for this reason that authentic lightworkers often focus a lot on the darkness or the shadow side of humanity.
Many lightworkers focus on:
- healing trauma,
- undoing toxic core beliefs,
- healing the inner child, and
- shining a light on the buried shadow self
After all, what use is the light if it cannot illuminate the darkness?

Hi Aletheia, I’m grateful for your post. I used to regard myself as a lightworker and had many experiences that were/are beyond 3D consciousness and consistent with New Age thinking. However, I strongly resonate with the necessity to do shadow work and embrace the complexity of myself within the ecology of total consciousness. Seeing the divinity in the light and the dark. Initially, I was drifting away from this term because it felt limiting to me. Recent experiences of observing spiritual forums has confirmed my disconnection to the ‘new age’ movement that appears to me to be supporting a particular political agenda. Now, letting go of he need to identify as a lightworker or a ‘way shower’ has opened new paths within me consciousness for exploration. I have not really expressed my experience in a public forum before as I have felt alone in thinking this way. Hence, my gratitude for your post and your clarity in expressing this idea which I share. May the blessings be..
Hi Aletheia,
Thank you for sharing your perspective on the label “Lightworker”. After reading your article, I understand why using this label for yourself doesn’t resonate with you. I also agree with you that, if we label ourselves as a Lightworker, Earth Angel, Starseed, etc. because we want to feel special, that can lead to spiritual egotism / materialism. That’s why I believe it’s so important to understand why we use these labels for ourselves (our intention).
I personally resonate with the Lightworker label for myself, because it has helped me clarify my gifts (and the specific role I play as humanity / the collective awakens and ascends). It doesn’t mean I’m better than anyone else or more special than anyone else– I know the parts of myself that are my shadow, which I have, like every other person does!
Truthfully, I used to identify as a lightworker. But that was many years ago. I used to identify as a Indigo child and as a lot of things… Till it hit me, these are emotional/ psychological archetypes. I love the idea of psychology, archetypes, shadow work. The feeling of separation from the rest of the world while identifying as a lightworker/ indigo was drowning my soul with sadness. But once I started to work with concepts and archetypes instead of literal identities, it has become easier to relate to others as a person like everyone else who has these multiple archetypes within and simply some are dominant. That’s all to it. I’m also the sinner, not just the saint. I’m angry too, not just love. Hence I’m not a lightworker. It’s just a concept, which is okay to embrace sometimes. When I help someone I’m the lightworker, but when I snap in anger I’m the angry wolf. And it’s a place to honor as well because there is a lot to learn from it. Hope all of this makes sense.
I think that we should address our spiritual tutors as light workers and star seeds, we only have labels to define the upper and lower classes of the humanrace therefore our minds are fixed on the unreal to be seen as real.Only those that have fully accepted there soul contract and follow the journey of immortality should be the ones to address them selves of the light worker.Love and Light
I don’t identify with these terms but do have since childhood a strong desire to help and heal as I have suffered the most insurmountable amount of traumas and never want anyone to suffer I think as a result. When my father died at just 13 I started following the teachings of Buddha and understanding the dualities in nature and do as a healer feel it is my obligation to share others shadow work they may want to do? I don’t know if this is typical standard of care but I feel strongly that we have to go thru the dark woods of our soul to really experience healing. But I am feeling now very much in an existential crisis again as I feel like the masters who I receive guidance, my fellow practitioners and just general people I interact with reject anything “negative” and I am not attracting much clientele so maybe my purpose is to just find a cave in the Himalayas and sit in silent meditation because I’ve only been rejected by society. Sorry- in a very dark night here. But thank you for this article I did not need validation as I have no ego but… Read more »
being a lightworker is not at all about denying shadows or darkness, the higher you rise the more dark and light appear the same. it is about picking a polarity, one that allows you to make clean and impactful choices. because you know which side you serve.
Seems that everyone is coming from a point of injury here. For awhile I have always seen source as the Monad. And a dichotomous existence is limiting. But it is more complicated than mere polarity. Numbers are the name of the game. I noticed that someone here self-identifies as a “dark worker.” I’ve met light workers who should be called dark workers for the sake of honesty. But by embracing polarity you commit the logical fallacy of “bifurcation.” (Readers can look that up.) Ultimately, this duality, albeit necessary leads one to the ultimate test of the theory: being. If you exist then the possibility of your not existing must be accepted. Not-being. Which, is a moot point. There is the dyad (duality) of course but also the tryad (triad), which re-links the duality with the monad. 2+1 = 3. And there’s then the ternary, quinary, etc. All are offshoots or encompassed by the monad. The ONE. THE SOURCE OF ALL. There is no escaping it so existence and non-existence is an illusion because it never tips its hat to its father—the one (and mother). On another note. There are powers of great negativity, so if one wants to fall down… Read more »
Yes! This is what I was looking for! You spoke in this article exactly what I have been feeling. I do shadow work. When I do, I end up feeling more whole because I am encompassing the All of myself. I’m good, I fall, I get back up. I try again as part of this experience.
I recently came to this conclusion, and made a conscious decision to not label what I do. Began to notice the obsession with being a “lightworker” within the spiritual circle I was in, and I didn’t like what that obsession did to us. Not only did I made a decision to not label myself, I also made a decision to not surround myself with people who claimed to be spiritual and a “lightworker” but behind closed doors, were doing things that wasn’t for the highest good. But they taught me many things about myself because I was like that. What I didn’t understand was that during that season, I was actually trying to find an identity that wasn’t put onto me by society. Especially being a victim of sexual abuse, I began to understand and realise that the majority of the people I came across, was also a victim of some sort of abuse and was searching for an identity that would take the pain away, instead actually acknowledging the pain, embrace it and then release is a long process. A lot people who I’ve met that called themselves a “lightworker”, are highly spiritual skilled but one thing that they… Read more »
