Sooner or later on the spiritual awakening journey, we all taste the mysterious and intense phenomenon known as kundalini energy.

It might be smooth and subtle, or intense and explosive, but whatever the case, kundalini is a primal force of awakening.

In fact, sometimes people can experience full-blown kundalini awakenings spontaneously without any prior experience (or interest) in spiritual growth or transformation.

Put simply, a kundalini awakening is a form of energetic awakening that causes us to transform on the mental, emotional, and spiritual levels.

Kundalini itself is a Sanskrit word that means “she who is coiled.” It refers to primordial life force energy contained at the base of the spine that is often depicted as a snake.

This serpentine energy, once awoken, travels up the various energy centers (or chakras) of the body and into your crown chakra where higher consciousness is triggered.

The result of this higher awareness is a greater understanding of your Soul (or True Nature), life purpose, and the nature of reality itself.

19 Symptoms of the Kundalini Awakening

As divine feminine energy, kundalini usually lies dormant in the root chakra (base of the spine).

However, there are a number of different situations where kundalini can be suddenly awoken spanning from trauma to drug use, all the way to years of targeted practice (such as tantra or kundalini yoga).

Below, I’ve divided kundalini awakening symptoms into two groups: “light” and “dark” signs.

Please note that kundalini energy is neither good nor bad, instead, it’s a primordial force that simply lives within us. However, to the human mind, some of these experiences are pleasant, and others are extremely unpleasant:

‘Light’ Kundalini Awakening Symptoms

  1. You feel a spiritual connection with the Divine that transcends the ego
  2. You are bathed in bliss and boundless love
  3. You experience periods of Oneness where your compassion for humanity increases
  4. You tap into extrasensory abilities (ESP) and/or develop extraordinary gifts
  5. Pleasurable sensations pulsate through your body
  6. You’re inspired to make big, life-altering decisions and authentic changes in your life
  7. Synchronicity (i.e., meaningful or miraculous coincidences) increases tremendously
  8. You have profound insights into your behavior and past experiences
  9. Your empathic abilities strengthen, and you can feel everything at a profound level
  10. You begin to understand the nature of the mind and how it influences reality
  11. You keep receiving big, cosmic “downloads” of information (soul communication)

‘Dark’ Kundalini Awakening Symptoms

  1. You experience intense, involuntary shaking of the body that can be alarming
  2. Your nervous system becomes hypersensitive to external stressors (bright lights, TV violence, loud noises) and shuts down or craves total solitude
  3. You struggle to sleep properly
  4. You experience sudden and shocking moments of ego death
  5. You have visual disturbances that can feel alarming (e.g., objects seeming to vibrate)
  6. You experience intense heat, vibrations, or electricity surge through your body
  7. It feels like you’re having a bad drug trip while sober
  8. You struggle to distinguish what is real from imagined (psychosis) and feel like you’re going crazy

If you would like to learn more about each of these symptoms and the stages they correspond to, you can read my article on Kundalini Awakening Stages.

Other Kundalini Awakening Symptoms

The above kundalini awakening signs are fairly common. However, as someone who has experienced the energy of kundalini move through me, I can say that it doesn’t happen in the exact same way for everyone.

One of the most recent experiences I’ve had with kundalini, for instance, was preceded by two weeks of low-scale feelings of ‘impending doom,’ followed by the kundalini energy gently moving from my head and down through my body into my stomach.

The energy felt gentle, like a soft breath of wind, and when it reached my stomach, it felt like it was ‘working’ on something there. Then it melted away and vanished.

Here are some other, and perhaps less common, kundalini awakening symptoms:

  • Feeling shattered (fragmented) or like you have no center
  • Dreaming of snakes or seeing snakes everywhere (this is an alert from your subconscious mind)
  • Feeling raw and extremely vulnerable, like a newborn child
  • Manic and exuberant energy or the opposite, chronic fatigue (sometimes alternating)
  • Frequent lucid dreams or vivid dreams
  • Seeing lights or hearing music that isn’t there
  • Tapping into your past life experiences (or other people’s)
  • Entering spontaneous yoga poses (known as kriyas), mudras (hand poses), or pranayama (yogic breathing)
  • Developing a Savior Complex or feelings of grandiosity
  • Feeling intense grief for the planet and all suffering beings
  • Out-of-body experiences where you (may/may not) connect with your Higher Self
  • Visual and hearing changes
  • Panic attacks and feelings of terror
  • Strange food cravings or aversions
  • Spontaneous orgasms
  • Developing strange, undiagnosable physical symptoms that may manifest as autoimmune conditions, digestive issues, nausea, etc.

Have you experienced any of the signs mentioned above? Feel free to share your experience in the comments. This might help others who have undergone similar experiences to not feel alone.

Is Kundalini Awakening Dangerous?

Image of lightning bolt that represents the kundalini awakening

This is a fair question, especially considering some of the symptoms mentioned above.

Would you like to save this?

We'll email this article to you, so you can come back to it later!

Your information will never be shared.

To answer the question, yes and no. Kundalini energy isn’t innately dangerous or bad. It’s our energy blockages that limit the flow of kundalini that make it a painful, scary, and sometimes dangerous experience.

In Georg Feuerstein’s book Tantra: Path of Ecstasy, he explores why kundalini can go haywire:

Without prior cleansing of the nādī system, raising the serpent power (kundalinī-shakti) along the axial pathway is not only impossible but also very dangerous to attempt, for instead of entering the central channel (sushumnā-nādī) it is likely to force itself into the idā- or the pingalā-nādī, on either side of the central channel, causing immense havoc in the body and mind.

In other words, when kundalini is prematurely stimulated or aroused in an incorrect way (aka., through inadequate preparation and clearing of our energetic body), the results can be disastrous. Thankfully, the experience doesn’t last forever, and we’ll explore what to do if you’re experiencing the ‘dark side’ of kundalini awakening a little later.

But to further illustrate, Feuerstein goes on to quote the experience of yogi and mystic Gopi Krishna during his spontaneous kundalini experience. He writes:

There were dreadful disturbances in all the organs, each so alarming and painful that I wonder how I managed to retain my self-possession under the onslaught. The whole delicate organism was burning, withering away completely under the fiery blast racing through its interior. I knew I was dying and that my heart could not stand the tremendous strain for long. My throat was scorched and every part of my body flaming and burning, but I could do nothing to alleviate the dreadful suffering. If a well or river had been near I would have jumped into its cold depths, preferring death to what I was undergoing. . . . I racked my distracted brain for a way of escape, only to meet blank despair on every side. The effort exhausted me and I felt myself sinking, dully conscious of the scalding sea of pain in which I was drowning.

I’ll stop there because I know that this might be alarming to you (or alternatively, affirming, helping you to see that you’re not alone if you’ve experienced this).

In short, kundalini is a mighty potent force.

If you’re seeking to awaken it, be sure you know what you’re doing and seek out trustworthy guidance. This is not something to be trifled with.

Spiritual Awakening vs. Kundalini Awakening – What’s the Difference?

Image of a woman meditating

While the two sound the same, they’re slightly different in nature.

The spiritual awakening process (or what we refer to as the spiritual wanderer’s journey) tends to be emotional and psychological. Kundalini awakening, on the other hand, is energetic: it’s a surge of energy that may be either gentle and gradual, or sudden and intense.

While kundalini awakening usually comes further down the road after someone has experienced a spiritual awakening, it doesn’t always.

As mentioned previously, kundalini can arise suddenly in response to psychedelic drug experiences, sexual encounters, or even traumatic situations.

Another distinguishing factor is that kundalini energy is felt very physically whereas the spiritual awakening is usually more mind and heart oriented.

So while intense vibrations and heat may be felt in the body during kundalini awakening, during spiritual awakening there is more of a soulful quality of deep questioning, insight, and transfiguration (some refer to this as spiritual alchemy).

Can someone experience both spiritual awakening and kundalini awakening at the same time? Yes, absolutely.

It’s for this reason that both tend to lead to the experience of the Dark Night of the Soul (or the inevitable after-effect of having felt like one has ‘lost touch’ with the Divine). Ultimately, they are two sides of the same coin.

5 Hidden Traps of Kundalini Awakening

Ai generated image of a person standing in a serpentine ring of fire representing kundalini awakening energy

The kundalini shakti bestows liberation on yogins and bondage on the ignorant.

– Svātmarāma (15th century yogi master)

Kundalini awakening is a life-changing mystical experience that can feel magical, ecstatic, and profound. And it is. But there are also many hidden traps we can fall into after we’ve emerged out of the other end.

Some of these traps involve:

  1. Spiritual superiority – seeing yourself as “more awake” than others and looking down on those who are not as advanced or still “asleep” (also known as spiritual narcissism)
  2. Savior complex – adopting a disproportionate sense of self-grandiosity and specialness, believing that you’re sent to “save the world” (e.g., for those who have undergone kundalini psychosis, this can even mean believing they’re Jesus Christ or the next Buddha)
  3. Grasping and attachment – desperately trying to hold onto the blissful experiences of the kundalini awakening and being miserable (even entering crisis mode) when it’s inevitably lost (this can result in spiritual materialism and the dark night of the soul)
  4. Spiritual nihilism – taking universal truths and misapplying them to a human level, e.g., “all is an illusion,” “nothing ultimately matters” which breeds a sense of dissociation, emptiness, and cynicism
  5. Avoidance – avoiding or spiritually bypassing everyday responsibilities and focusing only on “higher spiritual matters” (this is essentially a way for the ego to avoid growing up and integrating the experience at a human level)

I explore a variety of different spiritual issues that can arise on the spiritual wanderer’s journey which you can check out in the Traps & Pitfalls section of this site.

How to Handle a Kundalini Awakening

Image of a yogini

If your kundalini has awoken and you’re feeling overwhelmed, here’s some guidance:

1. Be gentle with yourself and take care of your nervous system

Likely, your nervous system is going into overdrive if you’re having a painful kundalini experience. Some ways to calm your nerves can include:

  • Taking a warm bath with essential oils like lavender (you can also try magnesium salts). If a warm bath doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, try a cold shower. Be mindful and notice how your body and mind respond to the temperature of the water.
  • Find something/someone that brings you a feeling of safety. This might be cuddling your dog or cat, asking your partner or friend to hold you, finding a cozy nook in nature, or relaxing in a corner of your house that brings you comfort.
  • Listen to calming music.
  • Try slow guided breathing using an app like Calm or InsightTimer. (Be mindful of how your body responds. Stop immediately at the first sign of discomfort.)
  • Ground yourself outdoors in nature.
  • Eat grounding foods (potatoes, root vegetables, organic meat)

2. Stop all spiritual practice temporarily

Yes, your spiritual practice might be amplifying the effects of your kundalini awakening. So stop. Let yourself rest. If you crave a replacement practice, try mindfulness as it helps to ground you in the present moment. Read my article on the spiritual emergency for more helpful ideas.

3. Seek out compassionate help

If you still struggle with the kundalini energy being too intense, I strongly recommend seeking out the guidance of a transpersonal or depth psychotherapist. The best guides are those who understand the importance of integrating the mind and spirit (or spiritual psychology).

There are also people who specialize in kundalini awakening help that you can find online – but tread carefully. Trust your instincts. If you feel worse or if you get weird vibes about someone, you don’t owe them any explanation. Leave. Find someone else. You have the right to get the guidance you need.

Kundalini Awakening FAQ

Image of a mystical woman experiencing kundalini awakening symptoms

Here are some other questions you might have about this powerful experience on the spiritual journey:

What happens after kundalini awakening?

Usually, there is a period of long integration after the kundalini awakening experience. In other words, it takes a while for the mind, heart, and soul of a person to fully comprehend what they’ve been through and translate that into daily life. For some (extremely) rare people, kundalini awakening results in liberation from the separate self and the realization of non-dual awareness (also known as ‘enlightenment’).

How to have a kundalini awakening?

There are many methods out there that help to stimulate kundalini energy. Most involve either Tantric and/or Yogic practice. Visualization, plant medicines (like psilocybin mushrooms and ayahuasca), certain breathwork techniques, belly dancing, and meditations also help to awaken kundalini energy. But remember to always be gentle, go slowly, and know what you’re doing. Kundalini energy is powerful and not to be messed around with.

How long does kundalini awakening take?

The answer is that it varies for everyone. Some people experience the awakening of kundalini early on their spiritual path (indeed, for some it actually triggers the spiritual search). For others, kundalini awakens after many years of spiritual practice. There is no set-in-stone rule here: it depends on your unique energetic blockages, destiny, soul, and many other factors.

***

As the kundalini awakens, you naturally become aware of your true nature, the nature of God, and the purpose of your existence. It is an accelerated path to God-Realization, and can create many extraordinary experiences and realizations.

– Steven Sadleir (Looking For God)

Kundalini awakening can happen gradually and subtly or explosively and rapidly on our spiritual awakening journeys.

Known as the Serpent Power, the Inner Woman, and the essence of Shakti, kundalini energy can be a force of tremendous awakening or deep enslavement. The key is to be mindful, practice spiritual discernment, trust in your soul’s strength, and seek help where needed.

Remember that the ultimate purpose of kundalini is to dissolve the inner knots that keep you small and limited, helping you to awaken to your Eternal, Primordial, True Nature.

I have been going thru a wild spiritual awakening for years, and also several rounds of Kundalini awakenings. However, there have been phases when I experience intense shadow energy in the early AMs and this can be a phase of 1-week to 1-month. I’ve done a tremendous amount of shadow work that I felt spiritually “forced” into. I’m just curious if the shadow energy in the early AM is normal or something that others experience, and how they’ve handled it. I don’t like it and I’m confused by it given the amount of exhausting shadow energy I have already done. Thanks for listening.

Thank you for your article. Recently, as I lay in bed, in my minds I saw this serpentine creature approaching me. Oddly enough it came from the bathroom. as it approached, it started transforming into what looked more like a Chinese dragon and stopped right in front of me. I called light to myself and wrapped it around me. Oddly enough, I had no fear, and I said to myself, “I am unafraid.” The serpentine/dragon creature dissipated and I heard in my mind, “She is ready.” Since then, I have had a past life regression with a Quantum Healer, where I was taken back into 3 past lives where I had profound experiences that left me feeling lighter. In that regression I was asked if my guides had any messages for me and I began to channel a message of love and being, rather than doing. That message has relaxed me greatly, as I kept having a feeling that I needed to be about doing the purpose that I incarnated here for. As it turns out I am not supposed to do anything, rather, I am supposed to just be and allow the Light and Love of the All That Is to flow through me. I have been now practicing being, which is so different as I have always been a doer.
As far as Kundalini symptoms, on the physical level I have periods where I feel extremely hot and a cold shower seems the only way to cool myself down. I also have a feeling of light headedness, and a sense of weakness in the body. I seem to fatigue easily, yet I also have spurts of energy. I don’t know if it counts, but I have trouble sleeping sometimes. This symptom has been with me for a couple of years, so I’m not sure if it is a Kundalini symptom or something else. On an emotional level I find myself being detached. I look at things like the war in Ukraine and the political unrest in the United States, and while I feel genuinely moved by what is going on, I also feel in a strange way unemotional about it, like I know that this is all part of a greater plan that will bring Unity to the world. And those that perish in the Ukraine war are living out their soul contracts, their gift of love to the greater whole of humanity, to bring the world together. And I know that while all of this is going on I am to hold the Light in my being that it anchors into the earth and then spreads throughout the world. I also know I am not the only one, that there are thousands of us and more awakening each day. All of this happening to me in a matter of weeks. Pretty amazing! I am glad I am here now, as I have always felt I never quite belonged, and have had such a longing in recent years to go “home.” I am holding the Light. I am the Light of the world, and so are you. Basically, we all are. We just need to choose to be that Light.

I found this article because I didn’t realize that the symptoms I was having was signs that are darker in nature, but I was wondering if you would or could elaborate more on why autoimmune diseases are associated with the kundalini awakening. As I myself am really trying to start my journey of potentially diagnosing one but the one I’m looking into runs through families and it make me curious if there is generational trauma related to them. My thoughts have also been wandering to if this disease could be the reason why my energy can’t flow at all, as my whole body is affected and inflammation occurs all over the body as well.

Love the website. I’m noticing a trend lately. When I meditate or do mudras, I’m starting to get chills. Sometimes all over my body or just on the chest area. It’s gotten to the point I keep a small heater by me when I meditate. Would you know what that means?

What I know now as my spontaneous Kundalini awakening I always thought it started from the bottom up but I too went through a stressful life changing situation 3 months straight and one intense day at work I went from thinking I was having a stroke to a heart attack to an aortic abdominal aneurysm to later hear from the medic that my hands formed a mudra that always stuck with me was diagnosed with anxiety after that didn’t stay on meds long because I didn’t care for the feeling but after deep research and searching within I know that was an awakening have had many other symptoms that agree but now because I know what it is I’m able to remain calm when it happens it’s actually a euphoric feeling I can actually feel my body vibrating

I had some weird, spiritual/metaphysical, happenings go down recently. I believe I have begun to access my third eye charkras. I physically felt and heard what I can only describe as mayonnaise being squirted out of a packet and felt the sensation of pressure squeezing behind my forehead in my brain and centered between my eyes. And I saw this symbol appear while closed eyes, a large middle eye with an eye shape on either side, red in color tinged with yellow and orange. This happeed with out me thinking about anything thirdeye’ish. I was just breathing and pushing away bad energies with my energies deeper I breathed and the harder I pushed outward and away from my self, I was pushing so hard out into the universe then boom this symbol appeared and with three breaths three times I heard and felt that sound and sensation. . . Let me tell the whole story.

I’ve been feeling like something, shadowish creeping around me. It’s been jetting off into shadows or just kinda fleeting into view peripherally, before skirting away. All over the place I’ve been feeling it recently really intense. Before it was just a sensation like something was there. Recently it’s become more peripherally visual, like an unnatural shadow thing has been messing with me. Different sizes, shapes, places. It’s been kinda alarming like intentional.

Recently it’s been intense even the dogs have been affected a little like they sence it around the corner. I’ve been watching them when I sense or feel it and they give a look like uhh are we alone. And I don’t believe in “ghosts” and all so it’s not a spiritual presence but someone or things energies or Ill intent at least that how I decided to confront it.

So I’m in the shower and I feel tense in my head and I feel a little headache and I don’t get head aches, so I breath into the shower and I make my new hand signal the helps me activate my flows that I just recently discovered Yes I’m like Naruto now with hand signals to activate Chakra flows lol. . Anyway get serious.

I close my eyes and I see two small eye shapes off the the sides and a large one in the middle, never seen actual images. . . But it’s red and orange and I breath into it and I feel this squeezing sensation between my eyes and brows but back in my head , no joke, then I physically hear and feel a sensation of something being like squeezed out of what I can only think of as my penal gland. And it became one with the breathing, then the squeezing sound and sensation. Three-time this went; lasting as long as my exhales, then after it had subsided I opened my eyes.

So I felt this rush of calming energy and I thought I’m good with pushing my energy out so let’s push this thing away. In I breathed deep and out I imagined a force of energy push like a bubble and every breath I imagined it getting bigger until it was universal pushing outwards and the shadow sensation was gone as of right now still. We’ll see. But I got freaked out I heard my daughters say we love you dad. . . They where with their mother, in another town. So I immediately changed to pushing protective energy at them more and more and deeper and deeper and every breath I made it bigger until I was crying and I stopped. . . Calmed my self.

Then thought why not try and put a permanent protection bubble around me so I closed my eyes and I saw red and orange glowing ball and I could feel it was me, I push a field from that ball outwards around me like a foot or so and just left it their and put energy into it. . As I’m getting out of the shower I hear something fall in my room and it’s a small box from my closet . . Has my babies sonogram pics in it. It’s open and splayed out. . .

I called my girls they where ok. Then all of a sudden everyone who I usually talk to or have been intimate with starts contacting me. . . Very trippy, I’ve had this calming clarity ever since, and a little pressure just behind my brow like “hey, I’m here now, I’ve been opened.”

This happened three days after I experienced a kundalini awakening, also in the shower. Trying to Crack my lower back ( lumbar 5 damage). With a pop froma place I’ve never felt before I sensed felt almost saw this rainbow energy explode from y lower back and shoot through me into my head. I felt like opening my eyes and slowly as I did I was encompassed visually by shinning white light. It felt serine and I was unafraid of it so I breathed into its it enveloped me ad my senses. Sounds left the room and it was a beautiful hum. The light left a circle like a tune to look through and I felt I could look at any thing.so I looked into my self to see that rainbow energy and I sawthe most clear picture of my own spine and this rushing beautifu an powerful rainbow brilliant winery rushing through my vertebra like a flow of water. Than it subsided.

I would love to feel and see that again….!

Thanks for sharing valuable information. I’ve been exploring this topic for some time due to various reasons and experiences. Of all them, I was very happy to find a mentioning of persistent snake dreams. I had these for a couple of years (lots and lots of snakes and extreme sense of danger). They have gradually resolved into fewer and more friendly snakes and finally disappeared altogether. I’m glad I found a reference here, because I gave up seeking an explanation.

A bit about me – I’m 27 and would consider myself a fairly average person. Early in my life, I lost my mother at 6. She was told she would never again have children, 15 years later I was born, I was her everything and losing her was devastating. Trauma with step-parents soon followed (important to note as many sudden awakenings seem to be in individuals with early trauma). I was raised “Catholic” but never really went to church nor followed anything other than just trying to be a good, moral person. I’m not religious nor spiritual, heck, I work in Finance and am actually skeptical of all types of mysticism. I never read about Buddhism/Hinduism either, never tried meditating. The old me would rather go to the bar and watch some football with a ground of friends.

About a year ago I was with friends and had my first experience. We were smoking marijuana like we’ve done many times before, but something wasn’t right, I felt off. Eventually I had what is described above as one of these negative introductions into Kundalini. For months I was terrified, I loved smoking, it relaxes me, but now I’m faced with this burden. My early research was telling me it was drug-induced psychosis. I would smoke and all my willpower was to stop this from happening and remain present. Mindfulness became a big part of my life over the past few years to help combat anxiety I’ve faced my entire life – probably since I lost my mother.

I had a few more episodes, but around the 2nd or 3rd time, while most of it was horrifying and feeling like I was locked in an eternity of nothingness, a euphoric feeling started to emerge. I’d love to go into it, but if you’re reading it, you know. After that, I started searching for it. I would feel the energy rising during meditation, but would stop and take notes on how I felt, how to master whatever is happening to me. I didn’t want that to repeat, my biggest thing is staying out of that void, and I feel like I can, I feel like I know which way I’m entering into Kundalini if that makes sense. Finally it happened a couple more times with no pain, straight bliss.

It seems like many different cultures all have different ways of looking at this experience, and based on what this all has taught me combined with my boredom during Covid and studying history/past civilizations, I don’t think there is any one answer. We are all people, we are all human. Once culture/religion doesn’t have the answer, how can they all be right? It seems like they’re all touching on the same thing just in their own way, combined with their own languages (which changes things drastically) cultures and histories.

I don’t know if what we’ve all stumbled upon is literally the meaning to life, but it’s certainly more real than stock markets/countries/religions/all other constructs we’ve created in our lives.

Everything written about Kundalini seems to tie into exactly what I felt, thought, experienced/still am experiencing. I’m currently reading a ton about it and while I’m happy I stumbled upon the explanation (according to the internet, Kundalini seems to be EXACTLY what I felt) I am still skeptical.

I guess where I’ll end this monologue – if you’re at all like the person I described in the first paragraph, and you read this type of stuff and immediately write it off, try looking at all this from a different perspective.
